Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can't Boot After Uninstalling ATI Driver
Feb 14, 2011
I've installed proprietary drivers from ATI (downloaded from the site of AMD) and then I uninstalled them simply by launching the script fglrx-uninstall.sh located in /usr/share/ati/. After reboot the system hang at the loading stage! I can't imagine to reinstall all my system from the start!

I recently swapped a hard drive from another computer I was using. The previous computer had nVidia video card (i think it was 9500? something like that), and the new computer has an ATI Radeon 4200 HD video card. Now, when I boot it up on my new comp using the same hard drive, I get a black screen and my monitor just switches from digital, analog, hdmi. I'm guessing that the video card drivers are still installed, but I cannot switch back the hard drive since my other comp is far away from where I live. If I boot up with ubuntu CD however, it loads fine.
I have many important files on the previous install though, and I'm not sure how to get to it. I wouldnt mind reinstalling ubuntu as long as I can get those files back.

I installed the proprietary nVidia driver on my Fedora 14 x86_64 laptop, but then went back to the nouveau driver. Now System Monitor won't launch. From the command line I get:
$ ksysguard
ksysguard: error while loading shared libraries: libnvidia-tls.so.260.19.21: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I reinstalled it, which went without error, but I still get the same error as above. I also tried installing libnvidia-tls, but yum just said there is no such package. Of course, the package is part of the nVidia proprietary driver package, but I don't want to reinstall that. I have the KDE desktop installed, but normally I boot to Gnome. How can I get ksysguard to run again?

I installed openSuse 11.2 64bit (DVD version). Later I installed the graphic card driver. Then I noticed that it's not working well due to an improper installation (didn't use the manual that you provided here). So I uninstalled the driver. Then, after reboot, instead of a regular desktop, I get a CLI and I'm requested to enter my login information. But in the boot menu, if I enter to the failsafe option, then everything works fine. How can I change the CLI to the regular desktop?

I was possibly overzealous in uninstalling packages using deborphan. I uninstalled various libraries and progams that I don't use (ppp, gimp, etc.), but I must have touched something useful, since the machine will no longer boot.
I thought this might cause a few problems, but expected to be able to recover, at least using the Recovery Mode. This isn't the case, sadly.
The main symptom is an infinite boot process, even using the recovery-mode boot. Things proceed as normal (grub screen, few lines of startup messages), but then a ton of text starts pouring onto the screen. It scrolls much too fast to read, and the Pause/Break key won't stop it. I do notice that there is a lot of talk about devices and udev, but can't make out more than that. The text doesn't obviously repeat, so I tried just waiting it out, but gave up after a couple hours.

I have Ubuntu 9.04 currently installed on my HP computer. Now, per my comment and question, which was never answered... I cannot see the login screen, but see the bios and splash screens. I have tried various work arounds, to get the screen to come back, but seemed to fail with every command at the prompt. Main answer from the prompt... "Cannot open display."This is the same exact monitor that works in Windows XP, without fail. Now that I need Windows to deal with Video applications, Windows MUST stay on this PC... or I don't get paid. I use Ubuntu for audio and all other applications.
Here's the issue...I can see the screen with Ubuntu's 11.04 disk, testing the new version. I'm able to go into "monitors" and adjust the resolution to fit the screen. This same thing cannot be done in 9.04.I'm trying to replace 9.04 with 11.04. However, the dual boot install wants to install it next to 9.04... and not over it. I also need to keep Windows. Now how do I accomplish keeping Windows XP and overwriting Ubuntu 9.04? I am confused by the partitions, and when I only Keep that Green "(NTFS)" part, or simply take one partition away, "there is no set root" comes up.I cannot install Windows after Ubuntu, because the Computer Manufacturer (HP...aka trash PC company) will not let me keep any other operating systems on it, and will use the whole drive.

I bought a new NVIDIA GeForce 6600GT video card for this PC recently and now whenever I boot Ubuntu 9.10 Live I can't change the screen resolution from 640 X 480. I get this message to the effect that the driver is restricted and not free software. When I try to download it and use it it says I can only activate it after a reboot, but I guess it means after rebooting an installation of Ubuntu, not the live cd since it never takes.
Ubuntu recommends NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver 185, so I went to NVIDIA's web site and downloaded NVIDIA-Linux-x86-185.18.36-pkg1.run (and NVIDIA-Linux-x86-190.53-pkg1.run since I think it's the newest, at least when I enter GeForce 6 Series and Linux 32-bit in the driver download search it's what comes up). I noticed that at the beginning menu of the Ubuntu 9.10 Live cd, when you press F4, the option to load from a driver disk is there. I was hoping this means I could just put one or both of the above files on a cd, insert it into the other disk drive and select that option.

