So trying to use skype. all is going well, except when I speak or even as soon as the female voice from the testing service comes on, the input volume automatically starts dropping. this is an issue, as my voice sounds quieter and quieter as the call progresses. Any thoughts or how I may lock it at a higher input volume?

Ubuntu Networking :: WiFi Dropping And Dropping Speed

Feb 25, 2010

As soon as i'm starting to copy a large file enough file (>700Mb) to my ubuntu box (connected to an Asus router via wifi) from a Windows 7 client (connected to router via ethernet cable) i get a dramatic drop in speed. upload starts at 1,0Mb/sec with a ping to ubuntu box at <1ms, and in 2 minutes it drops to 200kb/sec with a ping of over 1000ms! The ping increases with every second in a linear progression.

To exlude router as a possible problem copying to a windows 7 notebook connected to router via wifi results in an average of 2,7Mb/sec with an average ping of 150ms.

OS: Ubuntu Server 9.10 + desktop installed

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Dropping Streaming Audio In All Players?

I guess it's having a problem with "resume" function or buffering.Any thoughts on this? I'm not having that problem with VLC in XP on the same connection.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Works At First But Keeps Dropping Connection

May 16, 2010

I've installed Lucid Lynx in both kubuntu and xubuntu variants, and experienced the same problem, (Note I'm also still running 9,04,on the same computer, trouble free). With 10.04, the problem is that sound playback software works initially, but drops the connection with the sound driver randomly, at times varying from a few seconds to a couple of minutes. It seems to happen regardless of whether Alsa or PulseAudio is set as default. This happens with Movie Player, VLC, Audacity, and with Flash in Firefox - they all appear to start normally, with sound, but soon fail. (Again, I don't have this problem with earlier releases, using the same computer) I know little about sound configuration.

OpenSUSE :: Move Transparently Between Run Level 3 And Run Level 5 As Autologin User?

Aug 10, 2010

I've been able to kludge a kill script which finds the correct pid for the kdeserver (or gnome server) after my system comes up in run level 5 so I can drop back to run level 3 mode. Lots of experimentation showed me that using telinit 3 and telinit 5 would occasionally leave the video memory in a mess and I would have the black screen of death.

I set the security parameter setting to autologin for me since I am the only user of my machine, but I still have to kludge the default setting under sysconfig (the DEFAULT_WM) under Window Manager to pick a certain window manager, so it takes time to manually switch the desktop.

Right now I can leave the gui and drop back to cli, but painful experimenting showed me that killing the X server is a no no. Right now I kill the kde server, which sends the SIGTERM to the X windows manager, which then figures out that it has to shut down.

Questions: Is there a better way of doing this? Apparently openSUSE figures that we have multiple users logging into the gui desktop, so the gui is always kept running and a login window with the desktop manager option forces the user to login in. With autologin, this never happens, but no choice of desktop is possible on the fly.

Can some type of script be set up to painlessly enable this to happen? And what is the best way of bringing either the Gnome or KDE desktop manager down gracefully? I do get lots of error messages as the system attempts to recover and X shuts down. It appears that apparently the single user with autologin is left out in the cold.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: USB Mic Very Low Sound Level

Jan 9, 2011

Ubuntu 10.4 recognized a Samson C01U usb microphone when plugged in the very first time and the mic could be selected in Sound Preferences on the Input tab.gnome-alsamixer also showed the device from the beginning with a single volume control. After many hours of work backports-modules were removed and alsa-driver-modules reinstalled. There is now, finally, at least a signal that Applications|Sound & Video|Sound Recorder can record. The recording is very faint, but its there, along with an industrial amount of noise.

alsamixer gives 2 warnings about 'no idea what to do with line-in mode and Mic-in mode'. Forum posts have alerted there can be problems if both of these are on at the same time. One or the other should be muted to avoid a conflict. Muting line-in or Mic-in has no effect on the error messages. Maybe these warnings are unrelated to the core issue and can be ignored? The machine here is a desktop with 2 soundcards and playback works without any problem. Both JACK and Ardour seem to be working fine. Just no recording capability thru the USB Mic.Can someone shed some light on the signal strength issue and what may be needed to get the mic to work.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sounds Always Starts At Maximum Volume - Set It To Initialize To Specific Level?

Jan 8, 2011

I have an Echo Mia soundcard that I had working in Ubuntu 9.04 fine but just upgraded today to 10.04. I got the card working fine with the Medibuntu respository Alsa Firmware. However, every time I boot up the volume is insanely loud (I use studio monitors with a set volume). As soon as I click to change the volume it suddenly kicks in down to the correctly set volume but I need it to not boot at max. I remember I had to do something in 9.04 to resolve this and had the Echo Mixer in the panel as a launcher but I can't remember what I did to get it to initialize the volume correctly. I've tried everything I could think of to no avail.

