I just reinstalled OpenSUSE 11.3 GENOME on my computer (Compaq Armada E500 w/512 MB RAM, 30GB HD, and Linksys WPG54v2 wireless card). After futzing around for several hours on two different evenings, I got it working all by myself! The only thing is,ow I have to manually connect to my wireless network every time,which gives me a a great sense of accomplishment. I start the computermber having to edit a script somewhere to make it connect automatically on system startup, but I can't remember what it is I'm supposed to edit or how I'm supposed to edit it

I am using a very reliable VPN connection right now, and would like for it to connect automatically. The checkbox for 'Connect automatically' in editing the VPN connection does not help.

Hi all, a new Linux user and long time Windows user, I have added a dual Boot to my Samsung N220 netbook to dual boot to Windows 7 or Ubuntu Netbook, Very pleased thus far, I had a little trouble getting the wirless network to connect and had to update the drivers via a wired connection.
My issue now is that I have to manually connect to my wirless network each time I use the netbook, I checked the box to automatically connect, but this does not seem to work. If I use the link at the top and select 'Connect to Hidden network' (my SSID is hidden) it will then allow me to select a previous connection and then connects fine, but I thought like Windows it would have connected automatically if a listed network was in range. Any ideas what the problem might be or suggestions to get this working better?

I'm using a Linksys router and have just installed Ubuntu 11.04. I was hoping each team I logged in that it would connect automatically to my router but I always need to manually click on it to connect.
Under Network Connections - wireless it is listed as Auto Linksys but doesn't connect automatically.
Is there a simple way to resolve this? I can't see it.

I've seen other users post this same issue, but can't find anyone who has been able to solve this problem...
I have SSID broadcasts turned off on my wireless router (always a good choice for increased security). Even though I have put a check mark on "Connect Automatically" in my wireless network's configuration under SYSTEM > PREFERENCES > NETWORK CONNECTIONS, it will not connect automatically. I have to click on the network manager icon in the notification area of my desktop, and select "CONNECT TO HIDDEN WIRELESS NETWORK" in order to get online. Network manager does indeed connect automatically to APs that broadcast their SSID. (I don't want to enable SSID broadcasts on my router.)

I'm still new to ubuntu and love it so far but one thing I can't seem to figure out that I use to have in windows is the ability to connect to the closest wireless network available (either one with a stored key or the closest without a password). My house has have two routers and depending where I am in the house one signal can be very week and sometimes lost where another is very strong I'd like ubuntu to connect to the closest one if it's not already connected to one when going to friends/school ect it automatically connects to any network even if it's not stored

Each time I boot up my laptop, I have to manually connect to my wireless network. When I ran Ubuntu virtually from Windows 7, it found the connection automatically. Now I have a dual partition of W7 and Ubuntu and it won't auto connect. How can I make it so?

I have a problem on Ubuntu 11.04 64-bit. The wlan does not connect automatically on reboot, although "Connect automatically" is ticked in network manager. I always have to choose "Connect to hidden wlan", choose my config, enter my password, then connect. Once connected everything works fine. But it's kind of annoying to manually connect each time after a restart.
- hidden SSID from router
- mode -> infrastructure
- connect automatically -> ticked
- available to all users -> ticked
- Encryption -> WPA & WPA2 personal

Well I have a nearby WiFi network that my PC keeps trying to connect to automatically. I don't know why since mine is closer. I tried changing the channel and have deleted the offending network under "Edit Connections" but of course it keeps comming back. The problem is most annoying on boot up when it starts trying to connect automatically as soon as the desktop is loaded. Is there anything Ican do to "hide" this network from my PC's vission?

I configure the wireless connection. It works. I restart, and and doesn't automatically even though it asked my if I wanted to use the profile next boot and I said yes.. How do I get it to save? I tried several times.Maybe there's a terminal command? The computer is for a COMPLETE newb who only wants it to browse web, but they're not going to know how to connect every time even if I explain.

I have ticked the box Connect Automatically in the OpenVPN setup I configured in the gnome network manager but it doesn't connect on startup. It connects perfectly ok if I manually select the VPN but i'd like it work immediately on launch.
I have autologin on Ubuntu but since there is no VPN password to decrypt I don't see why it should be a problem.

I just installed Fedora 13 on my desktop computer and ran into the same problems I did when I tried to install which was i could connect to a network but couldn't access the internet. I decided to install Fedora 14 since I already installed it on my laptop. I'm still running into the same issue, I can connect to my network but cannot connect to the internet using my PCI NIC or onboard NIC. Networking is enabled and I'm getting a IP address from my router. I ran "lspci" and it shows me both network cards which, please correct me if I'm wrong, makes me think that the drivers are installed.
I'm also curious if the VNC client/server could be used through a WAN. I would like to remote into my computer at home when I'm not there and see the gui. I had SSH installed at one point but it was just text. If there is better program please let me know. why I would have Services on my laptop but not on my desktop? Both computers are running the same version. Both cards are enabled and set to connect automatically. I can get a IP with both NICs. I only have one plugged in at a time.

