Ubuntu Installation :: New Install Suffering Long Delays?

I'm running ubuntu on an i5-650, Intel H55 mobo system. I have 4GB RAM.I was running Lucid (AMD64) very happily, but then had a severe failure of the Samsung HD502HJ hdd (the smart report is showing more than 1000 bad sectors, increasing everytime I try to access the disk).I have replaced that drive with a Seagate ST3500418AS. Using ddrescue I was able to recover all but 9MB of the drive content. However, with my /etc, /proc and /opt directories having gone missing, I decided that attempting to recover the installation was a lost cause so I went ahead and installed Maverick onto the new drive.As part of this process I created a separate partition for my /home directory (recovered from the old drive).
Now, having installed only a few 'essential' packages (eg autofs5), I've realised that a lot of actions are taking well in excess of a minute to take effect. For instance, clicking on 'Places->Computer', it takes approximately 100 seconds before the Nautilus window appears.According to System Monitor, there is nothing using any significant resource during this time - it's as though something is waiting for a timeout to complete before actioning my command.If I look at the processes in System Monitor during this time, I can see that the Nautilus process is showing 'autofs4_wait'.

I'm attempting to install Kubuntu on a new laptop but seem to be having some strange issues. It's a Dell Latitude E5410 with 160GB HDD, 2GB RAM and Intel Core i5-520M(2.4GHz). I'm trying to install Kubuntu 10.10. When I restart the machine and boot from the CD for an initial install it seems to hang for a VERY long time. It will eventually get to the boot options (after hours) but seems sluggish. Once the install gets going everything seems decent except for that I can't seem to get it to finish. I know the CD is good since I used it to get Kubuntu on 2 desktops and another laptop in the last 48 hours. I've also burned another CD just to make sure. The checksum was spot on. Does anyone know what I can do to get this remedied?

Whenever I try to install any new software using package manager, software center or apt-get, it gets stuck at Downloading for almost a minute and then the download starts. No problems with the net connections-a high speed connection to backbone through a firewall. It occurs even while updating the package repos.

I have recently installed Ubutnu 9.10 on a laptop machine for my girlfriend, and she uses an HP 6300 series all-in-one printer. While things are generally good, the printer randomly delays output for long periods, often as much as ten minutes of delay. The delays might occur at any point during the output, that is, printing will often start, but then hang part way through a page. Sometimes, the delay is sol long (more than ten minutes) that the printer seems to timeout, form feeds the page, and abandons the output. Mostly, however, great patience results in output resuming after the many minutes delay and the page will complete. For multi-page outputs, the delay might occur more than once during the total output, and sometimes you get lucky and the whole thing comes out in a single shot.

I have been using SUSE 11.2 for some time now. I have 2 problems that I have been unable to resolve.
1. I like to use the Caps-Lock key to type capital letters every now and then. I turn caps lock on, type the letter, turn it off, and type the rest of the word (Yes I know I can use shift. My brain is not willing to unlearn ). After I turn the caps lock off, there seems to be a delay after which it switches off. This ends up making the second character caps as well. For example I want to type 'Who' instead I end up typing 'WHo'.
What setting can I tweak to get rid of this ? I am not sure what to search for, if some one has already asked this question.
2. I often select a couple of words using the 'ctrl+shift+ left / right arrow key' combination and attempt to overwrite the selection by typing in new characters. For example select the words 'abcd xyz' and then type 'a', which will replace the selected text. Sometimes I get this character '' instead of 'a'. A similar thing happens for other characters. Sometimes the keyboard will not respond for the first 2-3 strokes and the system will send out a *beep*. I have no clue why this happens. It does not happen consistently either. But it does happen in all text related windows. For example in a browser / kwrite / <Insert an application that can handle text here>

I'm encountering an unusual problem with GRUB 2. Whenever I start up my system, my BIOS'es load and do their thing, and then hand the show over to GRUB, which is supposed to not appear or do anything because my GRUB countdown is set to 0, but instead I get two errors like this that appear for about 5 or 10 seconds (greatly delaying startup) and then Xubuntu, the first entry on my Grub menu, loads: (I set GRUB to automatically boot my first entry):

Recently upgraded to fc11. Have nvidia working ok. Using kernel 2.6.30.9-90.fc11.i586 (not the latest). When booting up I get to gui login and see the background change. It takes 20 seconds or more before I see the login dialog box. After selecting the user it takes another 20 seconds before I see the box change to enter the password. This only happens at boot. If I logout and log back in everything is fine.

kdm starts (on screen 7) and I can give user name and password but on screen 1 is still this countdown. I have only mobile internet via (GSM / HSPA) and this is not connected when the wait is over.
I looked for a .conf file but those I found have no means to change this behaviour of the networkmanager. How can I set seconds to 1 or even 0?

