Now I have never done this "Overclocking" stuff, It seems like it would be of great use. My laptop isn't in any way good in those departments. Thus I want to try and upgrade them, the cheap way.
View 8 RepliesI've been playing around with Damn Small Linux 4.4.10 on my Dell Inspiron 3000 laptop for quite a while now, and this is the first time I've been downright stumped. To make a long story short, I'm trying to play 480p video on a machine with a 233 MHz Pentium processor, 112 MB of ram, and a Neomagic MagicGraph 128XD graphics card (NM2160). Crazy? Maybe, but I don't think so. I'm using MPlayer set to Xv mode with the XFree86 4.3.0 server, and so far, I've been able to get it to play 360p mpegs with minimal stuttering. However, MPlayer crashes with 480p. This is because the 128XD only has 2 MB of memory, which, after the 1024x768x16 screen takes its share, doesn't leave enough room for a 640x480 overlay.
The creators of MPlayer are aware of this limitation, and suggest adding the following line to my XF86Config file: Option "OverlayMem" "829440"
As I understand it, this is supposed to extend the video card's frame buffer into system memory, thus allowing the higher resolution video to play. However, it doesn't work, based on this output from my XFree86 log file: cannot reserve 829440 bytes for overlay...

I'm a Ubuntu Karmic Koala (9.10) user.Everytime I start Ubuntu up, before the login screen, I get a message that there's something wrong with the graphics or videocard, telling me that I'd have to run Ubuntu in low-resolution. Okay, fine, log-in screen, I log in. The wallpaper loads. That's all that loads. No panels at all, no desktop icons, nothing. Alt + F2 doesn't work and I strongly fear that I'd have to reinstall Ubuntu, and that's a great loss to all my files. I currently can't afford external memory and I don't have external memory in possession.

Former graphics card was a Radeon, bought within the past couple years, pretty high specs. (I am having trouble determining what the card is right now, I'll update my post when I figure it out).
I remember having to mess around with some config files to get it to work at first, but right now how to 'unfix' it now.
I was having trouble getting X.Org to work with the video card in a recently acquired laptop, so I decided to try to probe around the configuration of a Linux Live CD to figure out how to set up my kernel. I chose the Sabayon 5.0 Live DVD because it was the only one that I could find that was the same or newer than the 2.6.32 kernel I have installed on the laptop right now. Of course, the DVD booted right into GNOME without issue, unlike the hangs and crashes that I had been getting. So, I want to figure out what kernel driver this Live DVD is currently using, but I don't know how to. hwinfo doesn't shed any light on the matter, and lspci -vnn doesn't list a driver for my video device, though both methods correctly identify that I have an Intel 855GM video processor. How can I find out this information?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 motherboard with integrated graphics that shows up on lspci as an ATI Radeon 2100. I also bought a PCI-Express Nvidia graphics card so I could use the VDPAU feature on Linux (plays H.264 in hardware). The BIOS has three settings about which display to initialize first:
Integrated graphics
PCI graphics
PCI-Express graphics (PEG)
I set the BIOS on PEG, but
I cannot get anything, not even a splash screen or POST messages, to emerge from the PCI-Express graphics card. (I'm using a DVI connector; the card also has an HDMI output.)I cannot get the kernel lspci to see the graphics card; the only VGA controller it acknowledges is the integrated one.Running dmidecode acknowledges the existence of an x16 PCI Express slot, and it says

There is an additional BIOS setting called "Internal Graphics Mode" which is normally set to "Auto" which means it is supposed to prefer a PCI Express VGA card. I set it to "Disabled" which now means I'm getting no output at all. I will soon be learning how to do a BIOS reset!
Other information: The PCI-E card is a MSI N210-MD512H GeForce 210. This is a fanless card. Although there are no fans to see turning, the heat sink on the PCI-E card is definitely getting hot, so the card is getting some sort of power.It gets all its power from the PCI-E slot; there is no external power connector.The BIOS is an AMI Award BIOS.how can I make the PCI Express graphics card visible to Ubuntu?

View 5 Replies View RelatedIf I take out the existing video card and put in another one of a different type (but not a different brand), how does Ubuntu behave? I know what Windows typically does. Windows starts up the screen using a default video driver which is at least 1024 by 768 and then asks you what this new bit of hardware is and asks where the drivers are. I'm pretty sure Ubuntu has default drivers of its own, but I don't know what their resolution is.