Since that time I moved to Archlinux and I love it. I do however run lubuntu live from a USB for my work PC. I am having a problem with it. I think it's okay to post here because the core of the system is still Ubuntu. I don't think LXDE is the problem. I start up the live environment and it says 'wired connection connected' but I can not load any pages or do anything.
I thought it may be a problem with configuration so I copied down (from Windows) the IP, Subnet, Gateway and DNS. I put them in manually and it doesn't say connected any more and still no connection at all. I am unsure what to do from here. I am not really familiar with Ubuntu enough to try much. I tried to 'dhcpcd eth0' but dhcpcd isn't installed. I guess the default Ubuntu network manager has dhcp enabled automatically.

I have a 5720 Mini PCIE broadband modem card and though it works, it won't connect automatically in a Ubuntu system. Network Manager says it is enabled when I right click on the icon, but when I do a left click it says it is disabled. I have to right click and disable and then enable before my Verizon connection will work.

I just upgraded to Fedora 13 (from 10, using preupgrade), and I've gotten most things working again, but I'm still having trouble with the network.My wired connection (eth0) doesn't connect on boot (even though ONBOOT=yes in /usr/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0).Because of that, I figured I'd just leave eth0 connected manually (with ifup eth0). However, I then found that if I try to connect to a VPN like this, the system reverts to the "stalling every time I try to connect to the internet" problem that I had earlier.

I have servers in remote locations where I have no control over the network routers or firewalls. I need to have a VPN connection to my servers.Is there a way to create a PPTP VPN connection automatically? I don't want to initiate it, I just want it to phone home, and keep phoning home if the connection is dropped.

I am currently trying to upkeep and use my recently deceased fathers ubuntu machines, but as of 6 months ago I had never used Ubuntu or anything like it. I'm not trying to do all that much with it but a few days ago one of the machines lost its ability to connect to the internet, whereas every other machine in the house connects through the router just fine (wireless and ethernet.) I believe i've been able to diagnose part of the problem, the computer cannot connect to a DNS, but I have no idea as how to go about fixing it. My knowledge of Ubuntu is limited to just a few terminal commands. This computer is the one we use to network all of our printers and there are also some critical files on this machine that I need.

I have Ubuntu 9.10 setup on a test box. I am able to connect to my Win XP box shares but I cannot connect to my Win 7 (64 bit) box I get the usual 'Unable to mount location'. I can get to the Win 7 share from my other Win box so it is a valid share. I also cannot connect via the Remote desktop viewer. I am afraid that if I cannot get this going my Ubuntu experiment i over before it started.

I have F14 on a laptop and can't see the laptop screen very well, unless I put my face like right up against the glass, is there a way I can login to my F14 laptop using my windows desktop computer?
whats the easiest way to do that?
I used to use nomachine in previous versions, is that method still used in F14? can't seem to find the FreeNX package anymore.
I used these instructions in previous versions: [URL]
which you'd think would still work in F14, but not sure what happened to FreeNX
otherwise, how do you do it using vncserver? I didn't do it that way in the past because I didn't understand how.
using XFCE window manager in F14 on a windows 7 desktop
Laptop: HP Pavilion dv6-1350us
Desktop: custom build Asus computer using a 23 inch Samsung SyncMaster 226bw LCD display

Here's a strange one. On my internal network, there are two WinBlows boxes, both connected to my Linux Router/Firewall. Yesterday, I needed to download a file from http://www.freebsd.org. The 1st machine I tried, would not connect from FireFox. When I tried, on the 2nd, it connected immediately. So, I did all the usual "stuff" on the 1st one. Re-booted, as it's WinBlows, cleared browser cache, etc. etc. It still wouldn't connect. BTW, connecting to other web sites was no issue. Just FreeBSD.
So, just for grins, I ran a traceroute from both machines, and here's where it gets freaky. Here's the traceroute from the working machine code...

I have a Verizon Droid Eris, an Android phone that has not yet been rooted. Due to the lack of root capabilities the only way to tether my phone is through PDANet for Android. Unfortunately there is no Linux version of PDANet, so the only computer I can tether my phone with is my laptop which is running Vista.
I also have a desktop running Koala, which is ultimately the computer I want to get connected. I'm hoping that there is some way I can use Internet Connection Sharing on the laptop to accomplish my goal, but I haven't had much luck so far. I don't have a crossover cable either so I would prefer to connect the laptop and the desktop via my Belkin F5D7230-4 wireless router.
