visit the link [URL] and read specifically the HDMI Audio section. Don't worry if you are unable to test for the sound. Connect the HDMI cable from the laptop to your LCD tv. This should be trivial. Make sure you switch your TV to HDMI input from its menu options. After enabling the HDMI configurations on your laptop using Step 1. Click on System--> Preferences --> Sound. Click on the Hardware tab. By default it might be set to Analog Stereo Duplex. Go to Output tab. Change the Connector drop down from Analog Speakers to Analog Headphones. Go back to Hardware tab and select Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output. Function+F5 would direct the video output to your TV. Incase you have a problem redirecting your video output to the TV. Restart your machine with the HDMI cable connected to your TV. With the configurations you would be able to hear sound from your TV. Have a blast! I have tried this with Acer 5738 it might work with other Laptop configurations as well.

I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 64bit on Acer Revo 3700. After a month of debug sessions and reading the threads in this forum, I still haven't got the audio working on HDMI. Strange thing is that, the HDMI works without any problem on Windows 7 (but alas, the 1080P graphics quality is very poor) The audio output is set to HDMI in the "Sound" settings. The audio is not muted and is set to full volume. I'm using Alsa version 1.0.23 with latest nVidia drivers on Ubuntu I went through the below thread:[URL]but it did not help me either.I've attached most of the command outputs and content of my ~/.asoundrc (as per thread #1670681)

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 with an EVGA nForce 730i Intel mobo with onboard HDMI. Video output works. Audio output does not. I'm trying to output both to a Samsung HDTV.
I tried booting to a bootable drive with Ubuntu 11.04, and no audio.
I've essentially tried everything in every other thread. I'm using alsa mixer, I've muted S/PDIF, my settings all have HDMI output selected.
sudo modprobe snd-hda-codec-nvhdmi results in:

aplay -l results in:

aplay -L results in:

Also tried aplay -D to play a .wav, and heard no sound, but also encountered no errors.

I occasionally use a DisplayPort->HDMI cable to connect my laptop to my AV-Receiver, however I only get the picture to the AV-Receiver, but no sound. I read that not all DisplayPort->HDMI cables support sound, so I tested Windows7 on the same machine and it transmitted sound over that cable just fine. So I conclude that it is a Linux driver problem.
So I generally wonder whether this can be made to work easily or not. Does anyone here have experiences with this topic, especially with nvidia graphics cards managing the display port? (I did find older posts about HDMI audio, but they were all concerned with ATI graphics.)
pavucontrol / phonon do list a "High Definition Audio Controller Digital Stereo (HDMI)"-device, but sending sound to it does not do a thing. Furthermore, my dell laptop only has a displayport, but no HDMI connector.

I've seen this problem on dozens of different forums but I haven't found anybody with my specific problem or a solution that has worked. I have an nVidia GeForce 8400GS which I just installed in my Debian box and I can't get the HDMI audio to work. Kernel version is 2.6.32-5-amd64, nvidia driver version is 260.19.36, alsa version is 1.0.21. Output of lsmod shows that nvidia module is loaded. Output of aplay -l code...
I feel like I've looked everywhere on the internet for a solution to this and I just can't find one. It seems that everybody is able to see their nVidia audio device using aplay -l and then the solution goes from there.

I have been trying for a while now to get the audio over HDMI working from my PNY G210 graphics card and mythtv but with no luck.
I have followed this guide [URL]
prior to following this I only had my motherboards on board audio showing up but I am now at the stage that I can see the HDMI audio and select it and un mute it but still cannot get any sound out of it.
As a side effect after following the steps from the link above, now every time I boot the computer up my on board audio is muted so I need to un mute it from sound preferences.
This is my audio config as it stands:
scott@MythtvFrontend:~$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 0: AD198x Analog [AD198x Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
[Code].....
The mother board is a an ASUS MN32-SLI deluxe and I have 2 graphics cards in it, a 9600GT to run the 2 monitors connected and a G210 which I would like to use to connect to my TV using the HDMI output. At the moment I am using the VGA output from the G210 to the TV and a separate audio out from the computer which was working fine but the audio is now always muted on startup.
I don't think it is an issue with my mythtv settings as I cannot get any audio over the HDMI using speaker-test (on board analogue audio works ok).

I'm able to get HDMI audio/video perfectly when I'm playing a dvd on mythbuntu. However, If I try to play the ripped version or any other video that is on the hard drive, I get no Audio?
I've checked alsamixer to make sure the device isn't muted.
If I use vlc media player I don't have any audio either. Is there a way to enable hdmi audio as default?

I've been googling and searching these forums and I can't find a fix. I just discovered that I have a headphone jack on the bottom of my monitor and it would be a lot more convenient to use that rather than the jack on my tower. However, when I switch to HDMI audio output I don't hear anything. I now it's not my cable because it works on my HDTV and throughput audio fine.
I have Ubuntu 9.10 with the Asus M4A78T-E mobo with integrated ATI HD 3300 graphics. I am running the official drivers from ATI, ATI Catalyst 10.3 Proprietary Linux x86 Display Driver, the latest and greatest, not the one from Synaptic. I know this is a bad time to be looking for a fix since 10.4 is out in 8 days but if anyone knows a quick fix that would be great.

