Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Sound On Clean 10.04 Lucid Lynx On A Thinkpad T61?
Sep 26, 2010
I've installed a clean Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx on my ThinkPad T61, and everything seems to be OK, but I am unable to get any sound output at all (internal speakers and external audio).
No system sounds, no sound from Movie Player, Rythmbox, Sound Recorder.
On my previous Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10 I had no problems with sound (as far as I can recall).
Any hints to what I should do to try to get sound output?
The output from various sound related commands included below.
Code:
$ sudo lshw -C sound
*-multimedia
description: Audio device
product: 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller

I can't get sound to work and am not sure how to trouble shoot. The sound DOES work when first booting, and I can make it play a test beep with the sound config app. But I cannot get sound from any other application. One possibly relevant fact is that I see a lot of I/O errors early in the boot process, but they flash by quickly so I cannot quote them.

I get no sound for anything, I am running Ubuntu Lucid-amd64. Pulseaudio detects my sound card, and appears to be playing to it when I look at pavucontrol. But I get no sound for anything, not even alerts. I don't eve know how to debug it, because everything I have looked at looks like it should be working. I have checked every mute button I can find, and nothing is muted that I can see. The relevant information for my sound card from lspci -v is:

For the last 3 release all my hardware have been working like a charm. But after upgrading to Lycid I have problems with skype. I fix the camera issues with the following command
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype
But the sound of my microphone is totally jagged. I have an ICH8 Intel integrated card. I have worked the last 2 years (with an ocasionally glith in the volume) but not having Mic is a real PITAo what can I try to fix it? Please, don't tell me "remove all pulse audio stuff"... It must be another way.

I've recently built a half-new computer and installed Lucid Lynx on it.I managed to get everything else working and even got the ATI drivers installed. However, I can't get above 60 Hz on my old CRT monitor - the ATI driver controls have 60 as the highest selectable refresh rate. The preferred 1152x864 screenmode works fine otherwise.
Here are the known specifications:
Monitor horizontal refresh: 30-86 kHz
Monitor vertical refresh: 50-150 Hz
Known working display mode on earlier graphics card: 1152x864, 85 Hz.
My motherboard (with integrated graphics) is the Asus M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 AMD 880G AM3. The GPU is Radeon HD 4250.The ATI drivers seem to have "taken over" the xorg.conf, so I don't know where to input any values.

I have just installed Lucid Lynx but cannot get K9copy to work at all. It loads, but closes as soon as I try to open the dvd. Anyone else getting similar problems, or, more to the point, does anyone know how to fix it?

I've decided to make the plunge and switch to linux! Actually, I plan to dualboot Win XP and Ubuntu 10.04. I figure I might as well keep XP for a few games and for syncing my iPod nano with iTunes.I want to set up my computer so that my music library on my windows partition will be accessible to Banshee (or perhaps another program) so that I can listen to my tunes in Linux. However, I want to make it so that Banshee can't actually edit my files/tags (I want to leave iTunes in charge of that). I just want it to be able to play the mp3s and aac's (none of my files are in DRM format luckily). So I guess what I am asking, is can I make my iTunes folder on the Windows partition READ-ONLY to the Linux OS maybe?

I'm having an annoying issue with my display configuration.
Some specs:
Motherboard: MSI 760gm-e51
CPU: AMD Phenom II 955 Quadcore
MEM: 8Gbs DDR3
VGA: ATI Radeon HD4850
ATI Radeon 3000 (on board)
All four monitors work fine with two X servers ( 2 monitors each instances) on Ubuntu 9.10 with surroundview enabled in the BIOS. I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.4 and all i get is 4 blank screens. when i disable surroundview in the BIOS with PCIE as default display the HD4850 work great. I should add that on both installs i used the latest atalyst 10.4. It seems like there's something wrong with Ubuntu 10.04.
Here's the xorg.conf of the working Ubuntu 9.10:
Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "aticonfig Layout"
Screen 0 "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0" 0 1050
Screen "amdcccle-Screen[1]-0" 624 0

After a successful upgrade to lucid, everything was going GREAT (including FINALLY having surround output) until now all of the sudden music files won't play... When I double-click a file, Totem opens automatically, and it says it's playing, but there's no sound and the bar does not move across at the bottom. In VLC, the bar moves like it's playing, but there is still no sound. Doesn't work when I hover the cursor over a file, either. In previous versions of Ubuntu, a simple reboot would fix this, but that doesn't work with Lucid... Online streaming works fine.

