Debian Multimedia :: Xorg Only Uses Small Part Of Screen?

Jun 9, 2011

After a install on a old Toshiba today everything looked fine. But when i tried to start Xorg it start but doesn't use my whole screen. It is not a resolution problem it just doesn't use the whole screen. Hopefully this explanation is understandable. On lenny i had the same issue but once i changed the console resolution size in grub everything was fine. Sadly this is not the case with squeeze. I already tried "X -configure" and had a look at the generated xorg.conf (posted below)

[code]....

After that is tried to run the generated xorg.conf but then it just frooze.

Debian Multimedia :: Periodic Screen Freezes In Jessie

Apr 15, 2015

For months I've been experiencing periodic screen freezes in Debian Jessie. I've tried many ways to debug/fix it without any luck...

I'm running GNOME 3 in Debian Jessie...
Code: Select all$ gnome-shell --version
GNOME Shell 3.12.2
$ cat /etc/issue
Debian GNU/Linux 8
l

On a ThinkPad X60 with a SSD.

Code: Select all$ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

My screen freezes periodically.

By freeze, I mean that the mouse can still move, but everything else behind it is frozen entirelyI can switch to a terminal with CTRL+ALT+F1, it's ... I guess... X or gnome-shell or something that's frozen? Not the whole OS thoughThese freezes last anywhere between 5 or 10 seconds and 3-5 minutesI can't predict when they will occur, but often, after a suspend/resume, they will start occuring much more frequently. Also, they often happen after I enter my password and press ENTER on the lock screen after a resume from suspend. But not exclusively -- they can happen at any other time when I'm doing pretty much anything in GNOME...

Things I've Tried...

When frozen, I've tried to CTRL+ALT+F1, login, and run gnome-shell --replace... [*[When frozen, I can successfully CTRL+ALT+F1 and run `service gdm restart`... with the obvious downside of losing everything I have open. But the screen responds immediately and I can log back in to GNOMEI tried running `Xorg -configure` to generate an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to edit, but received an error about not being able to generate configuration for multiple screens or something (I can retry and provide the exact error if this is a useful direction to try) is it the gnome-shell freezing? Is it X? Is it a problem with the X driver I'm using?

Debian Multimedia :: Use Gnome2 Screen Completely Freezes

May 1, 2011

when Gnome starts my Desktop completely freezes. So I decided to reinstall and install Gnome2. When Debian is freshly installed I still need to configure and install my ATI 6950 Graphic card and the X config. Since the latest drivers from ATI I can use the --initial config from ATI. This all seems to work. But also when I use Gnome2 my screen completely freezes. I don't see any special things in my logs. I do remember that with my previous PC I had the same problem. This was the "first" reason why I left Debian for my desktop.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Online Video Streaming Freezes On Full Screen

Nov 25, 2010

I am using ubuntu 10.10 on Dell Inspiron 1525 dual boot with vista. My concern is streaming online videos through websites such as BBC iplayer, sky news, ....., NDTV news channel, etc. Videos are streaming perfectly fine as long as they are not running on full screen but if I try to run them on full screen video freezes (after a few minutes, say 5). Interestingly, sound does not stop. I can still hear the latest news updates but the video does not correspond. Same videos are running fine whether full screen or not in vista.

Debian Multimedia :: Hibernate / Logout Garbles Screen And Freezes

Jul 13, 2011

I have a problem with garbled graphics after resuming from hibernate or logging out (when the screen blinks and goes back to the display manager). It only occurs when I do either, about half the time. What happens is the edges of everything "bleed" horizontally (left to right) in red and green colors and black text on a white background becomes entirely unreadable (but white text on a black background is readable and just looks a little bolder). If I shut down or restart the computer (softly) when the screen has garbled, then it will freeze and not even the SysRq keys work (I have enabled it in /etc/sysctl.conf). Then the only thing left is to do a hard restart (in which case there's a voice saying "System failed VGA test" before BIOS/GRUB loads) or poweroff. Powering it off and then starting it again works fine. I did a google image search and this is sort of how it looks when it freezes: link

Once the screen has garbled (but only if it hasn't frozen) I can use SysRq to issue S E S I S U O to shut it off and then power it on, and that works: then I get a non-garbled command line after sigterm and it shuts off and starts up properly. If I issue B instead of O (to restart) I get the "System failed VGA test" on boot (but it doesn't freeze when shutting down). Hibernation is easy enough to fix by just turning it off (it's not a laptop so I don't need it anyway), but it still happens sometimes when I log out. So as long as I never change users the system works perfectly and this never happens. I've tried GNOME, Xfce4, OpenBox without any DE, gdm3 and SLiM and the problem persists in all of them.

