Ubuntu Multimedia :: Praat Will Not Display Spectrograms?

I'm trying to get Praat to run correctly on Ubuntu 10.10. It seems that there are major compatibility issues between Praat and PulseAudio. However, after jumping that hurtle and finally getting Praat to play sound, I still cannot see a spectrogram display in the edit window. Praat seems to be able to read the sound file as it will play it and also give statistics on formants, pitch, intensity etc but I cannot see the actual spectrogram display.

how to get the display to the TV so I can watch movies. I have a Compaq Presario V5000 laptop, AMD Sempron processor, and an ATI Radeon Xpress 200M card. I have been using this successfully on Windows XP, but would prefer to get my feet wet more with Ubuntu.

The run timer in the lower left corner in the VLC window is off by a factor of 1.5553333...It displays 3 minutes elapsed, and 4:40 has elapsed on my stopwatch.edit:I just calculated the error for a 2 hour recording, and it worked out exactly - the clock is off by a factor of 1.5553333, for this captured format.

I'd like to get a colorimeter to work with Ubuntu 10.04 (I can update if necessary) and it seems like the eye-one ones are more linux friendly than the spyders but the eye-one display 2 is pretty expensive so I was thinking of the eye-one display LT. I found a website with some info on them:

Running x64-U_8.04.1/EVGA_nv9400/Viewsonic 19" LCD
On a concurrent forum--INSTALL-- thread I've reported being "trapped" in a 640x480 screen resolution after changing graphics cards. It is very difficult/impossible to use screen GUI-function as displays overlap and do-NOT "traverse".
I have got installed the NVidia GUI tool which reports the proper card, screen display ( 1280x1040 ) and the current X-WIn setting ( 640x480 ).
A poster on <INSTALL> suggested use of the CLI command <xrandr> to fix screen display ... thus perhaps allowing full GUI function for changing X-WIN setting. Is use of <xrandr> the best-available method for me to get out of the 640x480 "trap"?

I have been running linux on my thinkpad r50 for about a year, specifically 9.04. The problem is with this new 10.04 lts installation when I go to hook up an external monitor via the avg port and run xrandr to initialize the display, the laptop monitor panel becomes a garbled image and the television that is attached to the computer says no input. As of now I am stumped and open for assistance on this one.

I installed Ubuntu on a Toshiba Satellite about a month ago. It worked for about three hours. I installed Wine, and it still worked but the display would sometimes go black for a few seconds. Later that day I rebooted and that was it, no more Ubuntu. It goes through all of the process of booting but then the screen just goes black before I even get to the purple Ubuntu screen. I'm running this on a drive in an enclosure so I simply plugged the drive into another machine ( actually two other machines ), and it works perfectly. I have an old Vista drive that I put in the Toshiba and that works just fine, so it's not a pure hardware issue. Just to be sure I wiped the Ubuntu drive and re-installed, this time without installing wine. No Toshiba love. Just the black screen. I even made a flash drive with the loader and iso from the Ubuntu site. Same deal. It starts to boot from the flash and then just goes black where you would normally expect the purple Ubuntu screen. This thing is driving me nuts and I am at a point where I really need this machine working and will be faced with simply wiping the Ubuntu drive and installing Windows.

im new to linux and ubuntu. i have windows 7 installed and that works on my samsung plasma full HD. But when try to display ubuntu on my tv it says mode not supported check source resolution. The cable is dvi to hdmi btw. ive tried a couple of diff resolutions on ubuntu but none of them works. my graphics card is an older radeon x550. ubuntu does work on a standard monitor though.

have a system that has a GTX285 and a PCI 8400GS. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 I'm trying to get the system to use the 8400GS to run X windows and the GTX285 to use as the compute device. Everytime I start up my system with both cards it always uses the GTX285 as the display device. How do I configure it to use the 8400 instead? I've tried the nvidia settings program and I don't see how to do this. Do I need to change something in my xorg.conf ? I don't know much about editing this file.

I'd like to do something, but I don't seem to find the solution. Here is my problem: I have a laptop and I plugged in another monitor to it. What I want to do is when UserA logs in, both of the monitor is used, but when UserB logs in, only one of the monitor is used. When I change the display settings it applies to the other user too. I'd like to have different display settings for each user

I am new to Ubuntu (Karmic with GNOME). I have a Samsung LED UEB7020, with an Asrock ION 330 BD player feeding to a Onkyo TXSR607, AV rec. The other day I downloaded NVidia v180.25, which was very useful, because it immediately solved an earlier teething problem of no sound. However immediately upon re-booting and ever since, the screen size is too big for the TV, meaning that I can not see the top, bottom, side and left of the display by about 2 inches either way. I have checked the NVidia resolution settings and they are correct for the TV, ie 1920 by 1080.
My etc/X11/ xorg.conf file reads as follows:

My viewsonic monitor will only go to 800x600 resolution on ubuntu..I had a similar problem with centos but went in an manually configured as root the display GUI and increased the resolution. Is there any way to do this with ubuntu? 800x600 is annoying on a 17" high end monitor

My display settings seem to have been corrupted after I upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10. I can only view my screen in 1280 x 1024 - no other resolutions work. Ubuntu is also not detecting my monitor, a Dell E193FP (19"). In reading some other posts, I see that the first question will be to post my xorg file, which follows.

I am trying to write a script to turn my HTPC off automatically and turn it back on again at a specified interval.
I've got the turn on off bit sorted using /sys/class/rtc/rtc0/wakealarm but I want the script to not turn the machine off if say something is downloading, I am currently watching something etc and i dont think I will have any trouble with that.
But what I would really like to be able to do is tell if my TV is currently on. I dont think anything x11 related would work here and this may not even be possible. Does Ubuntu "know" if it's display device is powered on or not? if so can I interrogate this somehow?

