View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased a netbook which does not have a DVD drive. I have attempted to rip a copy of some DVDs I own to facilitate watching them on the netbook. I have run into some errors.
First the setup:
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
Linux ub-desktop 2.6.32-25-generic #45-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16 19:52:42 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux
DVD Drive - HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GSA-4166B
I have tried multiple DVDs (Heat, Team America, The Messenger, Holy Grail). All fail in the same way.
I can watch any of these DVDs from start to finish in VLC or mPlayer. No issues there.
For ripping I tried AcidRip, DVD::RIP, and even fired up a virtual box of Windows to try different applications.
The error log shows:
Code:
In Acid rip I will get about 130MB (40 minutes) of the video until these errors come up. There are usually three or four duplicates of that and then the application closes.
If I try to copy the files to my hard drive from the mounted DVD it will stall about 30% of the way through and lock the system up.
I know the errors indicate CRC, but I would assume if the drive was bad I couldn't watch the videos.
DVDs will not play with any app., however, all play fine in Linux Mint (dual booting here) with a straight install.
VLC gives me the following error message:
Playback failure:
VLC cannot set the DVD's title. It possibly cannot decrypt the entire disc.
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd:///dev/sr0'. Check the log for details.

Again, I'm not trying to rip or decrypt anything, just play. All DVD & players give me the same results in Ubuntu, but all play fine in Linux Mint.
Normally I find everything I need either in the documentation or forum, but it's been months, and this time I'm stumped. I'm posting the results of my latest tests, so I'm really sorry about the length of this post.
I can't play DVDs unless they've been burned by myself or a friend. I had no problems until around the beginning of April. I was running 11.2 on both my laptop and desktop. I think an update changed something. This was before 11.2 was officially retired a week or so later. I wanted to upgrade to 11.4 anyway, so I began with my laptop. During installation I wiped everything from my hard disk by creating new partitions and formatting them. After installation I installed the multimedia packages using one-click (opensuse-guide.org, not opensuse-community.org, although I did read what they said). I know one-click is not ideal, but I was curious. The result was that I still couldn't play DVDs.
I did a fresh installation, just to be on the safe side. This time I installed the packages according to Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide by caf4926. But I still couldn't play DVDs, so I went through the thread Check your multimedia problem in ten steps. Then I ran mmcheck (v2.35). I tried a few times, experimented, and in the end did another fresh install.
In the meantime, on my desktop, which still has 11.2 on it, I found the file which had been changed and changed it back, so I could play DVDs on it again. It was in /etc/udev/rules.d/, 70-persistent-cd.rules. This does not appear to be the problem in 11.4 on my laptop.
I have again installed the packages according to the multimedia installation guide, and done the ten-step check and run mmcheck and these are the results as they stand:
I couldn't find a package called mplayerplug-in. I used zypper to look for it.
I tried installing the totem packages in a previous installation, but they didn't make a difference, so I left them out this time.
I deinstalled my jdk, but it doesn't seem to have made a difference, except that I get an error notification everytime I want to use LibreOffice. And I need it, so I'm putting it back soon.
So, these are my packages:
And this is what happens when I try to play a DVD using Kaffeine (since I don't an error message except from Kaffeine, and I've forgotten where my logs are):
And then comes Read error from: Error reading from DVD over the GUI.
And nothing else happens... I get no feedback from smplayer whatsoever. It opens, trys to read the DVD, and sits there. Even on the console.
I installed my DVB-T board and I can watch TV using VLC and my channels.conf file. I saved a copy of channels.conf as ~/.gstreamer-0.10/dvb-channels.conf but when I start Totem (GStreamer ed.), I don't see a "Watch TV" option under the "Movie" menu.
View 6 Replies View RelatedRather than adding each music/video file one by one in XBMC is there a way to just add a folder to watch and as you add music under it, it automatically shows up in XMBC? If not, is there any application that allows something like that? I'm looking for one central application to use for all media playback - dvds, music, videos, pictures... XBMC seemed like the right choice, but I'll be adding moves and music for a year if I had to do each of them 1 by 1.

