I've installed Samba on my Home Theater PC but none of my other computers can stay connected to it. Sometimes it drops connections right away, other times it takes several minutes.either way, a pc will never stay connected longer than 20 minutes.

Here is the layout of my network:My cable modem plugs into eth0 on my ubuntu server which acts as a firewall (shorewall) and dhcp server to my lan. A dd-wrt access point is plugged into eth1 and then a bridge connecting my xbox360 and another bridge connecting a desktop computer.Everything works pretty well, except a few times a day, my network will just shut down. The wireless on my macbook and my wife's laptop will just shut down, and if my xbox is running, it will lose connectivity. It will be down for maybe a minute or two, and then come back up like nothing ever happened.I never had this problem when I had just a dd-wrt router running everything instead of my server.When I ssh into my server afterwards and run dmesg, this is what I will get:

I was having trouble with my wireless connection, it was dropping every 5 minutes or so after upgrading to 10.04 and ran across a thread where someone recommended entering

After entering the command I have lost all ability to even use my wireless ability even if it was for 5 minutes. Now I am using a different kernel, internet still drops every 5 minutes, but would love to get my internet up and running again.

Our school has a small 3-computer lab in the preschool department where the kids come in and simply use Firefox to access some educational websites. Due to logistics in the building they're in we had to go with a wireless solution in the following setup:
- Apple Airport Extreme WAP
- 3 HP DX2200 desktops running Ubuntu 10.10
- 3 Trendnet TEW-664UB USB wifi chips
All was running great until we got the computers installed on site and now they are constantly dropping the wifi connection if they are even able to connect at all (which is highly hit or miss).
10.10 picked up the USB wifi card as soon as we plugged them in and showed the available networks, but actually obtaining and keeping connections is a nightmare at the point. The computers are in very close proximity to each other (only about 2-3 feet between computers) and the WAP is in the next room (other computers and mobile devices are able to connect to the WAP with full signal from the same room/location). Thats about all the detail I have off the top of my head, could this be an interference issue with the wifi cards or does this sound like an Ubunutu issue? Again we have had multiple other devices in that room all able to connect seamlessly.
I did a clean install of OpenSuse 11.3 a couple of weekends back. Everything is working great except the SSH server.Once I installed ssh, it appears to accept my connection, allows me to log in, and then freezes Putty, not allowing me to type anything into the terminal.If I wait several minutes, I'll get a message saying that the connection was closed. After that, the server won't accept connections.Sometimes it'll start accepting connections again, but after a while, the connection will close on its own. Other times, I will be unable to get a connection until I restart the server.If you guys needs any more information, please let me know. What could be causing this odd behavior?
View 3 Replies View RelatedAfter doing a clean base install of CentOS 5.3 on a test server, I started having problems with network disconnects. While SSH into the box, I would be intermittently disconnected from the SSH session. At first I thought it was my workstation, but after running ping tests from multiple machines on the network to the test box, it became apparent that the test box was dropping packets. When I lose my SSH connection, the pings also start timing out, for a few seconds, then start again. I increased the console logging and I can see when the ethernet port goes up and down when I physically disconnect the cable, but it does not go down or lose link when the disconnects occur. I changed the NIC ports being used and had the same result. I tried with a different switch with same result. I reinstalled CentOS 5.2 and the problem went away.
Upon further investigation, I found that CentOS 5.2 is using the e1000 driver for my NICs and CentOS 5.3 is using the e1000e driver. I resinstalled CentOS 5.3, and tried using the e1000 driver instead of the e1000e but it no longer detects my NIC's... apparently they moved the support from e1000 to e1000e. I have spent the last 3 days googleing for info on this problem and have not found a solution. Any recommendations? Should I submit a bug report?

I had CentOS 5.2 Upgraded to 5.3 -- when will I learn to test more. Anyway, same everything and samba won't stay up. I'm constantly doing service smb restart and then a few seconds later the shares are gone and I have to run smb restart again.
View 3 Replies View RelatedAs soon as i'm starting to copy a large file enough file (>700Mb) to my ubuntu box (connected to an Asus router via wifi) from a Windows 7 client (connected to router via ethernet cable) i get a dramatic drop in speed. upload starts at 1,0Mb/sec with a ping to ubuntu box at <1ms, and in 2 minutes it drops to 200kb/sec with a ping of over 1000ms! The ping increases with every second in a linear progression.
To exlude router as a possible problem copying to a windows 7 notebook connected to router via wifi results in an average of 2,7Mb/sec with an average ping of 150ms.

