I recently installed Amarok v2.3. My Sony Walkman shows up under local collection and I can play songs directly off the Walkman. HOWEVER, I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how I am able to transfer songs or podcasts from my laptop to the Walkman (akin to the old system where you'd right-click on the item you wanted to play and select queue to device, or whatever it was).
View 2 RepliesI used Gpodder to manage my podcast downloads and it works well for my needs. Currently I have been using Rhythmbox to manage the handling of my podcasts in terms of storing and playing. Because I don't have access to radio (I'm in India) I only ever listen to podcasts and I play them randomly throughout the day. My needs are quite simple yet there are a couple of frustrations with Rhythmbox that I'm still looking to improve, so is there an alternative? I've tried Banshee, which isn't much of an improvement on Rhythmbox, and I use Quod Libet for music, so that one is out of the question as I want to keep that exclusively for music, not podcasts. Here are my problems:
- Rhythmbox does not remember whether a track has been played after turning the computer off (or maybe after library has been rescanned). As a consequence I end up hearing the same podcasts. Why does it do this? This is illogical.
- I can't stop Rhythmbox from playing a track that has already been played. This is available in Banshee ('Repeat Off' feature).
- When I remove a track from my library in Rhythmbox (right-hand mouseclick and select 'remove') it is only removed in that session. It comes back when I reboot the computer or rescan the library. Then...
- When I delete a track from my library, it deletes the actual file from my computer. In Foobar I was able to permanently delete the track from my library but not from my computer. Is there a compromise between this issue and the one above?
- In Banshee I cannot change the display of the Browser. It seems to be showing 'Artist' in one window and then 'Album Art', Album. Artist in the window underneath. This is a pointless display for me. Because of the way podcasts are generally labeled the most useful tag to view by is Album.
- In Rhythmbox my favourite display is where the browser displays Album (I can't change it from Artist and Album but I can live with that), and where the library displays Title | Album | Play Count | Date Added. However I can't drag columns like I can in Banshee.
To sum up - I want to permanently delete from the library tracks that have already been played; only play a track once; have the media player remember my preferences after reboot; give priority to Album in the browser; have flexibility in the library to display any column how/where I want. I have tried Banshee and Rhythmbox and need a mix of features that both offer. I'm hoping I've just over-looked some features in either player.
How do you tell rhythmbox that podcasts already downloaded outside the program are in fact podcasts? Mine are mostly just mp3 files and it doesn't seem possible to drag and drop them into the podcast section but I also can't find anything in the song properties.

When I am on Windows and OS X I use iTunes to play my music straight off of my server, no need to copy files over to a local directory. But I have been unable to do this on Kubuntu. Every media player I have used will not add the songs from the server. What iTunes style media player will play songs via an SMB server?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI use Rhythmbox to transfer songs to my iPod (nano 1st gen). I installed Mediatomb the other day so I could stream music and video on my PS3 (which is awesome btw). Unfortunately, using Mediatomb my PS3 would only find a small portion of my music collection.So I ran Code:sudo nautilus then right clicked on my music folder, and changed the Group category to "Create and delete files" under the Permissions tab. After, my PS3 found my entire music collection. Great. But now in Rhythmbox I get an error about the mp3 files being read-only and can't transfer them to my iPod I've tried reversing the steps (with and without 'sudo'), but no luck. Under the File Access section of Permissions, I can never change anything (like to "read only" or "read and write"). No matter what I choose it always stays at "---"
View 2 Replies View RelatedAs most do now my local library has a decent catalog of audiobooks, which I would like to be able to listen to on my iPod. These books can be downloaded only by using Overdrive Media Console (which is available only for Windows and Mac, and also requires Windows Media Player to work!) and iTunes if you want to transfer to an iPod.
I've searched around for Linux friendly solutions. They fall into two categories, try Wine/virtual machine/dual boot to run the required software, or give up. But pretty much everything I have found is about four years old now. Has anything changed in the last few years, or is this still pretty much the way things are? At the moment I use my girlfriend's Vista computer to download books, but I would like to be as Windows free as possible, and able to do it on my own computer.
Can anyone offer advice for being able to download audiobooks and put them on an iPod, with a minimum of non-Linux software? Relatedly, I would also be quite happy to replace the iPod firmware with Rockbox, but from what I can tell that would make library audiobooks even less accessible (so asking if this is an option is like asking for $10 after being refused $1).
I'm having a problem with 2 of my MP3 players being readonly, so I can't put songs on and delete song. I'm having the same problem in windoze too.
View 6 Replies View RelatedLet me begin by saying that I'm a "casual user" of my computer (I'm a retiree who uses her 'machine' for email, looking up mostly useless info, & pretending to be a writer). However, migraines from beating my head on the keyboard in frustration over Windows eccentricities led me straight to Linux. Linux blows windows out of the water, IMO.
Except for Media Players. I have tried every one in Ubuntu's software catalog. Rhythmbox is the only one that works, & it doesn't work correctly. I use my computer as my primary music source, & have saved nearly 200 albums/CDs to it. I transferred my collection to a memory stick, then tried to transfer it to Ubuntu. Rhythmbox 'accepted' most but not all albums, but none of the downloaded music, & lists the songs in each album backwards. When I open an album, sometimes Rhythmbox plays them backwards, sometimes (rarely) 'frontwards', but usually, jumps around, plays a few of the numbers, then stops. Occasionally, it goes through the collection, playing one song from each collection.
I was able to transfer the entire collection to 'Listen' media player, but it doesn't actually play anything, & I never even got that far with any other player. I have a two year-old HP Compaq Presario desktop w/ 500GB, (300 to Ubuntu & the rest to The Dreaded Windows for some stuff I can't run on Linux). I began with running Ubuntu 10.04 on 'wubi', then installed it from a CD I burned from the Ubuntu site. Someone suggested I had screwed something up during downloading, so I got 10.04 on a CD (w/ "Ubuntu for Non-Geeks"), but had the same media player problems. Last month I upgraded to 10.10, but still have the same problems.
I'm having a problem with banshee. It's doubling podcasts. Also it says that three different podcasts have the same size and length as each other(which they don't) Unfortunately I can't download to test them yet as my internets slow till midnight.
In screenshot 1 you can see the podcast doubled when viewing all podcasts. However when i go directly into the Desert island discs feed it only displays one, which is correct(screenshot two)
Whenever there is a new episode available for several podcasts I listen too, and I know are available because Banshee downloads them , Rhythmbox will not update, even if I do a manual "update podcast feed". (Banshee of course has a different problem of not connecting to my ipod so I can't just switch over to using it) Sometimes I end up either having to wait for the podcast until it updates (which seems to happen eventually, sometimes a few hours after the podcast was made available), or go through the trouble of just downloading the podcast from the podcast website and importing it into the music library---a hassle. Does anyone else have this problem? Anyone figured out what to do about it?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI used to be able to say that miro is the best internet tv viewer i've ever used, hands down. But, ever since my upgrade to karmic, and then lucid, the videos i try to watch on miro lag a LOT.
So, is there anything out there that would make a good replacement? Or, better yet, is there a way that i can fix miro?
I just found out about this tool this morning. I was having trouble accessing a podcast that required iTunes to be installed on your computer, probably to access iTunes store. I did a Google search and found Feed Flipper. It takes the podcast URL and "flips" it into an XML RSS feed. I was able to add the link from that conversion into Rhythmbox and it worked. Just thought I'd share if anybody was having a similar issue.

