Ubuntu Multimedia :: Video In VLC Causing System Lock Up?

Apr 18, 2011

I have an intermittent and very irritating problem. I have a desktop PC with Ubuntu Lucid installed that I use primarily for watching films using VLC. Every so often (seemingly at random) around half way through the film the whole thing locks up - the video freezes, the audio skips (like a stuck record) and the system is unresponsive - the only cure is a full restart with the power button. Im at a loss as to how to try and diagnose this issue. Is there a log somewhere that might have the info after I reboot?

Usefull info on the system:

- AMD processor - 64 capable but running 32 as I wanted to avoid issues.

- grpahics is via an NVIDIA Geforce FX5500 (PCI interface NOT AGP)

- Restricted NVIDIA drivers installed and working

- Also useful to note that this problem occured when using an AGP ATI Radeon 9200 (using the standard open source drivers of course). In fact the problem was worse with the ATI - the frequency of lock ups is less with the new set up.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Skype Causing System Audio To Stop?

Apr 28, 2010

I am using ubuntu 9.10, but I also noticed this with 9.04 on a different laptop. Sometimes when I am using skype, for no reason and after no particular event the audio for everything in the system except for the skype video will just quit, and sometimes the sound doesn't even work for the video either. Buttons don't make their sounds any more and I can't play music or hear audio on flash videos. By can't play music, its weird because the music player (amarok) will just scroll through my entire playlist really fast like it can't play any of the songs.

To solve the problem, I have to shut down skype and firefox, but I'm not sure whether I can just shut one of them down without having to shut down the other. My audio settings in skype are all set to pulse and it is adjusting the mixer levels automatically. This problem has persisted across two laptops and two versions of ubuntu (9.04 32 bit and 9.10 64 bit), so I think it's about time I finally asked how to fix it.

Debian Multimedia :: Multiple Monitors On Laptop Causing System Freeze?

Mar 18, 2010

I'm having some trouble hooking my external flatscreen monitor up to my Toshiba Tecra's docking station and having Mint (or Debian) be happy with it. The laptop uses a widescreen monitor but my external is a 4x3; I wonder if this is causing problems. Of course, it may just be the Intel 82801G graphics adapter.et things up properly in the Display Preferences config window (I'm using Gnome, btw) but when I hit apply, the system locks and I have to hard boot. I've never set up a linux box with multiple monitors before, let alone multiple monitors that require different resolutions.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Full-Screen Video Streaming Lock-up

Oct 15, 2010

When I play a video web stream full-screen, the image randomly freezes. I can still move the mouse and hear the audio, but I can't click on anything, and I can't get out of full-screen. No keyboard commands that I know work, and so I end up having to hold down the power button to kill the machine.

This didn't happen in Ubuntu, so I'm pretty sure it's not a hardware issue. And I changed the power management settings to do nothing, but it still happens. So, I don't know what the deal is. Should I try a different flash player (I have the adobe player as default)?

Ubuntu :: Firefox Causing The System Logout

Nov 11, 2010

I'm running firefox 3.6.12 with the following add ons installed: Windows Media Player 10, Div X web player 1.4.0.233 and Flash 10.1 r102. Ubuntu is 32 bit as is the Flash plugin. Quicktime, VLC and iTunes application detector are installed but disabled. I get recurrent episodes whilst using firefox where the entire screen goes grey/black and after a minute or so the login screen appears and I have to enter my password get back to the desktop. I suspect that this is flash related as it normally occurs after watching a few minutes of video. Disabling flash reduces the frequency of the problem but does not eliminate it.

Ubuntu :: Natty Browser Randomly Causing System Crash

Jul 3, 2011

Whenever I'm browsing the web on one of my natty machines, I'm subject to periodic reboots that leave nothing in the syslog. Here's the two constants I've discovered thus far.

It only happens when I'm using a browser (plugin?).
It doesn't matter whether I'm in Chromium or Firefox.
It doesn't matter whether I use Unity or Gnome 2.
This happens every 2-3 days from what I can tell.
This problem is not power related because I've tested it with and without an UPS present.

The computer does a full reboot without any shutdown procedure.