I just bought a new desktop with integrated intel graphics and built in HDMI. I don't have a monitor, only a 42 inch LCD TV. Now, when I plugged in the HDMI cable, when ubuntu loaded, it was oversized(overscanned) cutting off both panels(think zoomed in a bit). After failing to fix, I bought an ATI HD4350. When using the open source ati drivers(default on reboot), the screen looked perfect and fit perfectly when using the DVI to HDMI cable to the TV, was a bit UNDERsized when using a regular HDMI cable to the HDMI port on the new video card. Now, when I installed Catalyst...same problem as before. Entire image was overscanned using either port. Decided to get a better video card anyways, so returned ATI for Nvidia 9500. When booting again into a clean install, with nv drivers and using DVI-> HDMI cable(9500 doesn't have HDMI out), the image again fit perfectly on the TV. When installing the Nvidia proprietary driver, image goes back to being overscanned(Exactly same proportion as intel HDMI out and ATI with catalyst). Thankfully Nvidia gives an overscan correction tool that I scaled the picture down with, but it's ever so slightly off center or our of proportion(that is, it leaves small black strip on either side when height is adjusted perfectly).
In a nutshell, the open source drivers display perfectly. Proprietary and intel drivers are overscanned. Now, to confuse you anymore, with Lucid, even the open source ATI driver is overscanned by default. I'm trying to track this problem down and have no idea where to start.

I regularly use 2 monitors at 2 different locations. Booting Ubuntu on monitor 1 works great. Booting with monitor 2 connected causes Ubuntuto load with really low resolution.If Ubuntu is running and I unplug monitor 1 and connect monitor 2 all is well and it works perfectly.How can I tell Ubuntu not to check/change the display settings during boot so that it will work correctly with monitor 2?

Using 64Bit Ubuntu 10.04 on a VAIO VGN-FW373J. ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650. This relates to Bug 451282. If I install the ATI 3D Drivers, the dimming problem goes away, but a host of other bugs crop up. After a resume from screen lock, suspend, or hibernation, the screen is reduced to graphical chaos. There are also hibernation errors. This bug is worse than the dimming bug, so I've uninstalled the 3d ATI drivers. If I can't find a workaround, I may have to look for a different Linux Distro or be content with Windows 7 on this particular laptop.

I just installed lucid on my laptop with a second screen. Unfortunately, I cannot display any video. Neither on the laptop screen nor on the second external screen. In contrast, rebooting without attaching the external screen allows me to display videos again.
I never experienced this kind of behavior with Ubuntu 9.10.
Graphic card: Intel 945

I have a 3TB home server storing all my files and a mix of XP, Vista & Ubuntu clients on a Gigabit network. When I access a folder with JPEG photos on the XP or Vista machines and I have them set to display thumbnails that is exactly what I get. The thumbnails load nice and fast. When I access the same folders on the Ubuntu machines with "icon view" it only displays a black icon that says "JPG" but if I copy that folder over to a local drive on the Ubuntu machines then the thumbs display just fine. Does anyone have any idea how to change this on the Ubuntu machines so they load thumbnails for networked photos as well?

Installed Ubuntu 10.04 recently. Been exploring it now.
My PC config: Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 @ 2.8 GHz,
Motherboard: Intel DG31 PR
No graphics card.
Display on Ubuntu is not great as compared to Windows 7. Are there any device drivers available for Ubuntu?? Or any other tweak to improve the display?
Also the video playback isn't that great. Videos get stuck once in a while and I also cannot play .MKV videos.
I am using VLC Media Player to play videos.

After installing Ubuntu 10.10 on a laptop Acer Aspire 5942G graphics card ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650, some time after the boot falls color monitor. Color depth is only 65000 colors or more. In all settings, all is well (and the color depth is there spelled 24bit). Color depth is reduced at some time after a reboot. After further experiments with the screensaver was set: color spoils the energy saving mode and turn off the display!After disabling the option "disable display through .." color is now always saved in the norm!

Why is it on Ubuntu/Maverick that my display insists on going BLANK after a certain period of computer inactivity EVEN THOUGH I have NO screensaver functions set and the put screen to sleep function in power management is set to NEVER and ALL functions in BIOS are all set to not have display go into suspend mode ?

This is just an idea, and I want to know if it can be done. Could I set up Nautilus so that videos and songs have their durations shown in the filename? For example, let's say I have a video of me shooting targets. There would be an icon, and the filename underneath would say: "Range trip 2009.flv - 8:23"

All of a sudden today there was no display on my Ubuntu PC. It seems to be powering on - I get the LG screen when the monitor is switched on - but it goes into "Power Saving Mode". How do I diagnose this? I already unplugged and plugged. Monitor is connected to a graphics card - no change when I switched to VGA.

I have recently switched from Banshee to Songbird, and am loving it. Especially now that there is a ppa for it, which I just discovered. However, i have tried to download an addon and a theme, and apparently it just told me to restart after installing, but it doesn't show up when I go to View>Feathers. It just shows the default theme, Gonzo. Has anyone had this problem, or knows how to fix it?

I am on Lucid 10.04 with Nvidia 9600m (v195.36.24) My TV is 1280x720, my Laptop is 1600x900 (Closest setting to the TV is 1360x768 ). I plug my laptop to my tv via an HDMI cable. I press F1 to get into my presentation mode, and the tv shows most of the desktop, but not all of it. Is there any way to conveniently make it so it automatically sets it to 1280x720?

Recently I encountered a problem with a triple-monitor setup where the EDID was rejected by the nvidia driver (version 195.36.0, claiming that the EDID checksum was invalid. The maximum resolution that the driver would allow was 640x480. Searching through the X logs (/var/log/Xorg.0.log), I found the following message:
