Ubuntu Networking :: How To Connect To A Switch

Nov 5, 2010

I have an HP ProCurve 2424M 24 port switch and I can't access it through the browser because I can't find the IP address of the switchhave tried resetting back to factory configuration, but still can't find the IP. So I have a null-modem cable (serial) and am trying to get into the switch via the terminal. The only thing is that I don't know what commands to type? Do I need to configure the port? If so, how do I do that? I'm not necessarily a newbie to Linux, but when it comes to the terminal

Red Hat / Fedora :: HBA Card - Connect The HBA To Another Switch Port

Dec 3, 2010

I have 2 HBA's in my system, in that one shows as READY state and the other HBA shows as DEAD state. I have asked the datacenter guys to to connect the HBA to another switch port and I rebooted the server. After reboot the second HBA came to READY state but after some time again it went to DEAD state.

Host adapter:loop state = <DEAD>, flags = 0x45a03

Is this the problem with the server or with the storage end

Hardware :: Can No Longer Connect To San Device / When San Switch Changed

Aug 6, 2010

I have 2 HP DL585 servers with Emulex fibre channel cards that were originally running RHEL 5.3 and 5.2 with kernel 2.6.18-92.1.22.el5 connected to a san.I have now patched these to RHEL 5.5, kernel 2.6.194-8.1.el5.The san team have moved the cabling from a standard san switch to a fabric san switch and I have tried to configure multipath.Since the cable move, the servers display 2 lines of:shpchp:shpc_init: cannot reserve mmio region then the boot halts with sda5 device or resource busy.

Returning the cables to the original switch and removing the multipath config allows the servers to boot. What is the shpchp error and is this causing the problem? Why would changing the switch the cable plugs into cause the server to fail to boot with the device busy message? Also, it's not easy to arrange downtime on these servers, so I don't know when I'll next have a chance to reboot them.

Ubuntu Networking :: Need To Switch Default NIC

May 10, 2010

I have 2 NIC's in my mythbuntu 10.0.4 box, one is connected to a closed network eth0 and the other to an Internet gateway eth1.

For some reason Ubuntu always makes eth0 the default network card, even if I delete the connections and add them in different a order. Because of this I can't access the Internet w/o disabling the private network card.

I could just switch the cables over but this should be doable in software and I'd like to know how.

I have my server connected directly to my modem which is providing me with Internet access on eth1 and is working fine. I have dhcp and dns setup on eth0 which is connected to my router. The router shows that it is connected to the Internet but when the router gives a client computer an IP address, the client is unable to connect to the Internet but can connect to the router. I will post my configuration files below with my current configuration.

Ubuntu Networking :: Switch Won't Work With Machine

Dec 23, 2010

I got a Ubuntu machine running a local web server. It is connected to an archaic 10mbit hub, and I'd like a little bit faster network. I got a new 100/1000mbit switch connected to my router. I have 3 other PC's running off it, no problems at all. No configuration was necessary, and all existing cables worked fine.

Since the router and hub are located at the opposite end of the house, and the switch is in my PC room, I made up a new cable to connect it to my Ubuntu machine. It's just a straight-through cable, just like the other cables connecting the switch to other PC's. Okay so, when I plug the cable in to the machine I get no ethernet lights on either the machine nor the switch. But here's the kicker: I plug the cable into my laptop (running Windows 7), and it works perfectly. I restart the machine with the cable in, and get a green light. As soon as Ubuntu loads up, no lights, no connectivity. It shouldn't matter, but I'm running a static IP on the machine. I also have static IP's on the other PC's connected to the switch and nothing had to be changed.

Ubuntu Networking :: Building A Firewall And Switch?

Apr 6, 2011

I am wanting to build myself a Linux based firewall and network switch but I am not entirely sure where to start. I would like to point out that I am aware that it would be easier and quicker to just buy a switch and use that, but this is an intellectual exercise.

What I want to do is have a NIC which has the internet coming in. The traffic is then passed through the firewall program (I think IP tables is what I should be using?).

Now my main issue is that I will have quite a few Network Interfaces to manage. The machine could easily assign IPs by DHCP and act as the DNS server but what would I need to use to share the internet connection to all the NICs? There will be at least 4 interfaces, but possibly up to 12.

That would cause problems, right?

So, is there a way, to say to the switch, "Hey, 10.3.2.1 is on Port 1, and nowhere else. Do not let anyone use the IP 10.3.2.1 on any other port, and if they do, disallow the traffic."

