Ubuntu Multimedia :: X.org Crashes After Update?

I've a ATI HD 4290 video-card and I installed the closed drivers of ATI/AMD. Everything worked fine until I updated Ubuntu. Yesterday, I received an automatic update from the Ubuntu-servers and I accepted this update.
But after I updated everything and restart my computer, X.org won't work. When I start my computer, I get this. (Translated: Your monitor, video card and your input devices couldn't be detected correctly. You have to choose manually the correct settings.)

After recent update (yesterday) Evolution became almost unusable: if I am going to create a new e-mail or just select a person from Contacts or reply to someone it simply crashes. The update also didn't go very smooth - 15 updates were not applied because of a broken dependency - evolution-exchange, which depended on evolution prior to 2.30.0 but 2.30.1.2-2 was to be installed. Is there a way to make Evolution to work or upgrade solving dependencies?

I have a Lenovo T400 and I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04. After the upgrade I am not able anymore to start ubuntu.
I get the Grub boot manager. After that I only see the a black screen and sometimes a few pixels.
I tried already to remove 'quite' and 'splash' in the boot options. And I added 'nomodset' and 'fb=false'.

Since I have updated last night from maverick to the latest beta of natty narwal, I'm having a lot of trouble getting Nautilus (desktop included) to work.
It seems to crash since the very start as when I turn off the computer, the message of "force exit" appears.

My Eclipse crashes after some updates on 11.3

My system is a Gigabyte GA-P35-DQ6 with Radeon 5770. The system was rock solid and everything working fine until the latest update I applied 30 minutes ago. The system is stuck on the little circle icon before the login screen.
I'm not able to ssh or telnet to the machine to check the log files. I edited my grub.conf a while back and I don't seem to be able to call up the recovery kernel. I can read up on the grub options.

I'm running Slackware64-current. Since the upgrade of last Monday I'm experiencing several crashes of the X-server. It begins with an issue that one Window, e.g. Konsole or Firefox don't become active when clicking them. After some seconds the screen becomes dark and I end up on the console. First error I saw was from akonadi. Deinstalling akonadi didn't change anything. But there is an errormessage about a segmentation-fault in the Xorg.0.log. I'll append the logfile to this post. I recently upgraded to -current from 13.0 on my Dell Inspiron 1525 Laptop. It seems to have strange problems since then. The X crashes after sometime if I am running a video in firefox (flash based, say .....) in the full-screen mode. When I am not in the full-screen, it seems to run just fine. A similar thread was posted a few days back (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...rashes-846796/) and I thought I had overcome the problem using one of the suggestions provided, but apparently, I just had not run full-screen videos ever since (and I thought it was solved!). code...
I should mention that, the crash happened when I was running a video chat on gmail in full-screen mode too. I have the Xorg.0.log for that too, if it is going to be helpful. Also, one thing I noticed was that even Ctrl+Alt+b_space does not work when this crash happens!! (so, I have to go ahead and reboot the system using the power button everytime) This I find very strange, since if at all, I should have been able to kill the process and restart X.
This seems to be an extraordinarily long thread, but I have put in whatever I thought could be useful info I should give. I will appreciate any help in resolving this issue.

I loaded the Pre-Release version of Ubuntu 10.10.1 32 bit workstation. It ran mostly fine for about a 2 months. Then I did an online update and it told me that I had to reboot. When I did, I booted to a splash screen and then a dead machine with a black screen where control-alt-delete does nothing, no disk activity, no mouse, no keyboard, totally dead. Had to hit reset button. I booted to a suse partition and hacked the grub entry to remove the splash and silent to get more spew at boot time. The last thing before the screen goes black is starting NBD client. I have my email and various directories on my central server so I need NFS. Is there a way I can hack my way to get it to boot even without NFS temporarily to possibly rebuild the nbd kernel module? I have looked at the /var/log/ syslog, daemon, debug, kern messages and gdm log files and don't see any indication of why it crashed. Where else can I look?

I was using Fedora 9 until about 1 month ago when my hard drive crashed. I installed F12 on a new hard drive last week. Due to some other software issues (empathy), I decided I should try to get the latest updates. PackageKit kept giving errors and would not update. So, I researched and found that I needed to run " su -c 'yum update' " for the first update then PackageKit would work. I did this and after about an hour of updating, the screen went black. Nothing you can do at that point but hard reboot.
When I did that, I could only get a "GRUB" command line. I played with it for a minute but really I have no idea what to do with GRUB cmd (beyond my experience level). So I decided to wipe it out and reinstall F12. I did that, and was just working thru the updates again. Same thing happened, went to black screen. I have not rebooted it yet, but Im sure when I do, it will be GRUB again. What in the world am I supposed to do with this? I am not a Linux star, but I have been using it for around 8 years now with various distros, so I would say I have at least moderate experience.

I've just installed Squeeze 6.01a from the xfce iso image on an old PIII which has been running Lenny with xfce without any problems. It's a fresh install after a reformat.
Sounds and multimedia apps like gxine and mplayer all worked fine on Lenny and other older versions. Now they don't - not gxine, not mplayer not even VLC. Run from the menu they all abort - and if run in an xterm they all crash with the following message -
Assertion 'pthread_mutex_unlock(&m->mutex) == 0' failed at pulsecore/mutex-posix.c:108, function pa_mutex_unlock(). Aborting.