Connections: eth0 (the first internal NIC) is part of a private network of 4 servers connected to a Gb switch. this connections serves as a fast link among these servers to regularly transfer (backup) large quantities of data. Only I can utilise it from within the server room (among those servers, obviously).
eth0: 192.168.0.AA1 eth4 is the Intel add-on NIC with 1 GB fibre connections to the public network of our institution. This is the link/IP my WIN clints have to use to access their shares. eth4: 134.XXX.YYY.ZZ1
My Problem: Despite having including both interfaces in my smb.conf only the internal connection via eth0 lives up to my expectation and delivers up to 50 MB/s. All clients trying to connect via eth4 will be able to see and access the shares, but file transfers commence with speeds severely below 0,5 MB/s with lots of aborts and warnings from the WIN file explorer.
So I experimented with the setting "interfaces" in the global section of smb.conf --- to no avail. I even set samba only to eth4: same problem. Only way to get flawless & fast transfers is the way through eth0. The samba log files of the clients I tried do show some errors, but I fear I am unable to interpret them properly.

have a problem with my network-manager in ubuntu 10.10.when I dial one of my vpn connections, my other vpn connections be disabled and I can't use them!I tried to restart network-manager and gnome-panel, but it does't seem to solve this problem.

View 2 Replies View RelatedLately about half the time I boot up on 9.10 it stays at the tty & asks for my login & password. It will just stay there for about a minute or so & thenboot up normally whether I enter anything or not. I have it set for auto-login & it never was a problem before. Some times it boots up normally without going into the login screen at all. The only thing that is different is one of the 5 year old kids I let use the computer for the internet & the computer doesn't always get shut down right(turn the power off). I suspect that has caused the problem but it happens now even when I know its been shut down right.

wireless connects perfectly, but after roughly 30 seconds, i cant access any address or ping an url or ip. however network manager says im still connected. so i click on network manager, and click on the wireless connection, it then reconnects in a couple of seconds, and all is good again. i carry on browsing, and 30 seconds later the same happens again!!!
my wireless signal is fairly week, however connection works everytime and in xp this is not an issue.
I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 64 bit on an Asus laptop and the wireless connection disconnects randomly for a while and keeps searching for the signal. When it finds it I have to put in my WEP key again to get it to connect sometimes only once or sometimes 2 or 3 times. This is getting quite annoying.
View 9 Replies View RelatedThis is weird. I will be working on the internet with several tabs open and all of a sudden the pages won't update. I can't go anywhere - it's like I lost the connection. I am also downloading bittorrents with uTorrent running with WIne and that doesn't seem to be affected. I also have gPodder and I tried to update podcasts with that and it also hangs up as if it can't connect. The only way I have been able to solve this has been to reboot (which I just did).

I have DSL and had a Westell router/modem combo and my wireless would stay up for no more than 15 mins at a time even while idle, and in order to get wireless back I have to reboot and then I can get another 5-15 mins of wireless before it drops. When it drops it prompts me for my wep key and wont accept it yet if I reboot it catches the wireless right away for a very short period. So I go out today and spend over $100 bucks on a Netgear dgn2000 thinking it would fix the problem... Nope I am still in the same boat as I was with the Westell.

Now the only problem is the internet is so slow when trying to go to webpages it times out. I have opened up firefox gone to about:config and changed the necessary lines, but still dreadfully slow.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop with broadcom BCM4322 wireless card.Basically what keeps happening is my wireless will stop working, then network manager will notify me that I have lost signal. It will then try and reconnect, but it never seems to be successful. The only way I can get the wireless to work again is if I disable wireless then re-enable wireless (or do a complete system restart).
However, it does not seem to have this problem at home. The only difference I can think of from home and school is either encryption types (the university uses WEP, I use WPA) or the fact that at home there is only one access point and at university there are multiple access points all with the same SSID.Anyone have any idea how to make my laptop stop dropping connection all the time?
I just noticed this issue today but when I unplug my laptop from its adapter, the battery loses 44% of its battery immediately, Is there any way of solving this?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having a problem with the wireless on my Asus EEEPC 1000HE using Ubuntu 110.04. Digging into the laptop forums, it says there is a problem with wireless on some models of the 1000HE, but it is not the same wireless device and my wireless problem doesn't seem as bad as listed, so I think it's a different problem. But my problem is that if wireless drops for any reason, it will not start working again unless I either reboot the computer or click the wireless icon in the systray, click disconnect so it stops flashing (like it's trying to reconnect) and then suspend my computer or log off and back on. And it only does the latter because I added a file located at /etc/pm/config.d/00sleep_module with the one line that reads SUSPEND_MODULES="rt2800pci" (my wireless driver) So that one line seems to cause wireless to get a fresh connection after suspending (or something. I'm not a very advanced LInux user). I've tried running the command "sudo/etc/init.d/networking restart", but that does nothing for me. I'm not sure what other command to try to see if can fix it.[URL]

I have an Ubuntu box, 11.04 x64, running on a Dual Opteron SFF box (iWill ZMaxDP... pretty old machine). Up until a few weeks ago, it was acting as a Windows 2008 Server, but i moved it to Ubuntu.
Anyway, the machine will not stay on the network for any amount of time, without falling off... I have changed network cards, cables, ports on the switch, etc, and nothing seems to work. I have a Windows 2003 box giving out DHCP addresses, and for a while, i actually tured that off and setup a second Ubuntu box to give IPs... it made no difference. The box gets an IP, and can ping outside for a bit (2 min or so) and then just looses connectivity... ifconfig shows it with an IP (i have tried both Static and DHCP config) and nothing seems to work...
