Ubuntu Networking :: Asus EeePC 1001HA - Install Netbook Edition 9.10 - Can't Get Wireless Network To Work

Jun 3, 2010

I have just purchased an Asus EeePC 1001HA netbook and I would like to install Ubuntu Netbook Edition 9.10 (love the look and the brilliant interface), but I can't get the wireless network to work. I am currently running from a 4Gb USB stick that has the LiveCD on it with a 1Gb persistence. The network notification area only shows wired and VPN connections. I have tried installing the Ralink 3090 driver but I have had no luck in getting the wireless to work.

Networking :: One Netbook - Two Connections - Two Names?

Mar 10, 2010

I have a netbook (toy) running Ubuntu 9.04. It has a wired Ethernet NIC and a wireless NIC. They both work fine but I have a question about how to integrate the netbook into my network.

Here is my network design:

Each computer has the reserved IP address devices listed in its host file.

So now comes the netbook, taylor13. For the moment I have hard coded IP addresses on the netbook as follows:

I have added to each host file:

I can now connect to the netbook with the desired interface so I guess all is well. However, this seems a little like a jury rig approach.

Is there a better way? Perhaps a configuration where I could request a connection to "taylor13" and the "system" would figure out what if any paths were available to the device and make the connection?

My router flippeth me the bird if I try to assign the same name to two IP addresses or the same IP address to two device names.

I also realized as I write this that I have a chance of stepping on 192.168.0.113 if I do not reserver it in DHCP.

Ubuntu Networking :: Lost Both Wired & Wireless Connections ?

Dec 10, 2010

Running Ubuntu 10.10 on a Dell 710m. Fresh install of OS yesterday. Initially I had wired connection but no wireless. So I started chasing threads & trying different downloads & commands [WITHOUT KNOWING essentially what I was doing; throw your rocks at me HERE] & now I have lost the wired connection also.

Also:
[a] If I go into System > Administration > Additional Drivers, I get "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system."

[b] As far as being able to copy a downloaded driver [using a working M$oft machine with net connection] onto an SD card & transferring that driver to the Dell laptop, I have tried formatting 3 different SD cards with the Dell, & each time I come up with various failure errors--& I have no idea why something as simple as formatting an SD card isn't working.

Ubuntu :: EeePC Netbook Remix Or Desktop?

Sep 14, 2010

I just bought an Asus EeePC 1201PN and am planning on installing Ubuntu on it. I prefer the traditional desktop interface and thus would like to install it. I have read accounts of people having no problems with it on the 1201N and am assuming it will be the same for my netbook. My question is is there really any difference if I install the Netbook Remix Edition then get the Desktop-Switcher and change it to the traditional interface? I heard that the NRE doesn't use Nautilus. If I install NRE then use the Desktop-Switcher will I be able to use Nautilus or will it still be the NRE with everything else to "optimize" the netbook's performance?

Would it be possible to install the Desktop Edition then get repositories for things that will help my netbook perform better?

General :: Ubuntu Netbook Remix Install For EeePC / Xandros?

Jan 5, 2010

Using eeePC1000 with Xandros installed and investigating installation of Ubuntu, especially seeing that there was a netbook version. Have had some problems creating a bootable USB, but followed a thread on the netbook forum that I think will be useful. Before going ahead I wanted some advice on a few things:

- does the Ubuntu OS install over Xandros or is there work to be done post install to clear Xandros out?
- if i want to keep using Thunderbird, StarOffice etc. as supplied with Xandros can I install these to Ubuntu?

Sorry if above all seems obvious: sites I've been to, or books are great at telling you about how good the OS is and how to install but nothing on what happens to the old OS.

Ubuntu :: No Connections With A Netbook

Jan 26, 2010

I installed 8.04 on my EeePC 2005. I use the Windows dual boot option. The netbook's hard drive was factory set with two partitions c and d. Windows XP is on c; I put Ubuntu on d. In Windows, I have both wireless and ethernet (sp?) working fine.In Ubuntu, I have no wireless and no land line. The manual connection wizard pop-up shows no networks anywhere. How can I get Ubuntu connected? Would it be simpler to load another distro like Easy Peasy on top of Ubuntu? Or should I delete Ubuntu and start over? Or is there an easy fix for 8.04?

Fedora :: Vnc Connections Broken Or Lost

Mar 9, 2011

1. hardware: HP/Compaq desktop, about 4 years old, 1GB mem
2. FC14 (copied live CD to HD) and updated
3. sshd, telnet, vnc and samba activated (mostly default config)
4. disabled firewall and selinux
5. I have tested all those succesfully from WinXP workstation. For terminal session, I used putty.exe and/or telnet.exe

When I worked with the machine (say TestMachine), I noticed some times that the vnc connection was lost, but restarted succesfully. Similar thing happened with ssh. Also the samba connection was lost, but it recovered after hour or two. Then I tested leaving a constant ping on, and it revealed that some breaks happen. But it is not an infrastructure problem, as pingtest on other machine in the same network is OK.

