Ubuntu Multimedia :: Microsoft Core Fonts Not Working?
May 3, 2010
when I go to software center, it shows the ms core fonts but there is no install button. I have loaded the restricted extras and medibuntu repos. not sure why it is not working. ubuntu version 10.04 btw.
I tried looking for it in the Software Center but it doesnt have the install button. It used to work just smoothly in the previous versions of ubuntu. Do i need to download anything before installing it? I need it for compatibility with MS Office
I've read a number of posts [URL].. that state that the Microsoft fonts, formerly msttcorefonts, but now (supposedly) called ttf-mscorefonts-installer should be available in Synaptic Package Manager.
Neither is present in mine- I am running Lucid Lynx 10.04 and I have both font multiverse and universe enabled; althoguh, the wiki link says I should see hundreds, but I only see about 30 total in all 3 font repositories. So I then tried apt-get tff-mscorefonts-installer and I got the following error: E: Invalid operation ttf-mscorefonts-installer
What gives? Is this package no longer available? Should I be looking in some repository other than Font?
i just bought a ASROCK core 100ht and installed ubuntu 10.04.
My speakers and headphone works fine but my microphone is not working, a common problem. Usually i solve it through alsamixer. However my Alsamixer shows only " Master PCM S/PDIF Capture " (see pic)! And no microphone option. Does anyone knows what is going on?
I recently read in a forum that by default the Linux kernel only activates one of two cores in a dual core processor. Searching online gave one option to find out and that was the mpstat command. I therefore ran the command and got the following output. As the result says, it shows only 1 cpu. I was wondering what I could do to activate both cores in my machine, and whether doing so was going to cause me any problems.
After having fixed the video on my webcam to use it with Skype I want to use the microphone as well...
Skype offers two microphones that seem to be related to the USB webcam. I have tried both of them and with different settings in kmix where I see a tab called "usb camera" with a microphone slider and a tick box. There is also an option to use "audio gain control". no success with all possible combinations.
Then I tried to use the microphone with a small software called "flrec", no success either.
i have installed Ubuntu LTS 10.04. I have some type1 hindi fonts like Avanti, Mitra etc which i am using on my windows computers very well. Now i am start trying to install these fonts on Ubuntu by copying the .pfb files to /usr/share/fonts/type1/gsfonts/. Now when i check in any text editor fonts are showing but when i open any existing file containing matter of this fonts its not in proper hindi and i am also not able to write with these fonts. Whereas when i am trying to install some ttf hindi fonts these working fine.
I have just installed 9.10 64bit Karmic Koala on a Sony VAIO VGN-NR110E. Everything seems to be working fine out of the box...
I have my camera WORKING. I have tested it through VLC and the video is visible. I have installed Skype, and after setting up the source of the mic and video, SOUND works. Microphone from NX-6000 records sound, I can talk to someone on Skype with no problems.
The only issue i have is that in Skype settings, when I click on the TEST button in the VIDEO menu, the camera blinks, but the screen stays black. When I initiate a conversation, and enable my video, all I see is a white box in the corner, and the same thing shows up on the screen of the person I am speaking with. The sound however works flawlessly.
I have installed Ubuntu server 10.10 on my new computer which uses AMD Phenom II X6 1090T. But I have noticed that my CPU cores were not able to run at 3.6GHz at any time, even when I only have one CPU-intensive computing job. They are either at 3.2 GHz or 800 MHz, like this
Code:
$ cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep -i "cpu Mhz" cpu MHz: 800.000 cpu MHz: 3200.000 cpu MHz: 3200.000
[code]....
My maximum CPU frequency seems to be locked at 3.2 Ghz:
I can hear my echo in the headphone from the microphone. It is annoying when I make VoIP calls using the headset because I can hear my own breathing all the time
I've seen several posts about adjusting the brightness on webcams within Ubuntu going through /sys/module/... /parameters/ however, I need directions for the Microsoft LifeCam Cinema specifically. It runs well with Skype but during the day the image is way too bright so I look like a ghost on cam. I'm running with UBUNTU 10.04 LTS *Lucid Lynx* on a DELL D620 laptop.
