According to the Open Source Initiative an open source license must among all other things be "9. License Must Not Restrict Other Software: The license must not place restrictions on other software that is distributed along with the licensed software. For example, the license must not insist that all other programs distributed on the same medium must be open-source software." Now GPL v2 (and all oher versions) instead require "You must cause any work that you distribute or publish, that in whole or in part contains or is derived from the Program or any part thereof, to be licensed as a whole at no charge to all third parties under the terms of this License. ", basically this is the reason why GPL is considered a viral license: because any works derived from a copyleft work must themselves be copyleft when distributed (and thus they exhibit a viral phenomenon). Now the problem is in wikipedia [URL] I see that GPL is approved by OSI as open source, but the point 9 of OSI and the vitality of GPL should be incompatible with each other!

What's the centos-approved way to handle group environment configuration? Let's say there are users in, oh, 4 different groups. Let's use the usual suspects:
accounting
warehouse
admin
netadmin
and I want to set up environment variables and maybe some pathing that are specific to a given group. So that when 'joeblow', who is a member of group 'warehouse', logs in, the pathing and environment variables (and whatever else) that is needed for users in the 'warehouse' group is set up and configured.
What I was initially looking for was an /etc/groups.d, and in /etc/groups.d is
/etc/groups.d
accounting.sh
warehouse.sh
admin.sh
netadmin.sh
As part of the login process, the group memberships for the login username would be examined, and for each hit the respective /etc/groups.d/ script would be run. I'm not seeing anything like that, so I'm assuming centos uses some other mechanism, but I'm obviously not using the proper keyword mojo. Can someone point me to where this mechanism is described?

What's the procedure for updating from Lucid Beta 2 to Lucid LTS? Is it just "apt-get upgrade"? Or would I be better off with a clean install?

I recently upgraded from Karmic to Lucid via the Update Manager. I would like to upgrade further by switching from 32 Bit to 64 Bit. I downloaded the Lucid 64 Bit ISO and wrote an install disk. When I reboot the computer with the install disk nothing happens.

I recently installed Ubuntu 10 and when checking the version using system|about it says:
Code:
You are using Ubuntu 10.10 - the Maverick Meerkat - released in October 2010 and supported until April 2012. Now, I run some shellscripts and they check the distro. lucid-wx is not in supported versions but lucid is. Where can I change the lucid-wx to lucid?
Is it somewhere in a textfile or so? I cannot find it in /etc/issues or using man -n of man -a or so.
Also, it is not mentioned in /etc/lsb-release.

I just tried to log into my Ubuntu Lucid machine, and I get the login prompt, but when I try to log in, the screen goes black for a few seconds and then goes right back to the login screen and I get a warning about my Gnome power manager defaults not being set correctly.

I've burned iso CDs for 8.10, 9.04, 9.10, Linux Mint 5, 6, 7 with Brasero. In addition I've burned music CDs with Brasero. It has worked well for me. But now I can't burn a 10.04 iso CD. I REALLY want to get a CD burned so I can install Lucid Lynx.
don't suggest I try kb3, Gnomebaker, or some other burner.. Brasero which always worked before.

I want to make an iso for some friends [and maybe friends of friends] that aren't all that tech savvy, so I want to change a few things to the original Lucid iso. First, I want the option to install Lucid out of the boot menu [but the other options should ideally stay]. Second, I want to include the ubuntu-restricted-extras so they can immediately try it out and see that it also plays video/audio etc.

About two weeks ago I upgraded from Karmic to Lucid. The upgrade went fine, everything works wonderfull, except maybe for Wine but am still figuring that out.
What I find a bit strange is that on the boot-up screen (where I get the choice between the different OS's on my two hard-drives) I still see Karmic listed on the partition where I upgraded (see attachment: on /dev/sda1).
When I boot-up, I first get this message: Mounting: mounting none on /dev failed: no such device
This stays about 20 seconds on screen after which Lucid starts up and gives me the log-in screen.

Since today, I cannot start to X anymore. Grub loads, I let it start, then after a while screen goes black, stays black, puter not responding at all, screen goes to power save.
I can boot to safe console though but not start X there either.
So far I tried Memtest (no errors found) and apt-get update and upgrade. SafeX doesn't work.

Apparently is not supported on lucid for some reason. I went and installed a jaunty package i downloaded from launchpad. It installed ok, including dependencies and all, but it's not working. I went and check the config file and notice that it was not even created.
I want this small app really badly. Would anyone help me to fix a workaround or point me the direction to a working package?

Every blue moon it will catch the esc and I get the grub menu. I have fixed my original issue by reinstalling the ATI support, but would like to know of any similar issues with Grub.

