Ubuntu Networking :: Lucid Wireless Randomly Disconnects
Jun 25, 2010
After upgrade to Lucid I have experienced intermittent wireless disruptions. The wireless just cuts out and reconnects.And I was hoping to continue or follow up on the same thread however with the released version.I tried replacing network manager with wicd and I tried the other driver options both without success.I'm currently using the Broadcom B43 driver, when I tried the Broadcom STA driver wireless would not work. I use the 64 bit OS, and this problem did not appear prior to the upgrade.

I'm having a problem with my wireless connection. When it runs, it's perfect, but every once in a while (and increasingly more often) it randomly disconnects and doesn't reconnect when I click reconnect, even if I manually disconnect it. Every time this happens, I have to reboot the system, after which it works perfectly. Then it dies again.
I've checked around the forums, there are some similar threads but they seem to be specific to the wireless card. The reboot method works, but I'd really like to find a way to solve the problem without having to resolve to the Vulcan nerve pinch. I'm a real newbie to Linux and the more complex side of computers in general, and I hardly know what is what, so please excuse me if I seem a bit thick.

When I first turn it on to the desktop, it automatically connects and disconnects automatically 5 times then sometimes it would disconnect a few times randomly out of the blue.
This ia an external single usb wireless adapter you plug in the usb port on my desktop tower.

When I installed Lucid I got temporary wifi connection. It disconnected for no reason. Then it was constantly trying to reconnect, telling me my password was wrong. Which wasn't wrong at all. So I installed Lucid again from scratch and now everything seems to work fine. The only thing I didn't do was install the 'restricted drivers'. This was only one driver for me which had to do with my modem. Wifi works perfectly now. I hope it stays that way .reinstall Lucid and DO NOT install the 'restricted drivers' for your modem

I have a hp dv3 2110eg laptop with OpenSuse 11.1 (KDE 3.5.10) and Windows 7 dual boot. My wireless disconnects and connects automatically at random intervals. I do not observe this behaviour when operating my laptop under Windows 7. Following some suggestions given in this forum , I uninstalled networkmanager and installed wicd. However, this does not seem to solve the problem. Given below are the relevant information.

I have an Ubuntu 11.04 Server set up for my small office whose sole job is to run as a samba file server. The problem is that it randomly hangs. For example, I can connect the clients just fine, however if left idle it tends to take a few moments to work when you try to go back into the shared folder or drive. The client will behave like it is disconnected and is trying to search for the drive only to a few moments later, go right back to normal behavior.
If I ping this server while this is happening my requests will time out for a little while and then just start working. The same thing happens when I try to connect with Putty or through WebMin. One second its unreachable then the next its fine.I have already tried swapping out patch cables (which actually seemed to work for about 2 weeks) and I have patched it to an alternate port on the switch. The only thing I have not done at this time is to change the NIC.All the clients are running Win7 with the exception of two XP machines.Simply put, its like the machine just goes dormant for a while until you ping at it for a while to wake it back up.

This problem is fixed in the upcoming kernel, 2.6.34. You can either wait until Canonical releases the update, or download, build and install the 2.6.34 kernel manually. The instructions to do so are HERE. It's fairly easy.I'm having a problem on Lucid (amd64) with a Linksys WUSB54Gv4 usb wifi adapter. After some time (varies between ~10 mins to a few hours), the connection is lost. However, in my case I can't connect back. It tries to establish the connection, then pops up the dialog asking for the WEP key again. It will do this repeatedly, not ever connecting back.This is basically how the disconnect looks in dmesg:Quote:
[ 2657.920014] phy0 -> rt2500usb_set_device_state: Error - Device failed to ente
r state 1 (-16).
[ 2658.120008] phy0 -> rt2500usb_set_device_state: Error - Device failed to enter state 3 (-16).

I just upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 but other than that the most annoying thing I've found is that my wifi will randomly disconnect from the network...like it will say its still connected but pages wont load and all my torrents just stop, and then I have to manually disconnect from the network and then reconnect and it works for about a min and then happens again. I couldn't even get enough internet to post this from my laptop so I had to post this at school from a windows. Idk whats going on but it sucks because I cant really use the comp without the internet..

I'm not sure if this started with the 2.6.34.4 or 2.6.34.7 update, but one of those.At random intervals the USB subsystem disconnects. When that happens the monitor screen goes black (no input signal) and then returns 1 - 2 seconds later. This was happening every once every 1 - 2 days; today the count is 10 times. It's gotten really annoying.There is a topic about USB mouse and keyboard becoming unavailable due to recent kernel updates. That is not the issue here; I have tried disabling USB auto-suspend with no observable change in behavior.Or could it be that I have a defective mouse?

I'm using an Acer Aspire One d250 running Netubuntu 10.04. The wireless connection to my router fails at random intervals and spends most of it's time trying to reconnect. It will occasionally ask me to input the password to the network, which is already entered in the dialog box, and clicking "connect" doesn't seem to make any difference. Also, when it is disconnected from the network, none of the other computers in the house, wired or wireless, are having any problems. If there is any more information I could provide,

I use ubuntu 10.10 and disconnects from wireless at random. after it reconnects the the connection speed is very slow and unstable. It's not my router because it works fine on my sister's netbook (which is also running ubuntu) and it worked fine when I was running windows? I'm not very advanced with linux so you know. I don't have IPv6 enabled. My laptop is an "Advent QRC430" my wireless card is QCOM Q802XKG Wireless Network Card.

After I updated to kernel-2.6.27.9-159.fc10 a couple of weeks ago, my wireless kept dropping the connection every few minutes (using an intel 3945 with the kernel iwl driver), particularly if secured with WPA. Updating to the 2.6.27.12-170.2.5.fc10 kernel currently in updates-testing has solved the problem.

I facing a really annoying problem. I download regularly during the night using Wifi. The problem is that because I'm away, the wireless just disconnects and the pop window shows up asking me to into the password. The password is already saved in the windows so I just have to click 'connect'ut I don't understand why does it disconnect and when it tries to connect it asks for password again!y doesn't it simply 'try' to connect without asking the password when it is already saved.

I recently upgraded from Maverick Meerkat to (classic) Natty Narwhal Ubuntu Linux. I am running on a Toshiba Satellite A665 (Intel i7). I use a wireless internet connection. Under Maverick, I had no issues. Under the update, I am finding that occasionally things stop working: The indicator Applet looks fine, but from a terminal, I find that I am no longer able to ping my own router (less than 10 feet away.) This behavior occurs after working fine for a few hours. I am unsure if anything in particular triggers it (I will report back if I determine a particular cause). I have a few other computers (2 running Windows, and the other Maverick Meerkat) -- and they are unaffected. Turning wireless off and on resolves the issue for me on Natty. Rebooting also works. Here's some hopefully relevant technical details about my system:
Code:
~$ rfkill list all
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no

I'm having issue with my wireless connection. I'm not sure if it is the WPA security causing the issue, but I randomly lose connection to the router. The network manager then scans for available wireless routers for a bit before trying to reconnect to my router and asking for my wireless password again.

Running Ubuntu 11.04 on a Gateway LT3103U netbook. It's running fine except for that fact that when it goes to sleep (timeout or lid closed) or going into suspend or otherwise restarted/shutdown, my router restarts. It's a DLink DIR-655 that has been working fine until I changed this netbook to Ubuntu.After installing Ubuntu on the netbook, it found my SSID being broadcast and I added the connection by supplying the WPA2 password. I have full network access (local and internet).
It's just the router restarts and all my other machines lose connections. The router is using DHCP but supplying IPs based on MAC. Netbook is set to use DHCP.

