I`ve problem with my microphone on fedora 14 with Gnome 2. When i try to use alsamixer command there everything is ok. I tried pulseaudio and HDA nvidia sound cards, but microphone don`t work. How to fix this problem?

View 14 Replies View Relatedfirst off, I wanna say that Fedora 12 really impresses me. I am a longtime Ubuntu User and Fedora really suprised me especially in terms of speed. Unfortunately my sound is not working. I had this problem a long time in Ubuntu, too. Then I discovered that I only had to switch off Exchange Front/ Surround in the alsamixer and everything worked fine. However, with the arrival of PulseAudio I don't get any sound from my speakers.
I went through some Guides but nothing seems to work. When I play an audio file I can see the amplitude going up and down in the Volume Meter of PulseAudio. So I think PulseAudio is working on the application side.

The problem started however when I installed Skype which uses pulseaudio. As soon as I start skype (or any other application that uses pulse, HoN for example) the applications sound output or input does not work at all. If I have pulseaudio started in some way, applications that I suppose do not use it like spotify or flash player stops to produce sounds. Did an upgrade to Natty - on first boot, when I log in, it tells me I don't have the hardware to run Unity (not likely - it's an NVidia GTX460, not even a year old). I assume it's a driver problem, so I install the restricted NVidia binary drivers through jockey. That's the ubuntu way, I figure, let it do its thing. So with those enabled, I have 3d acceleration (hi, World of Warcraft!) but still no Unity. I blow away .gconf* and .gnome* (as I'm used to doing whenever something gnome-related goes wonky which, in Ubuntu, seems to be every single Ubuntu release) and absolutely no love. I log in and again, it tells me I don't have the hardware. I scoff at this dialog box as I fire up WoW and frag some orcs in glorious 3d. No, Mr. Dialog box, you're a filthy liar. How do I coax Unity into running on this thing? Or does it just... not? Switching to Nouveau isn't an option, as I need my games (and anyway, I don't think it was even in use originally).

I am having issues with getting microphones to work properly on my computer. Sound output works great but microphones don't. I've noticed when I tested mic's on the sound configuration it would act like it gets input but it would be choppy or laggy sound. Anytime i talk to people on voice chat they say my voice sounds like it keeps clipping in and out and they can't understand a thing I say. I have tried looking on google but any fix I looked at didn't seem to work for me. I don't know if it's motherboard related

In the others distros (Gentoo, Sabayon, Fedora, Puppy...) the mic run very good, but in Ubuntu i can't record any sound. I can ear the sound exit from the speaker, but with sw like Sound Recorder, Audacity and Skype i can't record the sound. I tried EVERY setting in alsa mixer/Gnome alsa mixer but I can't resolve the problem.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've got a Dell Xeon with two video cards - an nVidia Quadro2 MXR/EX/Go and an ATI Radeon 7000/VE. Under Fedora 10 Xinerama worked just fine, but I recently upgraded to F14 and Xinerama no longer works.The X server tries repeatedly to start but fails, with gdm-binary eventually giving up in disgust. If I comment out the ''Option "Xinerama" "On"' line it starts up (see attached xorg.conf), albeit with a few quirks. I have two X screens (:0.0 and :0.1 - one for each monitor), where :0.0 works just fine but :0.1 has no window manager - I can bring up windows on it but they have no window border ( no min/max/close buttons, can't be resized, etc). The mouse moves freely from one monitor to the other, but windows don't.The error messages I get when I try to use Xinerama are as follows. In /var/log/messages I get:

I've tinkered around with xrandr a bit but have had no luck - mostly the screen flickers briefly and things continue on as they were before.
Greets all and congrats on the developers on bringing us another great version of Fedora. My box has an Nvidia GForce4 MMX 440 SE 64MB SDRam. I downloaded and updated from F11 to F12 last night. Before I went to bed It booted to a blank screen, GDM didn't want to start. I decided to investigate in the morning and went to bed. The first problem I found was that the F11 Legacy Nvidia Drivers were causing a problem, so I had to remove those. I also did an update with yum to get everything 100% updated. Then rebooted, more problems. GDM did NOT want to start for anything. More investigating found that the culprit was this nouveau kernel mod. Well, I had the xorg nouveau driver installed and I thought that this might be one in the same so I removed the xorg one with no avail, the nouveau kernal mod still loading. Seems that they are different and one is used for the xorg server and the other is used for the framebuffer console. I had to pass nouveau.modset=0 to the kernel at boot time to rid myself of the framebuffer. GDM starts now and I have resinstalled the xorg Nvidia nouveau driver though I have not tested it as of yet. Is there a better way at disabling the framebuffer boot up then by passing things to the kernel?
Edit: I take all that back. Upon further tinkering, reading, and investigation. The problem seems to be two fold: 1) The legacy nvidia drivers pissed and moaned about permission so I removed them. 2). This one I over looked and was causing me most of my grief. I didn't change the xorg.conf video driver from nv to nouveau. I did this and it works fine now. It seems that the "Linva-config-display" And I am sorry that I do not know exactly what this is at the moment. But this would automatically change the video driver from nvidia to nv if I manually changed it in the xorg.conf file after I removed the nvidia drivers. So I ASSUMED(my big mistake) that it would automatically see the nouveau driver and replace the nv with that. I was very wrong. After I added it manually, I rebooted and it runs fine now.

Due to the miss of proprietary drivers from AMD for Fedora 12, I have installed a second video card in my system (a Nvidia one) for BOINC calculation. This card is not connected to a monitor.
So in the system I have this two cards:
ATI Shappire Radeon HD2600XT (256MB)
Asus Nvidia Geoforce 6600 (356MB)
The ATI is in the first PCI express device, the Nvidia to the second PCI express:

I've recently switched to Debian Squeeze x64 from Kubuntu 10.04 x64. Overall, I like Debian.
I have one small problem: I play Runescape occasionally, which requires Java. On Kubuntu, I'd use Sun Java, however on Debian it just crashes.
So, I decided to use OpenJDK. Now OpenJDK works fine... But I can't get it to work with ALSA audio output. I installed PulseAudio, and that took care of -that- problem.
Now, currently I have both ALSA and PulseAudio installed. For playback, it works great. PulseAudio is a bit laggy, which isn't too noticeable in Runescape, and for things like media, it seems to work OK. For TF2, which I play through Wine however... No. So, I set that to ALSA, and -that- worked right.
Now comes my main problem: I can't get mic input. I'm trying to use Teamspeak 3(proprietary), and while audio output works, I can't get any input.
TS3 lets me use ALSA or Pulse(along with a couple more), but:
1. Selecting PulseAudio lets me select "SB Audigy Analog Mono", the same thing but a "monitor", and "Default Input Device". None of those work, I get "Error: could not open the selected capture device". On top of that, in the PulseAudio control panel, I get zero level on the monitor, making me think its not setup correctly.
2. Selecting ALSA gives me a whole list of options... But they appear to be audio -outputs-, not capture devices. Also, I get the same error as above.
When running "arecord -l", I get:
Of these, I believe the first one was what worked on Kubuntu. Now, of note is that I'm using my "Line in 2" port for capture; On my previous installations I'd simply set its volume with alsamixer and be done with it.
That all being said, I need a solution to one of these three problems:
1. How can I get OpenJDK to work with ALSA, and thereby remove PulseAudio; get everything standardized with ALSA like I had on Kubuntu, OR
2. How can I remove PulseAudio lag, and get the mic working with that, remove ALSA and get everything standardized with PulseAudio, OR
3. How can I simply make my mic work with the current setup?
Any of those will do. I just need to get my mic working.
I just removed Pulseaudio from both Fedora and Kubuntu due to the way it stalls other programs from launching after logging into KDE. After rebooting Kubuntu, KDE sounds, JuK and VLC all had sound, presumably via ALSA.
However, Fedora has KDE sounds but no sound in JuK or VLC. When I launch JuK, KDE reports that the HDA Intel analogue device does not work. Could this relate to Gstreamer? If Fedora falls back to ALSA if Pulseaudio is removed, does Gstreamer require additional plugins? Kubuntu has "gstreamer0.10-alsa", but Fedora doesn't seem to have an equivalent.

