Ubuntu :: Looking For Application To Overclock CPU?
Apr 19, 2010
I am looking for an app that behaves like CPU-Z for windows, because I am desperately wanting to overclock my CPU. However, I don't want to do it without a CPU monitor that monitors heat/clockspeed/voltages/etc.
I recently switch from Windows 7 to Ubuntu 10.04 and then to 10.10. When I had Windows 7 running I was overclocking via manual settings in my BIOS. I am almost positive I had the same overclocking settings in my BIOS when I had 10.04 as well.
For some reason though when I use the same settings with 10.10 it tries to but up, but it just says it will restart in 30 seconds. I have no idea why. I know the overclock is stable as I have been using it for a year or more. This seems to just happen when I got 10.10.
I am trying to get a stable overclock on my processor and if it's not set to exactly 3.2GHz or 2.66GHz (stock clock) I get this message. Using sysinfo, the OS does not register over 3.2GHz even when I have it clocked @ > 3.2
All the google searches and bug reports seem to talk about sound problems and webcam issues being the cause, but I've had this problem since I switched to Ubuntu and have not yet found a resolution.
I recently purchased a replacement CPU & motherboard and, with a grand after-market CPU heatsink and fan, was able to create a stable overclocked system of 3.8/3.9GHz (from a stock of 3.2GHz).
However, when I run, say, Code: Select alllscpu, Code: Select allcpuid (after installing said package) or Code: Select allless /proc/cpuinfo it only lists the stock speeds of 3.2GHz.
What would be the best way within my operating system to view my current clock speeds?
Now I have never done this "Overclocking" stuff, It seems like it would be of great use. My laptop isn't in any way good in those departments. Thus I want to try and upgrade them, the cheap way.
placed for the decision to by a quad intel processor with more speed i was searching the internet for a 3ghz quad as i stumbled on a artikel saying overclock a q6600 from 2.4 to 3.0 ghz in 30 seconds I only had to set the frontbus speed to 1333 and vcore to 1.325 memory 800 / 8 gb had to be set to dram=1.9 ht=1.3 nb=1.3 sb=1.3
Speedup the videocard i set the pcie to 124 mhz And all is running rocksolid ..... video and vlc video 3 tab on google-chrome i had a load off 13% on the cpu's no video problems what so ever and no overheating no more as 49degr C Total cost 0 $ and 10 minutes editing the bios and some reboots.
How do I make an application launcher in the panel launch more than one application? Is there some sort of a symbol I type between the apps in the command line? Like ;
when an application is opened or minimized the icon of that particular application is not showing up in the top bar of ubuntu 11.04...how can i see the icons in the top bar?
I've downloaded VideoLan (VLC) via Yast but the icon was placed in the audio folder. How do I move it to the video player folder? Also, where are additional icons stored? I run SuSE 11.2 (boxed version) with KDE.
I am getting no packages listed in Gnome application manager gpk-application 2.27.2. I have tried 'yum clean all' and get the following error messages.
So, I have this application called Impact, it is an explicit time integration Finite Elements code written in Java...

I untar the pack, and launch the application calling a script, from within the untarred folder,
Code:
This launches a gui which allows me to setup a case, which needs some setup file, tipically some *.in and a mesh file, tipically some *.msh.
Other mode of executuion consists of calling the setup file as argument to Impact.sh script ( CLI execution mode, for g33k5 )
My problem is : I have packed the whole stuff into a Slackware .tgz, that places it in /usr/local/Impact, and placed a calling script in /usr/local/bin,
Code:
Code:
I decided to hack the ImpactGUI_OGL_linux_amd64.sh script from
Code:
Code:
no avail,
Code:
even after adding /usr/local/Impact/bin to PATH... won't go...
I can run this thing from within its directory... but I do not like messing within the directories of my applications, this is why I sent this to /usr/local, and placed a calling script in /usr/local/bin...
