Ubuntu Multimedia :: Removing Upto A Folder From Filepath?

Jul 3, 2010

I'm trying to batch encode some old mpeg2 vids to x264. After much playing around, I've finally found some settings that work across the board in preserving quality. The good news is the converted vids are about half the size.

I'm using handbrake to do this and with over a thousand clips, converting via the gui would be way too time consuming. Naturally CLI is much faster for something like this. I've found all the flags and arguments to pass to handbrake

So, suppose my vids are in ~/MyVideos. I want to store my converted vids in ~/ConvertedVids. The problem is that there is a whole folder hierarchy after ~/MyVideos that goes several levels deep; I want to preserve this. In handbrake, the output file is a parameter like so:

Code:
handbrake_cli -i input_file -o output_file

I know stripping away the filepath upto ~/MyVideos/ should be trivial with awk. I don't know awk and was wondering if someone here could give me the command I need.

Ubuntu :: Filepath To Other Part Of The Harddrive?

Oct 13, 2010

i have 4 different harddriveparts (i hope that is the correct translation), on my PC, one for the OS (ubuntu) and 3 others for programms and documents for example. But now i need to go in a folder on another part in the console.

The other part has the id E61441A014417519, so i would guess that the order you have to enter would be: "cd mediaE61441A014417519folder" and then i would be "in" the folder, but the console said that there is not even a folder named "E61441A014417519".

Debian Multimedia :: Removing Epiphany Without Removing Half The System?

May 31, 2011

I know a bunch of commands and I am comfortable using the terminal, I even set a powerpc server but I can't figure out how to remove epiphany on this new computer I'm setting up. I didn't install anything with tasksel. I installed gnome and xorg afterwards... I load it up and 'startx' just fine. then I check around for the programs that were installed. I lik'em gimp, lot's of utilities. gedit. anyway I find epiphany, which I have already established that I dislike, I immediately go to the root terminal (another nice program that comes with gnome) and type apt-get remove epiphany-browser-data the output says it will be deleting gnome... however I have researched and found these are simpy meta packages that don't really matter.... however under the section that states all the packages that will be removed by autoremove there is a huge list... I doubt these packages are safe to remove. how to remove epiphany without removing a huge amount of probably needed software

Software :: Removing Mounted Drive Folder Safely

Dec 3, 2009

I have a nightly scheduled script which creates a $vhostname directory under /mnt, mounts a windows box pointing to /mnt/$vhostname then rsyncs (pulls) some files/folders from the mount point. After this, I want to unmount the drive and remove the /mnt/$vhostname directory. Problem is that removing the /mnt/$vhostname directory sometimes ends up deleting all the files on the source! Example of script (stripped out lots of superfluous stuff):

Code:
vHOSTNAME='testhost'
vRSYNCFLAGS='-ahvz --inplace'
/bin/mkdir -p /mnt/${vHOSTNAME}
/usr/bin/rsync ${vRSYNCFLAGS} /mnt/${vHOSTNAME}/KAVSHARE /backups3/${vHOSTNAME}/
/bin/umount -l /mnt/${vHOSTNAME}
/bin/rm -Rf /mnt/${vHOSTNAME}

It seems that my umount line isn't disconnecting the mount, leaving the following line to literally delete all directories, recursively. Is there a way of safely just deleting the directory (ie: mount link) without linux accidentally trashing the whole source?

Ubuntu Installation :: Removing Evolution From Synaptic Vs Just Removing The Applet

Feb 27, 2011

what i did was, remove evolution mail from synaptic, what i wanted to do was just remove the indicator applet from the task bar. i read a bunch of bad stuff about removing evolution from synaptic vs just removing the applet.

im worried. did i break anything or put my security at risk. after, i used a command (older) (sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop)to install ubuntu desktop. because i thought that it would fix evolution. then i went to synaptic and installed a package called evolution. i rechecked evolution in applications menu. however, i notice that i have both a checkable evolution and two evolution icons. nothing 'seems' broken. im not sure if it ever was. and evolution calender pops up as normal, as does the the installed plain evolution. they both seems to be an exact copy of the other.

all i really wanted to do was remove the indicator applet. did i make a serious mistake. since ive had ubuntu, ive reformatted a lot because i was worried i made a mistake of some kind. however now im into the more "make a mistake and fix it stage' as im pretty happy with my current desktop and have worked hard to customize it. the command, sudo apt-get remove indicator-messages removed the mail icon. i still am worried that i broke something, or put my security at risk. also, now i have two mail icons. evolution mail and calendar, and another just called evolution.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Removing The Watermark From Jpeg?

