Ubuntu Networking :: Disable 'internet' Connection On Eth0
Oct 15, 2010
I have two connections for my PC, my Ethernet which is on the corporate network and my smart phone on 'usb0'. Both have full internet access.I want to stop my PC from connecting to the internet over the Eth0 while still connecting to internal servers then just have internet over usb0.If I go to the settings of 'Auth Ethernet' in the tray area, under IPv4 there is the routings section - I've tried enabling "use this connection only for resources on its network" but it doesnt work.

I've got access to my LAN and the Internet via my wired ethernet connection. I'd like to share that access with my iPod Touch (device shouldn't really matter) via an Ad-hoc wi-fi network.
This tutorial in the docs seems to describe the right setup but is very out of date (7.04). Instead I found this tutorial and followed it to create the Ad-hoc wireless network. I was able to connect my touch to the resulting ad-hoc network without a problem, but I didn't have LAN/Internet access. What's the next step to get the clients on the ad-hoc network out to the Internet?I found this page in the docs that says I'd need to install dnsmasq-base and uninstalling dnsmasq. I checked and dnsmasq-base is already installed but dnsmasq is not. I do have dnsmasq in /usr/sbin but the package description makes it sound like this should come with dnsmasq. Is the page out of date? Will uninstalling dnsmasq cause other problems?

Running 10.04. For some reason, starting today, I have no internet connection unless I run this command in terminal - sudo dhclient eth0. I have a hard wired ethernet connection on a Desktop PC with a static IP address (there are a number of devices in the house) and it has been running 100% for months and months. Why suddenly do I have to enter this command to get connection? When I switch on I get a connection in that when I click on the Top Panel icon and right click Connection Information it tells me I have an active connection to my router on the normal IP address. I cannot ping the router and Firefox says Server not found. After sudo dhclient eth0 everything works - what has happened since yesterday evening and this morning to stop what has been 100% for months?

I've got a 64 bit home server system that was upgraded from FC2 to 7, 9, now 11. I've now got a weird situation where dns inquiries will not work when I reboot the machine, until i restart eth0. When I reboot, I can open firefox on the machine, put in the IP of my dsl router, and look at it's settings just fine. All other internet uses, whether it's yum, squid, or etc. comes back with the usual name server not found messages. I've got thenetwork setup to use the named on this server, ( the web's a tad bit slower when I set it up to use ISP's windows nameservers, go figure).
Anyway, a few years ago I set up the machine to use the network service to bring theseinterfaces up. (I believe this was because the early versions on Networkmanger had some issues. In an attempt to fix this issue I reset Networkmanger start at startup, and reset up eth0 and 1 to be controlled by it.I then got namserver1=XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX in resolve.conf at reboot..(yeah they were really X's, I'm not hiding an ip here) I tried going intonsswitch.conf, found the line hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dnsand changed it to:hosts:files dns mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return]No joy, I still have to do an ifdown eth0 and an ifup eth0 to get dns to work..

I am running Ubuntu 10.10, and I would like to use my computer to share the internet connection from an ethernet port. For example, I would like to set up my computer as a wireless access point so I can create a network that other computers can connect to for internet.

Is there any way to temporarily "switch off (and back on)" the internet connection on a system (that runs linux)? The following methods are not allowed:Turning off the router. That would lead to a lot of angry young individuals. This method must be particular to my workstation.Use root privileges (coz I do not have them).
Yank the ethernet cable from the system. Why: Sometimes the internet proves to be a distraction.I am using the following system: Fedora release 11 (Leonidas), linux kernel 2.6.30 and GNOME 2.26.3

If I uncheck and recheck "Enable Networking" in the Network Manager Applet 0.7.996 I would expect the wired network to disconnect (which it does) and reconnect (which it does NOT). So I tried sudo ifdown eth0 and got
Quote:
Ignoring unknown interface eth0=eth0.
ifconfig tells me
Quote:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:25:64:e8:18:2c
inet addr:192.168.0.112 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: fe80::225:64ff:fee8:182c/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
[code]....
so I am at a loss. How do I stop and restart the network interface short of rebooting the machine?

