Ubuntu Networking :: How To Make Wireless Shortcut Function Properly
May 10, 2011
i'm using ASUS K40IE laptop, installed Ubuntu 10.10 and online upgraded to 11.04 (natty), and i have a problem about my wifi.This laptop using Fn+F2 to enable/disable wifi (using Windows work properly with driver from asus) and have a Led that trigger on/off.Using ubuntu, that's shortcut it's useless. i press Fn+F2 many times, but that led indicator never turn off. Is there a way to make that shortcut can function properly? Actually, i'm not often using wifi, so i want to make it default disable on start up. Both ubuntu 10.10 or 11.04 can't using this shortcut.

The announcement of several new make scripts in the 2.6.32 release notes is very exciting.1.8. Easy local kernel configuration.Most people uses the kernel shipped by distros - and that's good. But some people like to compile their own kernels from kernel.org, or maybe they like following the Linux development and want to try it. Configuring your own kernel, however, has become a very difficult and tedious task - there're too many options, and some times userspace software will stop working if you don't enable some key option. You can use a standard distro .config file, but it takes too many time to compile all the options it enables.
To make easier the process of configuration, a new build target has been added: make localmodconfig. It runs "lsmod" to find all the modules loaded on the current running system. It will read all the Makefiles to map which CONFIG enables a module. It will read the Kconfig files to find the dependencies and selects that may be needed to support a CONFIG. Finally, it reads the .config file and removes any module "=m" that is not needed to enable the currently loaded modules. With this tool, you can strip a distro .config of all the unuseful drivers that are not needed in our machine, and it will take much less time to build the kernel. There's an additional "make localyesconfig" target, in case you don't want to use modules and/or initrds.

I'm using Ubuntu desktop 10.10 on an Hp Pavilion dv2700 laptop. Most of the time I have had no issues, however on two separate occasions the wifi and bluetooth have been disabled, the switch on the front of the computer has no effect.the enable wireless function is grayed out, so I was not able to enable it. The first time it happened, (I didn't have an Ethernet cord at the time), I booted into windows Vista, thinking I could connect to the internet and find an answer. Low and behold I had the same problem in windows, however I was able to enable the wifi and blue tooth in windows. Now, rebooting into Ubuntu, the problem was resolved. The second time around the same thing happened, and I booted into Windows to fix the problem. I have done a search for known bugs on this issue, but none seem to relate to my exact problem. Is there a way to enable the wifi when it is grayed out? like in windows?Like I said this has only happened twice, but I had to boot into windows to fix the problem. I really want to delete windows all together, but if I have to keep it around awhile to fix this issue I guess I will.

Computer is an ACER Power F6, BIOS AMI F6, XPPro installed, C only 80 Gygabites, 2 Gyg RAM, 3000MHZ Pentium4.today I installed 10.0.4 from Canonical 32 bit, all was ok,I followed the suggested dual boot partition and proceedings,which gave XP 44 Gyga and Ubuntu 37 Gyga ,successfully finished install,rebooted and began updating and customizing with great zest as I was really happy about this new version. then I decided to make a break of an hour and thought : 'let's try now the suspend function as i read about it not working properly sometimes'.....so an hour later i tried to revive from suspension,but the pc remains utterly insensitive and black.Tried Del to get into BIOS,F12 to get to boot config,BART PE disk i made for an XP machine in the past, and tried to boot again from the live Ubuntu Cd .....all in vain.I suspect it might be the fact the BIOS was set by me for
1st Floppy
2nd CDROM
3rd HD or PenDrive
as this machine I inherited since a few days dates back to 2006 and has no burner only CD-DVD reader and Floppy is disabled in BIOS.After Ubuntu install the machine stopped for a long time on a black screen with white reading about errors during install,then I reset it and it seemed like a good install anyway.Apart from checking if the HD is still ok,what can I do or try in such a situation?

