Ubuntu :: Laptop Suspends When Plugged Into Mains?
May 7, 2010
I have 10.04 on an NEC Versa M500e laptop and when I plug it into the wall while running when the battery's low it goes into suspend mode; is it possible to fix this? Didn't have this problem in 8.04.

I have an up-to-date x86-64 F11 installation. Twice every day once precisely at 10:40am, and once sometime roughly around 1:26pm -- the laptop suspends. Even if I'm in the middle of typing something. I've checked the BIOS and nothing there would indicate a timer for an automatic suspend message being sent to the OS. This is a 2.5 year old machine, and it's only run Fedoras (7,8,9,10, and now 11). This problem has only cropped up on Fedora 11.Any idea where to start debugging it? I looked at /var/log/pm-suspend.log, but it just seems to indicate that it properly went to suspend and had no problems waking up 8 seconds later.

I have upgraded my laptop to 10.04 while having my usb-keyboard plugged in.f I boot the laptop without a plugged in keyboard, the laptop keyboard is not working. It starts working as soon as I plug a usb-keyboard in though.Quite annoying if I take my laptop with me and the first thing after booting is to find a usb-keyboard to plug in Does anyone know where can I reconfigure this? [edit]I just found out, that the laptop keyboar seems to be in numlock mode... meaning that the keys [j,k,l] is mapped to [1,2,3] etc

I recently started using a Lenovo Thinkpad SL410 and started noticing how everything slows down whenever I plug the power in. It looks like the CPU is getting maxed by normal usage, just a web browser running. As soon as I unplug it, everything goes back to normal. It's almost as if things were backwards. Shouldn't it cap the CPU when it's running on battery? I wouldn't really want that behavior either, but that would be more understandable.

I currently have a dell studio xps 16.. I'm new to Linux and can not seem to figure out how to force my laptop to play from its on board speakers. The laptop seems to believe there is headphone attached to the port constantly.. I figured this out when I use to run windows.. and my skype calls always activated the speakers.. so i know theres nothing wrong with the speakers (well i hope not). Is there any possible way to ignore the sound ports and force play from the speakers?

I've got a Dell Inspiron 1545 with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4300 series card. I need proper OpenGL support, so it appears I need the fglrx driver. After I install it, I experience very odd freezes related to the power cable:
- It freezes if I rapidly take the plug in and out a few times
- It freezes if I run on battery power for a random amount of time between 10 and 20 minutes. This happens if I boot up on battery power, or if I take out the plug while it's on (assuming the first kind of freeze doesn't happen)
EDIT: I have changed absolutely nothing about the drivers, but now those specific freezes don't happen. Instead, I just got a random freeze, while the power cable was in and not being touched.

I have a laptop cooler that sits under my laptop and has 4 USB ports on the back. It plugs into my laptop via USB and that is the only source of power it has. The issue is when I try to boot Ubuntu with it plugged in it hangs forever and if I unplug it then it seems to boot up just fine. This happens even if nothing is plugged into the ports on the cooler. I also notice that if I plug the cooler in after Ubuntu is fully booted it will work but does not see things plugged into it every time.

A couple of days ago, my laptop battery starting discharging at random times. I could rectify this by either pushing the A/C cable in or rotating it slightly. Now the battery discharges unless the A/C cable is pushed in constantly. A few months ago I had a similar problem, though it was accompanied by the computer randomly shutting off. The battery had to be removed and reinserted before I could successfully power the machine back on. Purchasing a new A/C cable fixed this problem quite well. I suspect it may be the battery this time. The gnome battery monitor in LMDE is going completely nuts, announcing I have five minutes of power left and then happily informing me that I have 10 hours 42 minutes only a few moments later.

Acer 5250-BZ475 laptop, fresh install of Ubuntu 11.04. Boots up beautifully as long as an ethernet cable is plugged in. Otherwise, I get to the login screen and have just enough time to start typing in my password before the entire system hangs hard - no mouse, no keyboard, can't even get to a terminal, nothing. Have to hard power off the machine.
It seems to be a problem with the wireless card trying to initialize, but there doesn't seem to be a bios option to disable wireless on this laptop, so I'm a bit at a loss as to how to fix this problem. By the way, wireless works fine if I boot up with a cable connected - I can see all the wireless access points in my area no problem. I just can't boot without a wired connection, which makes my laptop more or less useless when I'm away from home with it.

