My spouse chose to check the "Remember Forever" password choice when opening a Samba share on the machine. After a few minutes of "You shouldn't do that!" lecture ... how can this be undone?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI was trying to reset my personal account's password in Ubuntu (via the root prompt in recovery mode),How do I undo the password set for root? From what I understand, it doesn't need a password, and I'm afraid I may have just ruined some built-in security feature that keeps root protected if you don't set a password.

"Simply change the symlink so that it points to /bin/bash. To do this, open a terminal, and type the following:
sudo rm -f /bin/sh
sudo ln -s /bin/bash /bin/sh
From now on your scripts should work as their authors expected."

I recently did a clean install of Ubuntu 9.10 and when I did I chose to have /home on it's own partition and have it encrypted. The more I think about it the more I regret this decision. What if I want to switch distros down the road? What if I have to boot from a live cd to back up files? Is there a way to "undo" the encrypted home folder permanently? I don't mind having it on it's own partition, it's just the encryption that makes me worry.

View 7 Replies View RelatedIf one accepts an update of a specific package via apt and decides the update isn't desired, what does one do? In other words, what is the most sensible and relatively easy way to rol-back to the previous version of that specific package without affecting anything else (dependencies aside of course).
I want to do this with a recent adobe plug in.
While trying to make a Winmodem work, I've installed drivers, done magic incantations in Terminal, etc., without keeping complete records of what I did. Is there a "clean" routine or something that will remove unused drivers, or do a system rollback, or some other way to clean up the mess?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI suppose I have a very common problem. While working on my project, I accidentaly hit 'rm file.tex' instead of 'rm file.aux' in the terminal of my Debian and now all of my work is gone. Could you please tell me if it is possible to undo this command? If soI should add that I am just a beginner in using the Linux system and though I have found some advice on my problem on websites, I am unable to follow it on my own. In other words I desperately need somebody to guide my through that process.
View 4 Replies View RelatedIn the "software sources" windows under the "Updates" tab I have checked "Pre-released updates" and installed all the updates. I no longer want to track the proposed updates and have unchecked that item. Now am back to just security and recommended checked. How do i get it to downgrade the packages that it has modified when I had "Pre-released" checked? I want to get back on the stable "Recommended Updates". It seems to have changed what it looks at for updates but did not downgrade the packages.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running OS X 10.5.8 and Ubuntu 9.04 on a Macbook 4,1, and I want to remove the Ubuntu partition so I can free up hard drive space. However, the linux swap partition is located in between the OS X and Ubuntu partitions, and GParted won't let me remove it when I boot from an Ubuntu Live disk, and OS X Disk Utility can't affect it either. I followed the dual booting instructions here, and I pretty much just want to undo all of it and get back to an OS X only machine.

View 9 Replies View Relatedsetting a resolution that my monitor can't handle, and now I can't figure out how to get back to a setting that my monitor can handle. When I first made the bad setting, the screen went black except for an "Out of Range" message in the middle, and wouldn't let me see anything to put it back. I ended up going to a text screen with a <Ctrl-Alt-F1>, logging in as root, and rebooting. Now, I can use all of my other user IDs (root, KDE test, "email only," etc.) just fine, but if I log in to the one with the bad res. setting, it just blacks the screen and I have to reboot again. The xorg.conf file doesn't even have any options for setting resolutions any more, so there's no way to explicitly disallow the one I set, and "deleting" (renaming) xorg.conf didn't help.

All of the system mail (alerts, error messages, informative messages, etc.) that's going to root is being redirected to my boss. I checked .mailrc and /etc/aliases for an alias that would equate root with my boss, but couldn't find anything. My boss doesn't want to be receiving these emails. Where else can the previous SA could have done this operation. How can I sub my email address for that of my boss' to be receiving these alert messages.

View 11 Replies View RelatedI'm brand new to ubuntu and very green when it comes to Linux in general.I have recently installed Ubuntu Desktop version 10.10 for my media pc (a friend of mine showed me xbmc, awesome!). I modified my install so that I don't have to enter a password when turning it on.The problem seems to be that when I did the install I chose to encrypt my home directory. Now, since I don't enter a password, the machine spews a few errors and does nothing. I finally got it to boot to a console window however I don't know how to undo what I did from the gui.I'm basically trying to get to System > Admin > Login Window > Security without the gui and "check the box" to require a password on login.Any clue as to which config file this setting is stored in?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Ubuntu 10.04. I'm trying to become familiar with the file system. I noticed my MP3 player (USB) is not mounted automatically when I plug it into the USB cable. I searched Google to find out how to auto mount this device and it worked. However, I didn't give this enough thought to what I was doing I guess. Now if the MP3 player is not connected to the USB cable the boot process stops at the splash screen waiting for the device. The window on the screen states the following:
The disk drive for /media/sdc1/ is not ready or not present. Continue to wait or press S to skip mounting or M to manual recovery.
I don't remember what I did to start this whole mess so I don't know how to undo it? Could someone please help me undo this? I would like the device to auto mount ONLY if it's plugged in if this is possible.

Did you play too much with compiz and after-a-while you realize that certain functions are not working anymore?
Well, just follow the steps below:
Quote:
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/compiz
Then,

i have a computer with 3 users on it, and a folder using samba that everyone on the network has access to. Lets say that, the folder is stored in /etc/sharedfolder. What happens is, when user1 puts a folder in it, then logs off, user 2 attempts to modify it and fails, because permission is set to 755, and they are not in the same group. (even if they were, it should still need to be 775) Anyway, my current solution is, every 5 minutes a crontab changes permission like so: chmod 777 -R /etc/sharedfiles && chown useradmin:superadmin -R /etc/sharedfiles Which works, but seeing as there is getting close to a gig in there, this is a bad solution, as it eats up the computers resources. Solutions that i think might work:
1) create a script that only changes permissions that need be changed.
2) change file permission settings to force all documents to inherit parent document settings
Is there a way to automatically set the wireless settings for all of the accounts on the system? If I change the encryption key, DNS settings etc, I like for them to be global and not have to have the other users (my kids) have to change settings (or bypass settings).
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an USB (Huawei 1751) modem for mobile broadband. I had it up and running in Ubuntu 9.10 but I had to clear the computer for various reasons. I have decided to only use LTS versions so for the reinstall I have used Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. I have downloaded and installed usb_modeswitch and can see that the modes is changed to the right value. After that I wanted to add a new mobile broadband connection in the network connections wizzard - but cannot see any settings for mobile broadband. I am sure it must be possible - but where is this function hidden in version 8.04 ?
