Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Is Disabled By Hardware Switch

Jun 10, 2011

Just installed ubuntu 11.04. It told me a driver was missing and installed the Broadcom STA driver. I believe it went on line after that, but I restarted and its not going back online.

Also according to 'rfkill list all' my wifi seems to be hard blocked.

EDIT: also iwconfig outputs this:

Code:
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:off/any

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Is Disabled By Hardware Switch?

May 21, 2011

i hate to start a new thread that is already discussed in many places. But after hours and hours of digging, i am thinking there might be a 5 minute solution. But only if i know that. I own a lenovo ideapad y450. my networking controllers are...

Quote:

Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 5100 AGN [Shiloh] Network Connection
Broadcom Corporation NetLink BCM5784M Gigabit Ethernet PCIe (rev 10)

The problem is i cannot access wifi. The network manager says the wireless is disabled by hardware switch.

My hardware switch for wireless (on the laptop) is infact ON.

[Code]...

During natty installation (it was a fresh one) i had ticked for third party installations but had no internet running at that time. now the additional drivers under hardware in system settings shows nothing. just blank. NO MATTER WHAT I DID I HAVE COME TO THE FIRST STEP AGAIN. MY WIRELESS IS DISABLED BY HARDWARE SWITCH. where is this switch & how do i switch it on (if thatz so easy.) but all the solutions given in other thread were specific to some system or condition and mine somehow did not match.

Ubuntu Networking :: HP G60 Laptop Wireless Disabled By Hardware Switch?

Jul 16, 2011

I'm in the process of setting up my parents' HP G60-630US laptop with Ubuntu 11.04 Natty. Installation went fine, but now I am trying to get the wireless set up and am encountering an annoying problem: The wireless drop down menu will not allow me to enable wireless because "wireless is disabled by hardware switch". When I try to turn on the wireless via the glowing orange wireless button above the keyboard nothing seems to happen.

When I enter rfkill list in terminal, it returns the following:

0: phy1: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: yes
Hard blocked: yes
1: hp-wifi: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: yes

[Code]...

I'm not really sure what this output means. I wasn't able to find any threads the addressed this issue specifically. If there is a quick and easy solution to this issue, or if this is a known problem with no solution, I'd like to know either way.

p.s. if it helps, lspci -v lists the wireless card as: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01)

I'm unable to disable the 'wireless disabled by hardware switch' message. I've tried rfkill unblock all - no effect. It remains hard blocked after running the unblock command, rebooting, alternating the switch in windows, alternating the bios setting. Wireless internet does not work because of this.

Ubuntu Networking :: HP Pavilion Wireless Enable/Disable Button / "Wireless Disabled By Hardware Switch"?

May 11, 2011

I've had a host of problems since upgrading to 11.04 Natty Narwhal, so let's deal with these 1 at a time.

I've got a Hewlett-Packard Pavilion G60 laptop. Next to the power button is a handy wireless on/off button. This has always worked well with previous editions (9.04,through 10.10). first press toggles the wireless off, second press toggles it on.

Not so in 11.04. The toggle off works great, first time. But, it will not toggle back on. Not after any number of tries, not after restarting, not after booting into other OS's (9.10 and Vista) re-enabling it there and then booting back into Narwhal. to further complicate the issue, this feature bypass the network manager, so toggling the wireless off by the switch leaves me showing no wireless adapter in the network manager. I also restarted, switched from Unity to a Gnome session, but the issue still persists.

As my only network options are wireless, this has become a substantial inconvenience.
----
EDIT: so the network util is actually saying "wireless disabled by hardware switch". Also noticed it I enable it in 9.10, reboot to 11.04 (where I inevitably fail to re-enable it), then reboot into 9.10, it will initially be disabled. The key difference is in 9.10 I have the ability to enable wifi using the hardware button. It seems that 11.04 is remembering that wireless is disabled between boots. Is there a place it might be storing this value? If so, I may be able simply to set the value as enabled, since toggling that silly button isn't working.
-----
EDIT 2:
found this thread:"Wireless disabled by hardware switch" bug? - Natty
seems to be a similar issue. I'll be following how that one develops, too.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Not Working - "wireless Is Disabled By Hardware Switch"