The configuration of this computer is as follows:
Intel i3 2100
ECS H67 Dual Nic
Haupaugge Dual ATSC Tuner
MDADM RAID 10
8GB 1333MHz (MemTested)

The browser plugins are as follows:
Flash 10.3r181
VLC Multimedia Plugin (compatible Totem 2.32.0)
Windows Media Player Plug-in 10 (compatible; Totem)
DivX Web Player version 1.4.0.233
QuickTime Plug-in 7.6.6

When my system does freeze, the keyboard is unresponsive (caps lock won't even turn on) and I have to use the power button to get out of it. The only thing that does work is my wireless mouse which I can still move around.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Need Best Video Player For System

May 2, 2010

I recently canned Windows to transition completely over to Ubuntu. The main reasons why I haven't gone with Ubuntu completely are the poor video playback in fullscreen as well as gaming. Recently I started playing games much less frequently, so that became a non-issue, however the video playback is still very inconvenient.

The main problem I have is tearing. The two players I got to work are VLC and the Gnome Movie Player program. I tried getting mplayer to work but I was a little confused on that one. It works better on Movie Player but there are some formats it won't play the audio on even though I have the "ubuntu-restricted-extras" installed.

Anyone have some tips on better media players out there? Does mplayer do better?

Slackware :: Console App Causing System To Hang On Shutdown?

Jul 14, 2011

I have been looking for a lightweight bandwidth monitoring app and came across bmon. It does what I need. However it has an interesting way of exiting.

when it is running and you close it down it ask you 'Really quit (y/n)' and does not shut down. I am used to just right clicking on my desktop and selecting 'leave' when it comes to shutdown time.

A few times now the laptop hangs on shutdown if bmon is open. I guess it is due to the app asking if it should shutdown. Is there a way to disable the app asking or alternatively nuke it for sure with some script on shutdown.

I could search the relevant konsole running the app and go thru the steps to shut it down but sometimes I am in a hurry and it doesn't feel like the way to go anyhow?

Fedora :: F15 Gnome Tweak Tool Causing System To Crash

Jun 23, 2011

I've just installed F15 over the weekend, and since then I've been having stability issues - primarily it seems to be related to gnome 3 (I've used fedora since its early days, and have never had such stability issues in the prior versions). Basically, when I use gnome-tweak-tool to make a modification, the system crashes; and I have to completely shut off the unit (unplug it) for it to even boot up properly. Today, I tried to change one of the options from its default, and now the very top (black bar) won't show.

I'm in the "File Manager" mode and can see the "Computer", "home" and "Trash" icons. I can move them about; and click on any of them to open. But once they're open nothing else works (clicking on any of the directories, etc, has no effect). I can ctl-alt-F2; but that's the extent. I deleted the .gconf and .gconfd directories (suggested in a different thread on a similar issue), but that didn't change anything. How do I bring back the default gnome 3 bar at the top?

I rebuilt my user account from scratch (that was the fastest approach for me). Nevertheless, gnome-tweak-tool does crash (for example, each time I turn on "File Manager"). This is clearly a bug. I'm using nvidia GTX 480; the problem might somehow be related to the card/driver. I definitely spoke too early I logged out of my account; logged back in, and the top bar is gone again and I'm left with having to deal with this again.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: New Nvidia Drivers Causing Overheating?

Mar 6, 2010

BlizzPlanet reports that people are seeing their nvidia graphics cards overheat when running the Windows 196.75 driver and playing 3D games. I have to wonder whether I fell afoul of this issue. A week ago I installed the 195.36 nVidia proprietary Linux driver on my Karmic Koala system, after adding the PPD nvidia-vdpau repository to my sources.list. I restarted so the new driver would take effect... and was surprised to see the graphics chip temperature soar to over 130 degrees Celsius. It fried itself. When I opened up the case, I checked the card's fan, and it spun freely, and I'd not heard any noise of the sort that accompanies a dying fan. I'm sticking with 190.53 for now. Has anyone else seen overheating difficulties with the 195.36 driver?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 82845G Video - Totem Received X Windows System Error

May 13, 2010

My parents have a 8 yr old computer, and they have been running linux for the last 2 years- our graphics card has been a nightmare. It has not worked right....since we first installed 7.10. In 9.04 it could still halfway play DVD's & videos (just barely). No longer in 10.04- Mplayer, totem, xine & VLC die when you try to play a video- any video.

And here's what I get(in terminal):
The program 'totem' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'. (Details: serial 89 error_code 11 request_code 132 minor_code 19). (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

Fedora Installation :: LOCK IN A Video Resolution Setting?

How can I lock in a screen resolution setting so Fedora has no other options to use? I had this problem and thought it went away as F11 has been behaving fine for weeks. Today it froze so I had to power cycle to reboot. It came back but had a crappy resolution setting and no higher options available.

I had to re-boot twice to get it to finally load the correct settings again. How can I fix this so it cannot boot to lower resolution? I want to LOCK IN the minimum resolution so it cannot boot to that crappy screen whenever it has a mind to. I feel I should be the one to decide what to load it's my computer !!