Until my hard disk crashed I was running happily Debian Lenny with KDE 3.5.9. Rock solid, and blazingly fast on a AMD 1700+ processor with an 5 year old NVIDIA MX440. After the hard disk crash six months ago I decided to install Debian testing. Unfortunately Debian Testing comes with KDE4. The experience was horrendous. Instable, slow, dead slow, missing applications, limited setting capabilities, lacking functionality.
At the time I posted some comments on Debian and KDE forums. The KDE gurus blamed Debian, the Debian gurus blamed KDE. The answers I received included "KDE4 is still in development now, but it will be great, one day" In the mean time I replaced the VGA card with a faster one (FX5200) and indeed, the GUI became workable, but that is all to say about it. It still was slow. There are noticable delays between a mouse click and reaction. The system overall feels sluggish and contains many bugs. Even when I disable the graphic effects it doesn't become much better. In no way the snappyness of KDE 3 is achieved.
Almost two years ago I tried KDE4 (4.0 at the time) and I was scared. I posted some messages here and there, stating that KDE4 had become Vistalized. (Does that word need an explanation?) Two years further, and it is still on the edge of unusable. Last week I have installed Xfce. I had seen it before, but too many things were different and I switched back to KDE. This time I put some more effort in and got used to it in a day or two. Nothing wrong with Xfce, it is not even hard to use. For the time being Xfce will be the desktop I install on new machines instead of KDE.Too bad, KDE 3.5 was a great desktop. I am wondering whether there are more people who dumped KDE in favor of a less resource hungry bloated and Vista-like desktop?

I have downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 iso and created a bootable USB from it. After satisfactory live session i am trying to install it using "Install Ubuntu 10.10" option shown on desktop. The installation started properly detected that :1. atleast 2.6GB drive space is available2. is plugged to a power source 3. is connected to internet.Since last two days it is running and downloading content from internet. verified using network monitor tool. In two days it has downloaded 527 MB.My questions are:1. what is size of download which is required for successful download ?
2. I got pretty descent broadband connection (indian standard ). can download 700 MB movie in 3 hours), but why it is not using full bandwidth and downloading content at average speed of 5KBPS. However if i download some content from browser directly than speed is normal aroun 60 KBPS.So how long I need to wait to complete the installation ? Should I suspend this installation and install from CD

I'm running Kubuntu 10.04 and am trying to install OpenVPN as per the instructions here:-[URL]..However, when I try enter the following I just get a continuous "string is too long, it needs to be less than 40 bytes long" message.
./pkitool --initca I've had a look around in the forum and in google and can find a reference to this problem with 9.x but from what I can see this has supposedly been fixed for v10.04. Is there some sort of workaround I can apply to get this to work?

The image disk boots OK and comes to the screen that gives the option to try or install. I opted for the "try Ubuntu" once, but got a long list of i/o errors. Tried the install option, and same thing. The install did get to an apparent Ubuntu background, but never any further prompts. Is the iso bad? I'm trying to install on a Dell Inspiron 7500. Currently has Win2000 loaded.

I am trying to install rhythmbox-0.13.1.tar.gz in my fedora 10 for a long time but i am in vain I downloaded it and i put it in my desktop.Then i did this:
# cd ~/Desktop
# tar -zxvf rhythmbox-0.13.1.tar.gz
Doing this a new folder named tar -zxvf rhythmbox-0.13.1 is created in my desktop.

I have just upgraded from 11.1 to 11.2. Many problems! Here's the first. During the boot sequence, my system stalls after rtc0: alarms up to one month, y3k, hpet irqs. and before device-mapper: uevent: version 1.0.3 The system waits for maybe 3 or 4 minutes before continuing the boot sequence, so one of those two commands is causing the problem.

I'm trying to track down a longggg delay during OpenSUSE 11.2 boot. It's 1 to 2 minutes long.
1. I upgraded the kernel to "vmlinux-2.6.31.12-0.1-desktop.gz" a while back, and I'm "kind of" thinking this is when it began. It seems in previous versions (I came from 10.3) that the grub menu always contained the previous version. That doesn't seem to be true in 11.2. Is there any way to tell OpenSUSE YaST/zypper to keep the previous version and leave the entry in grub?
2. What does this message mean: "BIOS EDD facility v0.16 2004-Jun-25, 2 devices found"?
I haven't pinpointed the error, and there is nothing really obvious in /var/log/messages. The drives are there, and the network is up. I'm sort of leaning towards the new kernel. What processes wait 60 seconds? If I watch the console closely for the message before the delay, it can vary.