When attempting to run pSX on Ubuntu 9.04 (and the 9.10 livecd), it crashes with a segfault. I -have- read [URL] and tried shutting down pulseaudio as recommended there. However:

I am trying to convert movies to mpeg4 or more specifically formatted to play on my blackberry curve. I followed installation guide from this tutorial [URL]. Everything installed and the program works but when I add a file and pick presets and hit convert the terminal pops up and says the following:

So I press Enter and the terminal closes, than... nothing happens just staring at the winff screen.
I really have no idea where to go with this. I found a link from the forums earlier on these common crashes but cant seem to find it again.

Whenever I open Rhythmbox, it looks like it is about to work, but crashes. I get this when I run it from the command line.

When I try to play anything in banshee it crashes with the error:

Same thing happens with Listen and Rhythmbox, but with a segmentation fault.
Amarok doesn't even get past the splash screen, but that's more or less okay because I'd rather stick with gnome.
Guayadeque is the only decent music player that works, and even it isn't without its issues. Audacious also works, but I don't like Audacious(the whole "one big playlist" system... ew).
Of course if I had my way I'd skip gnome music players entirely and go with foobar2000, but wouldn't you know it, that doesn't work either. [URL]
I'm using 10.04 beta, but these problems were present on 9.10 too.

I've been running into issues with VLC crashing now and again, particularly when seeking through the current item using the bar (as opposed to Ctrl-Right Arrow/Left Arrow); it may have happened in a few other spots, but that's usually when I'm not at my keyboard. All files are stored locally on my HD, mostly .avi video. For the most part, when I'm using VLC, I've got Firefox and maybe a Nautilus window running as well. CPU use, Memory use, and System load stay pretty well down (and I've never managed to get my swap usage above 120MiB of the 1.2GiB on the Swap partition).
I've tried removing and reinstalling VLC, no dice; about screen lists Ver 1.0.2 Goldeneye. A side effect of this is that, until I restart the system, the screen is unable to be put to sleep at it's timeout; in the notification bar of the top panel, an icon appears and (if the mouse is left there) a little box will appear with text as follows:
Session active, not inhibited, screen idle.
If you can see this text, your display server is broken and you should notify your distributor.

The URL there listed doesn't have any information that seems to be useful, but, I'd presume that VLC does something to prevent the screen turning off while it's playing (a situation where most folks aren't going to be typing or mousing around), which is undone when VLC ends cleanly (and re-opening, then exiting doesn't fix it).

I use Ubuntu 10.04 but I had this problem in 9.10 too.
I have a problem regarding my sound preferences. I have a microphone and I want to use it to make calls. The problem is that when I speak into the microphone when a program like Skype is used, my sound suddenly crashes(The microphone won't take any input nor will I hear any sound from the speakers if I play a video or music. This gets fixed if I restart the computer). This also happens if I go to Sound preferences → Input or Output and edit something there.
If I don't make any of the above, the sound works just fine as I can listen to music and play videos.
I don't know much about computer hardware but here is some info about my sound card:

Shotwell keeps on crashing when importing either from a folder or my iPhone. I am using it on an S10 netbook. I tried several versions but keeps on getting the same problem. I am thinking of cleaning everything from Shotwell and reinstall. I am running Ubuntu on an iMac via vbox (with less resource) and do not get the problem.
I tried searching but have not gotten any solid answer to resolve it.

Basically I'm running Rosegarden, fire up qsynth, load a soundfont and when it's restarting the fluidsynth engine it just hangs and does nothing. Has anyone run into this before? It's really quite irritating because as far as I know it's the only free synth with support for soundfonts.

I am having some trouble with RhythmBoxt runs fine until I install the package (Synaptics) Rhythmbox plugins 0.12.8-0. After I install this package and then open RhythmBox, the applications opens for a few seconds and then closes (terminates). I get a segmentation fault.I tried reinstalling but this does not help. From previous posts, others were also obtaining segmentation faults, others had success with uninstalling the rhythmbox-ubuntuone-music-store package. I do not have this installed on my system. My problem is related with the plugins package.If I run rhythmbox from the command line in sudo mode it starts without crashing but with a warning:Rhythmbox-WARNING **: Unable to grab media player keys: Could not get owner of name 'org.gnome.SettingsDaemon': no such name But when I select one of the plugin sources it then terminates and closes down

Since 10.04, dvdrip will not finish ripping without crashing on multi episode disk. Reopened dvdrip to copy log files (below) and only part of log remains, but now transcode is available where before it was not. This dvd has 22 chaptors and it crashed at the end of 21. 22 came up on the progress bar but just stalled there.

Sound... Ok, system sounds is working. Amarok is working. But it doesn't work in VLC, flash, etc. GNOME: works, but only starts working, when sound is changed.
(No idea, but KCMInit always crashes at start (segm fault)).
What I supposed to do?
