Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Sound While Playing Mp3s?
May 16, 2010I've installed kubuntu 10.04 recently. I'm following the guide at [URL] to set-up the system. I've installed the kubuntu-restricted-extras package however I do not get any sound while playing mp3s. The sound system is working as I get the kde tune when I start up. I have tried playing mp3s in amarok, audacious, kaffeine and vlc. None of them work.
I opened system settings -> multimedia. It shows four devices and only the one which says 'ALC883(analog)' works in all categories (notifications, music, video, etc etc) when I click test. However sometimes I get a notification saying that the device doesn't work.
Another thing I noticed was that the mp3s play when Dolphin shows a preview of the file when it is selected. I mean that there is a preview part in the right hand part of the window. When I press play there, the mp3s play. But there is no sound when I play movies and mp3s in amarok, audacious, vlc or kaffeine
The motherboard I'm using is Gigabyte M61PME-S2P. Its an nForce 430 motherboard with integrated graphics and sound.

Nov 19, 2010I recently installed ubuntu and installed amarok and tuxguitar, both of them have no sound. Amarock just skips all the mp3s i want to play, and tuxguitar just plays without any sound, no error message or anything. I ran these both ot of the applications menu, not terminal (I dont know how to run them out of terminal).

Fedora :: Can't Open MP3s
Jan 21, 2011I have all of my music stored on my computer in mp3 form (except for a few songs, which are some weird file type, I'm not sure why, anyway). I just recently switched from Ubuntu 10.10 Linux to Fedora 14 Linux. I was able to open, play, and burn CDs with all of my music on Ubuntu, however on Fedora, it is saying that I am missing a plug-in for mp3s, however when I click the button to search for it, it can't find anything.I really need to burn a CD, so I really need a fix for this quick!

Jan 2, 2011I Updated from Fedora 9 to Fedora 13 several months ago and noticed that AAC audio encoder was no more available in Avidemux (I use version 2.5.3.3 for fedora 13 from rpmfusion repo)Unfortunately AAC is mandatory on the IPod (and probably other Apple devices) to have the sound working.I had faad2-libs (decoder) and faac (encoder) packages installed, but avidemux was not using them.After some search on the web, I found that faac support was removed because of legal issues.Some people recommend to rebuild Avidemux from source but this was a little bit complicated, and I found an easier solution.
In fact the only thing needed to add AAC support to Avidemux is to add the required libADM_ae_faac.so library in /usr/lib/ADM_plugins/audioEncoders, as it is no more supplied in the package avidemux-plugins. Searching for libADM_ae_faac.so on the Web, I found some packages containing this file, such as the ones from other distros, and the package for the same Avidemux version than the one I use but for Fedora 11 : avidemux-plugins-2.5.3-3.fc11.i586.rpm.

Jun 24, 2009Im running Fedora 11 x86_64. I enabled the rpmfusion repositories (free & non-free) and opened an MP3. The codecs installed correctly, but when I play them in either rhythmnox or totem, it plays but there are issues. Oddly, it depends on whether I ripped the mp3 myself (on Fedora 10, 196kbps CBR) or bought (play.com, 320kbps CBR).For the bought mp3s, the track length is displayed and the progress bar fills as the song progresses, but I cant skip to another part of the song. For the ripped mp3s, the player thinks it is streaming (track length unknown).
I thought it might be due to using ext4, but this happens even if i play them off an ext3 partition. The mp3s themselves are fine - they play perfectly in Ubuntu and WIndows.

Dec 13, 2010I synced my Music Folders on all my computers with rsync. Now when I open Rhythmbox it shows the mp3s as duplicated. So, every album will have two of track 1 and two of track 2 and so on except for the new records and files that were put into that computers Music Folder because they weren't there before.
So, obviously I am doing something wrong with the path of the files/folders because the rsync must be giving the same file different paths or tags or some such. I know from google searching that Rhythmbox will not display duplicates that are true duplicates.
So, short of simply deleting my music folder on every computer and then putting all of the songs back into it... is there anything I can do?
I should mention that the files/folders are not in reality duplicated. I checked both in the folders and also I opened a folder with VLC and it produced a list of tracks that was not duplicated. Its only Rhythmbox that shows them as duplicates.
I am talking about Rhythmbox on my Fedora 13 64 bit installation.

I know Audacity can do this, but it's not really suitable for multiple files and I have voice notes that are in 10 minute chunks.

Jul 25, 2011On windows I really only used Notepad++ as my text editor, it had two features that I loved.What I need to accomplish is what I would do with Notepad++ column editor.I could have like 100 lines, and place the cursor at a column, and goto edit>column editor, and I could insert an incrementing number. (I could also pad the incrementing number with 0s, this was GREAT for making batch files among other things.)So each line at that column had a number higher than the previous line.The other feature that I used sometimes was a search/replace with regex patterns.Does anyone know of an editor that has those features for linux? I am mostly after the column editor insert feature but if you know of one with both features that would rock.

I only got one problem. I cant encode files with mpeg-4. All options here are grayed out and if I hover over one of the options for a moment it's going to tell me:
"Unsupported audio codec: libmp3lame" Whats funny is that it worked a time before i reinstalled my system. I also checked and I got libmp3lame installed. So why has KDEnlive problems to access this library?

Feb 17, 2011I used K3B to rip some of my DVDs (using the Xvid codec) onto my laptop to take away on holiday with me. This worked fine for 2 of the DVDs but the 3rd one ended up with the audio out of sync with the video. Fortunately VLC comes to the rescue with the ability to offset the video and audio tracks.Is there a way to re-encode the ripped files to permanently fix the offset.

Apr 6, 2010I'm trying to create a script that will trawl through a directory structure looking for VOB files, convert them to AVI and place them in a ./converted/ sub-directory of the the original source folder. I've knocked up the script below which appears to work fine when I place an "echo" in front of the actual ffmpeg encode line, I get the output on the screen with ffmpeg finding all the VOB files in the directories and looking to convert them to the correct sub-directory. Yet, when I remove the echo and run the script for real, ffmpeg converts the first file and then stops. No errors. Is this something to do with ffmpeg or a problem with my script below?

While using 10.04 I used ffmpeg quite a bit and just a few days ago I was using ffmpeg to encode video with the h263p codec.Anyway, for some reason ffmpeg no longer seems to want to decode h263p anymore. If I type "ffmpeg -codecs" to get a codec list, I get" EV h263p H.263+ / H.263-1998 / H.263 version 2"When it used to be "DEV" for decode / encode video. But now just " EV"Even on the ffmpeg website here http://ffmpeg.org/general.html#SEC3 it says ffmpeg should still be able to decode h263p. Yet, it can't!I've tried installing all sorts of codec libraries and I even followed a guide to download and compile ffmpeg myself. Nothing seems to change.

May 24, 2010I have a lot of old video footage around that, I am ashamed to say, I encoded with heavily proprietary codecs like DivX and such during the dark ages (aka. the Windows Times).
Now, I would like to redeem myself from the mistakes of my past by re-encoding everything into open formats.
Since those videos are often not of the best quality (poor camera, poor codecs, poor knowledge), I do not want to loose more quality in the process.
So, to avoid any more mistakes in the future, I would be glad if someone could answer me some of the following questions:
1. Is it even possible to re-encode those movies into something like x264/vp8/theora without loosing any more quality?
2. What tools should I use for that? Command line is actually preferred.
3. What would be the most desirable format to have? I'm thinking about x264 in Martroska with ogg Auto. Is there anything better suited?