My thread is both an information and a discussion/question thread. First of all the information. I have long searched for a solution to my desire for Rosetta Stone in Wine but could not get it to recognise my microphone.
Finally today I removed (uninstalled) pulseaudio. It took a few packages with it and I am waiting to see what effect they will have. But finally, by checking the ALSA Driver in the Wine configuration, along with uninstalling pulseaudio, my Rosetta Stone works perfectly. A great deal better than in my XP Virtualbox Virtual Machine. Stoked! For those who are interested I have Wine 1.1.42-0ubuntu4 installed, Rosetta Stone 3.4.5 and am using a Dell XPS M1530 with Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit OS. It's been a long time!!!
My question part relates to the removal of pulseaudio. There have been no obvious negative effects as yet, and from my readings it would seem there shouldn't be, however I am concerned at the other packages it took with it (dependencies). Can anyone give any further advice/info here? I know for sure it took the package ubuntu-desktop which when I try to reinstall it tries to drag pulseaudio and all it's associated packages along with it. Can I/we live without these dependent packages? If not how can I get them back without pulseaudio?
I'm using an Acer Aspire 5536g and Ubuntu 10.10 x64. I can't get any sound from my mic with PulseAudio installed and the headphone jack sense function doesn't work either - when I plug my headphones I get sound from both them and my built-in speakers. I don't have any problems with PulseAudio removed.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm using Fedora 13 and think this behavior comes from Pulseaudio. To make it simple, all my sounds are played in my GNOME session. What's making sense because it's where Pulseaudio is launched. So, when I switch VT (CTRL+ALT+Fx), all sounds from my GNOME session is muted. What's not the actual problem. It's in fact a good behavior. The problem is I use some VirtualBox virtual machines on other VT launched with the xinit command.
These VMs emit sounds but I'm not able to hear them because I'm not on the VT of my GNOME session. But once I get back on my GNOME session I can hear all sound from the VMs. What I want, it's to be able to hear all sounds played by the VT on which I currently am and not everything and only in my GNOME session. How I can accomplish that?
I've run into a couple of issues that appear to be related to PulseAudio. First, since I upgraded to FC13 a couple of weeks ago, I get no sound from flash on websites. Yesterday, I had a need to record some audio into my computer via the mic input. So, I installed Audacity, but it couldn't see the signal coming in, even though it was playing from the sound source. I did a bit of digging and found a note on the PulseAudio website that said that Audacity didn't work with PulseAudio. So, I removed PulseAudio, rebooted for good measure, and under ALSA, Audacity was able to record from the mic input.
When I was finished recording, I started Amarok playing, and I could see the progress indicator moving across the interface, but there was no sound. I checked the mixer, but nothing was muted, and the audio from Audacity was working just fine. So, I reinstalled PulseAudio. Today, I needed to do more recording, so I pulled off PulseAudio once more. I did my recording, and then tried Amarok once more without PulseAudio, with the same results. It occurred to me that I should try a website with flash and see if those work without PA installed. Indeed they do.
So here's what I have: Audacity can't record from the mic input with PA installed.
Amarok doesn't produce sound without PA installed
Flash websites don't make sound with PA installed
This all worked while I was using FC12 (though I never tried Audacity), and I've only had problems since I upgraded to FC13.
Pulseaudio setup. My pulseaudio was working when I was using FC11 and it stops working after I upgrade to FC12 using preupgrade. The system sees audio device and alsa is working correctly. No audio at all (system audio and mplayer) from Pulseaudio. I am using the onboard Intel audio. The verify from the alsamixer that the volume is not muted. I also tries all the combination of profiles in the pavucontrol and in some of the profiles, I can see the output volume bar is moving, but still no sound

I have just upgraded to Fedora 14, with some hope that a F13 kernel crash issue would be resolved. Alas, not, and I have lost audio in one of my sound cards. I am using 2 sound cards in my computer. The first one (VT 1708 on the M2V MX SE motherboard) is used for FLDIGI (ham radio program). The other one (Creative Labs SB Live!) is tied to a speaker/microphone. At some point in mid 2010, I started getting kernel crash reports (not sure which kernel version this started), and the VIA VT 1708 audio controller stopped working. The SB Live! card works fine.