Some system details:
Debian Squeeze i386 (using only software from the stable main repository)
Kernel: 2.6.32-5-686
Video card: ATI Radeon 9600SE (using the preinstalled open source drivers)
Motherboard: ASUS P4P 800-E

By the way: sometimes when it's in the process of shutting off (when the display hasn't been corrupted), after it kills all graphical applications, I can see that the CLI text gets the garbled look, but at that point the poweroff works without freezing. This is the most similar sounding bug that I could find: [URL]. Unfortunately I can't find a solution to it, and most people who have similar problems seem to get either the garbled graphics or the freezes, but not both. Also: how safe is it to keep shutting off with SysRq to recover from this? Can I get disk errors?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Video Playback Freezes Screen Randomly While Sound & Keyboard Works

Feb 12, 2010

i'm using ubuntu since 8.04, and the current (9.10) is a fresh install on new hdd.the problem was the same each version (8.04, 8.10, 9.04, 9.10) - while i'm playing the video (no matter if i use mplayer [smplayer], gstreamer [totem] or adobe flash plugin [videos]) the playback freezes randomly for about 5-10 sec. during the freeze the movie is still played, i can hear the sound is ok. if i press [space] in smplayer it pauses the playback, so the responses for keyboard actions are ok. not for the mouse clicks however. i can still move the cursor around the screen but it seems the system is not aware of it (clicking on the "pause" button doesnt pause the movie). except the cursor, nothing changes on the screen (if the im [pidgin] window was blinking because of new message, it freezes etc etc).

is there any kind of log i could look into just to try figuring out the problem?it is impossible to watch any movie on my pc (currently i don't have tv)i installed windows on external hdd once and it played videos fine so i suppose it's not hardware problem .

Ubuntu :: Part Of System Screen Is Wider Than It Is?

Jun 30, 2010

I have a problem with in the Gnome Desktop environment. Some parts of my system seem to think my screen is wider than it actually is. To the right if my screen, there is a part of my workspace which I can't see. I can move the mouse pointer there (although I cannot see it then) and I can also drag windows onto this area. If I do that, the window disappears from sight, however, it is visible in the little workspaces of the workspace-switcher-applet in the lower right corner. This applet does display the entire width of the workspace (which is too wide for my screen). If I maximize a window, it does not go onto the invisible part of the workspace.

Ubuntu :: Part Of Boot Process Executes Just Before Login Screen?

Apr 12, 2011

In Ubuntu 10.10 I want to have a shell script execute on bootup after everything else is done, *just* before the computer gets to and sits at the login screen. I find this easy in CentOS/Red Hat. If I place my scripts in /etc/inittab near the end, right after the mingettys, that is PERFECT. But Ubuntu has no /etc/inittab and I have spent the past few days going over and over and OVER more info about Upstart and the rcX scripts and I can't seem to get it. Anything I place in an rcX script runs too late, only after the machine is past the login screen i.e. a human must log in first. And I would rather not have to enable auto-login. I've heard that Ubuntu will honor an /etc/inittab file if you create one, and it does, but that too runs too late, only after a human has logged in. Can anyone tell me where a script should be placed in Ubuntu to execute after all system initialization is done, but before human interaction is required?

Red Hat / Fedora :: Video - Screen Get Fuzzy With The Content Of The Other Part

Feb 19, 2010

I'm relatively new to Linux from an administration pov, and I'm working as half teacher / half tech admin at a school because they can't afford to pay someone who actually knows this stuff. I am having issue with a Foxconn 761GXM2MA-RS2 motherboard, with what I assume is the video driver. Everything looks dandy when booting until the X Window system starts up; at that point, the screen seems to translate some vertical strips of the display output around, so part of the screen gets real fuzzy with the content of the other part.

I am unable to find any Linux drivers for this motherboard, however I may be a bit lucky. Another computer with the same mobo died, so I took the hard drive from that and stuck it in; walla! Functional video..... but no working LAN. I need some way of copying over the drivers (which I believe are compiled into the kernel...) or access to the video drivers and info on how to install it.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Flash Videos Vanish Part Way Through?

