Each file contains only one word per line, and they contain exactly the same number of lines. I would like to create a new file called fileAB, where the i-th line contains the i-th line of fileA, a Tab separator character, and then the i-th line of fileB. I know how to do it in Python or other scripting languages, but it would be nice to have a bash one-liner for that. Is it possible to do this in bash or any other Unix shell, using the tools that are usually available on the command line (e.g., sed, awk and such)?

Oct 30, 2010I am trying to join about 3 video file and have an audio track over the top. Nothing major and to give you an idea how basic it needs to be, I used windows movie maker in the past. I can't figure out how to do it! I had a flick through the web and some people recommended Avidmux. I installed it and i can edit one video file with no audio but if i try to incorporate a second file it just opens a new window! Has anyone got any ideas on good video editing software.

Oct 2, 2010Near the end of the install, a panel lists dozens of patches, some categorized as "Security", others as "Recommended", each preceded by a checkbox. I started to check all of the patches, but then noticed that the checks were bringing in software I had not requested -- e.g., checking an emacs patch brought in emacs. Rather than bring in all of this additional software, I left all patches unchecked. Now I need to know how I can go back and apply only the patches that pertain to software that I have actually installed.
I'd also like to know whether there is some way to limit the install program panel to relevant patches only.

Jul 30, 2010Just got a Lexmark Pro200 wireless printer. Can anybody tell me where and how to download the relevant drivers to print using WiFi?. Went to Lexmark.com and downloaded what i thought was the correct driver and the system installed them but cannot find them. When i plug in a usb cable a message tells me that i have connected the correct printer, However when asked to search Lexmark does not even show up on the list to select and search. Was successful on my wife's Windows laptop and after trial and error on my Mac Mini.

However, the size and diversity of content within these disorganized folders precludes me doing things manually. Sep 16, 2010I recovered some 60,000 files with PhotoRec and need a script to sort them into individual folders based on extension. I was able to do this once before but cannot find the script again (sad thing is that I probably saved it on another HD that I'm having partition issues with, but that's another story....).I found this script:

While it does work, I am not looking forward to going through all 132 folders and typing in each extension. The last time I did it, the folder was automatically created based on the extension(s) found.

Apr 1, 2011I have a folder named Pictures that contains a bunch of .jpg files. My problem is that they all have randomly numbered names, then there is a duplicate of the file that is random numbers then the letter a right before the .jpg.for example, there would be 123.jpg and 123a.jpg, where 123a.jpg is just a resized version of 123. What i'd like to do but have NO clue how to, is to have a script or something go through my Pictures folder, then copy the ones that end in a.jpg to a folder called Resized, and ones that dont have that to a folder called Originals. That way my Pictures folder will be in tact, and i'll have copies of them all separated out.I have to do this all through the CLI on a machine, maybe I dont even need a script and can just do it with a slick command?

Jul 21, 2011I'm dipping my toes into some bash scripting and was wondering if there was a way to delete a file not based on how old it is, but rather how many other files are currently in the folder... or something to that effect....
What I'm doing is creating a script to back up a folder nightly. I'd like to keep a maximum of 3 backups. However in case the script for some reason fails to run one night (computer turned off possibly) I don't want to set the condition for deletion to be the date.
I know that if I run:

find /path/to/files* -mtime +3 -exec rm {} ;
that it will delete everything older than three days. -atime and -ctime don't seem to be what I"m looking for... is there another command I can use to achieve what I"m trying to?

Aug 4, 2011I have hundreds of MTS and AVI files since 2000 and would like to rename them in the following manner based on the date created: DD-MMM-YYYY HH.MM.SS_X; where X begins at 1 and increments by 1 if there are dublicate date/time stamped videos.
Ex: 19-Nov-2002 08.12.30.avi, 19-Nov-2002 08:13:30_1 and 19-Nov-2002 08:13:30_2
Someone previously wrote the following script for me, and it works great for photos. It uses EXIV2 to get the image date created info. I have tried to understand the script, but am struggling. The video files I have can use the date modified since I have not modified them since I filmed them.

Aug 11, 2011I know find can do what I am looking for, but I am wondering if there is an alternative way to find files on the filesystem either created before/after a certain point, or at a certain time.
Typically I rely on updatedb & locate for most of my file searching needs. Issues with those tools, though, are that it only has directory and file names, and it only creates a database of local directories, not anything mounted via CIFS|NFS or via -o loop (eg, .iso images).
So if I need to find files created after yesterday across the entire system (local and remote filesystems), I am currently needing to use find.
What other tools, if any, would accomplish this in a similar fashion?
I have tried ls and grep, but that requires (in my attempts so far) multiple searches:
ls -lR | grep Aug | grep 10
ls -lR | grep Aug | grep 11

The latex compiler includes these files just as if they had been copied and pasted into the main latex file at the point specified. My problem is that I have a document which depends on quite a bit of these input commands,ut I am trying to use a latex preprocessor (ratexdb, adds database fields to your latex documentshich does not support input commands, leaving my file only half processed.So I was wondering: is there any easy way to parse through my main file, detect only the input commands, interpret the syntax and include the files specified (where specified)nd produce a second, populated file, which can then be processed by ratexdb?

I got hundreds of thousands of files that has GUID name assigned to it. only way to find out the file name is to look up the database table. Its obvious that this is not efficient. I couldn't find any tutorials on how to do this. Please point me to right direction. A starting point would be very helpful.