CentOS 5 :: Why Did X Lock Up The System

Sep 11, 2009

I had a system lock up recently, running RHEL4, and had no choice other than to powercycle as I could not log on at the console or remotely.

When booted, the machine ran, I could log on remotely and apache started up, but the system locked up again when I logged on to the console with X.

I suspect that the X configuration and/or the NVIDIA monitor driver was messing things up and I took the opportunity to migrate to CentOS 5.3.

How can I determine what happened? I still have the /var/log files when the system locked up including messages, boot.log, Xorg.0.log, etc.

I _SUSPECT_ that what messed up X and thus the system was the NVIDIA driver that I downloaded to get X to work on the console monitor, a SUN AI24PO. X would not work with this monitor and any of the default drivers that came with my RHEL4 disks.

I really hesitate to use connect this same SUN AI24PO monitor again but still, I only have a suspicion that the monitor/NVIDIA driver were the reason the system locked up.

The graphics card is a GeFORCE FX5200

Were the lockup problems a result of the monitor/NVIDIA driver?

Ubuntu :: How I Could Get System To Free Keyboard And Mouse When Get Lock-up

Jul 15, 2010

I am running Ubuntu 10.4 and using Virtualbox very intensively to develop under windows. This is the perfect combination: Virtualbox is excellent and gives great speed, functionality and connectability. However, I keep getting a keyboard and mouse 'lock-up' and find that I have to power-down my PC in order to get things working again. The strange thing here is that Ubuntu seems to continue working fine: for example audio keeps playing and the system once successfully finished burning a CD even though keyboard and mouse were frozen.

This happens only very sporadically but is a serious problem because I can't have things freezing when I am in the middle of development or am demoing functionality to a client. At first I thought it was Ubuntu but it only seems to happen when VirtualBox is running so I am wondering whether there is a problem with the keyboard and mouse capture for Virtualbox and that this is causing the problem.I have de-installed and re-installed Virtualbox but this didn't help.So does anyone have a idea how I could either fix this problem or how I could get the system to free the keyboard and mouse when I get a lock-up.

The step "Enable Full DVD Playback(Dual Layer DVD Support)" did not finish correctly doh and now I can't use 'sudo apt-get' for anything or the software center or using the 'Update Manager' does not work.

The update manger says it may be caused by an update not finishing correctly which sounds correct as explained above. The apt-get command gives me back the following....'Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock resource temporarily unavailable' 'unable to lock administration directory /var/lib/dpkg is another process using it?'

I tried the obvious restart but that hasn't worked.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: System Lock-up During Excessive Disk I/O

Aug 17, 2011

At times, the disk I/O will go through the roof and cause the system to slow to a crawl. X becomes really slow and can go completely unresponsive, dropping all keyboard input, preventing me from restarting X. Sometimes I will switch to a virtual terminal to log in and run iotop to check what is using all the I/O, but it will be so I/O bound that the login times out. Sometimes I do manage to get in and can run iotop and then it is a matter of waiting 10 minutes or so for python to load up. Usually by this time, whatever was causing the slowdown has finished and so I don't even know what the problem is. Other times it never recovers (I once left it over night, since it was at the end of my work day and just went home)

This is my work computer so it is very inconvenient to have to wait for this I/O blockage or lose all my work rebooting. I thought it was due to swapping, so I disabled swap, but that hasn't helped. I'm running the cfq I/O scheduler, but I've tried both deadline and noop.

Also, is there a way to disable the login timeout so I can at least get logged in to the box from the console when this happens?

Hardware :: Is It Possible For A System Lock To Physically Kill Disk?

Aug 15, 2010

I had an aftermarket cpu cooler, and one of the mounts broke, causing poor contact with the cpu and the system hung. I've been running the system through paces after replacing the cooler and everything seems fine. I have two disks, one had muliple distros installed and the first one had one slackware installation. I decided a good test would be to reinstall an OS and since I wasn't booting into the old slackware install I decided to reformat the entire first disk which contained lilo and reinstall a newer version of slack. I had repeated boot failures, I've reinstalled, obtained a new ISO and reburned, I've installed Ubuntu and GRUB..Nothing I do will yield a successful boot off the first disk, although no live cd or install has given any errors and the installs on the second disk boot fine. I'm confused as to what is causing this.

Is it possible that the disk itself is damaged somehow even though checking for bad blocks, reformatting, repartitioning, etc show no errors, and a boot loader works fine from the disk, or is it more likely that something is maybe wrong with the motherboard?
