View 6 RepliesI am bringing up a Ubuntu 11.04 PC to hopefully use as a U-HTPC. It is collocated on a LAN with a Windows 7 W-HTPC and two NASs that have movie files stored as MKV files. The U-HTPC is connected on its back side by HDMI to my Sony Receiver and on to my Sharp HDTV. One of the applications I have installed on the U-HTPC is VLC Player which I want to use to play the MKV files from the two NASs. But so far I cannot play any MKV file because I have no access to files on the NASs. I should say the NASs were installed to store MKV files to be viewed by the W-HTPC running VLC Player. That worked fine, but I do not have access to the MKV files from VLC Player running on the U-HTPC. how to gain access to the MKV files on the two NASs from U-HTPC.

Looks like SElinux has stopped working
I have tried: 1. zcat boot.img.gz > /dev/sde and copy the image file debian-testing-amd64-netinst.iso to the usb-stick. 2. and manual whit syslinux /dev/sde1And also various builds of testing and it can't load the image file. always i get the error message "Filed to copy file from cd-rom"And i cant ether install 6,01 Before the image debian stable 6,0 worked and several testing builds before the stable release 6.0.The boot process work flawless but installer can not find the iso according to error msgI have verified the iso file with md5sum and made sure to write out to de stick whit sync. And haven't changed my bios boot that worked before.
View 4 Replies View RelatedThis is kind of a minor complaint, but nonetheless a problem that I'd like to see resolved. In Rhythmbox and Banshee, artist names that begin with the word "the" are filed under "T" instead of whatever letter comes after that. I'm used to using iTunes, which simply ignores the word "the" and files an artist name according to whatever letters come after "the". For example, songs by the artist named "The Beatles" are filed under "T" in both Rhythmbox and Banshee, whereas in iTunes they're filed under "B". Is there any way to change this?

I started to install Fedora thinking I was just going to place it in the / and /home partitions I already have but the installer only seems to give me the option to use the whole disk.I have 3 / and 3 /home partitions 2 of each are occupied by Linux Mint and Mint KDE so I wanted to use the last / and /home for Fedora.

Every now and then, maybe twice a month, everything freezes and the only thing I can do is to reboot. The question is, is this a somewhat normal thing to happen using Linux? I have used other distros as well and it seems to happen with them too.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm now running ubuntu 9.10 and dual booting with 10.04. I want to check out Mint 9 (all 64 bit btw). I have downloaded Mint 9 64 and burned the ISO at the slowest speed and I've reburned it on many dvd's. When I put the dvd in and restart I can't get it to go to the dvd writer. It is set to be first in the bios and when I put in something else like GParted it works just fine. I'm not sure what the problem could be, perhaps a bad download? When I put in the dvd and go to Computer, the dvd shows up and I can see the Mint 9 iso file. I extracted the iso and here is the md5sum.txt:

I have a dual boot, Ubuntu 9.10 and Lucid 10.04. I want to install Mint 9 over ubuntu 9.10 so I have a dual boot of Mint 9 and lucid. I'm in step 5 of the 8 steps, which is manual install but I cant figure out what to do next. 9.10 is in /dev/sda6 and the swap is /dev/sda7. When I highlight the partition that has 9.10 and click forward I get the message: No root file system is defined. Please correct this from the partitioning menu. I'm a noobie at this and do not know what to do next.

I just got Mint 10 DLed and I'm ready to install. I was reading around and saw that a Live USB can be done. Can anyone tell me how to do that? I also wanted to install it to a PC that isn't ready yet, but I a saw one could make a USB drive work like an OS disk. Can anyone help me with that also. All the years I've worked with PCs, I never installed an OS off a flashdrive.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have heard so many good things about linux and I have heard linux mint is the easiest to use. I was really looking forward to my first Linux experience. I was disappointed to be prompted for a username and password after booting to the Live CD for mint 10. The user manual did not show this step. I searched for help on this but the two suggestions I found did not work. One told me to use mint as the username with a blank password. The other suggested using user and pass for these two fields.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am wanting to add Linux Mint to my computer, but I do not have the room to really do a real install on my computer beside Ubuntu and Vista, so I want to install it on a VirtualBox machine. I have a few questions before I do so. A.) Is all this reversible? B.) It will not affect my current system. Like, if something goes wrong with the install for some reason, it will not affect my current Ubuntu OS, which I will be installing it under. C.) When it asks you to create a hard drive, that is reversible, right? And it's only used when you are using VB? D.) About the hard drive you have to create. I have 2 partitions partitions that I use mainly, my / Linux partition, and OS, which is my Windows NTFS partition. If I create the hard drive on OS, will that mess up the VB?

I have two printers one of which (Canon BJC300) is physically connected to the Desktop PC. The other is netorked through a wireless router. Worked find with Samba/Cups in Linux Mint. Can't get it to work with Ubuntu. (Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu).
Desktop PC Name is "pcname"
Desktop PC Workgroup is "pcworkgroup"
Printer Name is "Canon BJC 3000"
Not really but they'll do for the demo.
Set up printer in Ubuntu smb://pcworkgroup/pcname/Canon BJC 3000
Appears to accept it that but doesn't print. Times out with 'printer unaccessible'.
Where do I need to concentrate my efforts?
Are there some permissions I've overlooked. I haven't altered anything on the Desktop PC.
I am running Mint 8 KDE 64-bit edition, which is very nice by the way. Last night I tried to run the upgrade to lucid, but it did not commit any changes, and the version is still listed as Mint 8 Helena, which is based on Karmic. I am guessing the Mint guys have set apt-get to look at the Mint repositories rather than Ubuntu. What do I need to do to bring my system up to version 10.04, including Gnome 2.30 and KDE 4.4.2?
