When I first installed ubuntu, there was a bar at the bottom of the screen that showed all the programs that were open, at least I think there was. Now it is gone. How do I add it?
View 2 RepliesLucid now has a 'feature' of clogging up the bottom panel, showing open programs twice [normal mode, on the left, compact mode on the right], can this be disabled?
I've attached a screenshot of what I mean, in case I'm not completely clear: see the compact open program thingy's right next to the workspace switcher.
I just freshly installed 10.04 (migrated from 9.10), and the first thing I noticed is that in my bottom panel, the applications crashed ("quit unexpectedly") right after the first boot: the workspace switcher simply disappeared when I tried to change its preferences, and "Show Desktop" crashed without me doing anything (I got the little popup window that allowed me to reload or not). Now, I reloaded them and they're there, but none of my open programs appear in the bottom panel.

In windows OS's when you have multiple windows from the same program open they group themselves together, and on MAC OS's they have a toolbar that you can easily scroll through.
I have had this problem with all installations of Maverick Meerkat. Moving the default clock from the upper panel to the lower panel makes it bahave strangely. When clicked on, it now appears in the middle of the screen (sometimes even higher depending on resolution). This never happened prior to Maverick Meerkat.
How do I go about to fix this strange bug?

So about an hour ago I put my computer on standby. For whatever reason I couldn't bring it back so I restarted it. It works fine except now Ubuntu has pushed my display down. This means that the bottom of my tool-bar on the bottom of the screen is cut off, and there's a black bar on the top. I'm using a T.V. screen so there is no way I can manually adjust it. I also plugged my desktop back into an old monitor and it was off-center downward too.

I am using 8.04, and I have just installed matlab.I don't know if it is matlab or I never noticed it before, but my windows keep disapeering from bottom panel.Firefox is always there, but matlab keeps leaving. I can still get to it by alt-tab, but it is annoying.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI encountered a problem clicking icons at the bottom of programs.An example: I was in Firefox and went to use the 'find' bar at the bottom Firefox application window. However, I couldn't click on it.I could interact with it through keyboard commands, but not by using the mouse. Later that day I tried using Openoffice.org Writer and when I went to click on a toolbar at the bottom of the application window I couldn't choose any of the icons with the mouse... The odd thing is that this only occurs when the bottom of the window is at the lowest point on the screen.(note: I have Avant Window Navigator running, so it isn't literally the bottom of the screen, just the lowest point the window can go.)Does anyone have any thoughts on what might be causing the problem, or maybe how to fix it---------- Post added at 10:25 PM CDT ---------- Previous post was at 09:42 PM CDT ----I just figured out that AWN is causing the problem. Apparently it's regulating more area than it's supposed to. So it's cutting off interaction with the bottom of the window.

When I press the quit or logoff buttons on the desktop it takes me to the logon screen and then at the bottom right corner it allows me to shutdown or reboot. View 2 Replies View RelatedI am running Lucid Lynx 10.04.3. Sometimes when I boot the computer, my desktop icons are not there. I ended up looking for a solution, and found one:
1. Hit Alt-F2 and run gconf-editor
2. Go to apps/nautilus/preferences and check 'show_desktop'
However, show desktop was already checked. If I unchecked it, and then checked it again, the desktop icons appeared. Weird, but problem solved right? Wrong.
Sometimes when I boot, the desktop icons are gone again. This doesn't happen at every single boot though. When they are gone again though, I just have to go through the process again. Here's where it gets worse.
Also, sometimes at boot, both the top and bottom taskbars/system trays are completely gone, leaving just the desktop. Once again, this doesn't happen at every single boot. I can't really do anything, so I just reboot again and more often then not, things are back to normal. Or the trays are back, but the desktop icons are gone again.
The weird thing about this is it doesn't happen every time I boot the computer. So if there is a problem I just restart and things are usually fine again. However this is very frustrating, and NOT normal.
Also, because the default drivers for my NVIDIA GeForce MX4000 were not sufficient, I had to remove the Nouveau drivers and install nvidia-glx-96, which corresponds to the official NVIDIA Linux driver version 96.43.17. This is the latest driver version listed for my card on the NVIDIA website. I also had to downgrade from 11.04 because apparently the old drivers are not compatible with the new X Server version in 11.04. I don't know if this has anything to do with it or not. I'm wondering if maybe i should just get a newer card so I don't have to deal with the older drivers.
my server normally has low load of 0.80 now it is 4.0 'top' shows that programs are not using high cpu, but %wa is very high (80-90%). it has been like this for hours now.how can i find out which program has caused this?

Sometimes, power point presentations will crash the program and then I can't open any open office programs without rebooting the computer. The problem seems to be just with powerpoint files and I'm not sure what the issue could be.

I was transferring some files from an external hard drive onto my desktop computer running ubuntu 10.04...It filled up the hard drive to the max, rebooted and I couldn't login. Did some googling and thought it might be because it was too full so I plugged the ubuntu HDD into my laptop, removed some files and tried again. Still no luck.
What it does is tries to automatically login (that's how I have it set) at the main login prompt, it for some reason is not able to and the screen flickers a bit and shows the login screen. I enter my username and password and it flickers really quick and goes back to the login screen. Does this for my other user account as well. I can login via the command prompt (ctl-alt-f7) and do stuff there, but I cannot login to the GUI.

Happens pretty regularly, but for example, a moment ago, I was trying to switch to Google Public DNS, in the network preferences, have to click apply/ok but cannot do so as the menu box is larger than the screen. Is there a way to scroll down or make the window smaller so that I can click buttons outside standard screen.
