Ubuntu :: Sorting Files Based On Filename?

Nov 2, 2010

I'm currently trying to organize a media server so that things will be in some kind of logical order rather than the current setup of dumping everything of a certain content type into a single folder. However, the size and diversity of content within these disorganized folders precludes me doing things manually. Does anyone know of a program or script that could sort the files into folders based on part of a filename

General :: List Files Based On Matching Only Part Of Their Filename?

Sep 13, 2011

I have many files in a folder for example

Kiran.txt
Kiran1.txt
Kiran221.txt
Kiran144.txt
Time.csv

[Code]...

From this directory, I want to know how I could use grep to display files based on part of their filename - for example those starting with "Account" or those ending in ".sh".

Programming :: Moving Files To Directories Based On Part Of Filename?

Jul 6, 2010

I have a single directory of pairs of files, with the pairs sharing a string as the beginning of the filename:

SF1-27F1492R-clone01_T3_A18_001.ab1
SF1-27F1492R-clone01_T7_A20_002.ab1
SF1-27F1492R-clone02_T3_A19_003.ab1
SF1-27F1492R-clone02_T7_A21_004.ab1
...etc

I need to create a subdirectory for each pair then move the pair into the subdirectory.

I accomplished the first step using:

$find /foo -name '*T3*' -exec mkdir '{}.wrk' ;

I can use a regex to designate the pair and associate the directory, but how do I use regex in a path as the output of a move command?

Programming :: Scheduled Copy Based On Filename?

Jun 17, 2010

Since I'm not building a specific piece of software but a shell script, I hope this is in the right forum. At work, we use RHEL for the basic system but have Windows clients attached as well. On the Win side, there's a program that I'm trying to duplicate on the Linux side. Because of established procedures, I can't change the way files are named so please don't suggest I do that (my boss would not be happy). We have files stored on an NFS share we manipulate on either side.

The program is used to copy files from one directory to another, based on the filenames. The first two characters of the filename are ignored (they're for human-readable sorting purposes only), the next four characters are the time, and then all characters after that are ignored. The time is read and the file gets copied at that time. (This was all done in VC++ many years ago, and nobody knows where the source code is.) For example, a file named 2d0730abcd.txt would be copied from the source directory to the destination directory at 7:30am.

It seems to me that it should be fairly straightforward to build a shell script on the Linux side to do the same thing, but darned if I can figure out which magical combination of commands to use. Would the shell script end up creating a giant pile of AT commands?

General :: Split A Directory Based On The Filename Prefix?

Mar 5, 2010

I have a very large directory with probably millions of small files in it. It's taking forever to run ls on the directory.

Is there an easy script that I can run to split the directory into smaller ones, based on the prefixes of the filenames. My goal is to wind up with something similar to what the Debian archives' pool directory looks like.

General :: Processing Log File Within Certain Dates Based On Filename

Apr 8, 2010

I am working on the script parsing specific message "TEST" from multiple file. The log file name looks like:

N3.2009-11-26-03-05-02.console.log.tar.gz
N4.2009-11-29-00-25-03.console.log.tar.gz
N6.2009-12-01-10-05-02.console.log.tar.gz

I am using the following command:
zgrep -a --text "TEST" * | awk -F"[ .,]" '{sub(".*:","",$6); sub(",.*","",$7); print $1,$6,$7,$10}
and getting
N3 2009-11-25 20:12:57 TEST
N4 2009-11-28 10:42:18 TEST
N6 2009-12-01 10:00:24 TEST

If I only want to search the log file after 2009-11-29, what shall I change the command?

Ubuntu :: Logical Volume Sorting Individual Files?

Jun 5, 2011

So I just had a quick question on logical volumes and such with ubuntu. I've been looking into setting up a storage array of 4 2tb hard drives for media storage in my house but have ran into a wall with with sort of array i should use, whether it be setting up a full raid system (raid 5 or 10 most likely) or using LVM for stripping. The one thing with LVM however, is that there is no parity or redundancy built into it in case 1 hard drive fails. I was wondering if it was possible to create something similar to that of LVM stripping, but instead the logical volume is sorted into whole individual files, not stripping them across the array. That way, if one drive fails, sure, i lose the contents of the one drive, but the rest of the content isn't lost and I have no loss of space because there is no inherent parity.

Fedora :: Automatically Renaming Files While Sorting By Date?

Apr 17, 2010

I often record music from the webradio with Streamtuner. How can I rename the mp3 files recorded in a way that numbers are added to the beginning of the filename representing the order in which the titles were played on the webradio station?I am looking for an automated solution like a renaming tool since there are usually hundreds of files in a directory. I used autorename / ARen for windows back in the day when I was still on XP. What I could do with the tool was:a) Sort the files by date of creationb) add an increasing number at the beginning of the filename based on the position in the sorted list.

Ubuntu :: Indexed Search For Files By Filename?

Jun 23, 2011

Is there really no way of having with a GUI an indexed file search by filename (not contents etc) which gives a detailed list? Great big icons as a "result" is no good to me, I want "details" that I can then click on to either open or copy etc. I tried the totally useless "Tracker" and Zeitgeist in my 11.04 is no better. There is a fantastic product in the win environment called everything.exe which does exactly what I want. I cannot be alone in this type of requirement. It has to have a GUI.

General :: Merging And Sorting Multiple Files With "sort"?

Jun 3, 2010

I have a bunch of text logfiles in the following format:

ID (17 characters)
Timestamp (14 characters YYYYmmddHHMMSS e.g. "20060210100040" -> 2006/02/10 10:00:40)
Random data (? characters)
end of line

The files are already sorted by timestamp.I need to get 1 log file with all the logs from multiple logs files, sorted by timestamp. Note that the log files are really huge, around 3-4G each (and there are dozens of them) I tried the following command:

sort -s -m -t '|' -k1n,1n +17 -o data_sort.txt *.TXT

Here is how I ended up with this command:

-s : don't bother with tie results
-m : merge all logs files
-t '|' : there is no | in my logs, so the whole line should be field 1

[code]....

Actually... it fails miserably. The output file data_sort.txt is just the concatenation of all files, not sorted at all.

Ubuntu :: Backing Up Files With "invalid Encoding" In The Filename?

May 10, 2010

I wish to install ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop PC, but before I do that I need to back up my HDD. Due to alot of filenames show as having a wrong encoding, ubuntu will not let me copy the files. We are talking hundres of files in many sub folders.

The way I see it, I either have to:

1. have ubuntu back up my files in annother way (and not simply dragging and dropping as I have tried)

2.use some sort of tool to convert/fix the filenames so I wil then be able to back them up.

I've tried the following using convmv as mentioned here, but with no succes.

Code:
convmv -r --notest -f windows-1255 -t UTF-8 *

I'm using a live cd, thus the files are not located in my home folder, but on a separate parrtition.
