Ubuntu Networking :: SMB Mount Size 78 MB?
Jan 7, 2010
I have mounted a SMB hardvare drive that works flawless if i go by the adress:
smb://freenas/share
But if i mount it to /media/share the size is 78 MB. The real size is 1TB. Still, if i go to smb://freenas/share, the size is real. This is my fstab line that mounts it:

I have a 1TB external hard drive. I would like to create in it 10 folders:
Code:
I would then like to permanently mount each folder to its machine (I have 10 machines connected through a switch, so each machine will have a folder that is mounted to ONE of the 10 folders in the external hard drive).
My questions:
(1) Is this a good configuration? are there better ideas to give individual machines more space without replacing their hard drive?
(2) How do I limit each one of the folders ('folder1', 'folder2', ...., 'folder10') to a size of 100 [GB]? I don't want one folder (say, 'folder1') to grow in size and 'steal' the space designated to the other folders.

I am doing some benchmarking on EXT4 performance on Compact Flash media. I have created an ext4 fs with block size of 65536. however I cannot mount it on ubuntu-10.10-netbook-i386. (it is already mounting ext4 fs with 4096 bytes of block sizes) According to my readings on ext4 it should allow such big block sized fs. I want to hear your comments.

I have reformatted my hard drive with allocation size 64K(formatted on windows with 64k setting) for a better performance on my WDTV HD media player(dealing with large files).When I mount this drive on Linux, the properties tells me that"blksize=4096".If I keep writing files using this default setting(blksize=4096) to my NTFS formatted hard drive, will my WDTV be able to benefit from the performance improvement of 64k allocation size ?I am confused, Does it have anything to do with "blksize=4096". ?Should I try and mount my hard drive with a larger blksize ?I did some research on google but couldn't find an option to increase the blksize when mounting an NTFS pre-formatted drive

I have one hard disk (call her HDA) that contains nothing but a single ext4 partition containing a backup of all my important data. Last night I did a clean install of Ubuntu 10.10 on my primary hard disk (call her HDB) and from there proceeded to upgrade directly to Ubuntu 11.04 upgrade. In 10.10, I was able to read HDA just fine. However after the upgrade, I can no longer mount this drive. When mounting from file browser:
Code:
Error mounting: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda,missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so The end of dmesg said the following:
Code:
dmesg | tail
[ 82.130904] EXT4-fs (sda): bad geometry: block count 122096646 exceeds size of device (122096381 blocks)
my hard disk has a block count greater than the size of my device. I've done my background searching on this and tried a command line utility I've never heard of before:
Code:
# sudo e2fsck /dev/sda
e2fsck 1.41.14 (22-Dec-2010)
The filesystem size (according to the superblock) is 122096646 blocks
The physical size of the device is 122096381 blocks
[code]....
this is as far as I've gotten. This drive holds over a decade's worth of work for me and is extremely valuable. I really didn't think that the Ubuntu upgrade process would mess with this drive, seeing as the Ubuntu install was contained on an entirely different drive. What is it that I need to do to restore my drive to working status?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 running Ubuntu v10.04 with a wireless card.My desktop is a Dell Optiflex running WinXP.The desktop is connected via ethernet cable to a Linksys wireless router. Certain folders on the desktop are set for sharing. Up until early last week I was able to access the desktop folders from the laptop with no issues.Suddenly I am now getting this error "Unable to mount location Failed to mount Windows share" whenever I try to access the desktop folders from the laptop.I suspect an upgrade is the culprit, but not sure.

I have been trying to share folders from my main PC which is running Ubuntu 10.04. I have been able to figure out Samba enough to get my a couple of folders shared, but I have been unable to share any folders which are on my external harddrive. After entering the path in my smb.conf file they appear on the network but I am unable to navigate to them. When trying to navigate to them through the network folder on the pc they are actually connected to I get an "Unable to mount location: Failed to mount windows share" dialog box. On the windows pc I am trying to share with I get, "Windows cannot acces \Josh-Desktop
ame of folder"
My smb.conf file looks like this:
That folders I cannot access are Music and Videos.

I have recently set up an ubuntu installation on an old PC. After some fiddling with both it, and the windows 7 machine, I have managed to share all of my drives. However, when attempting to access them from ubuntu, only 2 of the 4 hard disk shares will mount, with the other 2 failing with a Unable to mount location, failed to mount windows share error message.

a client brought in an 160GB external HDD and wanted to get the files off it, there appeared to be no partitions on the disk but i thought it may have been formatted to use the whole disk. I tried to mount it as the various FS types the client thought it may have been to no avail.
I ran testdisk on it which told me that it previously had a mac partition table and a 210GB partition on it (which is larger than the disk) could anyone enlighten me as to whether or not this is even possible, and if so how could i retrieve the data?