I wish to play a training video. When I click on the link I get a prompt to open with RealPlayer. Since I do not think I have RealPlayer installed I checked the link and it an .asx file. I guess it is a link for streaming the video. Whatever, which playing software should I install? I am aware of the multimedia tutorial on this site but am not clear on my objective as there are so many player options apparently available. It would help if I knew what I should be using to play these videos.
i am running gigabyte GA-M68M-S2P and AMD sempron 2.7. the problem is when i try to run dual core. it will boot and run for 2mins then it crashes. single core runs perfect.
I have a PC with Fedora Core 5, and only command line available for this PC. I try to use the ALSA sample program to playback a simple sine wave, and I can't get any sound from the audio out. I suspect that the sound card is set as mute. My question is how to unmute the sound card, which is integrated with the VIA82xx mother board. The following is some of the info about the PC and sound card.
I would like to use the Adobe Garamond Pro in my text doccument in open office writer. I got a text document where from a friend where it is used so I know that it can. But when I want to edit I cant find it in the fonts dropdown menu.
I have a folder with over 1500 fonts, I would like to move them to my /usr/share/fonts folder so that they can be used. Some are from Windows, some are just random extras. I've installed the msttcorefonts, but there are quite a few missing that make some wen pages look different.
How can I go about putting the fonts from my folder, into the appropriate /usr/share/fonts folder to be used? And how can I move them all? I can't drag and drop them, and mv FONT_NAME /usr/share/fonts for all of them will take a month or two. Is there a way to elevate my self to be able to just drag and drop them all? And which folder would they need to go into for them to be used in Chrome and Firefox?
Booting up this morning, no problem. But I accidentally let my laptop go into suspend mode, which doesn't work, so I had to force a restart (Suspend mode on my laptop won't allow me to wake it up again). Now, on rebooting, X doesn't work. I usually boot to RL3 then use startx. Now it just flashes the screen then gives me this error -
Code: (EE) Error compiling keymap (server-0) (EE) XKB: Couldn't compile keymap XKB: Failed to compile keymap Keyboard initialization failed. This could be a missing or incorrect setup of xkeyboard-config. Fatal server error: Failed to activate core devices ..... Fatal server error: Failed to activate core devices.
Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support at [URL] for help. Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information. If I su - to root and then do "init 4", I get to xdm, and I can log in. X then starts, but with no sound, wrong keymaps, launchers not working; all sorts of things wrong. If I startx as root I get a normal desktop. I have tried copying root's xinitrc to /home/spoovy, but makes no difference.
My goal is when test should be drawn using mono, sans serif family fonts, Korean font should be picked up.I have added below entry in fonts.conf and the font is also installed under fonts directory.
Using FC_DEBUG flag, I checked that score for this font is not coming the "Best Score".I am not sure what the problem is, If I expect fontconfig to just replace sans with my font, it should take that.
I've got a Lenovo T410 with just the onboard intel graphics, with the i7 620m and 10.04 64-bit installed.I've also added the xorg-edgers ppa and installed all the packages from there. When I try to watch a 720p video full-screen in ..... it is unwatchable, just too choppy. I haven't been able to find an answer to this elsewhere. I've tried disabling the hardware acceleration in flash but that does nothing. It seems that the driver in use is i915. Is that the driver that should be used? I have a command line OCR program called OCR Shop XTR (Vividata corp) that I am using on a system with a 6-core AMD chip. I changed the bios so that the 6-cores were activated, but htop shows me that while the program is running, I am only getting activity on one core (the program maxes out the one core with consistent usage between 97% and 100%).
I have read that many programs are not written to take advantage of multiple core cpu's. However, I am just hoping that there is some way to get this program to take advantage of the extra cores. Does anyone know of a way to invoke programs from the command line which would spread the workload out among additional cores?

I have now installed Wheezy on two different hard drives and in each case it seems only one CPU of my dual core CPU computer is recognized. System Monitor, Gkrellm and lscpu show just one when prior to the new install the old Wheezy showed both CPU's. I have put the hard drive into two other computers with dual core CPU's and all show just one CPU.
Interestingly System Profiler and Benchmark (hardinfo?) > Devices > Processors now show a large amount of processor infomation when with the old Wheezy I would only see both CPU's listed and nothing else.
Assume someone bind a particular process to a particular CPU core(In multi core machine) by using sched_setaffinity() like functions. Then how we can get that process running core id and CPU core utilisation of that process on that running CPU core(Pragmatically or by a Linux command)?.