I am running 10.04 with an integrated Radeon HD3200 card. When I set up the tv through hdmi, the sound works perfectly; however, when I switch to analog audio to play something else, the next time I try to use hdmi audio I get nothing. It shows to have good level through Pulse Audio Volume Control - shows like there is a sound coming through it, but I get no audio through the tv. The only way I can fix this is by uninstalling proprietary drivers and reverting back to generic configuration and then reinstalling proprietary drivers. I have to revert back to generic in order to get the sound working again.

I have a dell 1525 laptop with ubuntu 10.10 . Just made the switch from win vista . Everything seems to be perfect, wireless, video, ect. However no audio on my onboard hdmi port. The video is displayed perfect runs very smooth. This could be my lack of knowledge on ubuntu just not understanding what settings to change maybe no driver for the hdmi audio. I would like to add that the laptop onboard speakers work fine.

I have an ECS A785GM-M and the integrated HD4200 HDMI audio was working out of the box on a clean Ubuntu 10.04 install. After the updates and all, everything still worked just fine for a month.
Then, I installed a HD4870 with ATI DVI to HDMI adapter and the sound is not working (it works flawlessly on Windows 7, so it is not the hardware). The creepy stuff is that on Pulseaudio GUI configuration, everything looks right: ATI 48x0 HDMI is selected as output and when some sound is playing the bar moves, although there is no sound coming from the TV speakers.
I tried editing /etc/pulse/default.pa as suggested on this link, but it didn't helped. I'm kind lost here, since it looks that there is nothing wrong and yet, it is not working.

Because of some kind of mismatch between the latest X-server and nvidia drivers which crashes recent versions of the xserver, I've downgraded with a clean install of mythbuntu 10.04.
Trouble is, now I'm getting no sound through the hdmi to the tv. When I try aplay -l I get info for sound card 0 (HDA Intel), but nothing is showing for soundcard 1e So it's not seeing the card, so I can't configure it.

I have recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 64bit. After normal install process, it invited me to install ATI proprietary drivers (because I have an ATI Radeon HD4850 video card). Everything seems to work out of the box, except the HDMI sound. The HDMI video works OK, and also the normal sound using the onboard soundcard work OK. By my knowledge I think I have setup the audio properties correctly. Some screen-shots attached. What happens when I switch the output to HDMI is no audio signal on the TV. The HDMI works OK (both sound and video) on my Win7 64 bit install.

I have ATI graphic card with HDMI video and Audio:
I see that I have HDMI connector and S/PDIF connector on the mortherboard, I just have HDMI connector on the monitor, I have no problem with the video but the audio does not work, I just want to confirm that the audio should also go throught the HDMI cable right ?
Here is the output from the alsa-info.sh script.

I was running Ubuntu 9.04 and just upgraded to 9.10 recently. I see many others are having problems with their sound. I too do not have sound. I did get sound running briefly with an Alsa update, but it was muffled. In trying many other fixes, I again have no sound and can not resolve it. I am thinking of burning a new cd and doing a fresh install and starting over.
My lap top is an MSI GT725 US model with an HD4850 mobility graphics card. I dual boot between Vista 32 bit and Ubuntu.
Has anyone else had any luck getting the Realtek ATI sound working in 9.10?

I want my computer to be used as a DVD/BD player, and as of recently it has rejected its windows install and refuses to reinstall. Ubuntu 9.10 installed without problem, but when I select the X1200 (hdmi) audio output via the top right icon no sound comes out. I've searched this topic and one theory was that if i ran ALSA mixer the x1200 audio might be muted by default; it was not muted. I've also been told to update my catalyst, but using synaptics packet manager to download the catalyst control center, when I run it I get the message no supported hardware found. Is there any way to get this to work, or am I stuck with my speakers/3.5mm jack?

Ok, so let me first start off by saying I'm a linux noob. I feel no shame. I've been working on trying to solve my issue for a few days now and after much research I am still no better off. But I am able to at least narrow down my problem. The long and short of it is that my HDMI audio device is not showing up in Ubuntu 10.4 x64 edition. Let me give a few specs.
Motherboard: ASROCK 785GMH/128
Onboard video: ATI Radeon HD 4200
Onboard audio: VIA VT1708S
OS: Ubuntu 10.4 x64
Alsa drivers: alsa-driver-1.0.23
ATI Drivers: ATI Catalyst 10.6
Running the latest version of ALSA and ATI's proprietary linux drivers. I can see all outputs (including the s/pdif) except the HDMI. From my reading there should be a device listed on a 2nd card called ATI HDA HDMI aplay -l returns the following result:

Recently I installed Ubuntu 10.10 64bit and I have a problem with it.
I have a motherboard with internal audio card as well as I have ATI 2600 card. When I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 sound via motherboard worked perfectly.
But some time later it disappeared. Actually "Output device" that represents audio card disappeared. See screenshot of the Audio Settings dialog.
I made 2 thing - most likely that one of them cause this problem:
- I tried to setup Panasonic Plasma TV as a second monitor via HDMI output of my video card (ATI 2600).
- I added maven-backports repository (new kernel or new audio driver?)
Have anybody seen this problem? Are any pointers how to fix it? If you need any additional info - let me know I'll be glad to provide it.
