Ubuntu Multimedia :: Audio: No Bass And Delays (Acer 4820TG, Ubuntu 10.10)
Nov 25, 2010
OS: Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop Edition Computer: Laptop Acer Aspire Timeline X 4820TG Sound Card: don't know (how/where to check?) Software tried: totem, vlc, rhythmbox (does not depend on software) Output: headset and speakers (does not depend on output) The problem: Bass cannot be heard, and "part" of the music plays with a small delay ("offbeat") with respect to the "rest". Note: I have it dual-boot with Windows 7, where the audio works without problems.
this is the first question I post. I hope this information is specific enough,

For the benefit of all other users i am specifying the steps i followed to get HDMI audio to work after a lot of toil.
Laptop configuration: Acer 5738 Ubuntu (10.04) Lucid Lynx
visit the link [URL] and read specifically the HDMI Audio section. Don't worry if you are unable to test for the sound. Connect the HDMI cable from the laptop to your LCD tv. This should be trivial. Make sure you switch your TV to HDMI input from its menu options. After enabling the HDMI configurations on your laptop using Step 1. Click on System--> Preferences --> Sound. Click on the Hardware tab. By default it might be set to Analog Stereo Duplex. Go to Output tab. Change the Connector drop down from Analog Speakers to Analog Headphones. Go back to Hardware tab and select Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output. Function+F5 would direct the video output to your TV. Incase you have a problem redirecting your video output to the TV. Restart your machine with the HDMI cable connected to your TV. With the configurations you would be able to hear sound from your TV. Have a blast! I have tried this with Acer 5738 it might work with other Laptop configurations as well.

I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 64bit on Acer Revo 3700. After a month of debug sessions and reading the threads in this forum, I still haven't got the audio working on HDMI. Strange thing is that, the HDMI works without any problem on Windows 7 (but alas, the 1080P graphics quality is very poor) The audio output is set to HDMI in the "Sound" settings. The audio is not muted and is set to full volume. I'm using Alsa version 1.0.23 with latest nVidia drivers on Ubuntu I went through the below thread:[URL]but it did not help me either.I've attached most of the command outputs and content of my ~/.asoundrc (as per thread #1670681)

I'm new to Ubuntu, but have some experience with *NIX (specifically Red Hat and AIX.) I'm not getting any bass out of my 4.1 Logitech THX setup. The surround speakers are operating fine. I know that the bass unit itself is working because I was using it with windows on this computer before I made the switch to Ubuntu. If I run a speaker test from either the sound preferences or the terminal, the speakers work but the bass does not. I ran this command from a terminal to help with the diagnostic effort, but I'm not entirely sure what I'm looking at:
Code:
wget [URL] -O alsa-info.sh && bash alsa-info.sh
Here is the output of the above command: [URL]
I have been searching for an answer to this question for some time now and can't see to find the relevant information anywhere.

I am running Karmic 64bit on a frankenstein desktop. I am using an old Creative Soundblaster card with the live drive front panel. Ever since I started using Karmic I have lost many functions, there are no bass and treble controls, and no other controls other than volume and balance. Am I missing some vital drivers?

When I decode an audio clip which contain 5.1 streams (the encoding doesn't matter - or does it?) I cannot find an option which allows redirection of the lower frequencies (from front, back and center channels) to the sub woofer (LFE channel). I understand that this perfectly normal and this is how 5.1 supposed to work. My problem is that my speakers are not full range, so they cannot reproduce the bass in the streams. What I want to know is if there is a way to do something like this: [URL]
Which is described as: Bass redir - Bass redirection. Route basses from all channels to subwoofer. Works only if it is subwoofer at output speakers. Highly recommended for systems with separate subwoofer. Basses are routed before mixing so basses are shown at LFE input level (although 'real' LFE may be absent).
I'm aware of the enable-lfe-remixing = yes option. It works fine for stereo, but not for 5.1
I use ubuntu 9.10 and my pulseaudio version is 0.9.19. The player I use most is SMPlayer (version 0.6.8 (SVN r3213)) and AC3-liba52 for AC3 decoding. My system is up to date.

I would like your input please. I'm using an HP DV7 laptop and the sound works under Opensuse 11.2 but without base. I have therefore updated ALSA to version 1.0.22.1 to make use of the introduced base switch for DV7 (ALSA changelog here)
I have tried these ALSA options but without any change / improvement to the base sound.
options snd-hda-intel=hp-dv5 and also hp-dv7 and hp_dv7
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1
Any ideas?
The second line stops the sound from "stuttering" but the first seem to have no effect.

