Ubuntu Multimedia :: VLC Player Can't Access MKF Filed On NAS

Jun 13, 2011

I am bringing up a Ubuntu 11.04 PC to hopefully use as a U-HTPC. It is collocated on a LAN with a Windows 7 W-HTPC and two NASs that have movie files stored as MKV files. The U-HTPC is connected on its back side by HDMI to my Sony Receiver and on to my Sharp HDTV. One of the applications I have installed on the U-HTPC is VLC Player which I want to use to play the MKV files from the two NASs. But so far I cannot play any MKV file because I have no access to files on the NASs. I should say the NASs were installed to store MKV files to be viewed by the W-HTPC running VLC Player. That worked fine, but I do not have access to the MKV files from VLC Player running on the U-HTPC. how to gain access to the MKV files on the two NASs from U-HTPC.

I've been away from Linux for a while, so I need to get informed about some of the 32- vs. 64-bit issues concerning video players and codecs. So, what is everyone using these days?

More specifically, is it possible to play, e.g., .wmv files with 64-bit Kaffeine (my favorite player) or any other 64-bit video player? If so, then which combination of player and codec should I use?

Ubuntu :: "The" Filed Incorrectly In Rhythmbox And Banshee

Jul 26, 2010

This is kind of a minor complaint, but nonetheless a problem that I'd like to see resolved. In Rhythmbox and Banshee, artist names that begin with the word "the" are filed under "T" instead of whatever letter comes after that. I'm used to using iTunes, which simply ignores the word "the" and files an artist name according to whatever letters come after "the". For example, songs by the artist named "The Beatles" are filed under "T" in both Rhythmbox and Banshee, whereas in iTunes they're filed under "B". Is there any way to change this?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: How To Set VLC As Default DVD Player

Oct 7, 2010

How do I set VLC as the default DVD player in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS?There seems to be no obvious way to change in which player the DVD's open up in - you can only choose the default media player, but this is not what I want to do.I would like VLC as a default for DVD viewing only - I use Totem for other video files. I used Kaffeine for a while to play DVD's, but found VLC to be superior, especially in DVD menu support.

I know there are threads about how this is done in previous versions (like in 8.04 and so on), but I'm not sure if those still apply for 10.04? Through gconf-editor