I pulled out a dying AGP card to try and switch to onboard video, and I think the previous configuration is gumming up the works.I've been running this system for quite a while, as you'll be able to tell from the version numbers.Would like to avoid having to transport my Amarok databases to a new server. I make heavy use of the song ratings and whenever I try to transport the database from the old system to a fresh build I have to spend hours relearning sql commands.Any ideas how to either fix the resolutions on the ATI or (preferably) get KDE to start on the onboard graphics?

but my ubuntu 10.04 32-bit system still won't boot. Shortly after the ubuntu logo comes up, before the login, my screen goes black and there is no more video signal. What else can I do to reset the video configuration? The card only has this info on it: I could put the card back in the system, reboot, and then pre-configure the system to drop to the intel 865G on-board video, but the msi card has intermittent problems and will spontaneously re-boot several times during the first ten minutes of turning on the system.

I have previously used Cinelerra-cv (on Karmic) and recently Openshot (on Lucid) with not much trouble. I have been sampling other video editors (Kdenlive, avidemux, kino etc). Now I have my video card crashing whichever I use, mainly when trying to load clips. I have disabled Compiz, uninstalled all video editors and then reinstalled one at a time. I still get early video crashes whichever I try.
In Fedora 10, I cannot get to the installer because it shows these messed up strips graphics (its not due to my graphic card, my graphic card is supported 7600gt) in non-quiet install it shows logical errors and i/o errors.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI recently switch from Windows 7 to Ubuntu 10.04 and then to 10.10. When I had Windows 7 running I was overclocking via manual settings in my BIOS. I am almost positive I had the same overclocking settings in my BIOS when I had 10.04 as well.
For some reason though when I use the same settings with 10.10 it tries to but up, but it just says it will restart in 30 seconds. I have no idea why. I know the overclock is stable as I have been using it for a year or more. This seems to just happen when I got 10.10.
I am looking for an app that behaves like CPU-Z for windows, because I am desperately wanting to overclock my CPU. However, I don't want to do it without a CPU monitor that monitors heat/clockspeed/voltages/etc.

I've put a second video card in my computer running 9.10(64-bit) to setup a 3rd monitor.
I'm using the following video cards with the 190 driver from nVidia:
Video Card 0: nVidia GeForce 9500 (PCI express x16)
Video Card 1: nVidia GeForce 6200 (PCI)
but when i run lspci the second video card isn't seen in the list. The bios is set to automatic detection, and I've seen it work on a identical second system that has windows 7 so I know the bios is capable of running the two cards concurrently.
I've verified the 190 driver is compatible with the 6200 series and have tested it by setting the bios to use the (PCI) device manually.
Is it possible to run a box with 2 graphics cards in it with one card being a PCIe x16 and the other being a PCIe x1?
Unsure whether this would cause all sorts of problems with ubuntu and/or the nvidia drivers (2 quatro NVS 290's).
I want to run a system that acts as a basic file server, I want to remove the graphics card for the sake of power saving and less heat in the box. My machine can boot without the GPU, and I can ping it and use putty to do things, but I'm still new to Linux and don't really know what I'm doing so GUI is best for me atm.
From somewhere I picked up that this is possible (the XDMCP server machine can have no GPU). This post here [URL].. seems to be what I am looking for, but I don't know how to "convert" these instructions to Ubuntu (the files mentioned do not exist on my install anyway).

I'm using a lenovo notebook with switchable graphics (Intel HD and ATI Radeon 5650), and I'd like to have Ubuntu use the integrated graphics, but I can't figure out how. The BIOS has two graphics options: switchable and discrete. On discrete just the ATI card runs, but on switchable, it seems like both cards are being used. Is it possible to use just the integrated graphics?

View 1 Replies View RelatedUbuntu is not the problem; I don't think. I'm running Maverick 10.10. With my computer I have to unplug and plug back in the graphics card every time I want to start up the computer so I usually keep it running 24-7. There was a power surge and when I got it back running, once it reached the load boot screen and it was stuck their for awhile. Then it instantly sent me to x-term. So I tried logging in and typing:
sudo start gdm
It said it was already running but I could not display anything or login the normal way. I restarted and the same thing happened. I managed to get to Recovery Mode and I fixed broken packages and then I ran it in low graphics mode. It said that the display, monitors, input, and graphics card could not be detected. If there was a way to resize the screen to something more tolerably than 800x600 in low graphics mode I'd be glad to hear it. I could at least stick around to using that until I can fix some stuff up.
I've just installed ubuntu 10.10 on my desktop system. it worked fine with my 5770 but when using my gtx 460 it has a crashing problem. After roughly 30 secs running the screen has a red cast and a grid pattern to the bottom right of the mouse. Need directions to solve this such as new drivers or an exact sequence etc as i've only got 30 secs to completee process before it freezes. Specific graphics card is a gainward gtx 460 GLH too btw

It doesn't have an HDMI interface but DVI, I'm not sure if ones better than the other. I'm wondering if I should upgrade the video card. I'll be running windows 7 and Ubuntu but the thing is I won't be doing any gaming on the computer other than casual gaming. I have a play station 3 that I do gaming on.