I've just been setting up my new Revo with Ubuntu for use as a HTPC with XBMC etc..
Previously I had audio coming out through HDMI, but now I have lost all devices under the sound settings.
I was using alsa mixer, is there any way of getting this working again? A HTPC without sound is a bit useless!
I can't really say what I've done, as I took a few approaches to it, but I've tried to remove everything so it's back to normal. I think maybe it happened after updating some NVIDIA drivers..

I havev tried to play the audio with smplayer (not luck), vlc can play the audio but the pause button doesn't work so I have to listen the entire audio all the time I stop it playing. Is there any audio player capable od reproducing in the proper way this audio in ubuntu? No one of my video players totem, smplayer, realplayer or vlc are capable of playing this video: [URL]

Whenever I try to install any new software using package manager, software center or apt-get, it gets stuck at Downloading for almost a minute and then the download starts. No problems with the net connections-a high speed connection to backbone through a firewall. It occurs even while updating the package repos.

I have recently installed Ubutnu 9.10 on a laptop machine for my girlfriend, and she uses an HP 6300 series all-in-one printer. While things are generally good, the printer randomly delays output for long periods, often as much as ten minutes of delay. The delays might occur at any point during the output, that is, printing will often start, but then hang part way through a page. Sometimes, the delay is sol long (more than ten minutes) that the printer seems to timeout, form feeds the page, and abandons the output. Mostly, however, great patience results in output resuming after the many minutes delay and the page will complete. For multi-page outputs, the delay might occur more than once during the total output, and sometimes you get lucky and the whole thing comes out in a single shot.
my girlfriend is eying up the windows xp install disks and expressing socially unacceptable desires

I am having some issues with getting Ubuntu Studio 10.04 to work correctly on my system. Everything works fine except sound. I have a M-Audio Delta 66 audio interface and my onboard sound is disabled. When I run the command alsaconf I can see the ICE1712 card without issue. However when I run alsamixer the only option it is giving me is my HD sound from my ATI video card. For some reason it seems the ATI card has locked the audio to it with no way to remove it. I have reinstalled the alsa drivers for my card and can only see it through alsaconf. When I tell alsaconf to configure the ICE1712 card it says it configured it properly. When I run the command envy24control it says no ICE1712 cards were found.

Is there an application that anyone knows about that I can use to convert either an .flv or .ogg file that contains both audio and video to just an audio .ogg file (preferably vorbis+theora) without audacity? I'm fairly certain audacity could accomplish this but it seems like overkill for what I'm trying to do and the computer I'm trying to use does not run it so well.
::EDIT:: I should also mention that I've tried looking on google. I did find downloadhelper extension for firefox which uses ffmpeg to convert the files but I don't see any obvious way to strip the video.

I'm running ubuntu on an i5-650, Intel H55 mobo system. I have 4GB RAM.I was running Lucid (AMD64) very happily, but then had a severe failure of the Samsung HD502HJ hdd (the smart report is showing more than 1000 bad sectors, increasing everytime I try to access the disk).I have replaced that drive with a Seagate ST3500418AS. Using ddrescue I was able to recover all but 9MB of the drive content. However, with my /etc, /proc and /opt directories having gone missing, I decided that attempting to recover the installation was a lost cause so I went ahead and installed Maverick onto the new drive. As part of this process I created a separate partition for my /home directory (recovered from the old drive).
Now, having installed only a few 'essential' packages (eg autofs5), I've realised that a lot of actions are taking well in excess of a minute to take effect. For instance, clicking on 'Places->Computer', it takes approximately 100 seconds before the Nautilus window appears.According to System Monitor, there is nothing using any significant resource during this time - it's as though something is waiting for a timeout to complete before actioning my command. If I look at the processes in System Monitor during this time, I can see that the Nautilus process is showing 'autofs4_wait'.

I'm thinking of installing openSUSE-11.1 Gnome on a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo 7400M laptop because the wireless in Gnome is much more user friendly than KDE3/KDE4 in openSUSE-11.1. The idea is to give this laptop to my 84-year old mother and things need to 'just work' for her (she currently has a desktop running openSUSE-11.1 KDE3 that uses a WIRED interface to the web).
I refuse to update this laptop to openSUSE-11.2 nor 11.3 (nor other recent distributions) because every kernel update after the 2.6.27 kernel has broken the Intel i855GM graphics drivers for that laptop. There are many bug reports and none have fixed the problem for this Fujitsu-Siemens implementation of the i855GM graphics.
Hence I am looking at Gnome.
I booted the laptop to a Gnome openSUSE-11.1 liveCD and wireless is easy and works great. But audio is very very VERY bad. It is incredibly user unfriendly and it does NOT work well. I assume that is because pulse audio in openSUSE-11.1 was very immature.
I note these updated packages in the openSUSE-11.1 update repository:
Code:
So my question is, did the updates to pulse audio (in the openSUSE-11.1 update repository) fix the pulse audio situation? Are there ANY helpful views on this?
Currently my wife is using this laptop with KDE-4.4.4 (and openSUSE-11.1) so I can't just install Gnome and play with it without taking the laptop away from her for a while (note the hard drive is too small for a dual boot of KDE/Gnome).