Feb 2, 2010

over the last few weeks (i forget exactly when it started) viewing flash videos with konqueror on videos and on the bbc news site has become a bit of a lottery. generally the video starts ok but after a minute or so the video sometimes just disappears -- not even a black box, just white screen and no adobe flash menu on a right-click. the problem happens maybe 50% of the time with videos over a minute or so.

i have seen this on two different boxes both with karmic with the backports enabled. the problem certainly occurs with both kde 4.3.4 & 4.3.5, and i think it was also seen with 4.3.2. does anyone else see this problem? if so is there a fix? i think the following are the most relevant package versions:

code:
ii flashplugin-installer 10.0.42.34ubuntu0.9.10.1 adobe flash player plugin installer
ii konqueror 4:4.3.5-0ubuntu1~karmic1 kde 4's advanced file manager, web browser and document viewer

Ubuntu Installation :: Screen Resolution Crashed - Could Not See The Right Part Of The Same "nvidia" Window

Jul 30, 2010

I was wandering around the system parameters and saw that there was an option to activate a non-open nvidia driver for my Asus Emachine EL1200 with Ubuntu 8.04 install (pre-installed, worked fine for a year now). So I did. However, when I restarted, my screen resolution was changed to 800*600 or so, no good. Although I could not see the right part of the same "nvidia" window, I managed to deactivate the driver. Regretfully when restarting the screen resolution was still 800*600. I thought it was 1440*900 for my Asus VK192S-B (checked it on internet) but it didn't work (did not check the refreshrate at that time). So I stared to fiddle around and stupidly accepted a 1280 * 800. As I said before the resolution is completely f***up now. I have about 4 copies of my desktop and the worst part is there are lines over it and I can not see what the windows say. I manage to get the resolution config screen, but can not get the right optios selected, working "blindfolded".

I looked at this helpful forum and identified the /etc/x11/xorg.conf file as the important file. Also I saw a xorg.conf.failsafe file with my original config! With the recovery cd of Asus I managed o set up a live session and actually can open the xorg.conf file and see the damned line with 1280*800. Regretfully the original /etc folder as well as the original home folder cannot be written in, or copied. Permission problems, as could be expected. I have some backup, but not of quite a lot of photos I uploadd from my camera recently. Reinstalling from scratch is fo the moment not an option.

Debian Multimedia :: (xfce) Can't Copy Part Of A Webpage Using Chrome Or Firefox

Oct 18, 2015

I'm using:

Kernel 3.13.0-65-generic (i686)
Intel 945G video card
Xubuntu 14.04.3 with XFCE 4.10
Firefox 41.0.1
Google Chrome 45.0.2454.101
Dell generic usb mouse

I cannot copy a portion of an entire webpage using Google Chrome or Firefox when copying downwards.

Upwards works.

I've have this issue on the same machine with the following systems:

Debian 8 Jessie XFCe with XFCE 4.10 using Firefox or Google Chrome
Xubuntu 14.04 with XFCE 4.10 and 4.12 using Firefox or Google Chrome
Xubuntu 12.04 live cd using Firefox

This doesn't happen on the same machine with the following systems:

Debian 8 Jessie KDE using Firefox or Google Chrome
Kubuntu 15.04 live DVD using Firefox
LibreOffice Writer
LibreOffice Calc
Mousepad

[URL]

Ex. Go to google.com and paste this in the search area:

can highlight by going upwards but not downwards xfce My mouse can highlight the first line starting with the word "ssh" and the last line ending with the word "everything ..."

My mouse cursor cannot go past the last line "expressions can match many items, but evidently not everything ..."

If I scroll upward, I can copy the entire webpage.

KDE 4.x I don't have this issue.

Using Win7 on a laptop with Firefox 41.0.2 and I'm able to scroll downwards without any issues using the same mouse that was connected to the machine with Xubuntu 14.04.

Sometimes I come across fixes for linux issues on websites. I copy the information and email it to myself for future reference in case I have to reinstall the OS again. I can do a ctrl A and ctrl c but then the entire website is copied. The ads on the side, etc.

If I put my left mouse cursor on the first word in a thread and drag/highlight downwards, my mouse cursor stops line 35 on the page. If I do the same thing but backwards, my mouse cursor goes all the way up the page. This only happens on Firefox and Google Chrome. This doesnt' happen with mousepad, Libre writer or Libre calc.

Ubuntu :: Freezes Sometimes After Screen Lock?

Mar 31, 2010

Sometimes after I enter my password after the screensaver has locked the screen, it will not take my password (even though entered correctly). It seems to lock up. After about 2 mins it says something about a time-out (wish I could do screencaps). Then it will reset and have a gray window the same size as the password input window but on the upper portion of the screen, and a password entry window as normal, but in the lower part of the screen. This time, it accepts the password and logs me in.This is a 2-part post.First, how to bypass having to wait for the timeout (for whatever is timing out). The second is to see if anyone knows an answer to the problem and a fix. After it freezes, hold CTRL-ALT and tap F1.This will taking you to a virtual terminal. Log in with your username and password. Then type:

Code:
$ pkill screensa
This will match gnome-screensaver and kill the program that is frozen. You then need to type