Again, I tried to connect. No ssh, telent, vnc or samba worked. But surprisingly, I was able to telnet to another system first and then telnet to the TestMachine from there. I was able to use it for a while. But then, session was broken and now I can't access it anymore via network. I tried to browse /var/logs but I didn't find anything revealing yet.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Netbook Remix - Lost?

May 1, 2010

I'm just coming back to Ubuntu after last seeing a GNOME desktop almost a year ago now. Just installed the new 10.04 version on my EEE 1000h with little to no problems. However, since then I've been kinda lost. Is it just me, or has Ubuntu been changed substantially over the last two distributions?

1) How do I change the netbook remix desktop mode? I like the left menu design, however I like the traditional desktop even more. Unfortunately I can't seem to find the desktop mode switcher anywhere.

2) Where is the grub menu.lst found? Looked in the /boot/grub/ folder and it doesn't seem to be there anymore.

3) Where's my multi touch? Do I have to install a package or configure a setting somewhere? With Jaunty it was a simple install and play. This time it doesn't seem that way at all.

I had previously installed ubuntu 10.04 and then had an extra partition that had data in it.Went ahead to boot with the backtrack 4 disk BUT it did not give me an option for installing them side-by side so i did it manually by editing the partition with the partitioner! I had 2 swamp spaces one i which was initially there for Ubuntu and the other i created! Then simply formated ine partition with EXT3 and mountpoint of / which made two of them!after installation, the grub shows that there is another OS but when it does not load!

Ubuntu Networking :: EeePC 901 Dropping WiFi Connection - Need New Driver?

Jan 5, 2010

Here's the situation: I've got an eee pc 901 running Ubuntu 9.10 netbook remix. I'm using it to connect to a WPA-encrypted wireless network on a WRT54GL running dd-wrt. It mostly connects and works ok, but sometimes it just stops working for no apparent reason (the netbook still shows itself as connected), but you can't get anywhere until you manually disconnect and reconnect. Other times, it will drop the connection, and then quickly reconnect (or sometimes not). Obviously, this behavior is pretty irritating. At first I thought the problem was with the router, but I checked the logs there and they all seem fine, and other computers on the same router don't have this problem. Looking at "dmesg | tail" on my netbook, I see a lot of instances of the following error, which I'm thinking is probably the problem:

Code:
[11137.762233] ERROR!!! RTMPCancelTimer failed, Timer hasn't been initialize!
[11142.872797] ===>rt_ioctl_giwscan. 4(4) BSS returned, data->length = 440

[11163.952056] ERROR!!! RTMPCancelTimer failed, Timer hasn't been initialize!

I searched for that error message and I found this Ubuntu bug report: [URL] that describes symptoms that match mine. In that report, a poster mentions that he compiled and installed a new version of the wireless driver from the Ralink website, and it fixed his problem. Do you think installing a new driver would be good? Or has that updated driver already been added to the kernel since that bug report was filed? I've never compiled a kernel module before.

One other thing, I also see repeated instances of these lines (or similar ones) in dmesg, which look like they could be related.
Code:

May 1, 2010

I have an eeePC 1000HG, basically identical to the 1000H but with an integrated 3G modem.

Mostly the netbook works fine, the only big problem is the 3G modem will not connect to the network.I added a "Mobile Broadband" network connection from the network icon at the top right.The OS has detected a modem, it reports as a "HUAWEI Technology HUAWEI Mobile" in the mobile broadband network setup wizard, and as the follwing with lsusb;

Bus 001 Device 002: ID 12d1:1001 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. E620 USB Modem I don't know whether that's correct - I can't find information anywhere which definitively specifies which model of modem is in there.... I did find some reference to it being a Huawei E770V, but I don't know if that's true or not. I have installed the modeswitch packages from Synaptic, which made no apparent difference.

I followed the wizard and picked Australia as a location and Virgin Mobile as a provider and Mobile Broadband as a billing plan. When I try and connect I just get an error saying the connection failed. The modem worked out of the box under eeebuntu 3.

I've tried various things suggested in similar threads (putting in the DNS server info manually, disabling ipv6, restarting about a gazillion times), but nothing's worked so far. (My other computer, a Mac, can connect just fine.)

Attempted to install ndiswrapper, failed miserably, and I'm not sure if that's just for situations where the wifi itself doesn't work?

I'd be very grateful for any suggestions.