I'm getting rather fed up with this Network Manager applet on Ubuntu and its seemingly erratic behavior.I often use my laptop for things like dhcp server to do pxe boot on other machines for netboot installs and other stuff. Often I have to set static address on eth0 etc.I know how to set a static address for eth0 by editing /etc/network/interfaces and all that good stuff, but when I click on the Network Manager applet, it says 'Wired Network - not managed'.I may have deleted it for some reason, but why does it no longer appear, even though eth0 is working?I've also found in the past that changes to interfaces in the Network Manager, such as giving eth0 a static address, do not seem to stick?

I am trying to sort out some issues following an upgrade from F12.
I have eth0 as the connection I want to use. Prior to the upgrade, this connection was enabled and active at boot.
Now, for some reason after the upgrade it has to be manually enabled at every boot - even though when I go the Network tool, Ethernet Device > General tab - "Activate device when computer starts" is checked.
At every boot time it is inactive.
In all the ifcft-eth0 files, the ONBOOT parameter is set to "yes".

I have my ubuntu box hard wired into my network. It all works fine, until I reboot my ubuntu box. After reboot, it can no longer see the network. I have it set up with a static ip. Not sure that I set it up completely correctly but it works fine...when working.. To fix the problem, I enter terminal: ifup eth0 That fixes all know problems until next reboot. What do I need to do so that it will remember settings and automatically be hooked into the network at power up?

My machine has Ubuntu 10.4, installed a week ago. I'm connecting to the Internet with a Wireless 3G modem, the interface is named ppp0. Additionally, I have a network card that is connected to a home router, that's eth0. Everything works fine with eth0 disabled, all my apps can access the internet correctly. But, my issue is that when i enable eth0, i can't access the internet with any app.
So why do i need eth0 anyway? The thing is that i must share my internet connection with my sister, who is also connected to our home router. I planned to give her access by installing squid on this machine and configuring her browser to connect to squid. However, since none of my apps can connect to the internet while eth0 is active (whereas squid and all other apps work fine with eth0 disabled) I can't let her connect to squid while squid is working correctly.BTW selecting "use this connection only for resources on its network" under "routes..." of the ipv4 tab of "Auto Ethernet" made it a little better. Firefox and Xchat started to work with eth0 active. Squid still doesn't work though (althought it works just fine with eth0 disabled)

I am running the latest ubuntu and I am having trouble getting networking sorted. I have 2 networks, one wired (eth0) and one wireless (wlan0). I connect to the internet using wireless. The problem is that I can only successfully connect to the internet if I disconnect from eth0. I have hit this problem with Windows machines and the solution was to adjust the "interface metric" in "Advanced TCP/IP Settings" so that the wireless was the preferred connection. How can I achieve something similar in Ubuntu?

Since I have a new internetaccount, 2 days ago, I have a problem on my server [Fedora Core 8]. I use it as a router.
eth0 is for the internet.
eth1 is for my LAN.
But since my new internetaccount my server uses eth1 for the internet. This is a line from my syslog:
Code:
NetworkManager: <info> Policy set 'System eth1' (eth1) as default for routing and DNS. I killed the NetworkManager daemon and now it works but this must not be the way to do it? Where do I tell my server that I use eth0 for routing and DNS?

Yesterday I did an upgrade and today my box is unable to connect to the internet.
I have tried another cable, it didn't help.
Basically NetworkManager does not connect eth0 to the network, if I try to run ifup from the command line I get:
Code:
I can see in network configuration settings, that the device has been correctly detected and eth0 interface is correctly activated, yet when I try to uncheck the box manage by NetworkManager and start it manually, it tells me that the cable is disconnected... I've tried two different cables, different ports on my router - no help.

I have a question regarding the configuration of Network Connection. My wired connection is fine right now and when I check the network connection applet, it display active information of eth0. However, when I click the Configure button, the Network Connection window appears but there's nothing in the Wired panel. Should there be a eth0 in that panel? I remember I had one before, but after I messed with some configuration of VPN, my network became unstable and I remove the Network Manager to try to solve the problem. Since then, there's nothing in my Network Connection window, though I can still connect to my router with eth0. Now even after I reinstalled the Network Manager, I still don't get anything.
