Ubuntu Networking :: Getting Full Performance Out Of Wireless Card
Mar 29, 2011
I installed a new PCI wireless card (Broadcom Corporation BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN) today I got it to work but, I am not getting the right download speeds before I was downloading at 700kb/s and 1mb/s but now its downloading at speeds like 200kb/s 250 being the highest I've seen it all night
Some more specs:
01:0a.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Controller [14e4:4320] (rev 02)
And I do have the Restricted driver installed and activated, also I was reading that restricted drivers slows performance, is that true?

I have ubuntu lucid running on Dell 230 PC, linksys WPN600 N wireless PCI network card connecting to a Cisco E3000 dual channel router.
Kernel: 2.6.32-33-generic
Installed Ralink driver v2.4.0.0
iwconfig shows that the bit rate is 130Mb/s and link quality is 98/100. I'm using the wcid network manager instead of defaul gnome one. I'm getting lots of packet loss and performance is very bad. The connection is practically unusable. I've tried installing the compat wireless backport package but that did not work at all.

<CPU Performance Indicator>
Can it damage a laptop in the long run to have it on Performance rather than a lower speed like "Ondemand" or "Powersave"? My laptop runs a lot better with "Performance" rather than something else, but I don't want it to suddenly die or get overheated in a couple of weeks or months.

My wireless was connecting fine, but it was impossible to browse with. So, after searching around for a while I found a thread where it said to enter this and reboot.
#echo "net.ipv4.tcp_moderate_rcvbuf=0" >> /etc/sysctl.conf
#echo "net.ipv4.tcp_default_win_scale=0" >> /etc/sysctl.conf
But after entering that and re booting, now I cant even connect to the wireless. It says connecting but times out.

I've been using full disk encryption with luks on two Dell laptops for about 2.5 years. One is 64 bit Fedora (upgraded to 12), another is 32 bit Ubuntu (upgraded to 9.10), both were ext3, until recently.Over time, performance degraded substantially, especially on Fedora, which was put to a heavier use. That laptop has 4 Gb RAM, two 2.5 GHz T9300 CPUs, and 56 Gb of free space.
It was especially unbearable after a reboot. Programs like firefox and thunderbird would take close to a minute to start when ran for the first time after a boot. The login process was painfully slow, and some Gnome applets (e.g. Tomboy notes, keyboard layout switcher) would fail to load on the first login, with an error. I experienced this problem on both laptops with full encryption. I had to log out and relogin to make the applets appear. I tried various boot and mount options and was thinking about switching to ecryptfs (encrypted home).
I also use 3 desktops with no encryption and a netbook with ecryptfs on /home, which all work fine. All are Dell, 2 Ubuntu and 2 Fedora. The Gnome applets problem seems to be due to slowness of the installs with the full disk encryption. The last thing I tried is to migrate ext3 to ext4. I also converted /home, /usr, /opt to extents, following[URL].. That seemed to do the trick. Gnome applets now load fine on both laptops, and startup time is back to tolerable.
Is this a typical experience: ext3 performance degradation with time and a much better performance with full disk encryption once ext3 is migrated to ext4?

Just installed Fedora 14 from the Live CD i686 on my Dell Inspiron 1521. I can't connect to the SpeedTouch 585 on either wireless broadcom card or the wired Ethernet card.
I can connect to it from the same Laptop on the Vista which is on dual boot on the same laptop.
Further confusing is that I ran Fedora 14 and connected to another SpeedTouch today.
Already checked the Channel on the wireless nic and it's on the same one as the SpeedTouch.

wlan0 Authentication capabilities :
WPA
WPA2
CIPHER-TKIP
CIPHER-CCMP
Those are my authentication capabilities, obviously. I am using a WEP encryption for my wireless router and according to this, it will not allow me to connect. Is there anyway to allow that? The wireless card works just fine in Windows, even on the same network encryption type. Using a Intel Wireless/Pro 4965 ag. Note* this is my mother's router and whatnot. She won't change it the encryption type.

I installed a Tenda W322P wireless card in my dual-boot PC running both Windows XP and Ubuntu 11.04. The card worked straight out of the box on XP, but does not function correctly under Ubuntu. My apologies for any missing/irrelevant information, I am having to post this from the Windows boot so the Ubuntu settings are not directly available at the same time as internet access.I followed the process detailed here htURL...to install and configure the driver (I believe from reading other sites that this card is the Ralink RT3062 chipset), blacklisted the original RT2860 driver that was in use (couldn't even get the card to scan for wireless networks with the default driver) and restarted the interface.
Since then, sudo iwlist scan can find my wireless router but when I attempt to connect to it, it seems to enter a loop of requesting the WEP key then pausing for a while before re-requesting the key. I know I have the key value correct because it is copied and pasted from the same text file I used to copy and paste into the passkey field on the Windows boot. Attempting to connect to the router using Ubuntu also has the rather unfortunate side-effect of crashing the wireless router, killing off all other device connections until the router has been reset.