I am rather irritated right now. I managed to install kde 4.5rc alongside gnome 2.30. And the 1st impression is barely ok. It seems stable and fast, but because wi-fi doesn't work for me, it's really limited in where it can go. Considering I'm typing this logged in thru gnome on the exact same system, connected to the wi-fi network kde refused to connect to, it's rather baffling. Update: Used networkmanager-gnome to get me connectd in before I login since network doesn't use security (even gnome doesn't play well with that.
KDE issues (some from 4.4.2 and still in 4.4.92). Plasma:
1.Tooltips aren't persistent, they shy away after a few seconds. Also they should update with data they're representing (yes system monitor, I'm looking at you);
2.Allow setting of colours for graphs e.g. ram monitor, cpu monitor. Was there but now gone;
3.A more convenient way to exit the plasma dashboard (right click on background perhaps?);
4.Individual wallpapers per desktop; (again, there before in 3.5)
5.Panel auto-hide show delay still not adjustable; choice for fade-in animation;
Kwin:
1.The present windows effect wastes a lot of space under 'natural' without 'presenting' the windows optimally; other setting (fixed & flexible grid) make programs like audacious look utterly horrible; the placement algorithm needs to be sorted;
2.Oxygen menus have too much border, give impression of bloat;
3.Kwin compositing freezes everytime I change decoration, style, font, etc. Have to use key shortcut to disable then re-enable. This is somehow connected to my system using more swap as time goes on, while mem usage remains ~40% (of 2gig)
Dolphin:
1.Ability to show basic media file metadata without need for nepomuk (as was possible in konqueror in 3.5.x), e.g resolution of jpeg/png/bmp images, id3 info from mp3/ogg/wma files; pdf [this marked as done in the feature plan, yet to see it)
2.More columns for sorting in details view (windows explorer excels in this). Above point will be needed before this is possible;
Amarok (2.3.1):
1.Still no proper use of album artist tag (for compilation albums and such) and/or proper detection of various artists listed in the 'artist' tag;
2.All embedded album art is useless;
3.Album art isn't shown prominently in the collection browser (22px crap doesn't count, the art itself is >300px);
4.Can't queue files from collection. Can queue from playlist, albums applet but not collection. Why?;
It is a stable pre-release software but stable can only get us so far. The basic features users have clamored for aren't being provided, resulting in my playing music with banshee and viewing my pics with geeqie.

Anyone know how to run memtest86+ from the Ubuntu 10.04 install CD without having to install Ubuntu? It used to be a menu option at boot, but now you just get the option to install or try Ubuntu. I want to test the RAM on an older system before I install.

Every time I've tried to install it it ether over wrights my boot file, and I lose windows (a few programs I have to have in there)when I try a standard install or it fails to boot when I do the Wubi install. Is there any where I can re download the previous 46 bit version? I seam to have lost the ISO.

I have a fresh install of 64bit Ubuntu Lucid and I can not install a printer in the manner that I have been doing for some years now. I would like to click on System --> Administration --> Printing and then Add but it is grayed out and the applet has not connected to the Cups Server. This is the long term service edition and it would seem that printing is broken: at least at this location.

The result After following these instructions you'll get:
-GDM 2.20, with all the features(themes, feature complete, configurable...)
-No Plymouth, or any graphical boot (haven't found a way to run old gdm along with Plymouth)
These instructions are based on this post [URL] but they won't work on Lucid 10.04 Download GDM 2.20 on this link. Remove gdm and install the downloaded package.
Code:
sudo apt-get remove gdm
sudo dpkg -i gdm*.deb
sudo mv /etc/init/gdm.conf /etc/init/gdm.bak
Run these commands (related to a bug in this package):
Code:
cd /usr
sudo mkdir X11R6
cd X11R6
sudo ln -s /usr/bin bin
Disable the graphical boot (reason: Plymouth loads X, and old gdm can't connect, fixes are welcome)
-Edit /etc/default/grub and change
Code:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="splash quiet"
to
Code:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet"
Run:
Code:
sudo update-grub2

I've gone through many different threads about sound problems with Lucid, but so far, nothing I've done has helped. I get absolutely no sound in this installation. Everything was working until I upgraded from Karmic.
For a while, I thought it might be my sound card, so I put in a new Sound Blaster card, but was still unable to get sound. I have since removed it, but still available if I need to re-install.
System particulars:
uname -a
Linux odin 2.6.32-24-generic #43-Ubuntu SMP Thu Sep 16 14:58:24 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux
lspci -v
[Code]....
If I try to launch System->Preferences->Sound, I get a popup with "waiting for sound system to respond".
I've tried a number of things (including deleting the pulseaudio files, upgrading alsa etc) from my user but cannot get sound to work. correctly.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1764 with 4GB of RAM. I have Win7 and Lucid as a dual boot. My processor is quad core Intel Core i5 M430 @2.27GHz. The problem is that I should show 4GB of RAM but the Ubuntu side only shows 2.9GB and the readout on conky shows 2.88GB. Why is this? Is Ubuntu not utilizing all available RAM?