I had taken a long break from Ubuntu, but now I'm back on it. I just installed 9.10 Karmic on my Lenovo Thinkpad R61i, and it's beautiful....except there's no sound.
I have gone through the Comprehensive Sound Problem Solutions Guide, to no avail. As well, I have searched the all of the Internets, and still have no sound.
Here is some system info:
Code:
tomdabomb2u@tomdabomb2u-thinkpad:~$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: CONEXANT Analog [CONEXANT Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
code....
I also added options snd-hda-intel model=thinkpad to the end of my /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file. Still nothing. I would really like to hear the Antoine Dodson song on my laptop...not sure how much longer I can go.
Note: Everything in Sound Preferences appears to be working, I just still can't HEAR anything.

I've just done a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 after using 8.10 for a couple of years. (I have to say that after 2 years, the problems I encountered when first installing 8.10 remain in 10,04 but now with additional sound problems !) I use an Acer Aspire 5720 and sound *WORKED* under 8.10 fine. Now I have done a clean install of 10.04 all I get are the bongos at the login then nothing. I can't play any sound files etc. The card is recognised but something is wrong. Here are the results of some commands I have given :
Code:
aplay -l

I've got a custom compiled kernel, just built on Lucid 10.04 from the kernel sources.System works fine, except for sound. When I log in as normal user and try to play a wav file using. The sound file is being played, but I hear no sound. However, when I do "sudo -s" and become root, execute the same mplayer command then I can hear the sound. My Sound preferences shows no input device and only "Dummy Output" as output device. On the generic kernel as came with the Lucid 10.04 CD, sound preferences shows different devices. The strange thing is: when I compiled my custom kernel, I changed nothing to the sound options in the kernel config file.

As my previous thread about compiling the good old Amarok 1.4.10 for 9.10 and make it work properly again was well accepted, I post here the script for doing the same for the recent version 10.04.
In the old thread, there are some really great improvements like a better wiki-patch: [url]
Code:
The ~/ before Downloads makes sure, that you can run the script from wherever you are in your system (stands for your home directory). Further, omit the checkinstall line, as this is not necessary in a script.. The sleep commands in between allow users to check, if everything went fine before going to the next step.
I can confirm the above script is working and Amarok 1.4.10 is set up correctly on a justsetup system.
And yes, I was to lazy too write a proper error handling^^
I didn't perform any larger testing.. Open the program an playback worked. My iPod worked also including artwork.
By the way: Because of self-compiling, a nice little extension program is working again, amarokFS (FullScreen).
That's the way to install it:
Code:

Ubuntu 10.04 is unable to set up my Canon Pixma IP 6000D printer. So earlier tonight when my wife wanted 2 recipes she saw on this am's Today Show, I had to restart my computer with a Fedora 13 live CD in the drive. F13 quickly installs my Canon printer and I am able to print the recipes. But this sure is a convoluted way of printing 2 short text files.to get my printer to work with Ubuntu.I've been using Ubuntu almost 2 years now, and love it, love it, love it, except for this one little thing.

Quote:
The new Wacom Bamboo Pen (CTL-460) doesnt work in Ubuntu Lucid out-of-the-box. You need a newer kernel module than the one that comes with Lucid by default. Its pretty easy to get it working though, you just need to know how.
First, install some compiling tools and header files:
Code:
Code:
Now unpack, configure compile and install it:
Code:
# I know this is the wrong version, but it's the highest available and it works
Code:
The tablet should work now. You can also add the module name to /etc/modules to automatically load it on boot.
He also says (and I can confirm) that the gray lines are the new borders of the tablet. A little annoying, but I imagine one could configure that, too.

I have tried out Lucid Lynx Beta 1 back in march. During the installation I was announced that support for bluetooth was dropped. I installed anyway, thinking it would be back in the Final Release. Meanwhile (between March and April) I reinstalled Karmic because I really needed the bluetooth. I can see in the upgrade that bluetooth still isn't available. What should I do about this? Is there a way to keep Lucid Lynx and bluetooth? Or will I have to stay on Karmic until the end of times?

Is there someone from Dallas, Texas, USA area? I've got a friend there with lucid lynx on a netbook - and she says something's gone wrong with it - she cannot boot. Maybe someone could maybe somehow meet with her and see if there is a possibility to fix it? As i don't really know what's wrong but I am on another end of the world and have no chance to figure it out.

I've got a generic USB keyboard (not wireless) that works perfectly on WinXP, the BIOS and the GRUB boot menu. As soon as Ubuntu 10.04 loads, however,he keyboard stops working. Tried different ports, still nothing. I haven't tested on previous versions of Ubuntu or other Linux distros. A PS/2 keyboard works great on Ubuntu except the one I have is broken, hence why I'm using this USB keyboard. Any ideas on how to fix this? It's the only thing holding me back from leaving Windows for good. lsusb:Quote:
