I recently Installed Matlab and it keeps giving me this permission error, even after running the following command.
sudo chown -R ${USER}:${USER} ~/.matlab
Cannot write to preference file "matlab.prf" in "/home/"username"/.matlab/R2010a".
Check file permissions.
Cannot write to preference file "matlab.prf" in "/home/"username"/.matlab/R2010a".
Check file permissions.
The desktop configuration was not saved successfully
Cannot write to preference file "matlab.prf" in "/home/jiangmi/.matlab/R2010a".Check file permissions.every time i run matlab by typing matlab in the terminal,i see this error messagei can run some m files, but i can not use ctrl+A to copy, etc.when i view the permission, i find below:
jiangmi@jiangmi-laptop:~/.matlab/R2010a$ ls -rl total 1368 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1265183 2010-06-05 20:04 toolbox_cache-7.10.0-2356054188-glnx86.xml
I am trying to change the write permissions on a file and On the screenshot you will see where i have underlined, its states i dont have owner rights to modify this file, how do I get owner Permissions when this is my installation..
I have apache2 running on my computer. I want to change the permissions for /var/www/ so that I can edit the files without a problem. Right now I can use the gksudo command, but I'd like to be able to have all the files available when using an IDE like eclipse. I've read in several places that Code: chmod 755 /var/www will do, but if I'm not mistaken that would give read/write access to anyone. I'm not in a production environment, so I'm not too worried about security, but I'd like to give anyone else as less permissions as possible. Would this be possible?
I need to set up permissions for matlab (at least I think permissions is the problem). I haven't been able to find any conclusive instructions how to set permissions and the advice I see are often confusing or contradictory. I have installed matlab (64-bit version) using root account as that was recommended by the installer and everything seems fine except for the error message I got after installation:
[root@localhost User]# /mnt/dvd/install The following messages were written to standard error while running 'xsetup' the X Window System version of 'install'. xsetup: Unable to load required font. Warning: This program is an suid-root program or is being run by the root user. The full text of the error or warning message cannot be safely formatted in this environment. You may get a more descriptive message by running the program as a non-root user or by removing the suid bit on the executable. Warning: Cannot convert string "%s" to type %s Check the content of the installation output file (backend):
/usr/local/lib64/matlab/install_matlab.out Error messages found: Warning: Permission Problem With MATLAB Files! | Checked some files in your MATLAB root directory. These are bad:| -r--r--r--. (not world readable) - ./toolbox/matlab/general/diary.m .....
Can I set up permissions to make it work afterwards? If so - how? I see the error message talking about the permissions being -r--r--r-- which I guess is only readable to all users. But should I set permissions to folders, executables or both? Was there anything I could have done before installation to make this work? I'm rather new to linux though I feel quite comfortable to work with the terminal. My system is fedora 13.
I found this excellent resource: [URL]. Though I'm still not sure how to set up permissions and I'm a bit hesitant as I don't want to create any security holes in my system. Would it be enough for me to give executable rights for my user to the program files in usr/local/bin? Now that I look at the permissions it seems I already have permission (through others...?) to the mentioned files. ... -r-xr-xr-x. 1 root root 174426 5 jan 2010 librxtxSerial.so -r-xr-xr-x. 1 root root 94246 4 jan 2010 libtbbmalloc.so.2 ...
I own a particular file on a Linux system. I would like to give 2 groups (accounting, shipping) read access and only read access, and 3 users(Mike, Raj and Wally) write access and only write access. How can I accomplish this?
I am writing some code in matlab and I would like to do some reading of how to write cleaner code and how to name variables and write comments. One more questions. Let's say that I find for example a file that has really nice structured comments. For example specific format commenting function inputs, outputs author code. Can afterwards copy and paste and use someone's comments format or this is might some copyright problem?
I want to simply mount an ext4 file-system onto a normal mount point in Ubuntu (/media/whereever), as read-writable for the current logged-in user, i.e. me.
I don't want to add anything into /etc/fstab, I just want to do it now, manually. I need super-user privileges to mount a device, but then only root can read-write that mount. I've tried various of the mount options, added it into fstab, but with no luck.
i borrowed an external hard drive from my friend to back up a load of stuff on my windows partition before reinstalling it. I am doing this through ubuntu. I am trying to zip up folders like My Documents etc and chuck them on the external hard drive but it always comes up with errors to do with read/write permissions. In the permissions tab on the folder properties of the ext hard drive it says I am owner but i have no file access (only folder access is create and delete files). When i try to give myself read/write permission it just goes straight back to nothing when i look at it again.
I open an ODS file and edit it and save, fine. But sometimes and for no readily apparent reason it refuses to save the document with the error message:"Error saving the document <filename>: Write error. The file could not be written". I have upgraded my version of OpenOffice but the issue remains. Once it starts with that error the only way to save the file is to actually abandon my change and restart OOffice. Today I lost an hours stuff as the auto save was also failing but not giving me any warning it was failing. I'm not sure if this is an OpenOffice, file system, Fedora or permissions issue though I've not noticed anything similar with other applications. Have set permissions to 777 but still get the error.
I have been trying to install MATLAB 2008b as a standalone version; however, every time when the process runs to 18% it shows an error as follows: "There was an error extracting the archives for MATLAB compiler. Chceck that you have enough disk space and rerun the installer."
I did have checked the disk space which is much more than enough. I have also changed few different disks that are way more than enough as well, about 5GB at least, but this error still popped out when it runs to 18%.
i got some mail starting in the last days with this content:
Code:
/etc/cron.daily/logrotate: error: bad top line in state file /var/lib/logrotate/status error: could not read state file, will not attempt to write into it run-parts: /etc/cron.daily/logrotate exited with return code 1 /var/lib/logrotate/status
I mount a partition to a directory and ls -liah tells me that everyone has read/write/execute permissions on the whole thing, but I try to save a file into the partition and I get an access denied error. First of all this doesn't make sense because ls is telling me I do have access.
Then it gets weirder. I run sudo chown -R me:me directory. The command exits without error, but then when I go and look at the directory again with ls, it still shows up as owned by root and I still have the same problem. This is particularly strange because I am still able to change permissions normally in the operating system filesystem. It just won't work on the mounted partition.
I had to register with a new username, because I could not remember my logon details and have since changed ISP so could not get details sent, anyway that aside to the problem.
I upgraded to 11.04 and all went well (hence posting here and not in the Upgrade section) and it is running fine, well until yesterday.
I ran the update manager as I usually do when first entering Ubuntu and it did an update but then gave me an error message about file permissions and to check my connection (which was connected OK).It has also affected the Software Installer, and now I can not install any new software.
Is this a generic problem with the latest update or is it just my Dell Inspiron 1545 please?
I have installed opensuse 11.3 64 bit. For many years was able to connect to a file server within our domain via konqueror in all previous versions of opensuse using: smb://user@server.ip.adress/userdata/user_name/ This would ask me a password and then I would be able to move, read, create and delete files. I never configured samba on the linux client because this method always worked. However very recently (I suspect since I installed 11.3) I am facing a problem I cannot resolve. I can still log in, browse the remote folder, read files, create new ones (for example a txt file), delete them, but I cannot copy into that remote folder files larger than about 20KB (I try copying or moving files by dragging them from my desktop into the konqueror window that shows the remote folder contents).
Small files are OK, but for files are larger than ~20KB there is an error saying: Could not write to file smb://{path_to_my_file_in_the_remote_folder}. Strangely, the file is nevertheless created in the remote folder, but with a fixed length size of 32KiB.
I am trying to convert .raw images taken with a camera to fits format using a matlab script which is choking at fits_write_image command. The error is:
"??? Undefined function or method 'fits_write_image' for input arguments of type 'char'."
I already have downloaded cfitsio and fitsio. Does anyone know why I am getting this error and how to fix it?
