I tried comm,but man says that the files have to be sorted in order to use comm. I dont want to sort the files.

Jun 20, 2011I noticed something a little odd I'm hoping someone can enlighten me on. I noticed in a couple of cases that a package has the proper version, but differs in two regards.
1. The package ends up with a .el4 on the end of the version for Red Hat 4.
2. The actual MD5Sum of the files the package provides differ.
An example below:

So my package changed slightly to now show .el4 versus just 2-2.8.1-1 I've indicated in the first output above that the first couple of lines differ. I stopped my comparison at that point as they truly are different.

2.tar cvfz tarball_2.tgz dir1 dir2 dir3 2>& /dev/null (So that it does not display any error message or operation details to the user)
[usr@machine]$ ls -lrt
-rw-r--r-- 1 usr grp 199843988 May 17 13:39 tarball_1.tgz
-rw-r--r-- 1 usr grp 199837488 May 17 13:53 tarball_2.tgz
But can any one explain the size difference as seen in list output...
Server :: Difference Between America/Mexico_City And Mexico/General Timezone Files?
Nov 25, 2010I have a Centos 5.5 server and I had a problem with its time because it was 1 one hour ahead of my local time. I installed and activated NTP and I created a link for /etc/localtime:

I reboot the server and waited for 1 hour but the time wasnt correct. The server's BIOS clock has UTC time so I edited /etc/sysconfig/clock file replacing:

UTC=true
I reboot the server and waited for 1 hour but the time wasnt correct. After breaking my head for about 1 hour, I realized that there is a directory /usr/share/zoneinfo/Mexico and changed my link for /etc/localtime

ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/Mexico/General /etc/localtime
And It worked. What is the difference between America/Mexico_City and Mexico/General files in /usr/share/timezones, they should be identical but of course they are not?

I have followed some guide in the internet but failed to mount the old harddisk. I got "unknown filesystem type 'lvm2pv'" error when trying to mount /dev/sdb2.

I tried using diff to get a list of the differences between the files lsmod-2.6.35 & lsmod-2.5.38, which I created for this. However, I noticed that there are some difference in the headers files that get generated with the above command as compared to the header files that are available from Debian repo. For example, the header files for 2.6.24 kernel have files like:

As you can see from above output, files like Makefile_32, Makefile_32.cpu are not present, if I generate kernel headers files using the make-kpkg command as mentioned in the beginning of the post. I happened to notice the above issue, while I was trying to compile a out-of-tree kernel module and the "make" command for those sources (some graphics card drm module) worked with the default header files (linux-headers-2.6.24-etchnhalf.1-686) but did not work with (linux-headers-2.6.24-generic-ide) because it did not find the Makefile_32. Although I was able to fix the problem by copying the Makefile_32 from linux-headers-2.6.24-etchnhalf.1-686 but I would like to know why there is a difference. This is bit of a concern because it unnecessarily breaks the out-of-tree module compilation process because of trivial reasons.

Jun 15, 2011I have a question?! have a linux server which was administered by my good friend who has passed away and I have been asked to take over. the server has debian installed (installed oct 2008 and would have been the latest version) and I am looking to backup the smb shares to a external usb disc. I have formatted and mounted the disc and found a script he wrote to automate the backup run from a cron tab. Looking through the script the mount commands dont look quite right to me particulary as the owner will swap drives every day. everything else appears to be working fine! the command to mount in the script is'
mount /mnt/usb
and unmount;
unmount /mnt/usb
I think it should be' mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt/usb
and to unmount . umount /dev/sdc1 /mnt/usb
am I talking nonsense here or I on the right track?

Oct 9, 2010syslog, messages and kern.log are incredibly huge files that are taking up a lot of space on my hard drive. Is it safe to remove them and/or to reduce logging so it doesn't take such an enormous amount of hard disk memory? If so, how can I reduce the logging so it doesn't produce logs that are 10s of GB in size?Also, mounting a drive places it into the folder /media. Will it become problematic if the size of the mounted drive exceeds the amount of free space available on my Ubuntu partition?

This share is a qtree under a volume with security type set to NTFS. What is the difference between the mail.log and mail.info files? Can I turn one or both off? I see alot of messages like...