I have my laptop dual booted between Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7. In Ubuntu I randomly lose connection to the wireless network. It always works fine when I first boot into Ubuntu but after a while my wireless connection will go down. The signal strength meter will go to zero bars and the black popup message will appear that my wireless connection has disconnected. At first, if I just wait a bit, the connection will come back. However, after about 4 or 5 times of doing this it will then ask me for my password, and inputting the password does not reconnect me to the AP. I am finally forced to reboot. Then it works OK for a while again and the cycle repeats.
It works fine in Windows7 all day, every day. I have the Release Candidate of Windows7 so it's going to expire soon. I would really prefer to make Ubuntu my everyday OS on this laptop rather than pay for a Windows7 license but I cannot tolerate a flaky wireless connection.
I had 8.1 on this laptop at one point and I never had any problems with the wireless then, that I can remember. I had no Ubuntu for a while but then I came back with the 9.1 and was loving it until the wireless problem reared it's ugly head.

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 because I was facing internet problems with previous Ubuntu 9.04 after I upgraded it with downloaded software. And now, 10.10 connects to wireless, but shows web-page some-times and repeatedly disconnects. Earlier it wasn't reaching Internet at all. Some of the topics here helped a lot. But this intermittent internet seems not going anywhere. Wired Internet connects easily though.
I've tried :-
-disabling ipv6..... first in Firefox, then in Kernel also
-Setting DNS.....System> Preferences> Network Connections
-setting static Ip
The system still gives trouble.
My system is Asus UL20A.

I have a Huawei E220 3G modem and I'm using Ubuntu 9.10. The modem picks up on USB, and the connection works, sort of. With random times, I can't get on the internet, and when running:
Code:
mtr -n -c3 -r 4.4.4.4
it tells me:
Quote:
Could not get fd's flags: Bad file descriptor
No nameservers defined
Network Manager Applet 0.7.996 is reporting my wireless connected, and applications like Skype is working perfectly. I just can't browse.
When I restart a couple of times, and my internet browsing capability starts working eventually at times. The behavior is very random.It appears that when I fiddle with USB devices, like unplugging my external hard drive, and plugging the USB modem in and out, restarting, it helps. Also, when plugging in my USB 3G modem, an icon pops up on the desktop, mounting the USB device as a USB flash drive. The device has on-board memory, but can I disable this / prevent it from mounting?I also disabled IPv6 by setting:
Code:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="ipv6.disable= 1 quiet splash"
in /etc/default/grub
What I also did was to "hard code" DNS by adding:
Code:
prepend domain-name-servers 208.67.222.222,208.67.220.220;
to /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf

I do randomly (as far as I know) loose my wireless network connection. The only thing to do then is to restart my router and after that it works for a while. I know this is not a hardware issue because I don't have this problem with KDE, only in gnome. I think this problem occurred after I started using 10.04, but then I changed to KDE and forgot about it. But now I'm using gnome again and loosing my network connection over and over drives me mad

I have a problem with my wireless connection in ubuntu (natty with amd64bit) There seems to be intermittent disruption in my connection. Havent seen a pattern as yet, though it happens once a day. After that I cant get it to work at all and only restarting + reconnecting the USB device helps. Dont know what is going on.I have already read these pages : Commands and Wireless Troubleshooting.Here is my line of though1) Given that I am able to connect other devices to it while I am not able to connect through this desktop, I think the router is OK.2) I am able to work with it after restart + re-connection . And so the driver is OK and is loaded. The driver seems to be oK and loaded even while I am not able to connect.So why is this happening and how can I get this under control without having to reboot and re-connect the device everytime.Here are the output for the commands which will give you a more detailed idea of the process. Before reboot while I was not able to connect:

The behavior seems to be the following: Start up, connects to network and work fine until I suspend my machine. On wake up, it works again but after a seemingly random amount of time the connection is lost and I can no longer find any networks. Attached is dmesg output after startup and connecting to a wireless network (dmesgAfterConecting.txt) and the same after the connection has been lost (dmesgAfterConnectLost.txt).
