Ubuntu Networking :: Ssh/sftp Connection Refused?

Jun 13, 2010

I'm trying to establish a connection between two laptops using sftp but am getting the following error message:

Connecting to <IP>...
ssh: connect to host <IP> port 22: Connection refused
Couldn't read packet: Connection reset by peer

ftp isn't working either. Both machines are running Ubuntu and connect to the internet through the same wifi router in case that's relevant. What could be the problem?

Networking :: Connection Destroy Time With Net Filter Connection Tracking?

May 13, 2011

When I have video running and the video stops, I see that the connection is destroyed in about 5 seconds, which is what I want. If, rather than stopping the video, I pull the plug, I have seen it take 350 and 380 seconds before the connection is destroyed. Why is there such a large difference in the time to destroy a video connection between stopping the video and pulling the plug on it when using net filter connection tracking? How can I shorten the time for the connection to get destroyed when pulling the plug?

Ubuntu Security :: Securing SSH Connection For SFTP Server

Jan 19, 2011

I'm running an SFPT server which my clients logon to using an FTP client. at the moment each client has a user name and password.

Thus far to improve security I've disabled root login but an looking for futrhrt ways to protect it from attack, having researched using google some of the security features suggested prevent the FPT clients from connecting.

Questions:
1- what further things can i do to secure my server that still allows it to be usable for FTP clients?
2- specifically is it possible to use non login pre-share key authentication?

How i set up the server is shown here: [url]

Ubuntu Networking :: Autodial Pppoe Connection At Scheduled Time?

Jun 14, 2010

I've been trying to use gnome-schedule to create a scheduled task that would dial my pppoe connection automatically. For this I used "sudo pon" command (after configuring the pppoe connection using pppoeconf ). Although the command gets executed, but then it waits for me to enter the password. I want it to be automatic & shouldn't require me/anyone to authorize it. Is there a way to enter this password automatically for the scheduled tasks?

Also, I'd like to use network manager, instead of pppoeconf, for the same purpose. How can I set network manager to dial a pppoe connection at scheduled time?

CentOS 5 :: Limit To One Connection Per User For Ssh / Sftp?

Dec 3, 2009

Is it possible to limit each user so that only one can connect via each username for ssh/sftp? I work with a small company where there aren't really enough of us to justify using a revision control system, but we don't want to accidentally step on each other's toes, so we'd like to try simply preventing more than one person from accessing a given domain at once.

Apr 23, 2010

I could not find an answer to this. I can connect to the internet no problem after I edit the connection name to NETGEAR instead of our last name. After a while it looks like it renews the connection and created a new one with the wrong name. The connection drops. It looks to me it is not using the same wireless connection each time but creating new ones that do not work for the above mentioned reason. What can I do to stop the loop and have it use the same connection always?

Fedora Servers :: SFTP Connection Refused Error: Could Not Connect To Server

Dec 20, 2009

I have FileZilla installed on this machine, and OpenSSH (with an open port 22) on another machine on my home network. When I try and connect, I get: Quote: Status:Connecting to 192.168.2.3... Response:fzSftp started Command: open "alphatwo@192.168.2.3" 22 Error:Connection refused Error:Could not connect to server

Which has left me puzzled as I have an open port. Does the username have to be defined somewhere? E.g. the machine acting as my SFTP server can be logged on to locally as alphatwo so that's what I logged in as (with the correct password). Is this correct? If so, does anyone have any ideas as to how I might rectify it? I want SFTP set up so I can copy PHP files from my laptop to /var/www/html/ on another PC (across the home network).

Networking :: SFTP Using PPK Key File?

Mar 26, 2010

I have been provided with a PPK file to connect to a remote server using SFTP. I've also been given a username and password. I created a user test and created a .ssh directory in their home directory. I've put the ppk file in here and renamed it id_rsa (though I'm pretty sure I'm not correct in doing so)
When I SFTP using sftp test@remoteserver.com I get prompted for the key password - which I don't know and am presuming is blank, so I just hit enter Then is prompts me for the user password which I give it. it falls down here. I used the -v option to see where it stops - which tells me: debug1: Trying private key: /home/test/id_rsa debug1: PEM_read_PrivateKey failed I presume this is because SFTP is expecting a .PEM key instead of a PPK?

Ubuntu Networking :: SFTP Multiple Simultaneous Connections

Feb 7, 2010

I really hope someone could help me with this problem. I've been stuck on this for a month.I am using the sftp command to upload files using a bash script. The problem is that it is extremely slow to do it this way. as many of you would know if you have shared server somewhere. I would use scp if remote server supported it, but it doesn't.

Anyway, If any of you have ever used FileZilla, in the Settings, if you go to "Transfers" there is a place where you can set the number of "maximum simultaneous transfers". This feature works wonders with SFTP (and FTP too). It really speeds things up. How do I accomplish this same thing with the sftp command... because I don't want to use a GUI. I don't even mind using FileZilla through the command line if possible... but it does not seem to be possible. I've been stuck on this for a month!!! I've searched everywhere and tried a lot of things with no avail...

General :: Connect To An SFTP Server From A Windows Machine To A SFTP Server Using A DSA Key?

Jul 24, 2011

As a Windows user, I generated a pair of DSA keys from CoreFTP Lite and sent it to a third party that runs an SFTP server. They told me that a valid DSA key needs to have ssh-dsa at the start and the username@systemname at the end. CoreFTP generated neither the ssh-dsa header nor the username@systemname footer. I tried with WinSCP and it didn't generate them either. Is there a difference between how SFTP works between Windows and Linux? If I put a useraccount@systemname at the end of the text will it work? How would the Linux system validate that my system is called "systemname"? If it can't validate, what is the purpose of adding it?