Currently I'm using gpodder to download podcasts from the internet, and gtkpod to upload them to my iPod. I like gpodder, but I'm not a fan of gtkpod. First, I find its UI rather confusing. Second, it doesn't automatically find new podcast directories, when I subscribe to a new podcast and gpodder creates a new folder. Third, it doesn't show episode release dates, so simply find a single episode in the long list is hard work! Finally, episodes are simply moved to the iPod, but I don't find them in the Podcast menu on the iPod--they are simply in the huge Music folder.
Regarding the last point, it is in fact possible to make episodes appear in the Music->Podcast entry on the iPod. You simply have to put episodes in a special playlist on the iPod repository called (surprise!) "Podcasts". It is a playlist of type "podcast", and with it podcasts are uploaded as expected to the device.
In the end, I think I'll stick with gtkpod. All other alternatives I considered don't support playlist, and this is even worse than not having episode release date, or having to manually add new podcast dirs.
Running 11.04, question pertains to Banshee podcasts and Android:
I'd like to copy podcasts to my android phone through Banshee, but when I set it up to sync entire library, it tries to copy them, and some do work, but I get a bunch of errors for each podcast that say "permission denied." (see screen shot)
I'm not sure how I would go about enabling that permission, or if permitting Banshee to operate with root privileges would solve the problem.
Music, by the way, copies just fine, and the phone is detected wonderfully (it's an Incredible 2, by the way.)
I am using itunes on Windows to listen to different radio shows and I am interested if there is any application in openSUSE that can automatically read the link to the podcast as it is present on apple's page.I found a way to play the podcast thru Amarok but I had to convert somehow the link from apple to some xml that Amarok can understand. I'm thinking maybe if there is something more straightforward.

I ripped 2 music CDs for a total of 78 minutes, but K3b won't burn them to a blank CD-R. It says the free space in temporary folder is 615.5 MB, but the size of project is 691.5 MB. I don't know why the tmp directory is that small when I have 615 GB free on my filesystem. When I start the burn, it simply says copying, but nothing shows up in the progress bars. I am able to burn direct copies of CDs, however. After a couple of tries and a couple of successful burns of entire CDs, I tried again, and it crashed.

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen ripping a CD, Banshee produces two songs in my library for each track on the CD. Both songs point to the same file in my Music folder (so just one actual file). Also of note, one of the songs is always a few seconds shorter than the other. I can safely remove the shorter version of each song from my library without repercussions, it's just annoying and weird.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased an iRiver P7 media player which I am using with Rhythmbox under Ubuntu 9.04. The transfer speed when uploading files to the player is phenomenally slow - the first 50 or so MB reported virtually instantly then the speed immediately drops to about 12-15KB/sec yes KB/sec so a 3-400MB video file takes hours to transfer to the player. This happens with the internal memory and the added memory (SD card) too, althoufg it is faster ror the SD card. No other devices have ever behaved like this on this system (and I have used 2 different Creative players, a different iRiver player and numerous memory sticks). The computer is dual booting with windows (for once that was useful) and under windows it doesn't happen, the speed is as expected so it isn't the hardware. I don't want to have to resort to damned windoze just for this. dmesg after plugging in the player shows it identifying both the internal storage and the added SD card but I don't understand the rest of it:

This last message gets repeated lots of times, and during transfers it seems to be issued continuously and I suppose this is why the system is so slow because it is always retrying loads of times before a success.