Feb 18, 2010

I met a guy who is going about with a thermal imaging device. He wants to remove the watermark from the images and tells me that the software developed by the company can do this using only the jpeg. Unfortunately it's only available for windows. I'm dubious that this is possible, but I have to admit I'm not extremely well versed in image manipulation. Is it possible to extract the unadulterated image from a copy with the watermark and other data on it?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Removing Embedded Album Art

Feb 26, 2011

I use EasyTAG to edit the tags of my music. I believed I could also use EasyTAG to remove embedded album art, but this is not entirely the case.EasyTAG appears able to remove references to an embedded image so that the image will not appear in audio players and tag editors. However, the image must still exist within the audio file because the file size remains exactly the same. Contrast this with Mp3tag where removing album art also decreases the audio file's size.My question: is this a bug on EasyTAG's part? If so, what Linux program could I use instead?

I run a server with nginx at the front and apache at the background. Nginx serves as a reverse proxy in here. As there were lots of DOS attacks, I have implemented Deflate-DDOS, APF and Nginx anti-ddos features and the server runs without a problem. Once every month, the load on server increases upto 300 and I receive an email like this :

Subject : Cron <root@server> [ -x /usr/lib/php5/maxlifetime ] && [ -d /var/lib/php5 ] && find /var/lib/php5/ -type f -cmin +$(/usr/lib/php5/maxlifetime) -print0 | xargs -n 200 -r -0 rm

Content :

There's more that 100,000 ( I suppose ) lines on this email. I have no idea what the problem is. It seems there's something with the session, but I really don't know what it is.

I want to remove GDM altogether, naturally I tried:

But it appears to be taking some lower level gnome libraries down with it. As soon as it's removed, I can no longer start gedit or gnome terminal for example. If either is run from the terminal, I see, "Cannot display" or something along those lines. I end up reinstalling gdm3 and everything works perfectly.I already used update-rc to stop the gdm daemon from booting altogether, I just want to remove it now for a greater sense of cleanliness I guess.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Xserver No Longer Works After Removing Bad Graphics Card?

Apr 30, 2010

It all started Tuesday morning. I woke up and turned my computer on. Normally I just leave it on all the time, but I turned it off the previous night for some reason. When I turned it on, everything worked fine for about 10 minutes, until my monitor said "Monitor Working Out of Scan Range." I messed with the settings on the monitor to try and get it back, but to no avail. Restarting would make it work, but for even shorter periods. It eventually would display the manufacturer image (Everex), and then go dead again with the same message.

I thought it was the monitor at first, and got a new one. The new one is a wide screen 18.5 inch Dell IN1910N. The problem persisted, so I knew it wasn't this. I kinda figured it out when I started smelling something burning coming from my computer, and discovered it was the graphics card I installed awhile back. It is the pci ATI X1550, and its fan no longer worked.

So I figured, well, I will just remove it and go back to the onboard video. Doing this worked fine, until I got to the stage where it tried to boot to the Xserver, and then the computer just hangs. No sounds indicate I ever get to a logon screen or anything.

Now, I tried commands like sudo dpkg-configure xserver-xorg, and it asked me a lot of questions about my keyboard, but didn't fix my video. I also tried the "Xfix" option in recovery mode, and it purged all the old fglrx drivers, but that didn't help either.

I am currently using a live CD (I was doing straight command-line for awhile, after I also played hell getting the wireless working). I tried literally coping and pasting the entire contents of the X11 folder over, but that didn't work either (the xorg.conf files were the same anyway). I don't know what to do to get my old partition to boot X correctly.

All the commands I was copying before are not in my terminal now, and I'm not sure exactly what command-line information you need. I know that Openchrome is supposed to run the onboard VIA video, but I don't recall the command that tells me everything about it.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Removing Recommended Updates In Yast?

May 20, 2011

When I open Yast's software management in opensuse 11.4, there's like 400mb of changes it basically forces me to install. For instance, flash player, libre office stuff, gstreamer etc.

I remove these from the download list, but when I go install something like the nvidia driver I need, it still downloads and installs all that other stuff first, whether I remove it from the list or not. It still makes me agree to the flash player terms or it won't install anything.

How can I get all these recommended updates off of there and just install what I want to individually?

Debian Multimedia :: Remove KDE Applications Without Removing Entire Desktop

May 9, 2015

I've installed Debian GNU/Linux, from a Testing NetInstall ISO, then after setting up the system, I've installed the KDE desktop.Well, I like to have a system with the applications I want, not the applications that the system wants for me, I mean, that's the point of GNU/Linux, isn't?

Thus I want to remove some applications from KDE, let's say KWrite. I know it's a good text editor, but Kate is way better, at least for me, and... I should have the authority to decide what applications I want on my system, I think you got the point.So I installed Kate, and when I try to remove KWrite, APT asks me to remove nothing but this applications: kde-baseapps kde-plasma-desktop.

I don't understand why do KDE forces me to get rid of the entire desktop... when I'm just trying to remove a single application, and a replacement it's already installed.