View 3 Replies View RelatedDVD rentals are a lottery for me. I often have the problem of renting DVD's that end up being scratched. I'm sure this is a common experience: during playback there will be a section of the DVD that is unplayable because it skips or stutters.
I always clean the DVD surface but it often doesn't help when the scratches are bad. So I wonder whether there are any hardware tweaks in Ubuntu to help the DVD drive try harder?
I found this post "Guide to dvd copy and watch even when scratched" which seems useful but it requires ripping the DVD.
Movies will not play whether I use VLC, or Movie Player.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI want to capture the video from my sat box using an extra laptop I have and then distribute a live feed on my network so that I can watch tv on my laptop around the house. I want to use an old Dell X300 with a broken screen. It's not too powerful with a 1.2GHz Pentium M and 640MB ram. I was thinking of throwing Zubuntu or something lighter weight on it. I'll use a usb capture card that will support S-video. I am sure there are plenty of those that will be compatible with Linux. What I need to know is what capture software should I use?
Is there any capture software that will transmit over a network as a live feed? Is my laptop even powerful enough to do what I'm asking? This thing had no problem playing back 480p but capturing, encoding, and distributing over a network is another story. Are there any usb capture cards that use hardware encoding? Would installing a lighter weight distro be necessary in order to gt laptop performance boost it needs to handle what I want to do? And what of software to receive the stream? VLC should have no trouble connecting to the stream right? How about SMPlayer?
Is it a way to Watch Movies From Torrent?I saw a program for windows, a video player who can to play video from torents, who didn't downloaded yet? Is it a linux program with who i can Watch Movies From Torrent too?Is it a way to do that with VLC ot Totem?

Video is not appear with those players and can see only black screens. Sound works well. I think there are some troubles with codecs, But though I installed some codecs and restricted-extra, there are no improvements. What should I do to see video with this system? Those video files can be watched with my desktop;Ubuntu 10.04 and VLC player so I think files has no problem. Dell inspiron 1210 specification; Intel Atom Z530, GMA500, 1GB Ram. I am trying to watch tv on my monitor with mythtv. I had my card configured correctly. The first half of the Hauppauge 1600 is for analog tuning, so I have to select ivtv from the dropdown menu. I am receiving an error message stating that it cannot be opened. An hour ago It was fine. When It was working fine and everything was normal, I still could not receive any video on the tv. in mythtv. I receive a red screen. The coax cable is running from the wall into the card. I do not want to run it through my cable box for it seems difficult to configure a remote. I went to schedule direct and downloaded the correct guide for my region(which is the US). What could be the problem? I have searched forums and articles. I really want to use mythtv and cease using Windows Media Center. Does analog tv work in Mythtv. I am using the 0.24 version. My operating system is windows xp and I do not have a graphics card setup for tv-out yet.

I used to be able to say that miro is the best internet tv viewer i've ever used, hands down. But, ever since my upgrade to karmic, and then lucid, the videos i try to watch on miro lag a LOT.
So, is there anything out there that would make a good replacement? Or, better yet, is there a way that i can fix miro?
Ubuntu 9.10. I can still watch videos that I have downloaded. Whenever I watch a video online, no matter which browser, it crashes, goes back to the login screen, when I log back in all windows have been closed.
EDIT: It doesn't crash if I'm playing a video but on a different tab in my browser, I'm pretty sure this means it is a problem with the screen but I may be wrong.
I'm using a Samsung NC10 netbook. It has always worked before.

Im not talking about tv via a tvturner card, just tv streamings, like the BBC or this german one URL... type=null. The public german broadcaster allows me to watch their programms in their embedded player. Can I watch those programms in vlc or in other standalone players? Im also interested in the same for the bbc, cnn, aljazeera...
