I recently installed ubuntu and installed amarok and tuxguitar, both of them have no sound. Amarock just skips all the mp3s i want to play, and tuxguitar just plays without any sound, no error message or anything. I ran these both ot of the applications menu, not terminal (I dont know how to run them out of terminal).
View 5 RepliesI'm on Kubuntu 9.10, using Totem to play .wmv files, and certain of them cause the player to search for an audio codec (wmap?) that is never found. The video played without audio after that. So I followed advice to remove ~/.gstreamer-0.10, and reboot. A new .gstreamer-0.10 directory appeared, but now, Totem will not even play the video. It recognizes the audio codec however. The video codec shows up as "Windows Media..." but resolution is 0 x 0, and nothing ever appears in the window. I tried uninstalling and re-installing w32codecs and non-free-codecs, and removing the registry files under ~/gstreamer-0.10 and using gst-inspect to rebuild the database,
but nothing helps.
I really like the two programs Tuxguitar, and Rhythmbox. Tux guitar is a tablature editor, and Rhythmbox is an audio management program/audio player.
Sometimes, when reading tabs, I need to find out if something just isn't right, so I check by playing that part in Rhythmbox to see if the tab is correct. I used to be able to do this a few months ago. Then I upgraded to 11.04, and there were lots of changes with packages and stuff.
To be more specific, Whenever Tuxguitar is running, I'll try to play something in Rhythmbox, and the there will be no audio, and the "time progressed through the track" doesn't change.
How to make it so that Rhythmbox and Tuxguitar can play at the same time.
Also, I remember that in the "Tools>Settings>Sound" options, I was using a "Realtime Sequencer" at a port which had "Gervill" in it. I don't have those options available for some reason, and I have no idea how to get it back.
I just noticed that after upgrading to 10.04 Lucid Desktop, nautilus no longer plays MP3 files on mouse-over. It does recognize the file as a music file as it displays the music note icon in the comic balloon next to the music note file icon when the mouse is positioned over an MP3 file, however no sound is played.If I double-click the MP3 file, totem is invoked and plays the MP3 file just fine.

For some reason, I seem to be getting audio glitches or hick ups when I play my mp3s on Ubuntu 10.10. Everything else works fine. Would this be a hardware or software issue?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've installed Opensuse 11.4 and even have the multiboot working (at last) and firefox running at more than a snails pace, but this latest problem is really stumping me. I suspect it might be a little more fundamental than just amarok and mp3's but that's where I see it.
So, when I run amarok it asks if I would like to install MP3 support So I click on affermative and, since I added the neccessary repositories, it starts merrily into updating. Then after a few files it his this one:
libqt4-devel-doc-data
98MB. It downloads all the way to 99% and then the transfer rate drops from the 120KB/s I expect to 8B/s for a minute or so nad then it just restarts from 0%. It will do this a few times before offering the opportunity to skip. I did skip and it did a few more files successfully then hung up in the same way. It seems like any file larger than 1MB will not download.
I've installed kubuntu 10.04 recently. I'm following the guide at [URL] to set-up the system. I've installed the kubuntu-restricted-extras package however I do not get any sound while playing mp3s. The sound system is working as I get the kde tune when I start up. I have tried playing mp3s in amarok, audacious, kaffeine and vlc. None of them work.
I opened system settings -> multimedia. It shows four devices and only the one which says 'ALC883(analog)' works in all categories (notifications, music, video, etc etc) when I click test. However sometimes I get a notification saying that the device doesn't work.
Another thing I noticed was that the mp3s play when Dolphin shows a preview of the file when it is selected. I mean that there is a preview part in the right hand part of the window. When I press play there, the mp3s play. But there is no sound when I play movies and mp3s in amarok, audacious, vlc or kaffeine
The motherboard I'm using is Gigabyte M61PME-S2P. Its an nForce 430 motherboard with integrated graphics and sound.

Maybe it's just an Amarok2 problem, but whenever another app (for example Konversation) plays a sound file, the audio instantly cuts out (in Amarok2) and will not come back unless I quit Amarok2 and restart it.
Amarok2 has only the options - "HDA ATI SB VT 1708S Analog" or "PulseAudio" (which is NOT installed).