Ubuntu Networking :: No Speed Improvement With Gigabit NIC / Switch?

Jan 13, 2010

I recently upgraded a server's networking card to a Gigabit NIC, and got a hold of a Gigabit switch (Here's a link) in the hopes of increasing my network performance - however, I'm getting around 10 MB/s throughput now, which is exactly what I used to get with the old 10/100 switch & NIC. The new switch recognizes both computers as Gigabit (the other machine has always had a Gigabit NIC), and both computers say they're gigabit - I've found various sites around the interwebz recommending tweaking some TCP/IP buffer settings, which I have tried to no avail. I also saw that hard drive speed is usually the limiting factor. According to "hdmarp -t", the server HDD (definitely the slower of the two) is:

Code:
Timing buffered disk reads: 226 MB in 3.00 seconds = 75.26 MB/sec

So that's obviously not my issue. The cabling is CAT6 - I ran it myself, but if I'd mis-wired the end connections, wouldn't it just not work at all? I admit, I bought cheap NIC's (I'm not going for like 124.9 MB/s throughput here..), and I didn't expect them to be stellar, but I certainly expected the speeds to improve. I'm moving files from a server running Ubuntu 9.04 to a Windows machine - I've tried both my Samba shares on the server and an SFTP transfer: they both have about the same throughput.

Ubuntu Networking :: Disconnect Pc From Switch It Sometimes Connects Before It Times Out

May 19, 2010

I have my internet connection via a wireless USB adapter and that works fine. Recently I connected my pc (Ubuntu 9.10) through a wired switch to my modified xbox so I can watch my videos in my office. I can share my content with my xbox (except for the items on my external USB HD's - I am working on that and will post that question elsewhere) but when I have my PC's wired connection plugged into the switch I can not surf the web or check email. It gets stuck at resolving host and then times out. If I disconnect the pc from the switch it sometimes connects before it times out. Usually it is quicker if I reboot without the wired intranet connection.

Ubuntu Networking :: Internet Stops When LAN Switch Is Switched ON

Jul 29, 2010

My PC is connected to an modem (DHCP) with IP 192.168.1.21 on eth0 Internet works perfectly I have installed an additional LAN card and configured it as eth1 with IP of 192.168.0.1 When I connect this LAN card to a LAN switch which in turn is connected to 6 other PCs, the internet stops working. As soon as I switch OFF the LAN switch, I am able to access internet. The IP addresses of the other PCs are configured as 192.168.0.2 etc. with gateway as 192.168.0.1 and DNS same as the DNS on the external interface. I can ping 192.168.0.1 from the LAN but neither LAN nor the main PC can access net. I was planning to Masquerade and NAT the other computers without using squid

My setup is as follows

ISP - Modem(192.168.1.1) - Ubuntu desktop 9.04(external interface eth0 192.168.1.21 & internal interface eth1 192.168.0.1) - switch - LAN (comprising of Ubtuntu 9.04, 9.10, 10.4 & XP machines with IP 192.168.0.2 - 8 and gateway of 192.168.0.1) I did NAT as per [URL]
This worked perfectly well 1 day Next day onwards whenever the LAN switch is "ON" the main Ubuntu wudnt get internet and the internet connection would work only when the LAN switch is turned "OFF". Even if all the PCs in LAN were to be switched off, the main Ubuntu would behave similarly i.e. internet would work only when switch isn't connected to it or switched off.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Is Disabled By Hardware Switch?

May 21, 2011

i hate to start a new thread that is already discussed in many places. But after hours and hours of digging, i am thinking there might be a 5 minute solution. But only if i know that. I own a lenovo ideapad y450. my networking controllers are...

Quote:

Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 5100 AGN [Shiloh] Network Connection
Broadcom Corporation NetLink BCM5784M Gigabit Ethernet PCIe (rev 10)

The problem is i cannot access wifi. The network manager says the wireless is disabled by hardware switch.

My hardware switch for wireless (on the laptop) is infact ON.

[Code]...

During natty installation (it was a fresh one) i had ticked for third party installations but had no internet running at that time. now the additional drivers under hardware in system settings shows nothing. just blank. NO MATTER WHAT I DID I HAVE COME TO THE FIRST STEP AGAIN. MY WIRELESS IS DISABLED BY HARDWARE SWITCH. where is this switch & how do i switch it on (if thatz so easy.) but all the solutions given in other thread were specific to some system or condition and mine somehow did not match.