Anyone have any ideas? Even if I could just use a script to set the volume to initialize to a specific level I'd be fine with raising it after.

Is there a simpler lower level way of achieving this without having to install and modify an existing cursor theme. I installed x11-apps just to get xcursorgen... though idk if this has been an essential step or not. Anyway, I have run it on my arrow.png/arrow.cursor to create a "default" cursor file... though am lost as to where to go from there. I have no idea where the existing default cursor is located, though i suspect it's a font cursor not a icon cursor...

Debian Multimedia :: Intel HD Audio - Headphones/Speakers Level ?

Mar 20, 2011

This is a Lenovo L512 laptop with Intel HD Audio (Realtek ALC269 / Intel G45 DEVIBX) which was recently upgraded to Squeeze. I've been having trouble using the headphones on this machine, as the speakers continued to play while the headphones were connected. I normally use KDE, and the available mixer only offers one channel. I thought I might be able to manually silence the speakers by using the command line tool alsamixer. Unfortunately, alsamixer has a channel for the headphones, but it doesn't do anything, only master volume is controllable. By luck I decided to play around with Gnome today and to my great surprise, System -> Preferences -> Sound offers complete control over all functions of the audio hardware. Does anyone know how I could get these features working under KDE?

Fedora :: Can't Switch To TTY Or Run Level 3 From Run Level 5

May 12, 2009

Hi Guys,
here is my scenario:

I am running F10 x86_64 with Nvidia Quadro FX 3400.
I installed the drivers and it worked just fine. No errors generated according to Nvidia log files.
However, while in run level 5 when I try to switch to run level 3 by typing "telinit 3" or "init 3" the X server goes down and I get a blank screen. Same thing happens when I try to switch to a different tty session by <ctrl>+<alt>+F2 (or any F key for that matter).
I also noticed that when I shut down my system I can't see any more the screen where services are shutting down and their status ([OK] or [failed]).

Would appreciate your help on solving this issue.

Ubuntu :: Alsamixer Startup "speaker" Level (and Screen Brightness Startup Level)

May 23, 2010

I just upgraded to the 10.04 and everything works just fine as before (except for skype but that really doesn't matters as it has already been 3 years I'm using ubuntu and I managed to get it to work only once, for miracle I believe ^^). The only real issue I have is this: when I start up my laptop, after the log-in, no sound will be heared as the "speaker" volume level in alsamixer is set to 0; if I raise it from the terminal running alsamixer (as I don't know any other alternative) everything plays just fine, but the next time I boot I do have to do it all over again... So, how can I change the default startup level of the "speaker" in alsamixer?

PS: by the way I do have the very same issue with the screen luminosity but the other way round as is always starts at maximum brightness and I can't manage to get it to start at the minimum, as it did before. At least reducing the backlight if far more quick but a couple of times I forget it and the battery lasted something like half an hour

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Very Little Control Over Volume Using Master Volume Level?

Apr 10, 2011

My volume control seems to have only three settings: TOO LOUD, VERY QUIET, OFF. If I adjust the Master volume slider from the Panel, only about the right 1/8th has any effect and if I slide it past about the 95% mark, I get no sound at all. At the far-right end of the volume control, I get total volume. It's basically like the slider only has any impact in the top 5% of it's space. Below 95% of the slide, there is zero volume.

It's so drastic, that one tap down of the volume button on my keyboard kills the sound (because it nudges the slider past that 95% mark). This happens in the Audio settings, etc., system-wide. If I adjust the volume for an individual app from within the app (MPlayer, for example) it behaves exactly as expected (that is, app volume works smoothly, it's just master volume that has this issue). I have run through most of the "obvious" things-- I'm wondering if I broke something by installing the extra KDE packages to get Amarok to work.

Some times it boots up normally without going into the login screen at all. The only thing that is different is one of the 5 year old kids I let use the computer for the internet & the computer doesn't always get shut down right(turn the power off). I suspect that has caused the problem but it happens now even when I know its been shut down right.

Ubuntu Networking :: Network Connections Keep Dropping?

Jan 30, 2010

Here is the layout of my network:My cable modem plugs into eth0 on my ubuntu server which acts as a firewall (shorewall) and dhcp server to my lan. A dd-wrt access point is plugged into eth1 and then a bridge connecting my xbox360 and another bridge connecting a desktop computer.Everything works pretty well, except a few times a day, my network will just shut down. The wireless on my macbook and my wife's laptop will just shut down, and if my xbox is running, it will lose connectivity. It will be down for maybe a minute or two, and then come back up like nothing ever happened.I never had this problem when I had just a dd-wrt router running everything instead of my server. When I ssh into my server afterwards and run dmesg, this is what I will get:

Code:
