Ubuntu :: Kernel Upgrade Screws Graphics

Jul 8, 2010

Thats it in a nutshell. and I don't mean the boot splash graphics, I mean desktop graphics! As in upon boot ubuntu goes in "low-graphics" mode. I have had this issue all the time with Lucid and never really found a good fix. With Karmic this was never an issue. As a final fix I tried to reinstall lucid and updated the live CD doing that too. First it worked fine, but after kernel update I downloaded yesterday (with update manager) I have had this "low graphics" issue again.

With Graphics card, I have nVidia GeForce 220 GT. The drivers are up to date, active, and in use. (according to the "hardware drivers" tool.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Yesrterday's Kernel Upgrade Screws Up Graphics?

Mar 23, 2010

I'm used to kernel updates screwing up both my graphics drivers and my instaltion of parallels. These things break each and every time the kernel is updated. Normally, reinstalling makes the problem go away and I move on. Yesterday, Parallels got screwed and I fixed it by reinstalling but the graphic driver is yet to work.

For reference I am using OpenSUSE 11.2 64-Bit Gnome-Edition with an ATI Radeon 4650, since it probably makes a difference. For some reason the driver from the repo (ATI's repo) would not install and I got errors saying that it has a wrong signature and (ignoring that) I got another error saying it was corrupted. So I could not install as usual.

Instead I went at ATI's site and downloaded the latest driver. It installed but I lost the mouse cursor so I reinstalled the previous version which also installed but it not working properly, although I do have a mouse cursor.

glxinfo gives the following error:
X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 136 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 19 (X_GLXQueryServerString)
Serial number of failed request: 24
Current serial number in output stream: 24

fglrxinfo outputs the exact same thing. OpenGL is not working in any way. Even the gears demo and desktop effects (which I tried to reactivate just to test, since I hate those things) simply do not work.

Ubuntu :: Updates Screws Up Grub?

Jun 5, 2010

Both my netbook and this machine needs an update (according to the update manager) Well 2 days ago, I let it update the netbook. Bad mistake. Long story short; it installed a new kernel, and monkeyed with GRUB (v1.5) and it wouldn't boot. It's that new grub thing, with the long cryptic numbers/letters string, instead of the more normal hd0, hd1 thing. I had no clue on how to restore it.

How can I back up GRUB next time, let it update, then restore grub back the way it's suppose to work? I tried backing up the menu.lst file, but that didn't work. I backed up, and restored it, and the netbook still wouldn't boot. Got the very same error message. I had to do a partimage to bring back the old image of it. Also Grub-install will not work at all, from systemrescueCD.

Is there some sort of up-to-date tutorial on Grub? I've had more problems with Grub than anything dealing with linux. Especially since anything happens to it, your virtually screwed.

Ubuntu :: Vnc Client Screws Up Keyboard?

Since network file systems seem either broken or slow, I'm trying to get VNC working.Basically it does work. But the clients I've found so far are very clunky about moving around the screen of the server system, there doesn't seem to be a clean way of exiting the client, and now the keyboard on the system which I ran the client on is completely screwed up.I need something sane here.First, how do I get my keyboard working correctly again?Second, is there a VNC client that's actually any good?

Ubuntu :: 10.04 - Update Consistently Screws Up Programs

May 16, 2010

Every time 10.04 updates I find that two of my programs - boinc and CUPS - get de-configured and must be either reconfigured, or re-installed to make them work. While the fix itself is easy, it is an inconvenience to have to do this after every weekly update. Why this is happening, what I can do to prevent it from occurring in the future (aside from not updating).

Ubuntu Installation :: No Graphics With Kernel 2.6.35-25?

Feb 18, 2011

When 10.10 was released, like so many others, I patiently waited until NVIDIA released a compatible 96 driver. It worked great for a while until I updated to kernel 2.6.35-24. I learned that kernel was messed up in many ways, so I continued to boot in 2.6.35-23 until 2.6.35-25 was released. It promises to be more stable, but I still get no graphics when I boot with 2.6.35-25 - just a text interface.

Are there known incompatibility issues with NVIDIA 96 cards and kernel 2.6.35-25 not addressed by the November 2010 driver release? Or do I just need to re-configure my system in some way?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Cheese Screws Up Longer Video Recordings?

Aug 11, 2011

Can't seem to figure out how to make usable recordings with my webcam in cheese. when making very short video's like a few seconds...the longest so far was 11 seconds, it will behave just fine and it outputs a playable file with thumbnail and all. But when I try anything longer something seems to go wrong. I can tell first because cheese refuses to display a thumbnail for the resulting video. But also I cannot play it n any player I have (Yes I have pretty much all the codecs) Also when saved as a seperate file Gnome will choke when I try to get it to display properties for it.

