Vsync works normally, but when I try to watch video in fullscreen (be it ....., VLC or mplayer), the vsync just doesn't work and the screen tearing is terrible. I'm using the nvidia-nonfree 195.36.15 drivers (installed through the hardware drivers), on an nvidia geforce 8800 GTS 512 card.

I'm not sure if this is a bug for firefox, kde, kubuntu, or adobe flash playerbut every time I go on an online video site like ..... I see a lot oftearing. And when I say a lot of tearing I mean tearing when their is barelyany motion at all. I know that my video driver isn't the problem because when Iswitch to fullscreen any tearing that their might be is barely noticeable. AlsoI haven't noticed the problem while in gnome. View 1 Replies View Relatedi've got a mythbuntu 10.10 box connected to my tv; sometimes i want to use it to watch internet tv. owever, when i try to resize videos to full-screen, sometimes black bars intermittently flash across the entire screen. this does not happen when the video is in a window or on the web page, only when going into full-screen mode. unfortunately, on some of these sites, even the "large" in-page video selection is still too small to be comfortably watched from the couch.
i'd suspect it's something with flash, but a similar thing happens when i'm using skype inside a windows xp on vmware. black bars flashing across when in "full-screen" but just fine when zoomed up inside a window. and i don't think vmware video output is flash-based. so it may be something else entirely.
also, this doesn't happen on all internet video - i've only had it happen on video from nbc.com and nfl.com (i haven't really had the opportunity or reason to try many other sites yet), and it was only a little noticeable from the nfl.com but nearly unwatchable from nbc. yet if i go to videos, i have no trouble getting any of their videos running full-screen.
i have an integrated geforce 8200 graphics, and i'm running the nvidia proprietary drivers version 256. i'm not running 260 since its vdpau capability is questionable, and i need that for mythtv. i have a 64-bit system.
does anyone have any ideas regarding this? the fact that i'm getting consistently good results from videos yet consistently bad ones from the tv networks makes me wonder if it's something i'm even going to be able to fix.
As the title implies I can't use the fullscreen feature in a flash video because all the screen turns white &, wherever the pointer was, get noticed as a faint shadow. I can increase the screen only if using the keyboard shortcut <Ctl++> keys combination.Have Shockwave Flash 10.1.r82 add-on. Firefox version is 3.6.8. Ubuntu = 10.0.4 LTS.

I love the system to give up some vsync issues in moving windows, but i just can't get over video tearing. I'm ready to install anything, change anything, even do a new clean install to get it working. UPDATE: Installed SMPlayer, works fine but drops couple of frames every 5 secs or so (more annoying than tearing lol) is there any specific settings that can fix that?

I have tried with and without desktop effects enabled, and I have followed the http://tombuntu.com/index.php/2009/0...thout-tearing/ guide to manually set the refresh rate to 60 Hz. The sync to Vblank option is checked, both in CCSM and nvidia-settings under X Server Xvideo Settings and under OpenGL Settings, to no avail.
The files I play are MPEG-2 Transport Stream in 720p. Some are and some are not in Matroska containers. I use SMplayer with vdpau enabled. I've made a comparison of Windows Vista and Ubuntu 10.04 below:[URL].. It's not entirely clear from the video, but the end scroller is choppy on Ubuntu and relatively smooth in Windows Vista.
This setup is to be run in a public cinema, and the chopping and tearing is a complete showstopper. It would be a nice showcase to have Ubuntu in the wild like this, but it can't be used if these issues are not resolved.

After upgrading to 11.04, my screen resolution was reset to 1024x768. As the native resolution for my monitor is 1920x1080, I went to reset that. The resolution didn't exist in the Monitors applications, so I did the following:

The monitor adjust, but most of the screen shows tearing and doesn't update correctly. Hard to explain, so I attached a screenshot at 1024x768, working normally, and 1920x1080, fubar. I've cropped these images to get them to fit the forum limitations, but they still show the issue.
My monitor is an LG Flatron W2253TQ, my graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD 4650, although the manufacturer is Biostar. I'm using the default free drivers.
i was watching some videos on videos in fullscreen and after being idle the screen turns off. is there a setting to change this or do i have to disable putting the display to sleep in the power manager?----- edit -----i forgot to mention that i am using ubuntu classic. also, i disabled putting the display to sleep in the gnome power manager, but the screen still shuts off if the system is idle. guessing that the gnome power manager isn't actually in control.