Windows crashed yet again so I thought I'd switch to Ubuntu. Install of 9.10 went flawlessly, everything looked great and worked perfectly. Next day after restart the wireless wouldn't connect. I looked around for solutions and used a wired connection to install wicd and suddenly wireless worked again. But next day after restart wireless wouldn't connect again -
I keep getting a popup asking for my WPA key despite the fact that I know the key is entered correctly. I decided to install 10.04, thinking maybe that would help. It didn't look like wireless was working but after a restart it worked and it worked again after another restart! Fantastic! But today, I'm back to square one. Using Windows again.
TL;DR - Wireless won't connect to the network which it can definitely see - repeatedly presents "Enter WPA key" prompt despite key being correct and wireless working flawlessly under Windows.

If I wanted to step away from the non-free world and constant battles between nvidia and amd, where would I go? I am considering updating my graphics card and would prefer to make the use of open source drivers and not bother with the proprietary ones but I still want a card that's going to be reliable and give good 3d performance to run unity and some 3d games.

I just upgraded to natty last night, and everything is working fine except for the network manager. I can enable and configure the wireless card via bash, but the network manager widget will not manage the wireless card.
When I first boot up, the "Enable wireless" check box is greyed out. After I enable the card via the terminal, the "Enable wireless" check box becomes ungreyed, but every time I click it, it instantly unchecks itself. I feel like Currly from the Three Stoogies. Check, uncheck, Check, uncheck.. "Slaps face repeatedly."

i have an ati radeon x1550 (pretty old, i know) graphics card which worked perfectly under windows 7. i recently read that ati appears to have dropped support for this card installed on recent ubuntu distributions (i'm using ubuntu 10.10 + kde 4.6.1) the thing is, when i'm watching something on videos or playing a movie through vlc, the image looks jittery (random horizontal lines that break the image, it's pretty subtle but it's there...) i'm new to ubuntu (switched from windows 7 a couple of months ago) and what i'm looking for is one of two:
-either a solution to my drivers problem so i can use this card with full 2d and 3d support (like i used to in windows) or, a recommendation of which graphic card i should switch to (my motherboard has a 'pci express x16' slot). i've searched countless forums and sites but i can't reach a final conclusion: am i supposed to have good 2d and 3d acceleration with this card (with the right drivers installed)?
if the answer is 'no', then i'd like to know what i should buy. for what i've read, apparently i should stay away from ati and intel and look for nvidia. i'm not a gamer so i really don't need an incredible 3d acceleration (although some would be nice, just in case) what i really need is for my system to be snappy (i work with my computer) and most of all good support for multimedia apps (i would like to be able to use xbmc smoothly for instance) i'd like to know which is the cheapest graphics card that i can get that will meet my needs (the ones i just listed above)

Is there a 'top' like command for monitoring the GPU and memory usage of a video card? I am most interested in Linux commands, but and OS would be interesting. I strongly suspect that for a group of my systems the video cards are being under-utilized (but I have no idea by how much) and would like to re-allocate funds to other bottle-necks. We are using higher end cards, so the price difference between cards is significant.

I've recently been experimenting with glxgears, but found people saying this is not an ideal benchmark tool as there are many variants; for example resizing the window affects the FPS tremendously.
I'm interested in testing the difference between using the proprietary ATI driver and the open source driver and also the performance under various distributions.
What's the best software to benchmark graphics cards?

I have an ATI RADEON 7000 (taken from lspci) 64 MB graphics card. My computer has a 700 MHz Celeron CPU and 650 MB RAM with Ubuntu 10.04. Anything graphical is slow. I cannot even play basic games like SuperTux. I think it is a graphics driver problem. Will this card ever work well with Linux, what do I need to do?

I want to buy a wifi card that will, hopefully, be rock stable under my kubuntu 10.04 64 bit. Currently I have TP-Link Atheros card and stability in Linux is horrible. Please DO NOT give me links to compatibility list. Just suggest a network card that is most likely to be stable with least manual tuning effort required.

I have installed several different distro's over the last coupled of weeks and have finally as intended come back to 11.4. Last time I installed it my pc was fitted with an older nvidia card and I installed a newer 200 series and got it to work with X11 using the nvidia driver. This time I did the install with the new card in and things haven't gone the same way. I have finished up with the os drivers on my system, nouveau and "swrast (No 3D Acceleration) (7.10)". Performance wise it's way way behind the nvidia driver.
Glxgears for instance runs at under 1/2 the speed even at a lower resolution. I suppose I could still configure to suite my monitor but given that difference in performance would you? I have done what I can easily do with repositories but no signs of nvidia drivers. I can download one as I did last time but from what I have read previously the above drivers may mean that I have to recompile the kernel. A simpler solution might be to re install with my old card in. Can't say I'm too keen on either option. Some distro or the other had a driver helper and installed the nvidia one perfectly.

Moving this to new topic, since it's no longer under wireless connectivity issues. [Noob Warning] I was having trouble getting Ubuntu to recognize my wireless card, as I have changed from the 3965 that came in my computer to the 4965, which added increased range and G band. Anyway, I read one of the threads on here, and this was the advice given:

I'm totally sick of my WiFi Card, a Realtek 8187 connected by miniPCIe, althought internally designed as USB, I've tried all there is, and I've decided to change it. Which brand do you guys recommend? In my experience, I want to avoid Realtek and Atheros, but which brand offer the best "out-of-the-box" experience, and less overall issues? Intel, Broadcomm, maybe another Atheros or Realtek model, or whatever you guys think it's the best choice