I have just made a clean install of Ubuntu 9.10 and after installing all updates, GDM is taking a long time (about one minute) to come up after a clean boot, resulting in a regular console prompt.
If I issue "sudo service gdm start" it does come up promptly.
What can I do? Where can I see startup logs to try and identify any problems?

After I boot up into 11.4, the desktop/icons appear but then there is a delay of about 20 - 30 seconds before the bottom-right task bar items appear. During that time, I can't start any applications. This happens on both desktop PC's, very frustrating and not present with 11.3.

I'm just wondering to know if I can download an image to install debian, that let me perform a full installation without wait so long to retrieve packages from internet while installing.I used before a CD image for debian 648 MB, and I can see available DVD images 4 GB too (not clear if this is due to DVD format or content) but I'm not sure if this actually means that the DVD one has a version included with the latest packages of the OS itself.

just upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04LTS and upon first reboot it gets stuck at the splash screen.. it just keeps loading over and over, nothing happens.I don't have the liveCD as I just did the download from the internet via Synaptic Softwarethis is what I tried:hit ESC when GRUB menu loads.. tried to hit "e" on the boot option and nothing happens.. I was told changing quite splash to nomodeset would fix it but it doesn't even say quiet splash, unless someone wants to walk me through it.I'm soo frustrated, I have tons of e-mails and documents that I need to save.is there a fix to get me back in just so I can copy my emails and docs and do a fresh install?

For a number of openSUSE releases now, on a periodic basis (monthly, it seems?) both my laptop and my desktop take forever to start. During this time, the hard disk activity is going berserk. When inspecting this with "iotop", a process called "preload" or "start_preload" is hammering the disk, sometimes up to 10 minutes.
The irony is when you research "preload", you find mostly articles like "drastically speed up your Linux system with preload"- I sometimes think it has to do with running VMs on these machines and maybe it's trying to cache those large disk images? Pure speculation, but I can't seem to find any documentation on this.
Anyway, I did finally find a way to turn this thing off. WARNING: since I do not know exactly what preload does and whether your machine becomes unusable if you turn it off, please only follow these instructions at your own risk. Since preload seems to be a very low-level system/service, I did not want to risk uninstalling it. What I did instead was:
Yast2 - System Services (RunLevel)
Click the Expert Mode radio button
Scroll down to the boot.startpreload entry

Since I applied these steps, no long boot times with insane hard disk activity has occurred and I also have not noticed anything else complaining or not working with this service off.

I'm a Windows admin who does part time Linux server installs. Most of the time I'm asked to deploy a generic Windows server, install a few basic applications and if needed some other applications like Nagios or Zabbix. My question is for long term support, or patching should I be focusing on deploying with repositories to install applications or compile from source? In the Windows world you can patch and update from Windows Update, but is there problems using 3rd party repositories for future updates? Would one of these locations go off line?

I switched to Fedora from Ubuntu about a month ago, and I've been very happy so far. But today I started the upgrade to Fedora 15, and something isn't right. I used the preupgrade method, and the package download took a respectable 30-40 minutes, then I was prompted to reboot my machine. I did so, about 4 hours ago. It took about 2 hours to get to the point where it says it's installing the packages, and 2 hours to get to where it is as I write this, at 116 completed packages out of 1634.
I'm pretty sure this isn't normal for ANY distribution. The machine itself is about 6 months old, so I'm pretty sure it's not a hardware issue. I'm considering interrupting the upgrade and doing a clean install, but I was wondering, is there anything I can do before resorting to the clean install option?

I keep hearing about how Ubuntu is supposed to be so much faster than Windows 7, but have yet to see any major difference in their boot times. I am dual-booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04 on an intel Centrino 2 processor with 4Gb of ram and both OS's take about the same time to boot. After I get to the bootmanager to select OS, if I click on Windows 7 it almost immediately goes to the GUI load screen with the windows logo. On the other hand, if I boot into Ubuntu I get a black screen for ~30 seconds before the Ubuntu logo even appears. Comparing GUI boot times, Ubuntu is clearly the winner, but they take the same time total.
Does anyone know what is making the long black screen or how to reduce the time? I would really like to show people how fast Ubuntu really boots.Immediatly before Ubuntu Gui starts, an message shows up for a second saying something like "Unknown adaptor version (2): You may experience some problems", it flies past so quickly that may not be verbatim.

I'm trying to fix a friends EeePC notebook (Asus) running a recently upgraded Ubuntu 10.04 from Karmic Koala. She used the update manager for the upgrade to 10.04 LTS and everything was fine until she had tried to install something from the Ubuntu Software Center (she doesn't remember what happened). After that, both Update manager and Synaptic stopped working.Update manager gives the following error:Quote:Software index is broken. ... Try to use synaptic for something?!...
Then Synaptic manager gives the following error:Quote:E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