I just bought a new Club 3D (ATI) Radeon HD 3450 (8xAGP) graphics card, but received with it some problems. My Ubuntu 10.04 installation would not boot any more. It just gave a blank screen while caps- and scroll lock were flashing on the keyboard.
I then installed 11.04 which works fine except being unable to play even 720p video smoothly (the card should be able to play at least 1080p). When I enable the restricted driver ("ATI/AMD proprietary FLGRX graphics driver") and restart, the system will not boot. It gets to the point where it displays the "ubuntu" sign with the five dots below (where the dots normally change color one at a time), they all change color immediately and then the system freezes.
I realized when I received the card that it requires a power supply of 300 W, whereas the one in my PC is only 240 W. Could this cause the explained behaviour? I am not too happy about changing the power supply, unless there is real reason to think that this is the source of the problems, since I know myself well enough to know that I will probably break something in the process.

I'm running 10.10 from an 8GB USB flash drive with persistence to see if I can get it working the way I need it before I can completely transition from Windows. I have an onboard ATI Radeon HD3300 running dual monitors which is on the list of supported devices for the FGLRX driver package, but I've encountered multiple issues.
First, when I chose to activate it from the Add'l Drivers dialog, it gave an error: "SystemError: installArchives() failed". I found a forum where someone had suggested opening the Terminal and giving the following commands:sudo aticonfig --initialfollowed bysudo rebootWhen my system rebooted, the Ubuntu screen showed "Ubuntu 10.10" in a plain font instead of the Ubuntu graphical logo, and then it quickly displays an error in a dark-colored font and then the screen flickers several times before stopping at a full-screen terminal. I have never used Linux before, so I don't know any commands at all or even what to do from here. I just want the dual screens to work and have the correct resolution.
Am I going to have to format and reload my flash drive again?

I've just installed Ubuntu after my windows os became completely infested with trojans and viruses. How do I get rid off windows? I can't get rid off the viruses because I can't install an anitvirus for some reason. It's still there when I start up the computer. I don't think I'm using grub, though I'm not completely sure. Is there a way to verify this? On a similar note, can the trojans and virus affect on windows affect ubuntu?

I've been searching for an hour or so and can't seem to find a concrete answer. My endgame is having Ubuntu successfully installed (either 9.10 or 10.04) with a fully working Ati 4870x2. I desperately need some help on finding the proper configuration of OS version and driver version. I installed 10.04 with the 10.3 driver package from ATI's site and it was a no go - I had nothing but problems.
I would like to have full 3d acceleration so I can play some games through Wine. This is a powerful card - I know ATI doesn't have a great reputation in the Linux world but I really hope there is a driver version I can install to get some good results. The rest of my specs are in my signature I need to install 64 bit Ubuntu to make use all of the system and video ram.

i installed the new beta 10.04 and it seemed right after the install and update that both nvidia hardware drivers were automatically install together. i deactivated both drivers. one driver showed the nvidia 173 driver and the other one showed "current" nvidia driver.
after a restart i then tried to activate the 173 driver. system required a restart. so i did. system booted to a black screen. i believe its at the desktop but i am unable to see it. i tried to hit esc at the boot screen to enter the grub menu but that didnt work.

I have a problem with Opera 11.10. I can't seem to uninstall it. There is no package related to it in Synaptics Package Manager. It isn't listed in the Software Center.
When I search for "opera" in Unity search it shows up and I can launch it. The launch command is "application://opera-browser.desktop/." but there is no file like that in /usr/share/applications folder.
Also, when I install Opera 11.50, then it installs separately and still launches 11.10 from the Unity search.

I recently installed 9.10, and when I was looking for information on it I realized that 10.04 had come out. I then went to delete 9.10, instead of uninstalling it. Now my computer thinks that 9.10 is still on it. Some details. I put 9.10 on it's own hard drive (if it makes a difference, it is an actual physical hard drive, not a partition). I was having trouble with my usb booting, so I used the install inside of Windows option.
I then proceeded to reformat that hard drive in preparation to install 10.04. I am guessing there are registry keys that need to get deleted, or something similar. I went to the add/remove programs in the control panel, but that didn't help. Also, when I turn my computer on, Ubuntu is still a dual boot option, it just doesn't do much. When I try to boot to Ubuntu it says something about sh-grub, or ch-grub.

I've been downloading some programs in Synaptic and adding PPA like it's Christmas, and two days ago noticed one of my wine games disappeared just like that, from the C Drive folder. Didn't think much about it and just copied it back in (I had a backup on a different partition). Also later that day wine disappeared and needed reinstalling. Now yesterday I decided to upgrade OpenOffice to 3.2.1 and went through the "tutorial" and uninstalled all the associated packages and installed the newer version. Gwenview and Gedit disappeared as well, needing a reinstall.
Now I log on today and Pidgin and Thunderbird are gone.I'm really not sure what could be going on, I mean it all seems unrelated. Why would reinstalling OpenOffice mess up everything else?So this is more of a nuisance than a problem, because when I reinstall the programs the settings are as I left them.
