View 2 RepliesSo I have been testing out the Ubuntu Live CD 10.04 on my PowerBook G4 and most everything seems to be working fine (with the exception of wireless and the dim/brighten buttons.) When connected to the internet via ethernet cable, I was able to download the broadcom hardware (I guess needed to make wireless work??) This is pictured below. However, even after the hardware thing was activated, when I unplugged the ethernet cord and clicked on the icon for wireless internet under wireless, it says, "Device not ready." Can you get wireless to work with the live cd?
View 5 Replies View RelatedPer the HowTo post a Wireless Issue Sticky, I have included the information in the 10 steps below. Here is the description of my problem: I am getting back into Linux after purchasing a new PC (have not owned one personally for several months). I purchased an HP, as I've had personal success with them. It is an HP Pavilion g4 Notebook. When I booted the Live CD, I was pleased that wireless just worked. However, after installing, wireless does not work. The Additional Drivers Tool appears to recognize my wireless card;however, when I attempt to active the driver, I receive an "installation failed" dialog.ere are two screenshots:And here are the results of the file from the second screenshot:

I'm considering installing Debian on my Toshiba A660 laptop but I want to be sure the wireless connection will work. I have Windows 7 on it already on it and it has a Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter. Is there an easy way to set up a wireless connection and will it work on a live CD to test it?
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy first upgrade attempt to 9.10 ruined my install - there was no return and as 9.10 would not install either, I reinstalled 9.04 and everything was as expected.I decided to wait for 10.04 hoping the issue had been solved - unluckily it has NOT. Neither Live CD 9.10 nor 10.04 work. New Mint does not work either - to closely related to Ubuntu, but Suse live CD does. Played around with findings from different threads - like taking out "quiet splash --" and adding modprob parameter to no avail Prime suspect is HD and HD controller (ATA/PATA) - but I could not nail it.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have tried building the minimal & desktop Centos 5 live CDs to no avail.Depending on the build environment, they either do not build at all (Centos 5, i386) or they build but kernel panic when I boot them (Fedora 12).I've tried various tweaks to the provided kickstart files but I have not had any success. It is important to note that I have written some very impressive (according to others) Fedora kickstart builds so I am at a loss why the stock Centos files fail.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?I suspect it has something to do with the livecd-tools or syslinux versions but all of the versions I have tried it with make no difference.
Trying to boot Ubuntu 10.04.1 live CD and I get nowhere because the screen just stays black, with a monitor OSD alert saying "Cannot display this mode."
Is there a consumer version of Ubuntu available for regular people to use? I searched on the fourms and any post about "cannot display this mode" advises users to edit configuration files, or go into command line mode... what is this, 1991?
What is the real solution to this? Or is Ubuntu not made for consumer users? What other options do I have besides Mandrake?
The Ubuntu screenshots looks swell, nice graphic design of the user interface, pretty, but they should make the installer/live CD actually work like any other OS in 2010 first tho'.
I just installed Ubuntu 10.10. I was using iBall N 150M USB adapter for internet connection with Windows XP. Let me explain about the present Windows connection :
I am using an Outdoor CPE Wimax. For mobility purpose I have connected this wimax to one LAN port of ADSL+ WiFi router ( Beetel 450 TC1 ). This ADSL+wifi router reset to Factosy settings and enabled DHCP. With this setting , I am perfectly able to connect my laptop to Internet.
When I connect my USB adapter to Ubuntu , intially it detected the signal and asked for credentials. I gave the same and network established. But I am not able to browse the net. If I give [URL]..., its going to the ADSL+Wifi's diagnosis page. With Windows , [URL]... was going to the Wimax modem. After 2-3 trial and error , now Ubuntu also not able to connect to the wifi network.
I am using Ubuntu 8.04. Most of my Administration functions have stopped working. If I click on Hardware Drivers, Hardware Testing, Log In Window, Software Sources, Synaptic Package Manager, and Windows Wireless Drivers my pointer turns into the timer wheel, so I know it is working, but then it just disappears and nothing happens. When I click on Update Manager my computer freezes. If I try to update through the red Updates Available arrow at the top of my screen my computer freezes. I can update through terminal but the red arrow never goes away. I also have 17 updates that won't update. I have tried them one at a time through terminal but they just freeze the computer. The only way to unfreeze it is to shut the computer down.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI had some bash scripts on Ubuntu 09.10 (mint version) that fail to work on Ubuntu 10.04. The line that fails is the following:
Code: # cat file_with_my-password.txt > sudo -S something cat: invalid option -- 'S' Try `cat --help' for more information. In my case "something" mounts some filesystems (that fail to load from fstab - bios "fake" raid 10), but I get the same error for any sudo command. It is the same script that used to work under 09.04 :-/
reason my wireless is constantly failing. the only solution is a reboot but it will start to fail again. I use hp mini 210 ubuntu netbook remix.here is a log file

Wireless worked fine on live cd, but for some reason not after install. I think maybe the driver is not loading, but I am a pretty much still a noob, so my opinion isn't worth much. If it is the driver not loading, I don't know what to do to fix it. Here is my wireless output information.

I have an Atheros ar5007eg wireless card, and I haven't had problems with this card in GNOME. However, when I made the switch to KDE recently, I can't connect to any wireless networks. A wired connection works fine (that's how I'm writing this), but when I try to connect to any wireless network, it hangs at Acquiring IP Address, then asks me for my WEP key again, I enter it, and the process starts over. I tried using WICD, but I'm not sure if I set it up properly.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am using Intel Xeon X 3440 processor. The processor has 11 frequency steps to chose from. I have used cpufreq-selector for choosing a frequency and it worked fine. But, all of a sudden it stops working out of the 11 steps i can change to only 2 frequencies and rest fail to work. I am clueless as to why it stopped working suddenly.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI wanted some input on chronic problems with Ubuntu:
1. Why does wireless almost never work right on Ubuntu?
2. Why, when Ubuntu just decides to turn off my wireless card, can I not just turn it back on?
3. Why do tar balls almost never unpack right?
4. Why are printer drivers so buggy?
5. Why do my MP3 players and digital cameras not work with Ubuntu?
I spent 3 hours last night trying to unpack a tar.bz2 file so I can run my Ralink network card. It worked fine until my son unplugged my computer. Now my card is disconnected and it will not reconnect. When I check forums no one has a simple answer for something as simple as turning a network card back on. On my Apple, it's simple: click my wireless icon and hit "on." tell me an easy way to just turn my wireless card back on, it would renew my faith a little in Linux.

I have a Compaq Presario V2000 laptop, with 55GB hard drive and 516MB ram. So far, the trial mode is working great, but the wireless will not work. Ive tried to install the driver, but i am unable to do so. I have looked this up, and i have tried many things, and so far, none have worked.I was wondering if it was just part of the trial thing or not, but it is a Broadcom Wireless BCM4318 driver

The last time I used the live cd I didn't wait for Ubuntu to shutdown completly and removed the cd when it was still on the process of shuting down. What can be causing this problem?

I want to upgrade the installation of Ubuntu on my laptop. However since I prefer a clean install I made a bootable USB with the 10.10 64 bit edition on it.
I can Boot from the USB fine but then it tries to connect to the wireless, it sees it's WPA secured asks for the password and then it tries for 20 seconds and asks for the password again.
I've checked the password by reentering it in my current 10.04 install and it works fine there, but connecting with the live cd is a no go.
I have a dell 1737 with an intel 1510 half mini card.
Booting into a live desktop from USB, the correct wireless drivers pop-up to be installed even when not connected to the internet. But upon installing Ubuntu the only way to install these drivers is through a wired connection. Any thoughts as to why this is? I'd love to be able to run any version of Ubuntu out of the box, but experience always brings back the ethernet cable.
Running: HP Mini 110, Broadcom wireless
I have a Dell inspiron 1420 and its set up as a dual boot. Windows/Fedora.I cant get the wireless card to work. I review some previous posts but still cant get it working.
