Ubuntu Multimedia :: Cheese Don't Show Live Stream But GStreamer Does?
Nov 10, 2010
I followed the instruction in the cheese help tutorial. The changes inGStreamer to produce the live stream in cheese "try changing from xvimagesinkto ximagesink or vice-versa.", only make both fail if changed to xvimagesink.As suggested here it goes the log...
Cheese 2.28.1

For some reason Cheese works for the 1st time when I launch the application fresh but after I use it and I close the application, the next time I go to use it, it doesn't show any video from my web cam. I can see the web cam turn on and it activates the flash LED however I don't see any video. I reboot my Ubuntu PC and it works fine the next time but I have to always reboot my PC and it sucks.

I was trying to convert a flac audio to mp3 using soundconverter & its failing with the error:
Quote:
GStreamer error: Gstreamer encountered a general stream error.
I should note that the flac is a rip of an actual Mono Vinyl disc. Am not exactly sure how that was done but I was interested in converting some those files to ogg & mp3. OGG conversion doesn't give any error.
Below is the result when launching soundconverter from the terminal & trying to convert the flac file(s) to mp3 (i just tried ogg to mp3 & the same error occurs):
Code:
$ soundconverter
SoundConverter 1.4.4
using Gstreamer version: 0.10.28, Python binding version: 0.10.18
using gio

For some reason while Cheese will take photos with my webcam there's no photo stream and it doesn't save photos to my /home/jonquil/Pictures/Webcam directory. Does anyone know of a way to fix this, or is there another application I can use to take photos?

my problem is regarding .asx live streams. Up till 2-3 weeks ago I was able to listen to [URL] perfectly well with Totem under Ubuntu 9.10.
Since then whenever I want to start the stream, Totem darkens and nothing happens. I've tried Mplayer and VLC as well but neither of them work (but that's not news because they didn't work when Totem did either).
I had a look at the recent package updates in Synaptic to see if any audio-related ones had been changed and I have downgraded libaudiofile0 (to version 0.2.6-7ubuntu2) and gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad (to version 0.10.14-4ubuntu1). The problem still remained, so I updated them again.
The radio chanel works perfectly under Windows, and other .asx streams (for example [URL]) are working fine with Totem in Ubuntu.

I'd love to listen to a local radio station while working, but my problem is I can't seem to stream it at all.
The link is [URL], and when I click on the Live Radio link, it leads me to [URL] which contains a player which wouldn't load. On viewing its source, I saw the following:
Code:

I am trying to stream a video between two Ubuntu 9.04 stations using GStreamer. The following code is run on the emitting machine: Code: gst-launch videotestsrc ! queue ! ffenc_mjpeg ! udpsink port=5000 host=192.168.1.100 -v And the following on the receiving machine with IP 192.168.1.100: Code: gst-launch udpsrc port=5000 caps="image/jpeg, width=320, height=240, framerate=30/1" ! queue ! ffdec_mjpeg ! ximagesink sync=true -v Whatever the order I'm running them (emit first or receive first), I'm getting the following error once both are connected (I can see the Ethernet lights blinking):

I've been trying to get soundconverter to work on ubuntu 10.10, I've checked I've got all the restricted packages installed, gone into synaptic and installed a bunch of gstreamer stuff, downloaded and compiled the latest version of soundconverter but whatever I do, the following happens:
1. open soundconverter
2. open file (wav)
3. set to convert to mp3 (default)
4. Click convert and instantly get the ever so helpful "general stream error" message!

Hello. I use dvd::rip 0.98.10 to create .wav sound files from DVDs and then play them in Totem Movie Player 2.28.2 (using GStreamer 0.10.25) mainly because I like the visualizations. It always used to work, but a recent batch will not play. I get: GStreamer encountered a general stream error. I probably used a more recent version of dvd::rip for the ones which don't play. Both MPlayer and VLC Media player plays them without a problem and older rips play fine in Totem too. The Audio/Video properties of a 'faulty' file (as shown in Nautilus) are greyed out for codec, channels etc., whereas a 'good' file shows Audio properties as Uncompressed 16-bit PCM audio etc., but running soxi on a good or bad file gives the same (good) results. I'd like to get this working, without doing anything to the .wavs preferably, so I guess I need to do something to Gstreamer, but I'm really not sure how to proceed. I'm using Linux Mint 8 64bit (rt kernel) and very nice it is too.

I am trying to demux a set of VOB's from a DVD. I want to be able to extract any video/audio/subtitle/closed caption stream to a raw file. Then I want to wrap the streams that I want into an MKV file. (Probably the video, best quality audio, and all of the subtitles. But who knows, maybe all the streams...) To extract the mpeg2 video from the VOB (which I pulled off the DVD using vobcopy) I am trying to use this command:
Code:
$ ffmpeg -i VTS_01_1.VOB -an -sn -vcodec copy -f rawvideo output.mpeg
The problem is, that when I open output.mpeg in something like VLC, the subtitles are still there. I can turn them on/off, but I don't understand why they are there. FYI: if I do -f mpeg2video, I get the same exact output, checked with an md5sum.
Here is a sample output:
Code:
$ ffmpeg -i VTS_01_1.VOB -an -sn -vcodec copy -f rawvideo output.mpeg

Zoneminder seems to start fine but I can't get it to stream video.

That's what I get when I try to view. I'm not sure if there is a log file I can check to see if there is an error.

I just tried Cheese on my netbook after upgrading to 10.10. And is barely functional, since it's too slow. I know a netbook is not very fast, but it should be fast enough for this.
Is there any settings or anything that might fix this?

Trying to stream a live video feed from Rock am Ring which is available via the German SWR3 TV website. Trouble is, I am in the UK and it seems to only be avaialable to German IP addresses. Have tried various German web proxies, but to no avail. I suspect the service provider knows about them all and is stopping them also. Getting the error from the server, Server Error The connection to the streaming server has been disconnected. Any networking gurus out there who may know a way around this.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop with a built-in webcam. I installed Cheese months ago and it worked fine then -- pics, videos, the works.
Now, after some updates recommended by Canonical, Cheese is telling me that it can't find the webcam. I tried dumping it an reinstalling, but to no avail.
Anyone out there know what's going on? Did the updates knock out a hardware driver?

I've been trying for a while now to capture videos with my webcam of my samsung n110 netbook, I am running ubuntu 10.4 and cheese 2.30.1. I can take pictures fine, with effects and everything but when I press "start recording" the webcam seems to turn off or all I see is a black image, then when I press stop recording the camera picture comes back on and then the program freezes. I've tried turning down the resolution, I've tried all the possibilities in gstreamer-properties but nothing helped so far running from terminal didn't give me a clue on what the problem might be either. I would like cheese to work to have photo and video in one program but if someone has a good program to capture video I am willing to try it out.