Jun 23, 2011

Just upgraded to the newest version of Ubuntu(unity), and my wireless isn't working. I have the 14e4:4315 Wireless Card so I followed this posts [URL].... And still have no wifi, when I click the icon in the menu bar it says under "Wireless Networks": "wireless is disabled by hardware switch", which ins't true because on my Vostro 1520, there is only one switch and it is in the on position. I've tried 3 versions of ubuntu and none of them work with wifi getting tired of it.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade From 10.04 To 10.10 - Wireless (grrr) - Wifi Switch DISABLED

Dec 22, 2010

I decided to wing it and upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 once I developed odd wireless issues (grrr) where I could only get on wireless if I booted up Ubuntu with my wifi switch DISABLED and then right away enabled it once I was logged in. The funny part is, it distinctly said 10.10 available in update manager. I get it done, power up, System - About Ubuntu - 11.04.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Is Disabled On 9.10?

Jul 16, 2010

I cannot seem to enable my wireless connection in 9.10. I know that the connection WAS WORKING maybe a month or so ago. However, 99% of the time I am wired.I am using a BCM4312 It shows up in lspci The drivers are loaded (wl, lib80211 and lib80211_crypt_tkip) If I look at System->Administration->Hardware Drivers the Broadcom STA driver is active. dmesg says that the interface is eth1 but then moves it to eth2 If I click on the network icon in the panel I have options for connecting to eth0 (wired lan which works fine) but under "Wireless Networks" it says "Wireless is disabled" in gray.

Ubuntu Networking :: Source Of Disabled Wireless?

Jun 28, 2010

My wireless was working fine for about a year using 9.10 until I installed an update about May 28 2010. After that my HP laptop did not recognize any wireless routers including my Netgear. In early June I upgraded to 10.04. My HP laptop has: product: AR5001 Wireless Network Adapter vendor: Atheros Communications Inc. Dose the following apply when looking for the source of my disabled wireless found at: [URL]

Setting wireless regulatory domain via module option no longer supported. Ubuntu 10.04 LTS enables the CRDA wireless regulatory framework for controlling which wireless channels are usable and visible in a particular location. If you previously had to use the module option similar to that below in /etc/modprobe.d/options.conf to allow access to certain channels in your locality then you may find that wireless will not function at all: options cfg80211 ieee80211_regdom=EU You should remove this kernel module option on upgrade from releases earlier than Ubuntu 9.04 and use the iw*reg command instead. (This change was made in Ubuntu 9.04.) Here are the results for the Code sudo lshw -C network

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Internet Is Disabled?

I am sick of Vista. I installed Ubuntu today. Looking forward to using it more. However I am having problems with the internet.

My wireless internet is on the on setting, however, the light will not switch from orange to green (if I load Vista instead, the light changes). Broadcom BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN [14e4:4311], It says my wireless is disabled. I can not figure out how to enable it.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Disabled - How To Re-enable

Aug 22, 2010

We're on vacation here with free wifi and I brought two laptops. The older of the two laptops running Ubuntu 10.04 and a Broadcom wireless chip suddenly wouldn't work this morning. I checked and it says wireless disabled, however wireless is grayed out when I right click on network manager. I have -no- idea what to do. I've never seen wireless just die like that. I popped open the cover but the wireless card is fine. I re-seated it, booted back up, still no sign of it.

What can I do?

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Disabled / Enable This?

Sep 10, 2010

I updated from Ubuntu 9 to 10 some while ago and can no longer connect to the internet via wireless. The computer is a Medion 96290 with a USB wireless card. Running "lsusb" gives code...

This tells me a driver is installed but it may not be the correct one. I copied this driver from the Windows driver file.

Network Manager shows "Wireless Network" greyed out and "wireless is disabled".

WICD shows net8187b as the installed driver and that the hardware is present.

There is a wireless switch on the keyboard which it was not necessary to use in Ubuntu 9 and is inoperative in Ubuntu 10.

I have searched through and applied many suggestions without success and have posted this problem on a couple of forums, again without success.