I have Ubuntu 11.04 installed on my Toshiba Satellite C655 laptop. When I plug my headphones, they sometimes work, they sometimes don't, but that's not the main problem. When they do work, sound also plays out of the speakers. The only solutions I was able to find were for earlier versions, which don't work for 11.04.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've tried walking myself through all the sound help threads, but I am not having any luck. Sound was fine a few days ago. But now I get nothing. I uninstalled and then reinstalled both alsa and pulseaudio... and their respective mixers bounce around like they recognize sound is being made, but nothing comes out of the speakers. sound does work in windows so the speakers aren't blown. nothing is muted to my knowledge... alsa and pulse mixers are not on mute. output is set to Internal Audio and not HDMI stereo, though I never know which profile to be using.. i've pretty much tried them all to no avail. results of aplay -l

View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter a fresh install of opensuse 11.2 I followed the multimedia guide to install mm-support. Sound is working, results in xine are excellent. Compared to 11.1, vlc now plays sound with drops about every second. To be more precise: sound is ok for several seconds, then a first drop appears. Thereafter the time between the following drops slowly shortens. After a minute or so, the drops come in intervals of about a second.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu to a flash drive and it worked all dandy like. However, on other computers the audio doesn't work, neither can I install a driver for the graphics card to use effects and (at least so it seems to me) run 3D games. Is it trying to use the same hardware that it did on the first computer I used and therefore hasn't installed the right stuff?
EDIT: I can 'play' music, so I think the codecs are fine, but no audio comes out, so I'm thinking it must be a driver problem.
EDIT2: Apologies, I checked the "Comprehensive sound problems solution guide" and was able to fix the audio simply by unmuting the speakers. However, the graphics problem remains.
One other tid bit that might be relevant is that the first time I booted up on a different computer it did tell me (in different wording) that the graphics might have trouble because it was set up for a different hardware system, so I told it to set up a new configuration and that seemed all dandy.
I am having some problems with recording with my laptop. When I try to record something through the laptops mic, usb webcam mic or with desktop recorders audio record feature all playback is too fast (sounds a bit like alvin and the chipmunks :L ) Is anybody else having this problem, or even better know how to fix it ?
Sorry if this has been asked before, I'm running 10.10 and had never tried recording before I upgraded to 10.04. I had the same problem in 10.04 though.
I got a 5.1 desktop sound sys for my recently built gaming rig. It sounds great. On Windows, that is. In ubuntu when I'm playing music, primarily when the subwoofer plays the bass, the speakers sound like they're farting and ripping phone books in half. Also, they get very statticy and sort of quiet. In sound preferences, analog stereo duplex is selected, if that's of any value. How can I get good sound playback in ubuntu?

The sound plays through from the inputs to the output, and it's volume is controlled by alsa mixer, but no programs can pick up the stream, including the PulseAudio and Gnome Volume controls.I have tried many of the suggestions to be found in these forums for sound issues, including removing Pulse, configuring the model in alsa-base.conf, and messing with every setting I can find.Here are the outputs from the commands from the troubleshooting guides:

I had previously gotten sound working in wheezy by installing the flashplugin-nonfree and flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound packages, after configuring my headset in system settings. However, now I can't get sound to play in firefox. I've installed flashplugin-nonfree, flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound, and pulseaudio, still without luck. The volume is turned all the way up in alsamixer, sound tests play fine, and I can play music in VLC without any problems. This leads me to believe it's not a problem with drivers, but with some package I'm missing that will allow firefox to play sound. Sound wasn't working in the default video player either, before I installed the flash plugin. Is there something I'm missing?
Also, sound doesn't play on Konqueror either (KDE browser), which seems to indicate it's a problem with flash and not with firefox itself. After removing the flash plugin and installing pepperflashplugin-nonfree to ensure the pepper plugin was used instead of flash, sound still would not play in chromium, so I reinstalled the flash plugin and still don't have sound in any browser.
I upgraded from Ubuntu 10.10 to a basic Debian Squeeze system today, and then added xfce4 on top, using only the packages I wanted. I've installed DeaDBeeF 0.4.2 for audio, but can't get it to play mp3 files. It plays musepack, wav and flac but it won't even add mp3s to the playlist. In the add files dialog, "supported sound formats" is selected as the filter, and mp3 files cannot be seen until I filter to "other files (*)".I've installed ffmpeg and mp3s play perfectly in smplayer and mplayer.
Is there something else I need to install to get DeaDBeeF to recognise mp3s, or how could I diagnose this problem? I've searched everywhere but had no luck.
My rhythmbox does not play mp3s. It says it needs codecs. not able to find any codecs for mp3s.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've Finally got round to retiring my old laptop which was serving as an XP based music player in the garage while I was working on the cars. Now I have the spare system I've been trying to give it new life with a stripped down OS with the intent of using it to play DVDs. I first tried cutting down the version of XP on it, however that failed, I then tried using ubuntu 10.04 but that was too slow and didn't recognise the peripherals.Then thought I'd give android a go as I had a disk of it literally lying round, but that wouldn't recognise the screen. Finally I've got fluxbuntu installed and it's really nice, now I just need some help trying to get it to do what I need it to.I'm going to have a go now at installing the MP3 and DVD decryption, wish me luck cause I'm a fat lazy windows user and not used to all this typing.Any other tips, hints or advice will be gratefully received.Yes I know I'm probably being overambitious trying to get this to play a DVD but if it doesn't work it gets down graded to MP3 player.