I just installed fedora 12 on my new lenovo laptop sl510 where I have pulseaudio over my alsa. The problem is, when I plugin headphones in 3.5 jack the speakers dont mute which is really irritating. I tried switching from "analog output" to "analog headphones", but what that does it mutes both.

Works fine when I have the laptop plugged into the mains and will happily switch from 3.5mm to speakers and back again.
But for some reason, when the laptop is on battery I don't get any sound and all, from the 3.5mm or the speakers.

Well, the title pretty much sums it up. Whenever i plug in my external speakers, my laptop speakers continue to put out sound, which is good until i turn up the volume and hear rattling.
I am running ubuntu 9.04 64-bit 2.6.28-13 on an MSi GX620.

Everytime I connect some external headspeakers (headset?) on my laptop the built in speakers are not muted.
My laptop is a dual boot and this problem does not exist on Windows 7, which probably means that this is not some strange hardware problem.
One more think that might help you find a solution for me is that there speakers are plugged into a black "hole" as there is not green one available.
Actually there are 3 colored "holes" for the jacks to be plugged in.A blue one (do not have a clue what might be plugged in there). A pink one which is for microphone and a black one which works fine in Windows 7 when i plug in my headset.
P.S I also dump some hardware info that might prove useful to you.

I've been using Ubuntu for a few weeks now, and I really enjoy using it. Whenever I click Suspend, it suspends just fine, but when I try to resume the session again, it jumps back to life for a few seconds and then it sounds like it just cuts the power. Nothing is ever displayed on the screen.

I installed Ubuntu via USB drive onto my hard drive. If I boot the PC without the usb drive I used, Ubuntu will not load. After booting I can unplug without any consequences.
I looked on the hard drive and there is a boot folder. On the USB drive, this is the tree contents:
/media/disk$ tree
.
|-- adtext.cfg
|-- boot.cat
|-- f10.txt
|-- f1.txt
[Code].....
Am I correct in my assumption that the boot aspect is associated to the USB drive? If so, how do I get it to boot without the USB? I'm guessing copying into some location and modifying grub?

I've got a desktop 10.04 LTS installation working nicely, and leave it logged in processing things for me. I log in remotely and don't always leave the screen plugged into the computer. Trouble is when I reboot it without the screen plugged in it will sometimes boot to a command prompt. If I turn it off, plug in the screen and turn it on again I get into the GUI as normal. I can't see any settings to change this behavior - what am I missing?

I have used a few versions of ubuntu now and each one seems to encounter the same problem loading ubuntu.
I am using a Samsung x05 laptop.
If I have a mouse, printer or even wired internet connection plugged in at any point during startup I will not be able to get past the login screen. I can login fine but the system freezes at the beige screen before the desktop appears.
I recently partitioned and installed Windows xp, which doesn't have the same problem, so I presume it is some kind of incompatibility between Ubuntu and my laptop?

I have a problem with an Acer Aspire One Netbook running 10.04 (although this problem occurred in Karmic as well). The problem is that if the laptop is unplugged from the AC adaptor, the power indicator doesn't pick up the change, although the screen dims (I think the BIOS dims the screen). This usually wouldn't be a problem, but when the laptop runs out of battery, the machine goes completely dead, rather than hibernating at critical like it should.
I've followed the instructions on the wiki page but it still doesn't work. Obviously I'm quite worried about data loss here, especially since it's a physical hard disk!

The computer is used as a server and I connect remotely on it with VNC. It has no monitor. It was working fine until I upgraded to Lucid. Now, it only works with a basic vesa driver (800x600 max res). The log says:
NVIDIA(0): No display devices found for this X screen.
Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
If I plug a monitor, it work fines. Is there a way to disable monitor detection?

I been meaning to install some linux distro on my external hdd to enjoy the renowned desktop experience, so far I installed sabayon first but it wasn't working very sharply and a friend of mine recommended me to just install ubuntu. Anyhow, since the first time I installed sabayon I could not boot vista when the external HDD is not plugged in. I get a grub rescue command prompt. I don't have a vista cd because my laptop came with the whole recovery function installed on a vista partition. I can boot that from the grub menu, from there I did a boot system restore, but I still get the same error. I'd like to be able to boot vista without having the external HDD on of course.
