Ubuntu Networking :: Realtek RTL-8185 With Ubuntu 10.04 64bit?
Jun 21, 2010
I've been busy all day searching forums to get my RTL-8185 to work -consistently- on Ubuntu with no luck. Now most threads were quite old and were about older 32 bit versions of Ubuntu, so i'm wondering if someone found a way to get this card working properly with a fully up to date version of 10.04 64bit ? (uname & lspci output below)
The best (/least bad) result so far was to unload the rtl8180, clear the auto wlan0 setup in 'Network Connections' and reload rtl8180. I tried the ndiswrapper way with the 32 & 64 bit XP drivers but it complained in -both cases- that the 32b driver wouldn't work with a 64b kernel and wlan0 didn't show up in iwconfig.

I am brand new to ubuntu (I installed it about 2 hours ago on my new PC). Everything so far has seemed really easy and straight-forward, but I am having problems trying to connect to my wireless network.
I have a Realtek 8185 wireless card, and have the disk with the inf file on it. I installed ndisgtk but when I pointed it to the inf file, I got an "error while installing" message, then it showed up in the list of currently installed drivers in ndisgtk but as an invalid driver. I'm not really sure what I'm doing wrong.
I actually have another wireless card in my old PC (a belkin of some sort) - would I be better off using that? I'm using an ethernet cable at the moment and it works absolutely fine, I just plugged it in and off I went.

Im not able to establish a Wireless Internet connection in Ubuntu 10.04.
Ive tried these steps:
1. Wireless Internet did not show via the Network-icon. Only the 2 LAN-gates where shown
2. I installed the Windows Driver (net8185.inf) via ndisgtk package
3. After restarting the computer, 2 LAN-gates and 1 WLAN where listed via the Network-icon
4. Normally WLAN should automatically start scanning for available networks, but that didnt happen
5. When I tried to connect to my own network, the computer tries to connect for 1 minute and than stops because no connection could be established
6. A wired Internet-connection does not give any problems
Details:
- I first had Ubuntu 9.10 but I wasnt able to make a WLAN connection either. I followed the same steps. After that I upgraded to 10.04
- iwconfig in Terminal gives an IP-address which consists of 12 identical characters.
- lspci in Terminal shows these data:
01:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetLink BCM5787M Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express (rev 02)
[Code]....
My questions:
- How to create an Internet connection via my WLAN-card?
- How to install the option to search for available networks automatically?

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 32 bits and a Realtek 8185 wireless card. The card worked perfectly fine with WPA for a long time in Windows 7, but on Ubuntu I'm having problems. Using it without installing anything else makes it work for a very short time. It disconnects after a while and I have no other choice but to restart the computer.
Using windows drivers and ndiswrapper doesn't work at all (in fact it makes things worse because it stops recognizing my card at all). Using the linux drivers from Realtek's website is what works the best so far. I had to compile them and install them. But it still disconnects after a few hours if I'm using WEP (and only after a few minutes if I'm using WPA). I looked at other people with 8185 problems in this forum but their solutions didn't work for me.

Just installed ubuntu on my computer, but when I try to connect to my wireless I type in my password and it doesn't connect.
It says its WPA/WPA2 and won't let me change that (I am not sure what mine actually is)
Im using a virgin media 'superhub' to connect but have changed the default wireless password.

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 (natty-64 bit) and my wireless PCI card is not being recognised by default. Previously, when I upgraded to 10.10 I had to go to the Realtek website, download the driver for RTL8185 and install it (following instructions in the readme file) to get my wireless card recognised and working properly. This time around, that approach doesn't seem to work. When I try to install it using "make" I get the following error:
make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.38-8-generic-pae/build: No such file or directory. Stop.
make: *** [all] Error 2

The card is recognized by Ubuntu 9.10 and I have it in the network manager. I followed one tutorial about creating an ad-hoc network and all looked good, until I actually wanted to connect (or to be more precise, my machine is a host for other computers). The wireless icon just loops endlessly, without connecting and eventually I get "Wireless network - disconnected" message.
So, the main issue here is - connecting! I just can't. Also if you know/have some good tutorial for ad-hoc,
Code:
ivan@ivan-desktop:~$ iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:"internat3"

For reasons of "soon to arrive baby taking over my office" I have had to install a wifi PCI card in my PC. It's a TrendNet TEW423PI and the chip is a Realtek rtl-8185. the card will not connect and if I hover on the network manager widget, it says "wireless disabled by hardware". I have run a few commands to try to understand what is going on but I can't see anything wrong.
Code:

[sudo] password for macdo:

I have a white label netbook with the Realtek RT8187SE Wireless card on PCIe. It is not detecting wireless networks consistently. When I am even 1 meter from the wireless router, I get no networks in range, but sometimes I pick up networks that are more than 20 meters from me. I can not connect, even if it is unsecure.
WiFi Radar does not detect the card. If I run a system check on the PCI bus I get the following: 02:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8187SE Wireless LAN Controller (rev 22) Subsystem: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8187SE Wireless LAN Controller Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 17

I've had this problem ever since I've installed this ethernet card in the PC (after the 'effin integrated one blew off for some reason), I wasn't ever able to make the networking work again. Every time I try to trigger the PPPoE connection (DSL), the PPP configurator keeps on looking for the concentrator, reaches over 100% and stayed like that for 1 hour. Here's the terminal log of everything that I've tried:
Code:
~$ sudo lshw -C network

product: RTL8139D [Realtek] PCI 10/100BaseTX ethernet adaptor

I have an ASUS M4A785-m and it has the Realtek 8112L gigabit nic. The weird thing is, the 10.10 rc saw the nic card just fine, and windows sees the card so it's not disabled in the bios.
Ubuntu says i have no network connections and i need to get internet. Any suggestions?
I should also note that i'm running from the livecd and lspci shows that it detects my NIC. but my NIC isn't "detected" in that it can be used.