I have an Asus Eee PC with Ubuntu Netbook Remix (Unity). The other day, I turned off the wireless using the keyboard shortcut to save battery life when I was somewhere without wireless, but now it's not turning back on. I tried restarting, I've done the keyboard shortcut several times, and it still just says "disconnected" for wireless and wired, even though there are several wireless networks around me right now. There aren't any options in Network Connections or Network Tools to turn on the wireless. Is there a way to manually turn it back on?

I have been using an XFX 5770 with Windows 7 in EyeFinity and running a 5760x1080 resolution. My setup is as follows for Windows
x3 Viewsonic VA2223WM monitors (vga/dvi only)
I have two monitors connected connected with DVI and my 3rd monitor is connected with a DVI to Active Display port adapter, bizlink brand. This works wonderfully in Windows 7.
I cannot get my 3 displays to function properly in Ubuntu. I have tried removing the display port adapter and connecting my 3rd monitor with a DVI to HDMI cable and still no success. I can only use any of my 3 monitors in a dual configuration...how do I get the 3rd extended? Using the ATI driver that was auto downloaded for me...

I have a simple fileserver built of my good old ASUS TX97 with K6-III 400 MHz. It boots the latest debian stable from a PATA 1G IDE flashdisk. For almost 3 years I have hooked on a SATA Samsung HD502JI 500G harddisk onto a VIA VT6421 based SATA Controller, which work real fine. Since I ran out of diskspace I bought a Samsung HD204UI 2T drive, hung it on the second SATA port, and it took about 8 hours to copy the 500G data from the old disk to the new one. All seems fine this far. However, if I stream a movie from the 2T drive, the movie freezes every now and then, and Dmesg get spammed with errors. The 500G disk still works fine.Of course the VIA SATA is just SATA 1.0 (1.5Gbit/s), but I thought all harddisks are backwards compatible. Since the 2T drive is recognized, the serial line-protocol is fine I suppose. I have also flashed the latest F4EG firmware to the HD204UI succesfully.

I have our own C written program code which is communicating with a third party C++ written program code to run a moving device. We have successfully communicated with the third party code with wrapper functions. (Thanks to member in LQ that helped me solved this.)Now, we tried to run some functions to move the device. I think it is better for me to attach the related code first. pro.c (The source code we used to run the device)
Code:
#include<stdio.h>
#include "wrapper.h"

I have a dual boot (XP Pro and F13) laptop. This laptop has a Ralink RT2501USB Wireless Adapter which works perfectly fine on XP. But when it comes to F13, adapter only works properly when I am physically next to my router. When I move few feet away the strength of the connection drops from 100% to around 40%. But even though 40% should be okay for slow connection to internet, I can't get any internet access at all. I have tried three different routers with same results on each.
When I boot same machine with windows XP, all works fine. I can move to any part of my house and I will still have the connection without any issues.I can see that RT73 driver is installed if I check in add remove program under system.I am not an expert but to me its seems that the drivers on F13 for RT2501USB are not as good as on windows?

I need to monitorize which Wi-Fi APs are in coverage, so periodically I perform a scan whith "sudo iwlist ath0 scan". The problem appears when disconnecting an AP (from the electrical network). In this case, iwconfig shows the disconnected AP during 30-40 seconds after the disconnection.
I'm trying to figure out how to order the kernel to actually refresh the list of in coverage APs, and avoid to show nets that were in coverage but aren't now.

I have a Dell Studio 1558 with a Broadcom wireless adapter. It's a brilliant piece of hardware and love everything about it except some of it's overheating problems. When I first bought it with Windows 7 pre-installed, it had an application installed on it called PeerNet, which creates a wireless network for other computers (and wifi-enabled phones) to connect to it. Simultaneously, you could also share your internet connection with these users. The internet connection could be either wired or wireless.
My question is, how do I go about finding the same functionality on Ubuntu since I know my hardware is capable of it. (I believe in Windows 7, it creates a virtual adapter that it uses) I know there are ways to share a WIRED internet connections with some help with the terminal, but I haven't found a way to share a WIRELESS internet connection. The network manager allows you to create a wireless network but I'm unable to connect to another wireless network at the same time.
The reason I mentioned mobile phones is because my mobile (Android 2.2) is unable to find a wireless network created by the network manager, but another laptop is (without internet access that is). I've noticed that mobile devices and iPod's aren't able to find ad-hoc networks on Windows PCs as well.
I hope someone out there will be able to find a solution for me (and surely others as well!) Maybe the final release of 11.04 will help out later if nothing turns up now.