So it seems to know it's there. How to get my sound back (and get rid of this kernel crash every time I start my computer)?
Due to the fact that with pulseaudio it is impossible to change the microphone/speaker/ring devices in skype, I had to remove pulseaudio.
After that I can choose a device in skype, but the mixer does not work anymore. There is a way to have a working mixer without pulseaudio package or a way to choose audio devices in skype with pulseaudio installed?!
I just got the upgrade for the Linux Kernel version 2.6.40-4 on my Fedora 15 x86-64 box today, and the installation completed with no problems. However when I rebooted after doing the upgrade, I noticed that I had no sound. I use an ATI Radeon HD 4350 video card, and the opensource ATI driver, and use the HDMI audio from it for sound, since my monitor has a sound output jack on it. I've booted into the previous kernel (2.6.38.8-35), and sound works fine. I've tried with the new kernel in both KDE (my default desktop environment) and XFCE to get sound, and it does not work in either one. I've tried installing the VLC Phonon Backend instead of the GStreamer Backend, reinstalling Pulseaudio, reinstalling Alsa, modprobing the necessary modules needed for the card, checking all configurations with the available Pulseaudio tools (paprefs, pavumeter, pavucontrol), checked the volumes using alsamixer, and reinstalling the ALSA Pulseaudio plugin. After trying all of these, I can still get no sound out of any application, and I also noticed that Flash video plays at 2-3 times it's normal speed after the upgrade. Again, these problems do not occur on my previous kernel. Did I maybe overlook something, or can anyone else think of something I could try?

View 1 Replies View RelatedSometimes, in fact quite frequently, when I boot up my system, PulseAudio does not work. ('Connection Refused'). If I log out of my normal account, log in as root, log out of root, and log back in to my normal account, this seems to reset Pulse Audio and it works again. Seems like a security glitch, but I can't be sure.

I have Toshiba Qosmio G50 Laptop and I have recently installed Fedora 11 on it, dual booting with Windows Vista. The problem has to do with the internal microphone which works in Windows but NOT in Fedora.
I tried to record a sound but I can not hear my voice and I also made a test call using Skype and got the same result. I do not hear my voice at all. When I made a normal call nobody could hear me.
I have searched a lot in the net for a solution and I found that a lot of people say this has to do with pulse audio and they suggest to uninstall it. I do so but nothing happened.
The only change I noticed was that, in Skype Sound Options there were more options to choose for microphone and speakers (before there was only one - the pulse audio server). Whatever option I use I had the same results so I installed back pulse audio.
I am trying to record using a microphone on a machine running Fedora 14. The microphone itself seems to work fine when plugged into a Windows laptop, and the Linux machine is able to play sound just fine. However, although I can record using the microphone (using arecord or audacity, for example), the recorded audio is super, super quiet. I have run alsamixer, and experimented with every capture source. Anything which had any effect (using arecord -vv to see the dynamic sound level) has been turned up to 100%. Still, recorded audio is barely audible.
I have run:
yum reinstall alsa-utils alsa-plugins-pulseaudio alsa-tools-firmware alsa-firmware alsa-lib
But that made no difference. I ran alsa-info, and the output is here: [URL]. Why my recorded sound is barely audible? My next step is probably going to be to boot to Ubuntu, just to see if it has the same problem.
I removed pulseaudio save for the libs, and now I can't lock down my desktop with ctrl+alt+l anymore. I can still lock the system with the menu (System > Lock Screen), but it's kind of annoying. Removing pulseaudio has cleared up all of my mplayer stutter issues, but I would like to be able to use the keyboard shortcut keys. Here's the command I used to strip out pulseaudio:
