I would like to apply a tiny tweak to my ubuntu bootup ... I have set chrome to autostart but it starts up a few seconds before the wireless kicks in.
How do i apply a lag on the startup time of chrome so that it starts after a few seconds?
A colleague of mine was studying at the University of Vienna and saw an application which was based on linux whereby other pc's booted from it and if on the server they had set it to force a clean install on that PC it would download and install a windows image. Does anyone know of the app or could point me in the direction of a similar app.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on my pc with XBMC installed. It's set to boot into xbmc on start up and works fine. I also have squeezebox server (a music server for my network) installed and again don't have any trouble. I'd now like to get squeezeslave running, a client for squeezebox server so I added the following lines to /etc/init.d/local:

PATH=/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin
squeezeslave -o0 -r3 192.168.1.3 &
exit 0
This fails to start the client on boot, however if I ssh into the machine and run /etc/init.d/local it runs fine.
I have a need to run a specific app as a specific user when the machine boots into init 3. I can not run this as root so I need to specify a user. Can someone tell me how to accomplish this?I usually have to log in and start this application by typing check -D which starts this app and daemonizes it. I want to be able to run that at boot with my normal user not root.I hope I explained this correctly.I have added it to rc.local but it runs as root.

After a ton of reading, I realized I don't actually have windows, but the Toshiba recovery discs that have windows on them. I was initially able to run Mint within Windows, but what I would rather do until I can buy windows (bleh) is dual boot. Will this recovery software allow me to partition the hard drive?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a need to start an application on bootup on the linux console and I do not have a need for any type of login or security. I do not need any ALT-F1,F2,etc virtual consoles but I would like to allow SSH access via the network port for debugging, loading, etc.
The application is a SDL graphics program running with fbcon as the SDL_VIDEODRIVER if that matters. I'm currently using Fedora 10 and 12 but any distro that supports SDL using the fbcon framebuffer would be acceptable.
I am writing one simple server daemon and running with /etc/init.d/server its running properly but when i want to run one simple QT GUI with system() function , its not able to run it and returning 256 as return code .
If same daemon i m running from terminal then its working properly and also system() function is getting success with return value 0 and GUI is getting popped up.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am new to opensuse, having migrated from Ubuntu. I have had some difficulty with power management on Ubuntu so i decided to install opensuse with kde as i heard it was good for laptops. I have had lots of trouble getting opensuse 11.4 to boot properly and to run without freezing.
I have trawled the forums and bugzilla and the documentation, e.g. SDB:ATI - openSUSE and SDB:Configuring graphics cards - openSUSE. Consequently i am now able to boot (normally), however whenever i open any application, e.g. Dolphin file manager, Firefox, etc, the tab starts to load (little circle starts spinning on the tab), and then it freezes.
At this point I can exit X Windows and enter the text mode. I have repeated this with the FGLRX and Radeon drivers running. This is always repeatable. I can also boot into level 3 and do things there.
My computer details are:
HP Pavilion dv6 3032TX
Processor - Intel i7 720 QM
Ram - 6GB
GPU - ATI Mobility Radeon 5650
Harddrive - 640GB 5400rpm

Note that i cannot failsafe boot - it never boots into X Windows and just hangs. I really do like the look and feel of opensuse and would love to use it, but at this point my only option is to try another distro.

I can run this thing from within its directory... but I do not like messing within the directories of my applications, this is why I sent this to /usr/local, and placed a calling script in /usr/local/bin...
I am trying to troubleshoot an application that is generating several segfaults with an error 14, but the application is not crashing.The program continues to run. I would assume I can connect to a running process to debug it, but I'm not sure what to gather. The program has several background processes associated with it so I'm sure I'll need to attach to the actual internal process. Does anyone have any experience in this to offer some insight?

I installed 11.04 after Windows 7. when the GRUB boot menu starts up there is an option for Win 7 boot but it will not boot windows. When that option is selected the screen changes colour for 2 seconds and then reverts to the GRUB menu. Ubuntu boots fine.I downloaded the Boot Info Script and ran it, the results are

you're playing a game like Supertuxcart or Open Arena and the screen freezes which hints at something that has crashed.Well this happened this weekend when my mate's kids were playing those games on my laptop running Ubuntu 9.10.
All I could think of to resolve the issue was to hit the Power Button and restart my laptop. I am assuming that this is not exactly a good thing to do but at the time I could not think of anything else to do seeing as the screen froze and I could not use the mouse or pressing any buttons.Anybody got any ideas on how to un crash an application with out hitting the power button and forcing a re-boot?

so basically i have many many questions to ask.
so i describe myself as a new human being in this linux world.
today i found out when i download an application, it comes in "tar.gz" format,
so i searched for solution, and the only answer i get is to go to the package manager and download the package. well... that is not a relevant answer.
then i went to try out the firefox, so i found out that the firefox was out-of-date, it was only v3.5 , i went to help> and where is the check for update option, i was like huh!? where is that button? so i googled it and found out the update website, then i downloaded the file, before i open it, i saw "tar.gz" o.o!!??
nevermind, i plug in my pendrive to play some music, then the movie player came out and gave me an error message that i have to download some files to play this mp3 format. ok, i guess a 600mb operating installer doesn't comes with everything, and i clicked download.
dang! error! could not locate the file ..
ok, i switched back to windows, went to videos to search for solution on how to install tar.gz files. the video showed me, first you extract the file to anywhere, then you open the file, then you *blah blah blah* the terminal, type this command xyzabc^#*
so, my main question is how to install an application downloaded from a website?
don't tell me it's package manager because there are many things i can't download there.
I am looking for an app that behaves like CPU-Z for windows, because I am desperately wanting to overclock my CPU. However, I don't want to do it without a CPU monitor that monitors heat/clockspeed/voltages/etc.

Wine won't run the Windows XP version of the software. There's also a Mac version but I'm not sure if it would be easier to get that working. This is the error I get. After which, the application doesn't start (but it runs in the background):

I have the application set to run with Windows XP compatibility, but no luck. I think my only option is to install Windows through VirtualBox/Qemu, but as I don't have a Windows install CD for this computer (only a 64bit CD, I need 32) I don't know if it'll be possible. I have a 64bit processor (C2D T7250), but Ubuntu is installed as 32bit. Will VB or Qemu accept my 64bit installation CD?