to start off, i'll post the specs of the machine:
dell inspiron e1505
3.2 gb ram
1.86 ghz intel core duo
ati x1400 gfx
opensuse 11.4 kde 32 bit.
okay, here are the details: can't play any audio with amarok when desktop effects are enabled because the minute a window is moved, it will distort the audio. even when disabling desktop effects, some applications still cause this. can't play videos videos even with desktop effects disabled because of the same reason.
i just switched from ubuntu and when i ran version 11.04, i had to disable kms to do anything. i tried on opensuse 11.4 and the audio was flawless but the gfx went all to hell.

I'm having a problem with my sound in the Natty Narwhal version of Ubuntu, where my bass doesn't seem to be working and is coming out as fuzz instead. I don't really know the technical terms for what I'm trying to describe, but instead of the deep part of a piece of music, I get this kind of v sound in the background instead. I get the same problem on headphones or from the speakers, and turning the volume up or down doesn't make any difference. Alsamixer tells me that my card is called HDA Intel, chip ALC272X. I've already tried turning down the PCA volume, as I've seen recommended in other places, but no luck.

I'm encountering an unusual problem with GRUB 2. Whenever I start up my system, my BIOS'es load and do their thing, and then hand the show over to GRUB, which is supposed to not appear or do anything because my GRUB countdown is set to 0, but instead I get two errors like this that appear for about 5 or 10 seconds (greatly delaying startup) and then Xubuntu, the first entry on my Grub menu, loads: (I set GRUB to automatically boot my first entry):
Code:
error: no suitable mode found
error: unknown command 'terminal'

I regret the day that I upgraded my Acer 751h from 9.10 to 10.04 as the video has never worked like it should. When I upgrade the GMA 500 driver it always will reboot and goes into a black screen. i do not know how to revert it back so I keep reinstalling the system hoping to get it right. Is there a up to date tutorial on this problem?

I have been using SUSE 11.2 for some time now. I have 2 problems that I have been unable to resolve.
1. I like to use the Caps-Lock key to type capital letters every now and then. I turn caps lock on, type the letter, turn it off, and type the rest of the word (Yes I know I can use shift. My brain is not willing to unlearn ). After I turn the caps lock off, there seems to be a delay after which it switches off. This ends up making the second character caps as well. For example I want to type 'Who' instead I end up typing 'WHo'.
What setting can I tweak to get rid of this ? I am not sure what to search for, if some one has already asked this question.
2. I often select a couple of words using the 'ctrl+shift+ left / right arrow key' combination and attempt to overwrite the selection by typing in new characters. For example select the words 'abcd xyz' and then type 'a', which will replace the selected text. Sometimes I get this character '' instead of 'a'. A similar thing happens for other characters. Sometimes the keyboard will not respond for the first 2-3 strokes and the system will send out a *beep*. I have no clue why this happens. It does not happen consistently either. But it does happen in all text related windows. For example in a browser / kwrite / <Insert an application that can handle text here>

I'm running the latest version of Ubuntu, and have upgraded the NVIDIA drivers to the latest ones from the website (not sure if that's part of the problem). I've got XBMC installed and it seems to be working, but I can't for the life of me get anything but Stereo passed over HDMI, according to my Onkyo 606 amp that is anyway. Can anyone tell me if it's actually possible, or if they've actually managed it, to get surround sound playing over HDMI on an ACER Revo running Karmic?

I have an Acer 3280TG which has ATI Switable Graphics, intel integrated graphics card and ATI HD5650. I would like to -always- use intel integrated on linux and apparently I'm using the HD5650 because my battery is taking a major hit, only lasting 2h10 instead of 4h on windows. Plus, even though the brightness key commands work, there is no difference in the screen real brightness. I can set brightness to the minimum and it will be at the maximum. By the way, after installing the ATI proprietary drivers I get a black screen after the splash screen of ubuntu, to get ubuntu back I have to delete the X11 conf file.
