I run an Ubuntu Server in a Virtualbox environment. Setup works fine. In virtualbox, I accidentally hit a button that generates and assigns a new mac address for the network adapter. Since then the machine does not bring eth0 up. I tried the following ifconfig eth0 down; ifconfig eth0 hw ether macaddress; ifconfig eth0 up. Then restarted networking.
View 2 RepliesI recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 on an older PC and I'm having problems with the network card built into the motherboard. When I connect an ethernet cable into the ethernet port I get a solid amber light, and I can't connect to my router, (which is being directly connected). Nothing is shown in Network Connections, but on another PC with the same version of Ubuntu it shows "Auto eth0", and it works just fine connecting with the router.How do I fix this? I'm an Ubuntu noob so I'm not really sure what to do here.
The network card is an Intel 82547EI Gigabit LAN controller, and Intel's website offered a driver available for my kernel version of Linux. However I was typing everything it told me to do in terminal, (which half the time I have no clue what I'm typing actually means), but I ended up getting some errors towards the end of the install process. I'm not sure if I messed something up or the driver just isn't going to work.
I'm hoping there is an easier fix for this, I've been searching the net all night trying to find someone with a similar problem and I haven't found any. I think I have another ethernet card which I might pop in and see if that works....but I figure I'll most likely run into the same problem because I know for sure the motherboards network card works - has on Windows, I just can't get it working in Ubuntu.
I would like to change wireless mode on my network card. When i type in iwconfig in terminal so i get abg I would like to have only a mode active. How do i do?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a second network card in my ubuntu desktop that I have sharing my internet connection with a wireless router. I have set the router to a static ip address within the network cards range. But, every time I restart the computer, the network card uses a different ip address. One time it will be 10.42.43.1, the next time it will be 10.42.46.1, ect. This makes me have to hard reset my router every time it does this. How can I set the network card to use the same ip address all the time?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've got two network card interfaces on my computer, one wireless and one wired. The wireless card is connected to the Internet and the wired is connected to the LAN. When only the wireless card is active, Internet works. As soon as i enable the second wired card, Internet stops working. And it seems like Ubuntu chooses the wired card for Internet as soon as it's enabled.
Are there any ways to solve this? So my Ubuntu box always chooses the wireless card for Internet traffic and let me use the wired device for LAN only?
I've noticed that when Linux boots on different machines or with different versions, the network card is assigned to eth0 or to eth1, when there is only one network card. What is the difference and is there any way to tell which one it will be for any machine or version?

The said Network Card works fine with the ADSL Connection in Windows OS, but does not seem to initialise in Linux. When I run "ifconfig" in terminal window it gives away the prompt - "eth0 no such device exists".Although it shoes the loopback adapter (lo) device working fine. I forgot to mention over here, I have just started with Linux. So, I request "the" Linux Gurus to help me out with this one.

I'm using the box as a music server (Twonkey) and want to use the new card (gigabit - eth1) as the default, but seem unable to. I can't switch of the mainboard ethernet option (eth0) in the bios and have tried to change the settings in the ifconfig-eth0 and -eth1 files by changing the hardware addresses as elsewhere recommended, but that doesn't work. During start-up it then gives me an error message that the MAC number was not the expected one. This would indicate that the network options are kept/read elsewhere. I'm not very familiar with Linux/F12. how to make the card the default option instead of the mainboard option.

I'm configuring an HP Mini 110 (wireless BCM4313) to use it as a small Access Point (ad-hoc mode).
I want to make my configuration reboot friendly. With what I have right now, as soon as I reboot the laptop, the wireless interface configuration isn't correctly setup. I have to do "ifdown eth1; ifup eth1" manually.
Here is what I have in /etc/network/interfaces for the wireless interface code...
So the question is how can I avoid having to bring down and up the interface?
When I try to bring up my wi-fi PCI card (ifup wlan0 or ifconfig wlan0 up) my whole PC just hangs until I power it off.
I believe I have the right drivers, but cannot see what I am doing wrong.
I'd really prefer not to go down the ndiswrapper route.

the PC just hangs for ever. No mouse movement, ctrl-alt-del, nothing.
I have downloaded a Linux driver from Realtek but it will not compile. I have the latest kernel-devel, headers, and gcc. I can post compiler errors if anybody would like. They're all apparently to do with missing parameters.
Installed a TP-Link TG-3269 Gigabit card in a machine running OS 11.3 32 bit, when I go into Yast, Network Devices, Network to try configuring the card I get this errormsg: Unable to configure the network card because the kernel device (eth0, wlan0) is not present. This is mostly caused by missing firmware (for wlan devices). See dmesg output for details. Couldn't find any mention of the card in dmesg's output, (though the 8139 onboard card is in there) there is some stuff about pci host bridge but I don't know whether they would be relevant or not
The chip on the card says it's rtl8169sc but lspci lists it as being 00:07.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 8369 (rev 10) Done some googling and there don't seem be any drivers for a Realtek 8639 and it returns no matches from a search on realtek's site, but there is a driver there for rtl8169sc chips, which I downloaded and installed, no errors when installing it Even after a reboot I still get the same error in Yast's Network Settings screen, lspci still lists it as 8369 and the device isn't listed at all if I run ifconfig