I am trying to troubleshoot an application that is generating several segfaults with an error 14, but the application is not crashing. The program continues to run. I would assume I can connect to a running process to debug it, but I'm not sure what to gather. The program has several background processes associated with it so I'm sure I'll need to attach to the actual internal process. Does anyone have any experience in this to offer some insight?
you're playing a game like Supertuxcart or Open Arena and the screen freezes which hints at something that has crashed.Well this happened this weekend when my mate's kids were playing those games on my laptop running Ubuntu 9.10.
All I could think of to resolve the issue was to hit the Power Button and restart my laptop. I am assuming that this is not exactly a good thing to do but at the time I could not think of anything else to do seeing as the screen froze and I could not use the mouse or pressing any buttons.Anybody got any ideas on how to un crash an application with out hitting the power button and forcing a re-boot?
i'm new to ubuntu, and also new to linux. so basically i have many many questions to ask. so i describe myself as a new human being in this linux world.
today i found out when i download an application, it comes in "tar.gz" format, so i searched for solution, and the only answer i get is to go to the package manager and download the package. well... that is not a relevant answer.
then i went to try out the firefox, so i found out that the firefox was out-of-date, it was only v3.5 , i went to help> and where is the check for update option, i was like huh!? where is that button? so i googled it and found out the update website, then i downloaded the file, before i open it, i saw "tar.gz" o.o!!??
nevermind, i plug in my pendrive to play some music, then the movie player came out and gave me an error message that i have to download some files to play this mp3 format. ok, i guess a 600mb operating installer doesn't comes with everything, and i clicked download. dang! error! could not locate the file ..
ok, i switched back to windows, went to videos to search for solution on how to install tar.gz files. the video showed me, first you extract the file to anywhere, then you open the file, then you *blah blah blah* the terminal, type this command xyzabc^#*
so, my main question is how to install an application downloaded from a website? don't tell me it's package manager because there are many things i can't download there.
I heared that there is an application for ubuntu that can run .net application under ubuntu... They told me to use mono. Since, wine cannot run .net application, it only can run .exe files....
I did installed mono using this tutorial in this site[URL] and I did installed mono utilities from synaptic. but, I don't know how to run the application using mono !! I tried to click the right mouse and run it with it. but I didn't see mono from the list. also, I tried to search for it from the application & I didn't find it. Maybe its just a setting and cannot run it like an application... If that its right, how can I run the application then ??
Note: I'm running under ubuntu 10.04 64bit, and i'm trying to run subtitle workshop under ubuntu. It requires the .Net framework 2.0. When I run it under wine, it tolds me that it needs .net framework to run...

If I insert an Audio CD into my CD/DVD Writer, I cannot choose an application. So I launched Nautilus and chose Edit>Preferences>Media. Here's the problem. All options under Media Handling are grayed out and show "No application found" except for Software. Why can I not select any applications for CD Audio, DVD Video, Music Player, or Photos?I use Ubuntu 10.10 x64.
I'm supposed to be starting an online course through OntarioLearn, and they provide software called "Embanet" which all the assignments are issued and turned in through. Wine won't run the Windows XP version of the software. There's also a Mac version but I'm not sure if it would be easier to get that working. This is the error I get. After which, the application doesn't start (but it runs in the background):
Quote: wine fcc32.exe err:dbghelp_msce_load_debug_directory Got a page fault while loading symbols
I have the application set to run with Windows XP compatibility, but no luck. I think my only option is to install Windows through VirtualBox/Qemu, but as I don't have a Windows install CD for this computer (only a 64bit CD, I need 32) I don't know if it'll be possible. I have a 64bit processor (C2D T7250), but Ubuntu is installed as 32bit. Will VB or Qemu accept my 64bit installation CD?
We are looking for windows OS alternative but most of our users still use clipper (dos) application. Can Ubuntu address this requirement and how? I once try opensuse and install dosemu but could not work as expected.