I have tried ndiswrapper using 32 bit and 64 bit winxp drivers and the 32 bit driver just doesn't work period (as expected.) The 64 bit driver locked the system up completely and I ended up reinstalling ubunto. I have now reinstalled and updated and upgraded ubunto 10 times in the last 3 days of trying to get this to work and need some external!
using
Code:
lshw -C network
I do see my network card and driver.
Where I am at currently: I have a fresh install of ubunto 10.04 with it upgraded and updated. I do not have ndiswrapper gtk installed and I have not downloaded any drivers for the wireless card.

trying to get my little Encore USB wireless adapter to work on several flavors of Linux (Ubuntu 10,10, ElementOS, Xubuntu, and Puppy), I emailed tech support at Realtek. I asked where is the Linux driver for this product? I did this because there were no Linux drivers posted on their site and everyone here (and on Newegg) is jumping though hoops trying to get a working wireless connection with the Encore and similar dongles that use the RT8187b chipset. I didn't expect an answer, but felt better after my little vent. I get an email from Realtek with a driver. Realtek needs to promote Jerry -- a beacon of customer service in the age of the "get lost" school of customer relations. I have attached the driver below. Caveat: I have not yet compiled the driver, so I don't know much more about it than I've said already, although the archive appears to contain the source code.

After having installed ubuntu 11.04 my laptop's wireless device (realtek rtl8192se on a packard bell laptop) disappears on ubuntu 11.04. Before, with ubuntu 10.10, I had no problems. Now, when I start ubuntu 11.04, sometimes the wireless card work, but most of times it doesn't: the wireless led is off, and with the lspci command I got no line about wireless card. If I restart the laptop and I start win7, the wireless card doesn't work there too! only after many reboots and/or shutdowns wireless card appears again.

I have downloaded the driver installed it, and it works fine. But i can't get to turn it off. I do have the ability to unload the driver's kernel modules and the sysyem does not see my card after that. That's ok, but i'm thinking it still uses my battery power. The wifi led is always on no matter what i do. The fn+<wifi key> doesn't to anything.

I have installed 9.04 ( I currently have it on dual boot with Windows XP) and my problem is that I have no internet connection. I have a Motorola modem with a Realtek RTL8139 Family Fast Ethernet NIC network card ( it's a wired connection, btw) When I plug in the cable, there's a little animation, but after a while I get the message: Wired connection is not active (or something like that) Here's what I did so far:
1) I ticked the Wake-On-Lan option in XP, since I read it in the forums that I could solve my problem. It did not
2) I turned off my modem, rebooted my system.
3) I deleted the Auto Ethernet network, and plugged in the cable again...no use.
4) I did an ifconfig, since I know that is what you guys really want
evajulia@Derek:~$ ifconfig

I recently purchased two MSI Windtop AE2220's. One for my home which uses a router with WPA2 protection and one for my office where I use WEP encryption.
The Realtek internal wireless card will not connect to a WEP router if you are running Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04. I have exhausted all suggestions on this site and all drivers found at Realtek's site.
I have been using Ubuntu since Hardy Heron, but sadly, painfully, I have had to install Windows 7 on my office machine until I find a wireless card compatible with the MSI Windtop AE2220, Lucid and WEP.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L655-S5061 laptop and dual-boot Windows 7 and Kubuntu Lucid Lynx. Windows detects and connects to the wireless network just fine, but in Kubuntu it will detect the network but can't connect to it. Sometimes Network Manager will say it's connected, but Konqueror can't load any websites. Plugging in an ethernet cable doesn't give me access to the internet, either.

when I updated from 10.04 to 10.10 beta, I lost my wireless on my Gateway MX3410 laptop. In 10.04, the wireless Realtek RTL8185 card was auto-detected, worked with the default driver.
So I installed the linux driver version of Realtek RTL8185. Although the driver shows up in the "Additional Drivers" panel under "Administration", the computer is not recognising the driver.
Below is all the specs of the current situation.

The Realtek RTL8111 wireless does not work in Mint 10 or Ubuntu 10.10. Works perfectly in Mint 9 and Ubuntu 10.04. No proprietary driver necessary. Has anyone managed to get it working in Ubuntu 10.10? : You can click the one you want to connect to and enter your security key. I just use WEP because it's easy. I enter the key and the system just tries to connect until it times out. You can repeat this process indefinitely. Wired works fine but after any available updates are installed, still no wireless capability.

I printed off the Readme file from RealTec and went though the following procedure. If anyone spots a glaring error could you please advise and I will try and fix. I changed to superuse using : sudo su and entered my password. All good so far.I was already in the directory containing the downloaded RealTec driver. I downloaded RLT8192SE ver 0019 as this was the closest to my hardware version and the latest driver available.
I used the command : make
and then : make install
Both these commands ran ok. However when I rebooted and activated wireless using Fn F10 on the laptop I was still disconnected from WIFI.
I then used : iwconfig wlan0 up
but this resulted in an error (see below)
root@Ubuntu:/home/jon/LDD/Drivers/test# iwconfig wlan0 up
iwconfig: unknown command "up"
root@Ubuntu:/home/jon/LDD/Drivers/test# ifconfig wlan0 up