I am trying to install matlab onto my personal laptop. When I start to download I get a file "download_agent" I have updated my java to the most recent edition and when I run "javaws download_agent" I get this error :

I installed Matlab in Ubuntu 10.10. I was able to get it running and I saw the initializing screen. However it showed me an error with OpenGL "warning : could not query OpenGL" and it freezes there. I tried many things to get over with it and it didn't work.
Finally I managed to install my printer/scanner drivers. The last thing I need to do is to add the following two lines to 40-libsane.rules (which is a read only file):# Brother scanners ATTRS{idVendor}=="04f9", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes".How can I change permissions for this file or add these lines without changing permissions?
i have sevrel hard drives among 3 pcs all (root of the drive)re shared (except os drive)one pc i use for captureing tv this drive has no write permission from my local pc but all other hard drives have read/write permissions
I am trying to install Matlab v. 7.10 on my Ubuntu machine. I was able to successfully download the necessary files. However, when I attempt to install using ' ./install ', I get the following error message: Finished extracting ftp files. Starting installer ... An error status was returned by the program 'xsetup', the X Window System version of 'install'.
The following essages were written to standard error: /home/user1/mathworks_downloads/update/install/main.sh: 178: /home/user1/mathworks_downloads/update/bin/glnxa64/xsetup: not found Attempt to fix the problem and try again. If X is not available or 'xsetup' cannot be made to work then try the terminal version of 'install' using the command: install* -t or INSTALL* -t Sorry! Setup aborted . . .
I tried using the command instal* -t, as recommended by the program, but then I get this error message: Finished extracting ftp files. I am very new to linux. I just got the dual boot working a couple of days ago. Now I downloaded MATLAB (2009b) from my university website. It came in a zip file...well I have no clue how to install it. I looked at the instruction manual, it doesn't really explain much.
I have a computer with Windows and I am running a Matlab program remotely in a Linux server. That (matlab) program will use an executable file (.exe) to analize some data; and that data will be used as input to a program that I can only run in the linux server.I need to run an executable file (.exe) from matlab in a linux enviroment. Is this possible?
so i have a limited user (my dad) on Jaunty who has no write access to his floppy disks. Nautilus gives a permission denied error, and i discovered that root owns the floppy drive, thus allowing his read-only. (that write tab on the floppy in on btw). However, when i login as a admin, nautilus says that user has write access. ??? I check the user's user privliges and everything exept "administer the system" is checked. I can copy files on it by logging in as root.
From a Win 7 client, I can copy/create/delete any files on any share on the Ubuntu Samba server so long that is part of my nix file system which is all ext4.This box also has and NTFS partition on it primarily for storage. I can copy/create/delete anything on this partition form the same Win 7 client with the exception of Quickbook save files.I have scoured the web looking for anything close to this but have yet to find anything that looks similar. Not lloking for a direct answer but if there is anyone else that has issues copying specific types of files to a Samba NTFS partition.
I am running Karmic x64 on a HP laptop that has a cd/dvd burner. I have a r/w cd with files on it and I wish to add/remove files to it. After it mounts automatically on insertion, I unmount it and remount with: sudo mount /dev/sr0 -t iso9660 -w /media/cdrom (I tried assorted other hare-brained things also) but it always says that the filesystem is read only. Do I need to use a different device than sr0? Is it even possible under Ubuntu?
I'm pretty new to Linux but I know my way around. I've gotten Google Earth downloaded and am trying to install it. Everything is fine until I try to install it into /usr/local (or somewhere in there). The Google Earth Setup keeps telling me that I do not have write permissions on this directory. Question: How do I change the write permissions for this folder? Or should I install the program somewhere else? The last program I installed (xMind) installed into /usr/local.I am the only user (administrator
I installed MATLAB R2009a in my laptop (Fedora 14 x86-64), the installation was succesful but when I run MATLAB (in a console), appears a message: error while loading shared libraries: libut.so: cannot enable executable stack as shared object requires: Permission denied
I find a "solution", execute in a terminal: execstack -c libut.so
I used several times with differents libraries that I needed, but I run MATLAB in a terminal, MATLAB starts in a terminal, only a prompt ">>" and nothing.