Ubuntu 10.04, xsane 0.996, Brother MFC 240c scanner.I just finished writing a long dissertation on my problem with this scanning environment (which I will spare you). In a nutshell the resulting image, when printed, is smaller than the original document. In writing my dissertation for this post I determined that the cause of the issue is that xsane believes I am scanning an 8.5 x 14 inch document when I am in fact scanning an 8.5 x 11 letter. So the question is... can I change the size to 8.5 x 11? and if so, how? I have not found anything in the xsane Preferences.

today I upgraded via official testing repository Gnome to version 3.18. After this, icons on desktop and nautilus are bigger, than before. Next thing, gaps between icons are smaller than before. I tried change theme to default (Adwaita), then run gtk-update-icon-cache, but without result.
Normal view - icons are big for this view. URL....
Small view - icons are still big for this view. URL...
How can I change icons size and gaps size? Or is it bug for this version?

I have installed ubuntu 10.10 and the Samba addon to configure my shares to my Windows terminals.This is what I got
Firewall off (utf disabled)
Internal Sata /dev/sda1 (EXT4 FS)
External USB HDD /dev/sdb1 mounted at /media/SG1500GB (EXT4 FS)
I have two shares
1. //home/test - Which I can see and access with no problems (can't write to it though even though I set the share as writable?, but, I can read from it). This is available to everyone. My windows terminal can see this folder and access it. This is on my main 80GB internal drive /dev/sda1.
2. //media/SG1500GB/Music. I set this up for everyone full access and I can see it at all my Windows machines but,I can't get into the folder. Windows keeps giving me an error stating network path not found.I also try to access it via the Nautilus (Places/Network/system/music) and get an error message "unable to mount location, Failed to mount windows share". This drive is mounted per the disk utility.

For learning purposes i've set up a vpn between a laptop (running ubuntu) and a pc (running windows). The 2 computers are on the same lan. The VPN server is set on the laptop, and as a guide i used this tutorial:The problem is that the mtu on the ppp0 interface is 1396 and the mtu on the eth0 interface is 1492 so in order to pass packets from the et0 if to the ppp0 if, the laptop needs to fragment the packets, and here is where the problem appears: the packets come with the don't fragment bit set. I've tried lowering the mtu of the eth0 if but that didn't work. The only way i managed to make this work is setting the ppp0 mtu size to 1492. The thing is that setting the mtu and mru in the pptpd-options file to 1492 doesn't do anything (at least to solve this problem) and the only way to set the mtu of the ppp0 if is to manually set it using: Code:sudo ifconfig ppp0 mtu 1492 The issue with this is that every time the connection resets i have to enter the command.

Whenerver I try to log on to our Windows 2008 R2 server via rdesktop, the window stays at the same small size. I can neither enlarge the window at the borders nor maximize it. Alt+Ctrl+Enter simply gives me the same window-content on the full screen with the rest simply grey.
Is that normal behaviour for rdesktop? Is there an alternative?

In trace file of tpcdump I am seeing Zero window size. I have receive buffer set like this:
net.ipv4.tcp_rmem = 4096 87380 16777216
net.ipv4.tcp_wmem = 4096 65536 16777216
But when I look at the advertized window size it's only 1K? Why is it not set to more than that? I should see it 16M somewhere it doesn't start with it neither does it scale that much. tcp_window_scaling is also set to 1

I have created a MLPPP connection using pppd(s).My PPP config file is as follow code...
Now after connecting a TCP socket from peer entity, I am getting certain Window Overflow errors which means that request is greater than receiver's advertise windows size.The peer is not in Linux. On running wireshark I have found these windows size
PPPd= 1040 ;Peer=1000
For ethernet the connection made successfully.
Ethernet=6500 ; Peer=1000
Is there anyway, to increase windows size in case of PPP connections?

I wrote an application that receives packets on one interface and sends them to another interface after it added a vlan header. Both the sending and the receiving is done using raw sockets. Everything seems to work fine until I get TCP packets that are of size 1514 (MTU). Once I add a vlan header to the packet, its size becomes 1518 and when I try to send it I get the returned value -1 and errno=90 (message too long). I tried to change the MTU of the NIC to a value that is bigger than 1500 but that fails. If I create a bridge using brctl and vconfig between the NICs I can see that my NIC does sends packets of size 1518. What do I need to in order to make my NIC to send packets of size 1518?
