Ubuntu Multimedia :: Command Line For Gnome Sound Preferences?
May 4, 2010Is there a way to control the gnome sound preferences widget via the command line? I use optical digital out (IEC95. It works fine. but everytime I reboot there is no sound, I have to go to sound preferences, hardware tab, select my internal audio device, change it from digital stereo duplex to analog surround 5.1, then back to digital stereo duplex, and then the sound works again. I would like to be able to do this via command line so I can write a little startup script and not have to do that every time i reboot.

I have written a small script to switch display from monitor to TV when a want to watch a DVD, but I didn't find how to switch sound from speakers to HDMI in command line. For the moment I have to open KDE system settings -> Multimedia and move sound devices by hand.

This is how I start debian. I can choose between debian gnulinux and advanced options. I select debian.
Then 'please unlock crypt' shoIws. I enter 'crypto'.
Then debian gui login screen shows. I enter 'dd' and 'word'.
Debian 8 gnome classical starts.
Can I login to debian 8 gnome classical by entering 'dd' and 'word' in a command line?
I do not want to login by debian gui login screen. But by command line.
If I select advanced options. Then recovery mode, I can get a command line. If I can login there, then I do not know how to.

When I boot up, (runlevel 3), sound is there via the mic/line-in jack, but as soon as KDE starts, the sound cuts. Feb 21, 2011I decided to dual boot install Ubuntu with my Windows 7. After a lot of hair pulling, i finally managed to boot the live cd environment with "nomodeset". From there i installed ubuntu. When it finished installing, i booted to the new ubuntu install only to be presented with a command line login. If i change the boot line from "quiet splash" to "nomodeset", i can coax ubuntu to boot in low graphics mode. However this is not a permanent fix, and doing so causes a 2 inch offest of the screen on the right hand side. Only the have the missing 2 inches appear on the left side. If from the "Ubuntu is running in low graphics mode" message, i select "console login", and type "startx" i just comes out with "X Server Fatal error- No Screens found". I also tried:

This is a cd that i got free from Canonical themselves. It's Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, and I have Intel Integrated Graphics.

Jun 8, 2010I have an old PC (130mb RAM, 6gb hard drive).
I installed a command-line version of Ubuntu 10.04 using the Alternate CD. The machine was wiped, and I used most of the default settings.
I used a thirteen character user id which consisted of mixed case letters and numbers, and an eighteen character password that contains mixed case letters and numbers and a # sign.
When I rebooted, the command-line login would not accept my password. I assumed I had somehow made a mistake, and just wiped the machine again and reinstalled. This time I was very careful with the user name/pw.
Again, the command-line login did not accept my password!
On a hunch, I took an old Ubuntu 7.10 Alternate CD and erased the machine again. I installed a command-line version of Ubuntu. AGAIN --- it will not accept my password even though I'm 100% sure it is correct.

Basically, I need a command line solution for sending an HTTP POST request essentially clicking on a button. For future reference, it'd be helpful to know how to send a POST request with, say, a username and password if I ever find myself in that situation in another hotel or airport.

Ubuntu :: Login Background / Gdm Theme Has Turned Black
Jun 27, 2011I just installed xubuntu natty, and the gdm theme (xubuntu-gdm-theme) has somehow reverted to something ugly. The background is black instead of showing xubuntu-greybird.png, the panel bar is light gray, and the shutdown button is now gray instead of a red/orange power icon.
The problem appeared while I was tweaking my account settings, possibly when I used the users-admin tool, but I'm not sure.
I tried purging and reinstalling the following packages:
gdm
xubuntu-gdm-theme
xubuntu-artwork
xubuntu-default-settings
xubuntu-desktop
...but that didn't help.
For comparison, I'm attaching screen shots of my (broken) gdm screen and a correct one from a virtual machine. (Try to ignore the fact that they're different screen resolutions.)

The only problem I am having is with sound; I am unable to hear sound played through both browser-based Flash and locally stored files.
Is there something that I have to do before I can use sound? Edit: I have solved the original problem however I would like to know if I can remove pulseaudio as it seems that I am only using alsa.