Now I can't watch full screen video's online which is not the problem as it's always been like this with every distro I've used but now I can't even watch full screen videos in VLC, totem or any other media player for that matter, it'll either lag or completely freeze my system and this worked in Lubuntu fine

n an up-to-date kubuntu karmic I experience the following:watching a flash video with adobeflash in firefox in fullscreen mode, randomly the picture freezes while the audio continues. The video unfreezes when I move the mouse, the video then fastforwards to the actual replay position. Video card is nvidia geforce fx5200 on proprietary driver, I have the desktop effects enabled. Any idea what this is about? I discovered the effects causing wine windows to break (no window contents, no foreground, no reaction on mouse) when changing the desktops or minimizing them. Seems like there are some bugs in the window manager / decorator...

Another problem I'm having is that when I turn the volume past 60% using the sound applet on the panel, it gets very distorted. If I open sound preferences, I notice it is in the "amplified" zone at this point, so I have to keep it in the "unamplified" zone, but then it's not loud enough.

when i make flash videos fullscreen, it puts black bars at all around and the video is the same size as before. this is using Firefox. this is driving me crazy and NONE of the various workarounds on the forum work.

I got heavy video tearing on both my Ubuntu desktop and laptop computers. The desktop has an nvidia video card and the laptop an ati radeon. I tried all tips I could find in google and no luck.
I think I am gonna try windows 7 because really I haven't stopped troubleshooting since I turned to Ubuntu, and that's not exactly the way I wanna spend my time.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI insert my DVD into my machine. The little "waddya wanna do" window then opens, and I select "play in VLC." I then press the play option on the video menu (not the play button on the VLC controls). Then the VLC window turns black, or the part where the video is supposed to appear does, anyway. So double-clicking to get to fullscreen sometimes fixes the problem, but then I can only view it in fullscreen, not good. It didn't fix the problem this time, so I double-clicked again to get out of fullscreen. Then my whole display turns black and white. WTH? The display problem fixes on a reboot.
This happens on a regular basis when I try to play movies. My display is, right now, black and white. After I finish this post I'll restart my computer to fix the colors.Also, it should be helpful that when I move the VLC window or am going to/from fullscreen, I can see the movie for a split second, and in full color. The rest of the screen stays B & W, though.Also, for some reason, when I play a movie, VLC open two windows: one with the video, and the other with a visualization and a title bar saying "VLC (X11 output)"
I have recently switched to Debian and got everything working great except for one thing..When I want to kill some time by playing a game (in wine or native) in fullscreen it works fine except for a big number I get in the left corner of my screen that won't go away until I close the game and open the ATI control center.This is very frustrating and quite annoying. I am using a dual monitor setup and I have tried disabling my 2nd monitor when I play a game but that still causes this problem. Also I am using the drivers I got right off the ATI website.

The ubuntu version I am using is the new 10.04 LTS. I recently had to stop desktop effects due to a change in resolution larger than allowed in metacity. I'm currently running an up-to-date copy of Ubuntu 11.04, but I'm noticing some strange behavior with the monitor settings. First of all, I started investigating this because I'm seeing a lot of screen tearing while watching videos full screen as well as while the screensaver (lattice) is running. On Ubuntu 10.10 I was able to simply set the refresh rate of my monitor to 60Hz through the Nvidia tool and everything worked great. Now, this is no longer the case. I'm using a Samsung Syncmaster 205BW monitor with an Nvidia 8600 GT video card. They are connected with a DVI cable.The strange thing is, the default tool, Monitors, claims my monitor is "unknown" and will only allow me to select 50Hz, 51Hz, and sometimes 52Hz for the refresh rate.
The Nvidia tool claims that my monitor has been detected as a Samsung Syncmaster and is configured to run at 60Hz.However, another area of the Nvidia tool claims that my monitor is using a refresh rate of 59.95Hz. none of these solutions had any effect. I'm still seeing video tearing. I let the Nvidia tool re-write my xorg.conf file after trying these solutions.
I've always had kind of an issue with tearing in Ubuntu but today I got round to updating to 10.10 64 bit, and decided to try and do something about the tearing. I followed this [URL] to the word except on the line "sudo aticonfig -initial" where I had to use "sudo aticonfig --initial" for the xorg.conf to regenerate. It worked great to start with but after a reboot the tearing got terrible. The tearing I used to experience was multiple tearing lines at random heights that appeared momentarily and could only really be noticed in fast moving scenes of films or games.
Now I get just one tear line which starts at the bottom of my monitor and slowly moves up to the top of the monitor over a period of about 10-15 seconds. Once it gets to the top it re-appears at the bottom and starts again, and the refresh difference on either side of the tear is at about 0.5 seconds it makes videos pretty much unwatchable. My graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD 8500, and the AA on it supports up to x8 sampling where as the tutorial only says to go up to x4 (I am unsure if this is because x4 is the max for most cards or because for some reason mid settings are better) but both seem to get the same result. Also I'm using the proprietary ATI drivers and Catalyst Control.