First off, I have been quite clumsy lately. I recently poured water into my computer by accident; and it works somewhat fine, though the keys A and E do not work. At this point I am using an external keyboard, but since it's a laptop and I am using it at school, that is not what one would wish for. So, my question is; is there any way which will allow me to use the Keyboard Shortcuts to make a shortcut which will for example use ALT+Ctrl+<button> to write the letter A?
My second question is; Do anyone know what has happened with what I will describe in the following text; or perhaps recognice the problem and a solution? One of my friends has installed XUbuntu on his netbook. It has been running just fine; and for a while after he upgraded to 9.10, his computer went somewhat broke. It boots up fine, and it loads the login screen; but instead of being able to log in, it switches to a terminal. We have tried using it to log in, but as none of us are any good with the terminal we have not succeeded.

I've been searching for a while now but can't find what I'm looking for. I want to make a keyboard shortcut that runs a script that types keystrokes wherever the cursor is. For example, if I am in a text editor and press "ctrl+alt+q", I would like it to type some predetermined string to the page. On Windows, AutoHotKey does this. I can't seem to get it working in gnome, though.
I have installed lineakd, and I have a file ~/.scripts/type.sh that looks like:
#!/bin/sh
xsendkeys "blahblahblah"
I have the command sh ~/.scripts/type.sh set to the key combination I want in system->preferences->keyboard-shortcuts.
I'm sure I'm not using xsendkeys correctly, but couldn't find much documentation on it. Anybody know how xsendkeys works or how I might solve this problem another way?

After installing a few packages without a package manager (yast), I was wonding if there is anyway to make a shortcut (or application link or whatever its call) for any given program you install to show up automatically on all users desktops and start menus(for lack of a linux term). For example I installed firefox to a folder in the /opt directory and found that i could drag and drop the shell command to the desktop to make a shortcut, or i could create a new application link on my desktop and point it at firefox. But what If i wanted that to show up for all users somewhere by default? Is there anything like the "all users" desktion winXP or the "public user" in win7?

i have been running windows from ME through to Windows 7 over the years. and i must admit that because of all the flaws with the earlier versions and those wonderful little viruses that seem to show up even though your teenagers swear they didn't do anything ,have made me somewhat skilled at formatting and reinstalling the OS to the point where i have done it for several other ppl to help them out. I rather enjoy doing it actually.
and i have been a big fan of lets just call it "open source" windows software. now this ubuntu thing seems to have taken some of the fun away..
i ran the cd version of 10.10 and really liked what i saw so i installed it alongside my windows 7. naturally as luck would have it something went astray and i can no longer boot to win7. not a big deal. i was going to format and reinstall anyways. ha ha.
i have been reading through the forum learning what i can but now my question
i still have a machine running windows on my home network.
what i would like to do is make a shortcut to a folder on it from my ubuntu desktop. i do have full access to the machine and the folder , i would just like a shortcut .

OS: OpenSuse 11.3 / 32-bit / Gnome. Updates to latest.Issue: while using uTorrent Server Alpha (for Linux) i have encountered a shortcut malfunction. After the program was successfully installed (by that, i mean download and simply modify its settings to be able to execute it as a program, and double click on it & keep it running in a Terminal) and ran for the first time, it came to me that i should make a shortcut to the program, on one of my two "taskbars". So i simply created one and correctly pointed to the application (i left it on my desktop). But after restart, i tried to access it via this shortcut and it indeed started, but returned an error, that the graphical interface (html based) situated and :8080/gui/ was not there, and that it should be downloaded. So i stopped it and went to the desktop folder & ran it in a terminal and VOILA, no problem, everything was good as new.
PS: i was not running the program under sudo and i changed its default login configuration (from a simple "admin" username, to a proper username and password).
