I have a gziped dd image backup of my entire hda drive (osx and ext4 partitions) that I created with the following command:
dd if=/dev/sda |gzip > image032810.gz
Can I mount this image file to pull off individual files from individual partitions?
Recently, I made a disk image of my external hard drive (as it had recently failed). I have yet to get it replaced, so I have a .dd file sitting on my computer. Now, I can mount the .dd file so I can access the files, but I cannot delete any of them. I want to be able to copy the files file by file to my normal folders and delete them from the backup file, as my disk isn't large enough for me to copy them all to the folders and just delete the entire file.
TL;DR = Can I/How do I delete individual files from a .dd backup.
i have a large directory of .bsp files that i would like to convert .bz2 archives. I've been searching for some time and all i can find is the obvious compress multiple files into one large archive. If anyone knows how to convert each file individually, while retaining the original file name (testmap.bsp would be archived as testmap.bsp.bz2)

I am trying to figure out a way to pull http links out of text files and then output the results in a log. The text files are in folders like this inside a source directory.

So I just had a quick question on logical volumes and such with ubuntu. I've been looking into setting up a storage array of 4 2tb hard drives for media storage in my house but have ran into a wall with with sort of array i should use, whether it be setting up a full raid system (raid 5 or 10 most likely) or using LVM for stripping. The one thing with LVM however, is that there is no parity or redundancy built into it in case 1 hard drive fails. I was wondering if it was possible to create something similar to that of LVM stripping, but instead the logical volume is sorted into whole individual files, not stripping them across the array. That way, if one drive fails, sure, i lose the contents of the one drive, but the rest of the content isn't lost and I have no loss of space because there is no inherent parity.

I have figured out how to uncompress all the files using WinRAR but it puts all the files into a single directory, i need the original folder structure maintained.
When playing dvd's, vob files and wmv files, the image comes with high contrast colors ,very intense red/green/blue. very dark too. I have vlc 1.1.4 installed, using ubuntu 10.10, libdvdcss2 installed. for the rest of the video formats it seems to work fine. any ideas on what should I start debugging?

Before this dedicated server, I had another server that according to some reasons, it was put aside and I requested my datacenter support team to attach previous server's HDD to my new server in order to transfer its information to the new server's HDD. On the disks of previous HDD, Ubuntu 8.04 LTS OS had been installed and most of its capacity was full, but while I mounted that HDD on the new server, the contents of the primary partition were visible but the contents of the extended partition weren't visible. After some inspectings, I observerd that the extended partition type is converted to LVM. Before this, I didn't deal with this kind of partition. I tried to mount this partition but I failed. I read many articles about this problem and implemented instructions on the HDD but the LVM partition was never mounted that returns many different errors and even I pursued the reasons of this errors but non of these remedies didn't solve this problem. Since the datacenter had determined a specifies time for transfering information. then I had to return the SCSI HDD on the specified time, so I was forced to make an image of the hard disk by "TestDisk" software. I've made that image from the LVM partition which its capacity amounts to 150 GB but still I'm not able to mount the image according to instructions on the different related websitres. Since I'm really dummy in Linux Fle System field, I request you to help me to mount this image or extract its contents.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed Fedora 12 in a virtual environment using VMware workstation, I am learning a Linux book. 1. The book ask me to change my directory to Fedora 12 DVD's RPM file directory under terminal. It assumes the mounting point for the disk image would be e.g. '/media/dvd/packages/', but if I type in 'cd /media/dvd/packages/' it obviously won't find the directory. So how do I navigate to the directory using CD command, but I guess put it more accurately I will need to find out what is the mounting point of the Fedora 12 DVD image in my VM.
2. I have another question with my root password, I cannot login as root when the VM first boot up, at the login screen where you are asked about your account name and password screen, So I have to use my normal user account (made up by my first name and last name) when I installed Fedora. But I know exactly what my root password is. The weird thing is I can still access to the root account in the desktops windows environment no problem. e.g. if I go to the top bar 'system-administration-authentication' program, it will let me in after I typed in my root password. In other words, I have access to all the admin tools in the desktop environment.

I am not sure if the card is defective or the image. Is there a way to examine this image without writing it to a physical card? Like trying to mount the partitions separately or checking the tables?

I did a little research on the web and it seems that this file is not really a cd image, but simply data in a .img file. What do you think of that?

Some people recommend to extract the data via the dd command, but it didn't seem very safe for me to do that!

is it possible to extract the data into a directory (instead of a device) using dd? This file is supposed to be a software. I wanted to run it on wine by keeping it mounted on a mount point in my file system. Does it make any sense to try to do this if the file simply isn't a cd image?
I have recovered a whole dying hard drive using the command ddrescue, only 8192 byte out of 4.3 gigabyte are unreadable.I have used the command (gnu) ddrescue /dev/sdb DiskImage.img..But unfortunatly this way i have a full-disk image that is not mountable... ( or at least i don't know how to mount it ), and the disk doesn't seem to work anymore that good... I know i could use photorec foremost or similar software, but since the disc image is almost perfect, i would be able to preserve file names, paths and dates...The last idea would be to mount it as a full-drive image with Virtualbox... But transferring data would be quite annoying.

At first it seemed to show up but then it disappeared. I did the sudo commands and the disk shows up as sdb. I have no idea what I am doing or what to do and all the guides keep talking about adding partitions and programs I have to dl from the net. This is a stand alone computer with no net connection.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have spent the most part of 5 hours trying to fix this issue. For some reason I cannot change the background image to any of mt .jpg wallpaper files (and .png files). I've tried using the Ubuntu-Tweak application, but I end up getting a purple screen (default) or a black screen (default). So then I tried using the terminal method by making the Appearance window appear when I would log out. That works, except when I go to use my background image, it shows as a question mark for the image preview, and the icon for the file is a gray box. All while doing this my background images that I tested are all in the /usr/share/backgrounds location. Please help! I really want to get rid of the default images and use my images... :/ My desktop/screen in 1440x900, and most my background images are around that size. They work with my regular desktop for my account.

Is it safe to remove them and/or to reduce logging so it doesn't take such an enormous amount of hard disk memory? If so, how can I reduce the logging so it doesn't produce logs that are 10s of GB in size?Also, mounting a drive places it into the folder /media. Will it become problematic if the size of the mounted drive exceeds the amount of free space available on my Ubuntu partition?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to mount some CIFS shares (NetApp) to my Ubuntu 11.04 desktop (64-bit).I am mounting it as a domain user with admin rights and full control over the share.ter mounting it as root, all the files are owned by root and I can't modify them from my non-root user.Here is how I am mounting the share:
mount -t cifs -o domain=example,username=example-user,password=mypassword //myfiler.example.com/myshare$/mydir /mnt/myshare/
This share is a qtree under a volume with security type set to NTFS. (Although I have also tried security type = Mixed) We don't configure user-level access to shares on the filer, we create directories and lay down permissions on those from the Windows side. (Although I have tried explicitly adding my domain user to the access list for the share)
