Ubuntu :: Lucid Not Booting To X?
May 19, 2010
Since today, I cannot start to X anymore. Grub loads, I let it start, then after a while screen goes black, stays black, puter not responding at all, screen goes to power save.
I can boot to safe console though but not start X there either.
So far I tried Memtest (no errors found) and apt-get update and upgrade. SafeX doesn't work.

I think it should be that the splash comes out immediately after one click ubuntu to boot in grub. just like that in windows....
But always it's black with a cursor twinkling before the splash comes out.And in fact it holds most of the boot time in the black screen. When splash comes out it just exists less than one second and immediately goes to the login window.
Though ubuntu lucid is very very wonderful now , i want it to be better .

server configuration: SCSI 36gig -> sdd; boot and root as it was first in the box;2 IDE hard drives -> sda/sdb for data; and1 SATA drive -> sdc for data. After upgrading to Lucid (not right away, but a bit later), it stopped booting:'Gave up waiting for root device.'ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/........... does not exist. Dropping to a shell!(initramfs)Happily, pushing ^D let it resume booting, but it kept repeating. After some study, I found the Lucid release notes that said "if you upgrade to ext4, you have to manually update Grub". A quick check showed that sdd was now, indeed ext4 - nobody told me! And, why couldn't it update Grub by itself? But, I dutifully ran grub-install and life went back to normal.
Until last night, when I updated the kernel, etc. with apt-get and restarted, and grub dropped dead:More googling turned up this solution, which I used with an install CD:http://tinyurl.com/2dhswzzWhich worked, but it brought back the first problem, and running grub-install doesn't fix it. So, what do I do now?

Why my 10.04 install runs out of memory when it has hardly had chance to load the kernel. The symptoms were that it sometimes will hang after the grub screen with a blinking cursor. My user space splash screen doesn't appear either, it was when I was trying to fix that that I spotted the problem:
from my dmesg file:

I downloaded Ubuntu Lucid...something onto a cd and I booted into it on my iMac G4. It brought me to a screen saying things like live is default press tab for more options etc and when I just press enter, the screen turns white, loads a few things, then it turns blank and after awhile, I hear the Ubuntu startup sound but my screen remains blank.

Code:
The bootloader is installed on a partition that does not lie entirely below 128 GB. The system might not boot.

I started out with Kubuntu RC, then installed ubuntu-desktop and updated all the way to the current state of packages.Anyway, from the moment I installed the RC, from time to time the boot splash appears, the dots light up/turn off and then the booting hags. No key seems to work.I the do a hard reset and everything works just fine.As not to open another thread:- how can I see the Ubuntu splash screen? (currently I can see the Kubuntu one)- how can I turn the splash off and have it boot in text mode?

What's the procedure for updating from Lucid Beta 2 to Lucid LTS? Is it just "apt-get upgrade"? Or would I be better off with a clean install?

i decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup, when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because, again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.
Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then, instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing, once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup, then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process, once i finished i continued to the next part, the installation, but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data, after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.
When it tried to boot, appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line, since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version.
I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. Also in GParted it appears as /dev/sda1/ and a warning icon besides it,also when i go into information, thers this warning there [URL]

I've been searching the forums for any posts that cover my problem, but most of the booting problems I've found are different from mine.Anywho, the situation:ell laptop, 2 partitions, first is Windows XP, second is Ubuntu Karmic.Whenever I turn on my computer the first loading screen that shows up (is this the BIOS? Excuse my little knowledge of this stuff), before GRUB loads, is really slow. It takes about a minute to load. However, whenever I restart from my XP partition, it suddenly loads fast! And this does not happen when restarting from my Ubuntu partition or anything

I recently installed Ubuntu 10 and when checking the version using system|about it says:
Code:
You are using Ubuntu 10.10 - the Maverick Meerkat - released in October 2010 and supported until April 2012. Now, I run some shellscripts and they check the distro. lucid-wx is not in supported versions but lucid is. Where can I change the lucid-wx to lucid?
Is it somewhere in a textfile or so? I cannot find it in /etc/issues or using man -n of man -a or so.
Also, it is not mentioned in /etc/lsb-release.

I've burned iso CDs for 8.10, 9.04, 9.10, Linux Mint 5, 6, 7 with Brasero. In addition I've burned music CDs with Brasero. It has worked well for me. But now I can't burn a 10.04 iso CD. I REALLY want to get a CD burned so I can install Lucid Lynx.
don't suggest I try kb3, Gnomebaker, or some other burner.. Brasero which always worked before.

I want to make an iso for some friends [and maybe friends of friends] that aren't all that tech savvy, so I want to change a few things to the original Lucid iso. First, I want the option to install Lucid out of the boot menu [but the other options should ideally stay]. Second, I want to include the ubuntu-restricted-extras so they can immediately try it out and see that it also plays video/audio etc.

About two weeks ago I upgraded from Karmic to Lucid. The upgrade went fine, everything works wonderfull, except maybe for Wine but am still figuring that out.
What I find a bit strange is that on the boot-up screen (where I get the choice between the different OS's on my two hard-drives) I still see Karmic listed on the partition where I upgraded (see attachment: on /dev/sda1).
When I boot-up, I first get this message: Mounting: mounting none on /dev failed: no such device
This stays about 20 seconds on screen after which Lucid starts up and gives me the log-in screen.