I haven't found any errors like this when googling for cheese. Oh my OS is 10.04 and I have the 2.30-something Cheese that's packed for this version (can't get any of the newer cheeses to compile on it so far)

Ubuntu :: Graphics Gone After Upgrade To 11.04?

May 1, 2011

Right now I'm working in failsafe graphics mode, with the menu not working. I upgraded to 11.04, all was OK until reboot. Then It said that something about my hardware not supporting Unity. Then It loaded my normal screen. I never had problems with my card, compiz and 3d worked, so I figured it was the driver. It's a NVIDIA. I installed "173", that's all I remember, and an experimental driver. One of them was required to run unity, don't remember which.

After reboot, I got a screen with no menu whatsoever. So no way to do anything. Now I'm in failsafe mode.I could return back to my normal driver, if I could launch the program that does it. But the menu is not working, just "applications", nothing else. How can I go back to my normal display? What is the command line line to launch the driver manager? Also, since the upgrade, it boots like 3 times slower than usual. I'm less enthusiastic about ubuntu now. How do I return to gnome (BTW at login the bottom bar is WHITE, with no option to run GNOME whatsoever. So I have no choice than to use unity, which does not work at all).

This seemed to work fine in 10.10 and indeed from version 9.04

After the upgrade to 11.04 I can only run in basic graphics mode -

I have been to the grub menu and taken the recovery option and attempted to reset the graphics mode - it says it cant detect the graphics card or input devices

I have also been to a root shell via grub and tried the command 'X -configure'

this seems to end abnormally but does produce a xorg.conf file - this file makes the graphics unstable with menu bars and such have overflows and lockups -

OpenSUSE :: Exiting Adobe Flash's Fullscreen Screws Up Display?

If I'm watching a flash video in fullscreen (via firefox) and hit "esc" to leave full screen, about 20-40% of the time it will screw up the monitor's display of everything. The entire screen gets weird white and colored pixels randomply all over the screen (see the attached picture). Restarting is the only thing that fixes this. I tried logging out and back in but the issue remains. I have two questions:

1. How do I fix this without a restart?
2. What could be causing this?

Ubuntu :: Get The Graphics Working Correctly - Driver Compatibility And The Kernel

Aug 24, 2010

I am trying to get the graphics working correctly on an old HP Compac d220 mt machine that has an Intel 82845G Graphics Controller.

[Code]...

The latest driver I can find is: Intel(R) Graphics Driver - Linux*[IntelGraphics_060704.tar.gz] dated 12/17/2004 Version 20041217 When I started to install this driver I got a message that said that it was compatible with kernel version 2.4.(+ numbers I don't remember) So I stopped the installation. My question is what will / could happen if I go ahead and try to complete the driver install? Will I hose the entire system? I am fiddling with the kernel if I continue to install the driver.

IF it does break, would it be possible to undo the driver install using the text based root console with networking via the recovery option or will that too be inoperable if I hose the system. Should it break and I can get to the recovery option and open a terminal. How would i uninstall it? I am just getting reacquainted with Linux again after 20 years. I am not using the advanced package management tool to install the driver. The driver has it's own installation script. (have not looked to see if it has an uninstall script in the file list) I won't be able apt-get remove or dpkg purge anything.

Fedora :: Yum Update To 162 - Kernel - Graphics Are Hosed

Dec 9, 2009

I've been away from computers/Linux for a while so I'm not up on the unix wrangling anymore. So what happened is I started yum extender and it wanted to update. Fine. I let it. I then notice a new kernel is going in so I decide to reboot. I notice different graphics behavior, then I go into my KDE and the graphics are hosed -- as they were when I tried Kubuntu 9.10, which made me come back to my old favorite Fedora. I freak, calm down, reboot (I don't get the old grub? screen offering me kernel boot choices, it just goes into its "ribbon run" at the bottom of the screen) and go into Gnome. Okay, Gnome works -- but no network, i.e., no eth0, i.e., no Internet to come whining to y'all. I then grab the live install disk, get Internet back -- but I don't know how to access the drive or make any changes!

I cry, dry my eyes, try rebooting and banging like a monkey on the keyboard during startup to see if I can get some sort of rescue mode or grub kernel choice list. Yes! After fifth reboot a random pawing of the F keys produces a grub list, I choose 2.6.31.6-145.fc12.i686 and get back to my previous functionality: KDE and Internet work. Culprit is no doubt 2.6.31.6-162.fc12.i686. I would therefore like to know how to boot to the grub manager and get a choice list of kernels to boot

Ubuntu Installation :: Graphics And GUI No Longer Supported After Upgrade?

Mar 1, 2010

The last time I updated Linux it was from Gibbon to Heron. (so 7.10 to 8.04 ) I'm now trying to get caught back up. Thing is, now that I updated from 8.04 to 8.10 I can no longer get to a GUI. Also, most of the text in the terminal is a diamond character as if the font that's installed doesn't want to work most of the time. This is somewhat confusing, but I believe my system's language was set as Japanese before the upgrade and now it's trying to display Kana and/or Kanji and the terminal doesn't like that. Not really important, but I'm not sure how to proceed to the next upgrade or get to a GUI. Fortunately, my system's set up to dual-boot with windows. Can someone help tell me how to get my GUI back or what package to install?

I'm running on a laptop with an ATI mobility Radeon 9700. I've had problems with it and drivers in previous versions back to 6.10 too, but never to the point that the GUI wouldn't work. It's actually an issue with my X Server. I tried "startx" and it says "No Screens found". I looked in my xorg.conf file and there are two screens listed at the bottom. It produced a log too, but I can't get my Flash drive to mount so I can't say exactly what it says. It did mention that there were a lot of font directories that didn't exist along with a few other warnings.

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Upgrade - Choppy Desktop Graphics With ATI?

Apr 29, 2011

Just upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04.Under 10.10, moving windows, scrolling, and compiz's expo were smooth as silk with my Radeon HD 5450 using the fglrx driver. After the upgrade, these things are very choppy, to the point that it feels like I'm running without hardware acceleration. The weird thing is, the system tells me I have acceleration --- Compiz is still running and I'm able to use expo and other effects, glxinfo reports direct rendering, and the Additional Drivers control panel tells me I'm still using fglrx (I even tried re-installing it, to no avail). OpenGL screensavers work fine, and glxgears gives me 1550 fps. Could it be that compiz is somehow not using hardware acceleration, even though my driver offers it? This happens in both Unity and Classic desktop.

Ubuntu :: NVIDIA Kernel Fails To Load, Forced Into Low-graphics Mode?

May 15, 2010

I can run Ubuntu 10.04 just fine as long as I have my hardware drivers disabled, but when I enable my hardware drivers I get an error before the GDM login screen that says something to the effect of it being unable to load the NVIDIA KernelI'm then given the choice of booting into low-graphics mode, configuring xorg for this hardware, troubleshooting, dropping to console, or restarting X.Booting to low-graphics mode does nothing useful, just boots to low gfx mode.Configuring xorg for this hardware does nothing at all - same errors after trying every single option in the configuring xorg sectionTroubleshooting is equally useless to me - I can't copy and paste the very-long error reports, I'm not an xorg pro so editing the xorg conf doesn't help me, and when I tried following the option to export all my config and error logs, it said that it has exported it to $xorg_backup_file - but that's just a variable not a file.. after a reboot I can't find this anywhere.

I've googled this and the only useful info I've found is to run nvidia-xconfig as root, which I've done and it has zero effect. The only temporary solution is to disable the nvidia driver, which lets me boot normally using metacity at full resolution, but has no accelerated 3d or composite overlay so I'm unable to run compiz or have any nifty 3d.Details: Vid card: NVIDIA G96 (according to lspci) Driver: NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current) [Recommended] OS: Ubuntu 10.04

Debian Configuration :: Kernel Modesetting Breaks Graphics?

Aug 1, 2010

Enabling kernel modesetting on my computer breaks graphics, but Xorg.log and syslog don't tell me much, because they don't log any error.

The symptoms are the following: boot goes on normally, then the KDM login screen is corrupted. On the login screen there is a big square instead of the cursor, and that square does move as I move the mouse. If I press Ctrl+Alt+F1 I'll get a black screen instead of the terminal, and from there I cannot go back to virtual terminal 7 for login. The only thing I can do is to issue sys-requests for read-only remount and reboot.

Where could I start looking for the problem? What does it seem to be related to, Xorg, kernel, radeon driver?

Fedora :: Graphics Chipset Stopped Working - Causes Kernel Crash ?

Jul 13, 2009

My graphics card (00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03))

used to work fine, but yesterday I opened glest and it crashed my computer within 5 seconds. No picture was ever displayed. I downloaded another 3D game called Nogravity (Glest being my only one, I wanted something else to test) and it crashed after a few minutes of play and I had to restart. After all the crashes kerneloops came up with a report.

Here is the most recent one:

Code:

I did recently notice that I have no direct 3D rendering, it comes up with something like: No (LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT SET)

I do not know whether I used to have it, but I do know that 3D apps used to run perfectly well. (In fact the stability of 3D apps was what converted me from Ubuntu where they crashed every 5 minutes)

I ran glxgears for 5 seconds and it gave me 420 FPS.