I've been fighting with this nearly for three hours, but nothing seems to be working. I have one Gigabit Realtek chip integrated on my Mainboard (which I use for internet connection), and one aditional 100Mbit in PCI slot. So, I basically want to use this 100Mbit for testing purposes, but when I connect something to this 100Mbit NIC adapter, it becomes default and I can not access internet. So, I want to set my eth0 (gigabit integrated adapter) as default adapter.
P.S. I've tried to edit /etc/network/interfaces and iftab, but nothing worked.
I had F14 up and running as a server working awesome. I shut it down and moved it. Now on start up, system doesn't seem to recognize my ethernet card...eth0. How to get my ethernet card back online?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI've been racking my brains over the past few days trying to figure out why my NIC card (network interface card) won't show up in the ifcfg-eth0 file.When I configure a new server (like this one) I always go to:/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and from there I usally see the name of my NIC's manufacturer's name and the hardware MAC address.Then it's only a simple process of entering the server's IP address, netmask and gateway and I'm up and running in no time...But not in this case! the ifcfg-eth0 file is completely blank! There's not ONE single line of config info in it... (?)The server runs an Intel core 2 duo (dual-core) CPU with 1 gig of RAM.
I've even re-formatted the drive and re-installed Centos 5.1 on the darn thing 3 times and it simply won't work.The server cannot resolve when I do a wgetIt also gives me a 'resolution problem in the named configuration'.What I don't understand is that the 2 small LEDs on the Cat 5 cable lights up and flash at what appear to be regular intervals here.
I have two network devices :
1. Intel Corporation 82574L Gigabit Network Conncection (Currently eth0, Mac=00:0e:8c:ab:c6:b1)
2. National Semiconductor Corporation DP83815 (Currently eth1, Mac=00:0e:8c:8a:70:62)
I want to change them so that the "Intel" become eth1 device and the "National" become the eth0 device.
I already tried these steps :
1. I disabled the Network Manager and enabled network
2. Edit the /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules like this

View 9 Replies View RelatedI was browsing the net very well and without any issues for the past 15 days since I installed FC14. Fantastic experience and then suddenly yesterday after nearly 2 hours of a smooth online session I lost internet connectiivity.At that point I noticed that the network icon on top was showing a red cross. After clicking on it I could NOT eth0. I specifically remember seeing it there before.I checked the cables and the setting to no avail and just could not get it back. Any idea what I should be doing to see eth0 in the connection?Also FYI I have been noticing this from day one since I installed FC14----When going through administration-->network-->One cannot see the red and GREEN activate button that I am used to seeing in FC9. In fc14 its greyed out. So I actually had to go and enter the /etc/init.d/network start command to change the status from inactivate to activate.Also the network manager does not seem to be managing eth01 as it does not appear as an entry in its console.
View 1 Replies View RelatedUpgraded To Ubuntu 10.04 The Other Day. And when I first installed it everything worked great except for my sound card which I fixed. But there was no problem with connecting to my Router via an Ethernet cable. Then I updated the video card drivers, restarted my PC and it wouldn't connect. It would try over around 1-2 mins then tell me its disconnected. No green light activity on the router / network card either.
I've reinstalled fresh copies of Ubuntu a couple of times now, Hoping to get the default settings back. But nothing has worked since.
I looked around the net and found quite a few people had this problem on previous versions of Ubuntu but it would seem most of there fixes were for there Version, so it hasn't helped me.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've got access to my LAN and the Internet via my wired ethernet connection. I'd like to share that access with my iPod Touch (device shouldn't really matter) via an Ad-hoc wi-fi network.
This tutorial in the docs seems to describe the right setup but is very out of date (7.04). Instead I found this tutorial and followed it to create the Ad-hoc wireless network. I was able to connect my touch to the resulting ad-hoc network without a problem, but I didn't have LAN/Internet access.What's the next step to get the clients on the ad-hoc network out to the Internet?I found this page in the docs that says I'd need to install dnsmasq-base and uninstalling dnsmasq. I checked and dnsmasq-base is already installed but dnsmasq is not. I do have dnsmasq in /usr/sbin but the package description makes it sound like this should come with dnsmasq. Is the page out of date? Will uninstalling dnsmasq cause other problems?
i have limited experience with Ubuntu and Linux for that matter. i know my way around for the most part but i come from windows. anyway. i have 6 dell gx260 computers. i also have a netgear 8 port Ethernet switch. now im just trying to get the computers to see each other. simple for me in windows. but i have no idea where to start here. it just says connecting to eth0 then network disconnected. and thats it. for now im just working with 2 of the computers. the others are not set up yet. i have been googling for 3 days and got nothing that helps. (my goal after they see each other is to share files back and forth. and also to have one of them control the others with some type of remote desktop. but thats for another day.)
